Michael Separovich
Michael Separovich, 94, athlete in '20s and '30s
Michael J. Separovich, a machinist for Southern Pacific railroad who was active in soccer and semipro baseball in Sacramento during the 1920s and 1930s, died Saturday of pneumonia.
He was 94.
Mr. Separovich, who lived independently until suffering a fall two months ago, came to Sacramento from his native Yugoslavia when he was 3.
As a young man, he was "an outfielder on baseball teams and played soccer on weekends," said one of his sons, James Separovich.
"In those days, it wasn't unusual for two or three thousand people to show up for a game," his son said. "That was before television, and there wasn't much to do."
Along with his brothers, Tony and Mark, who also were athletes, Mr. Separovich was a member of the La Salle Club Hall of Fame.
He and Mark played soccer on Dante Club teams that won the state championship in the '20s, according to his family.
The eldest of four children of Mary Damjanovich Separovich and Marin Separovich, he dropped out of Sacramento High School to work and help support the family when his father died.
His first job was as a messenger at the SP shops, his family said. He also attended classes a few hours a day.
Mr. Separovich eventually became a machinist and toolmaker and worked 49 years in the SP shops. He retired in 1973.
Although he never finished high school, "he was really pretty good at math," recalled his son, James. "He tutored me in trigonometry and algebra."
He was a charter member of Sutter Lodge No. 536 of the International Association of Machinists.
Among other things, he also belonged to the Southside Improvement Club and the Italian Catholic Federation.
He married the former Mary Manassero in 1934. She died in 1996.
He is survived by sons, Richard, James and Robert, all of Sacramento; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Harry A. Nauman & Son Funeral Home, 4041 Freeport Blvd., with a funeral Mass following at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Spirit Church, at Land Park Drive and Cordano Way.

CLEMENCE, JAMES ELDEAN Born July 2, 1914, in Delmont, Pennsylvania. Passed away at home November 2001, at age 87. Preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years Elizabeth (Busy) Clemence. His loving sons, James Barry and Robert Wayne, survive Jim. Five grandchildren, Christopher, John, Shannon, Sara, and Todd; three great grandchildren, Jennifer, Patrick, and Brenden; one great great grandchild; his loving niece Linda Clemence Reib and her husband Larry; his companion and dear friend, Lenora Meddles; his sister-in-law Jeannette Hoffman and her husband Darwin. Jim was in the grocery business all his life and a member of Retail Clerks Local 588 Union. He enjoyed many activities and weekends on his houseboat where he entertained family and friends. Jim was an avid golfer and a member of Mission Oaks Senior Center, where he enjoyed playing pinochle. He was a member of the Nifty Fifties Senior Group, attending breakfasts, parties, and other activities and will be missed there by many of his friends. A gathering of family and friends celebrating Jim's life will be held Saturday, November 17, from 12-4, at 2313 Santa Anita Drive, Sacramento. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer's Center, Sacramento, California, or the charity of your choice.
CONCKLIN, GERALD WILLIAMS In Carmichael on November 8, 2001. Much beloved husband of Nancy for 20 years. Jerry is survived by his loving family son Scott, his wife Julie, and their children Travis and Danny from Redding; son Barry from San Jose; brother Wil and his wife Beth from San Jose; brother Steve from Mt. Shasta; and sister Millie and her husband Gary from Sumner, Washington. He is also survived by three nephews, one niece, their families and many long-time friends. Born in San Jose November 24, 1930, he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. After four years in the Air Force, he returned to San Jose and graduated from San Jose State. After working for one year at Tidewater Oil Co., he relocated to Sacramento where he worked 10 years for the Department of Finance and 20 years for the Legislative Analysts Office. He dearly loved his jazz and working on family genealogy. There will be a private service for the family, but all friends are invited to the Concklin home November 25 from 2:00 to 5:00 to celebrate Jerry's life. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

FOWLES JR., J. FRANCIS "Frank" Colonel, USAF RETIRED Passed away peacefully on November 11, 2001 at the age of 82. He was born in Ogden, Utah to J. Francis Fowles and Nettie Watson Fowles on October 9, 1919. He had a distinguished military career spanning 29 years. During World War II, he served his country in the India, Burma and China Theater. After returning from the war, he graduated from the University of Utah Law School and served the remaining years with the JAG, including 8 years at the Pentagon and a four year tour of duty in Panama, Canal Zone. Colonel Fowles was an avid outdoorsman and supported wildlife preservation. Colonel Fowles is survived by his wife Annabelle Fowles of Sacramento, his two devoted daughters, Julie (Franklin) Kepinger of Keswick, Virginia and Mary Francis (Tom) Skipper of Reston, Virginia and his cherished sister Kathryn Barney of Ogden, Utah. He was blessed with four grandsons, John Skipper, Scott Keplinger, Richard Keplinger and Brendan Skipper. Also surviving Colonel Fowles is Mrs. Fowles sister, Toni (Dick) Bobo and many nieces and nephews. Colonel Fowles was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Tom Fowles and his sister Marilyn Olsen. In his retirement years, he was an active board member of the Sequim, Washington Food Bank where he volunteered for ten years. At the request of the family private services will be held.
