GASTMAN, KATHRYN MAE (KING) Beloved mother, Kathryn Mae (King) Gastman, passed away at the home of her daughter in Sumner, Washington, on October 25, 2001. Born in Auburn, CA, on March 6, 1919, Kay was a long time resident of Roseville, the descendent of a pioneer family. Kay was a 1936 graduate of Roseville High School and went on to earn her degree from the College of the Pacific in Stockton. The mother of Lindy Pellegrini of Sumner, WA, and Lewis Wentworth of Tustin, CA. Kay was acknowledged as an accomplished artist, working in a wide variety of media. A memorial service in Kay's honor will be held on Saturday, November 17, at 10:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Roseville, 515 Sunrise Avenue.
HARRAH, ROBERT THOMAS Bob was born February 19, 1923 in Caldwell, Idaho and passed away November 9, 2001 in Sacramento, CA. He was a Veteran of WWII serving in the Army in the Philippines and Japan from 1944-1948. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth (Betty); dear stepdaughter Judith (Vern) Steinbach; grandchildren Janet (John) Pancucci, Thomas (Julie) Steinbach, Susan (Sean) Slattery, Patricia (Stephen) Avery; 11 great grandchildren; brother James N. (Elizabeth) Harrah of Cupertino; nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 4PM, Friday, November 16, 2001, at the United Methodist Church of Rancho Cordova, where Bob was a member for 27 years. HELGESON, Orville Edward In Sacramento, November 8 in his home, passed peacefully into the Kingdom of Heaven. Born October 22, 1918 in Powers Lake, North Dakota, Orv was the third youngest of seven children born to a Norwegian Homestead farmer, then banker. He followed in his father's footsteps and became a banker also. He served in the U. S. Army in Italy in WW II. He married Zelda on December 21, 1941. After his military service he joined his wife in California in 1943. He worked for the Bank of America from 1946 to 1980, as Vice President and Branch Manager. Upon retirement, he continued to enjoy lasting relationships with family and friends. He also enjoyed golf, snowmobiling, baseball, and life in Sacramento. He was preceded in death by his wife after 58 years of marriage. Orville is survived by one son, Douglas. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 16, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at Lombard & Company Funeral Directors, 1550 Fulton Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95825 (916) 483-3297, one block South of Arden Way. A native of Starsville, GA, aged 91 years. MacDONALD, LYNNE (HOCHHALTER) Was born on October 25, 1956. She passed away due to complications following surgery in Sacramento, California on November 10, 2001. She is survived and cherished by her loving husband of 22 years, Scott MacDonald; and her children, Adam (18), Amber (16), Alan (14), Alyssa (I1). She is also survived by her mother, Darleen (and Elmer) Hoover, Bismarck, North Dakota; father, Milton (and Darlene) Hochhalter, Baker, Montana; brother Bryan (and Holly) Hochhalter of Calgary, Alberta; brother Greg (and Corrine) Hochhalter of Kelowna, British Columbia; along with many in-laws, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends. Lynne was preceded in death by a brother Ross, in 1965. Lynne was born in Fargo, North Dakota and raised in Bismarck. She pursued post-secondary education at North American Baptist College, Edmonton, Alberta, and completed a Bachelors Degree from the University of Sioux Falls in 1979. Lynne will be remembered most for her unwavering dedication and love for her family, especially her children. She was committed to using her gifts and talents for Christian ministry, specifically in her area of passion, which was music. She was a vocalist and keyboard player in the Contemporary Christian Band "Straight Street," and was a member of First Baptist Church, Elk Grove, California. McCORMACK, RUTH MARY (CASEY PHILLIPS) In Sacramento, November 10, 2001. Beloved wife of the late Albert Dana Phillips Jr., MD, and T.B. (Bulen) McCormack; loving mother of Albert Dana Phillips III, Mary Kathryn Healy, and the late Elizabeth Rulison (Hanson) Nyland of Walnut Grove; sister of Kathryn Alice Peterson and sister-in-law of Jack Peterson; predeceased by her brother, John S. Casey Jr, and sister Mrs. Jack (Ellen) Mier; also survived by 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A 3rd generation Sacramentan, aged 94 years. MERWIN, WILLIAM "BILL" HENRY Passed away on October 31, 2001 at home in Clarksburg. He was 76. He is survived by his loving wife, Donna; three children: Susan Oates of Woodland, Alison Merwin Eyster of Roseville, and John Merwin of Clarksburg. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Zach Oates, Drew Eyster, Todd Eyster, Lauren Eyster, Daniel Merwin, Sara Merwin, Emma Merwin; and a sister, Lois Hunn. Bill was born September 10, 1925. A life-long resident of Clarksburg, he graduated from Clarksburg High School. After serving as an infantryman in the US Army in both the WW II European and Pacific theaters, Bill spent two years at UC Davis. He was an avid pilot and founding member of the Cal Aggie Flying Club at UCD known as the "Flying Farmers". He finished the final two years of his Bachelor's degree in Business and Agricultural Economics at UC Berkeley. Bill returned to Clarksburg to farm with his father and brother-in-law as Hunn & Merwin & Merwin, Inc. He farmed until 1990 when he retired to travel and fly. Bill served his community well as a very active participant with the Clarksburg Community Church, West Sacramento Rotary, Yolo County Farm Bureau, Boy Scouts, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapters 25 and 52 supporting the Young Eagles flying program which acquaints young people with the joy of flying. He served on many local, county, and state committees promoting agriculture throughout his life. Bill was generous, kind, and had a great sense of humor. He shared his passion for flying with everyone he could. