MERCADO, CARMEN ROJO Passed away on October 17, 2001 at the young-at-heart age of 62. She was born December 19, 1938 in Stanton, CA to Guadalupe and Sebastian Rojo. Devoted sister to Rose Velarde (Armando), Luciano Rojo (Ruth), Tony Rojo (Jeanette), Marina Guzman, Mary Carrasco (Ruben), Roger Rojo (Sharon). Preceded in death by her sister, Dolores Arredondo and brother Joe Rojo. Loving aunt to many nieces and nephews and "La Tia" to her special mijas Rosie, Gia, and Dina. Carmen and her family moved to the Sacramento River Delta town of Courtland in 1946. She graduated from Courtland High in 1957 where she was active in student government but remembered most for her school spirit as head cheerleader: "C O U R T L A N D !" Carmen was an avid SF 49ers, SF Giants, and Sacramento Kings fan. Carmen's devotion carried over to her public service with the State of California for nearly 40 years. Although Carmen didn't start her career at the Health & Welfare Agency, that is where she left her legacy. Carmen worked at the Agency for 23 years, ending with her retirement in 2000. So missed, the Agency asked Carmen to return as a retired annuitant, which she did last month. Carmen's commitment to her community led her to serve as: a founding member of the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project, board member of Festival De La Familia, member and inductee of the Mexican American Sports Association, and a Mexican American Bowling League board member. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996, Carmen became an advocate, spokesperson, and board member for the American Cancer Society. Her courage and determination to beat breast cancer, without ever losing her zest for life, made Carmen a role model for many. Her last wish was for family and friends to continue supporting the fight for breast cancer by participating in Sunday's annual march, "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer". PIAZZA, SALVATORE A. On October 18, 2001, after 90 full years of life, and surrounded by his six children, a grandson, and a granddaughter, Sal peacefully ended his earthly presence. Late in life, Sal studied Buddha's teachings, and was a man of few words. But those he spoke were from "enlightenment". POPPLETON, WILMA Of Sacramento, died Friday October 12th at UC Davis Medical Center. She was 62. She was born January 19th, 1939 in Pampa, Texas to William and Phoebe Evans. Her passions included her grandchildren, cooking, and QVC. PRICE, EVA Born in Ashley, North Dakota, a longtime resident of Sacramento, CA peacefully passed away October 18, 2001 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Richard Price. Loving mother of Sharlene Wheeler of Oakley, CA, Marilyn Lee of Boring, OR, and Roberta White of Sacramento, CA. Adored grandmother of Mike, Mark, Cindy, Laura, Karyn, Shawn, Brandon and 12 great-grandchildren. Beloved sister of Fred Adam, Ernie Adam, Roy Adam, Alvin Adam and Edna Jonas. Eva had an avid interest in teaching Wilton and Lambeth Methods of cake decorating and oil painting. She loved to travel, but most of all she loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. RAMOS, JOSEPH E. In Sacramento, October 18, 2001. Sadly missed after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born December 29, 1921 in Vacaville, CA, and resided in Sacramento, CA. Beloved husband of Goldie Ramos for 54 years. Loving father of Grace Maiola (Bill) of Georgia, Joseph Ramos (Lisa) of Sacramento. Survived also by 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Christopher and Grace Ramos; a brother Tony Ramos, and sister Geri Garrett. A Grant Union High graduate, 1941; Veteran WWII Army Air Corp, European Theater, retired from the California State Printing Plant after 27 years. He was active in bowling, dancing, bicycling, and traveling. RODGERS JR, JOHN MENDES Surrounded by his family, he passed from this earth into heaven on October 17, 2001. Born May 21, 1947, he was a lifelong resident of Sacramento. He is survived by his loving parents: Katherine and John M. Rodgers, Sr., his loving partner Alaine Ross, who affectionately referred to him as "Alvin", his four children: Catena Rene Rodgers and her fiancee Van Bowen, Jenifer Amberson and her husband Harold, Michael Rodgers and his wife Kathleen and Lori Lupton and her husband Ken. Grandchildren: Nicholas & Christian Bowen-Rodgers, Brandon Amberson & the late Matthew Rodgers, Dylan & Bailee Lupton. He was the Master of "Barney". He also leaves countless family and friends. John was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam era. He was retired since 1995 from Regional Transit after 26 years. He was an avid hunting, fishing and car enthusiast. An active member of the American Portuguese Society, California Waterfowl Association, Ducks Unlimited, Sacramento Safari Club, etc. He was always one to lend a helping hand; he touched many lives and as a result, will be greatly missed. ROSENQUIST, EUNICE LORRAINE Born in San Jose, February 25, 1918. Passed away in Auburn, September 13, 2001. Survived by her husband of 61 years, Raymond Rosenquist; son, David Rosenquist; daughter, Carin Chapin; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. Resident of Sacramento, Carmichael, and Folsom for 22 years; school secretary in San Juan Unified School District; active golfer, having made a hole-in-one in Elk Grove; avid cook, seamstress, knitter, swimmer, bridge player, and flower