FUJII, TOKO Passed away in Sacramento on November 8, 2001. Age 81. Mr. Fujii is survived by his loving wife, Sayoko; two beloved sons, Scott Fujii and Roger Fujii and his wife Valerie Quinn. One cherished daughter, Terry Kornelly and husband, Tom. Devoted grandfather to Brian, Rachel, Quinn and Ami, great grandfather to Taylor. One sister, Chizue Ito and husband, Yasushi. GASTON, JULIA Born August 18, 1921 in Levy, South Carolina, peacefully passed away on November 7, 2001 in Sacramento, California. She lived in New York City, New York, for more than 55 years, before moving to California in July of 1997. She is survived by her son, Andrew, daughter-in-law Kim, grandson Anthony, granddaughter Julia, great-granddaughters Symone and Mila, great-grandson Nicholas, Nephews Louis Jr. and Fred, Niece Ginnell and many other relatives and friends. Family and friends are invited for visitation on Monday, November 12, 2001 between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. at East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento, CA 95841. HARVEY, NOREEN ZELLE HARVEY, CARL STUDLEY Noreen passed away November 11, 2001 at age 87. Born in Hitchcock, SD on February 8, 1914. Resident of Rio Linda since 1922. Graduated from Sacramento H.S., Sacramento J.C., and Chico State College with an education degree specializing in music. Taught elementary school for thirty years, mainly in Rio Linda. Beloved wife of the late Carl Studley Harvey, who died August 7, 2001 at age 91. He was born December 21, 1909 in Biggs, CA. He moved to the Sacramento area in 1937. He graduated from Fortuna H.S., Sacramento J.C., and Sacramento State College with an edicaiton degree. He taught electronics at Sacramento J.C. and Sierra College before retiring in 1973. Cherished mother and father of Charlotte of Los Angeles and Russell, who died in infancy; she was sister to the late Aileen Krull of Galt, the late Sherrill Van Voorhis of Calamesa, and Arden Jones of Redding. Long-time member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Eastern Star. Memorial service to be held at 2 p.m. on November 13, 2001 at the Rio Linda Community United Methodist Church where the family have been active for close to eighty years.