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. NEWTON, RICHARD L. Born January 8, 1934 to Milton Henry and Edna Lois (Fortenberry) Newton in Norman Park, GA. He passed away peacefully at home on November 8, 2001 in Rocklin, CA after a long battle with cancer. Retired in 1980 at Beale AFB after 28 years of active military service. He then went on to work for Lockheed Aircraft Service Company for four years living in Saudi Arabia. Upon returning to the United States in 1984 he became an Air Force Civil Service Employee at Beale AFB, transferred to England and finally McClellan AFB before retiring due to cancer in 1994. Survived by his loving family Dorothy Lee (Hortman) Newton, wife of 48 years; two sons Richard D. Newton and wife Jill of Jacksonville, FL; Jerry L. Newton and wife Laurie of Oak Harbor, WA; daughter Kim Harges and husband Rick of Meadow Vista, CA; Akie Newton of Oak Harbor, WA; Grandchildren Tami and Tina Newton; Jennifer, Jessica and Kellie Newton; Casey and Corey Harges. JOSEPH JR. Joseph Niedzwiedz, born on September 11, 1935, passed away gently at home in Sacramento, California on November 6, 2001, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived and cherished by his beloved wife of 42 years, Judith Trowe Niedzwiedz. He also leaves and is loved by his son John Niedzwiedz, daughter Alicia Davis, son-in-law Aaron Davis, Sr., grandsons Carl and Adam Niedzwiedz and Aaron Davis Jr., and granddaughter Anna Davis, all of Sacramento. He is survived and cherished by his loving mother Veronica Niedzwiedz, brother Charles Niedzwiedz and sister-in-law Saundra, nephews Donn Niedzwiedz (April and Cody) all of Westminster, South Carolina, and Chris Niedzwiedz (Brenda) of Florida. His father Joseph Niedzwiedz Sr. preceded him in death. Mr. Niedzwiedz was born and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut, educated in Fairfield County schools and entered the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He served with Air Rescue in Labrador and the Strategic Air Command at Travis and Mather Air Force Bases. He left the Air Force in 1961 and owned and operated two Joe's Chevron Stations in Sacramento for 28 more years. After retiring he worked as a diesel engine mechanic at the Sacramento Lumber Jack Distribution Center, retiring only after a long battle with lung and tongue cancers. Mr. Niedzwiedz was an avid golfer, mariner and fisherman, spending many hours on the links and waterways around California and beyond. He was a member and past president of the Sacramento Lions Club and a member and past Commander of the Twelfth District U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. He had an extensive collection of polkas and other Polish music which he loved to share with family and friends. He has been cared for at home by his wife for the last ten years and spent his last days in the loving embrace of his family. The family wishes to thank the staff of Kaiser Hospice Program for the care and support which provided comfort, love and dignity to Mr. Niedzwiedz & his family in his final days. A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Florin Road and Gardner Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95828. Inurnment will be private and there will be no visitation. POWELL, CHARLES In Sacramento on November 11, 2001. He is survived by his children Linda Bonnet and Jeff Powell; Grandchildren Sheri Bonnet and Sean Bonnet; Great-granddaughter April Butler; and a sister MaryJane Lillard. SEPAROVICH, MICHAEL J. In Sacramento, November 10, 2001 at the age of 94. He was the loving father of James (Janis), Robert (Patricia) and Richard (Marianne) Separovich. The adoring grandfather of Rebecca (Todd) Wolger, Michelle (Todd) Carrey, David, Matthew (Kristi), Mark, Michael, and Monica Separovich. Great grandfather of Jack & Lucas Wolger, Jason & Will Carrey and John Separovich. Brother in law of Marie and Theresa Separovich. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive him. He was the husband for 62 years of the late Mary Manassero Separovich. He was the brother of the late Tony and Mark Separovich and Francis Kavaloski. A Sacramento resident for 91 years Michael was born on September 10, 1907 in the town of Blato, on the island of Korcula on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, which was, at the time, a province of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His parents brought him to Sacramento at the age of 3 years. He graduated from the old St. Stephens School and attended Sacramento High School. He played semi pro baseball as a young man and has been inducted into several local bush league halls of fame along with his two brothers Tony & Mark. Michael also played soccer. He and his brother Mark were on the Dante Club teams that, in the twenties defeated the Olympic Club of S.F. two years in a row to win the State Cup. Michael worked as a machinist and tool maker at the Southern Pacific shops, starting his employment there in 1922 at the age of 15 and retiring in 1972. He was a charter member of Sutter Lodge No. 536 of the International Association of Machinists serving as an officer and representative. He was active in the Sons in Retirement, the Eagles Lodge, The Southside Improvement Club, The Italian Catholic Federation and the LaSalle Club of Christian Brothers High School. He was an honorary alumnus of Christian Brothers. Family and friends are welcome to the Recitation of the Rosary Wednesday at 6PM in the LAND PARK CHAPEL OF HARRY A. SWARTZ, KAY ELLEN Kay Ellen Swartz was born Feb. 1, 1955, in Roseville, CA, passed away in the morning of Nov. 8, 2001, at her home in Antelope, CA. Beloved wife, of Raymond E. Swartz and loving mother of Stacey D. House and son-in-law Brent A. House. Kay is survived by her brothers Emil H. Bosick, Jr. of Sacramento, CA, and William G. Bosick of Wheatland, CA, and by her sister Deborah D. Bosick of Washington, DC, was a graduate of Roseville High School in 1973. She worked in the insurance industry 17 years for All State, Etna, and USAA. Kay brought love and happiness to all those who knew her. She will be missed dearly. There will be a visitation on Wed., Nov. 14 from 4PM until 8PM at PRICE FUNERAL CHAPEL (6335 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, 725-2109). Funeral Services will be held on Thurs., Nov. 15 at 2PM.