arranger. A private graveside gathering took place September 15, 2001, at Los Gatos Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Meadow Vista, at 10AM, Saturday, November 3, 2001. WEIR, LUCILLE MARY Born September 8,1931 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Passed away October 17, 2001 in her Orangevale home. She is survived by Gordon, her husband of 50 years. Also survived by her sister, Therese Sinfield of San Diego, her five children, Muriel Group (Chuck), Doug (Kimberly), Mary Shaw (Jack), Carol Sheilenberger (Dean), and John (Kris) and many grandchildren. WOLLAM, RYKK (RICHARD EUGENE) Born April 10, 1963 passed on October 17, 2001. Survived by friends Myra, Judy, Jordy, Kathy, Clayton and countless others. Survived by his grandparents, Phyllis and Jim Mott-Trautman; father, Harold; mother, Sharon Denny; sister, Laurie Agerton; brothers, Bobby and Jamie; aunts, uncles, three nephews, and one niece. Rykk graduated from Palmdale High School in 1981. He earned his BA degree from CSU Sacramento and possessed a Professional Clear Single Subject Credential in Social Science, as well as a Multiple Subject Credential, Learning Handicapped Credential, Resource Specialist Program Credential, CLAD certification and a Masters Degree in Special Education. He received an Administrative Credential from LaVerne University. "Mr. Rykk" worked for Washington Unified School District for nine years. He taught a Special Day Class, and was a social studies instructor and Resource Specialist at Golden State Middle School and River City High School. He also taught third grade at Bryte Elementary and was the summer school principal at Westmore Oaks during the summer of 1999. Rykk requested that friends get together to celebrate his life. Allan Olvera
Allan Olvera took pride in his heritage
As vice chairman of the Sacramento Native American Caucus, 50-year-old Allan Olvera devoted a sizeable chunk of his free time to helping Indians.
Mr. Olvera, who was murdered last week in his home near Florin High School, played an active role in the local American Indian community, according to his cousin, Alexanderia Segura.
Whether it was working with youngsters in Elk Grove Unified School District's Indian Education Program or distributing salmon to American Indian elders on Thanksgiving eve, Mr. Olvera was there to help, she said.
That was his avocation. To pay the bills, he worked as a clerical assistant in the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance, where he also acted as an adviser on American Indian issues, his cousin said.
Allan Louis Olvera was one of three children of the former Dorothy Blue, a Miwok, and Henry Olvera, a Campbell Soup employee.
Mr. Olvera graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1969 and later attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, his cousin said. He was always proud of his heritage, Segura said, and at one point during the early 1970s, participated in the American Indian takeover of Alcatraz.
He never married, she said.
In addition to helping raise funds and providing encouragement to those working in the Indian Education Program in the Elk Grove schools, Mr. Olvera played a key role in the Native American Caucus' salmon distribution program, according to his nephew, Matt Franklin.
Working with the state Department of Fish and Game, he helped arrange donations of salmon from the Nimbus Fish Hatchery to American Indian people every Thanksgiving, his nephew said.
Mr. Olvera's body was found in his home Thursday night by relatives, said sheriff's Sgt. James Lewis.
As of Monday night, no one had been charged with the murder, Lewis said.
Survivors include his parents, Dorothy and Henry Olvera; brother, Henry "Sonny" Olvera; and a sister, Doreen Franklin, all of Sacramento.
Visitation is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. A rosary is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul Catholic Church, 8720 Florin Road. A funeral Mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the church.
ARMSTRONG, DIANE Passed away peacefully on November 3, 2001 at the Branford Hospice, Connecticut, after a two year fight with cancer. Daughter of James and Lucille Johnston, she is survived by her three children: sons, Richard H. Armstrong of San Diego, CA, Ross H. Armstrong of Danbury, CT; and daughter Nyna Armstrong-Casey of Orinda, CA. She was the enthusiastic grandmother of four. Diane, a native of Sacramento, was born on April 14, 1934, and was active in Rainbow Girls and Ila Neb. She graduated from McClatchy High School and Sacramento City College. Diane enjoyed a varied career life which included real estate at Camelot Realty in Sacramento and construction management at several firms in the Sacramento Area. Diane lived and traveled extensively throughout the Orient and Europe. We will miss her wry sense of humor, her quick wit and her adventurous spirit. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 10th, St. Peter's Church, Main Street, Danbury, CT. A California memorial will be held in Orinda in early December. BOWERSMITH, BARBARA J. Passed away November 3, 2001 surrounded by family. A native Californian. Age 63. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Kenneth. BRENIZER, JANICE LAVERN Peacefully passed away with her family by her side on November 8, 2001 at the age of 67. Devoted wife of Donald Brenizer. Loving mother of Steven Brenizer and Melissa Worden.