MacDONALD, LYNNE (HOCHHALTER) Was born on October 25, 1956. She passed away due to complications following surgery in Sacramento, California on November 10, 2001. She is survived and cherished by her loving husband of 22 years, Scott MacDonald, and her children Adam (18), Amber (16), Alan (14), Alyssa (11). She is also survived by her mother, Darleen (and Elmer) Hoover, Bismarck, North Dakota; father Milton (and Darlene) Hochhalter, Baker, Montana; brother Bryan (and Holly) Hochhalter of Calgary, Alberta; brother Greg (and Corrine ) Hochhalter of Kelowna, British Columbia; along with many in-laws, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends. Lynne was preceded in death by a brother, Ross, in 1965. Lynne was born in Fargo, North Dakota and raised in Bismarck. She pursued post-secondary education at North American Baptist College, Edmonton, Alberta, and completed a Bachelors Degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 1979. Lynne will be remembered most for her unwavering dedication and love for her family, especially her children. She was committed to using her gifts and talents for Christian ministry, specifically in her area of passion, which was music. She was a vocalist and keyboard player in the Contemporary Christian Band "Straight Street", and was a member of First Baptist Church, Elk Grove, California. MADOLORA, CLARENCE "MARIO" Passed away on November 6, 2001 at the age of 48. He was born in Honolulu, HI, but had lived in Sacramento for the last 27 years. He was survived by his wife of 11 years, Nancy. McCORMACK, RUTH MARY (CASEY PHILLIPS) In Sacramento, November 10, 2001. Beloved wife of the late Albert Dana Phillips Jr., MD, and T.B. (Bulen) McCormack; loving mother of Albert Dana Phillips III, Mary Kathryn Healy, and the late Elizabeth Rulison (Hanson) Nyland of Walnut Grove; sister of Kathryn Alice Peterson and sister-in-law of Jack Peterson; predeceased by her brother, John S. MILLER - HILL, PEGGY Life partner of Logan Monroe Hill, and proud and devoted mother to Logan Kenyon and Malaika Elizabeth Hill, of Elk Grove, CA, departed this earth on Friday, November 9, 2001. Peggy loved life and saw each new day as a cause for celebration. Peggy wrote in her journal, "She could not have mail ordered a more loving, and loyal husband than Logan." The mere mention of her children, Malaika and Kenyon lit up her face. She enjoyed an especially close relationship with her two sisters, Erma Charles Dean, and Joyce E. Major of Riverdale, CA. She thought the sun rose and set around her brothers, Rev. Ralph J. Miller of Louisville, TN and Gary Sinquefield Miller, of Knoxville, TN. She also enjoyed a close and loving relationship with brother-in-law, Griffin A. Dean, and sisters-in-law, Patricia Miller and Gloria Miller. Other in-laws included Kirby Lynn and Debbie Hill of Johnson City, TN, Jackie and Deretha Hill of Alcoa, TN and loving father-in-law Eddie Hill. She leaves to mourn aunts Marie Jones and Viola Dowell. Her parents, Rev. Ralph J. Miller and Emma Louise Walker Miller, predeceased her. A host of cousins, nieces and nephews are left to mourn. Special nieces were Kimberly Dean, Lisa Dean, James and Terrance A. Major. In recent years Peggy developed loving relationships with half sisters Freddie Mae Henderson and Mildred Swan. Childhood and life-long friends included the late Sandra Black, Patricia Robertson Houston, Louise Tucker Bryant and Tanya Henderson Martin. Peggy grew up in Alcoa, TN, but spent the majority of her adult life in CT where she had three special close friends, LaRue Swanson, Leslie Wilson and Blanche Taylor. Peggy attended Tennessee State University and graduated from Western CT State University in Danbury, CT. She took her master of Social Work from the Univ. of CT. Peggy loved the profession of social work and in many ways identified herself with the profession. She practiced in a variety of social work settings, including medical, family services and private practice for well over twenty-five years. Peggy was devoted to political action and saw herself as an agent of change. In fact, she became the first African-American to graduate from the previously segregated Alcoa High School in 1964. She was particularly active in the political arena in CT where she was an active member of the Monroe Democratic Town Committee. She ran for the board of education and for state representative. While she was not successful in winning those races she certainly made an impact on the political scenery of the state. In addition, she received an appointment by the former governor of CT, Lowell Weicker, to a seat on the Board of Directors of the Whiting Forensic Institute. Peggy asked a special note of appreciation be extended to all the friends and relatives who stopped by to visit, made a phone call, or penned a note, and especially all of those who made the trek to CA for the Life Party given by her daughter, Malaika, in May of 2000. Peggy will go home to Alcoa, TN, where the funeral will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2001 at Bethel Baptist Church. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2001, 4 PM at World Miracle Faith Outreach in Monroe, CT. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or the Charles M. Hall Alumni/Peggy Miller-Hill Scholarship Fund.
