DURST, ELEANOR LUCILLE Died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at the age of 81. Born Feb. 24, 1920, Mrs. Durst was the third of four daughters of Cecelia Odland and Hans Kalberg. She grew up in Volga, South Dakota, where her father was the mailman and her mother was a nurse. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor's Degree in nursing. During World War II, as a nurse at a military hospital, she met and then married Melvin Durst. Mrs. Durst, as a mother of seven children and a foster son, encouraged self-reliance and social responsibility. Toward these goals, she became involved in the Capay and Esparto schools' political infrastructure, plays, musical events and immunization drives. She was an integral part of Esparto's Countryside Community Church's music and Christian education programs. In support of her son, Timothy, who preceded her in death, she was involved in the planning of Greengate School for exceptional children. Later in life, Mrs. Durst cared for seniors as a home-health nurse and with Yolo County Mental Health. She retired in 1985, but was asked to come back on a part-time basis. She received an award for her contributions. When she moved to Sacramento in 1981, she devoted her life to a central theme dear to her heart: Peace and Justice. Active in organizations such as Sacramento Religious Community for Peace, Sanctuary, Grandmothers for Peace, Mary House, Loaves & Fishes and many more. She believed that in order to bring about more justice in the world, it is necessary to continually remind people of the injustices that remain in the world. She was proud of her Norwegian immigrant history, believed in family gatherings, and lived her faith through action in all the phases of her life. Mrs. Durst is survived by her children, Jonathan Durst and wife Barbara, Ani Durst, Deborah Durst, Jeffrey Durst and wife Mary Savegeau, James Durst and wife Deborah, Daniel Durst and wife Cassandra; foster son, David Reeves, former husband, Melvin Durst, grandchildren Brooke, Jason, Erin, Yang-Hai, Gabriel, Jennie and Ivan. A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, Dec. 2 at 1p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N Street in Sacramento. Larry was an accomplished cook, he enjoyed classical music, shopping and taking his family on trips to the snow. Larry loved his family and spending time with them. Resident of Lincoln 19 years. A visitation is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 19th at 5:00pm with a Vigil to be held at 6:30 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Lincoln. A Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 20th at 10:00 AM, also at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at Lincoln Cemetery. Survivors include Katherine Ehlers, wife, of Lincoln, married twenty years; sons Robert Ehlers of Benicia, Jonathan, Matthew, Justin, and Marcus Ehlers of Lincoln; mother, Josephine Ehlers of Fullerton, CA; sister, Mary Rider of Keller, TX; brother, Charles Ehlers of Colorado Springs, CO; sister, Irene Elbe of Orange, CA; grandchildren Anna, Grant and Alycia Ehlers. Family suggests memorial donations to St. Vincent De Paul or the Cancer Society.
ENGELLEITER, KARL JOSEPH "K.J." Of Elk Grove, CA, born September 22, 1986; died in Sacramento, CA, November 14, 2001. Beloved son of Karl Von Engelleiter and step- mother Julie Engelleiter. Dear brother of Justin Engelleiter, Nyle Sans, Nick Yaksich, Zachary Yaksich and David Anderson. He is also survived by his mother Ruth Engelleiter, Grandfather Carl William Engelleiter, Aunts, Karleen Lukacs, Lore Hoke, Jamie Engelleiter; cousins Gordon Lukacs, Kari Lukacs, Leelynn Watson, Cherub Engelleiter, Michael Lukacs, Jaryd Lukacs, Derek Engelleiter, Amber Carey, and preceded in death by Grandmother Letha Engelleiter, Aunt Romaine Engelleiter and Uncle Roame Engelleiter. K.J. was a published young author. A lover of life, animals, music, laughter and his family. K.J. will be remembered for his unwavering love for his father, whose care and endearing love gave K.J. the strength to fight for his short 15 years that God blessed him to be with us. FAITH, DAVID David Faith died on November 5, 2001 in Sacramento, CA with his family at his side, following a long struggle with cancer. He was 52. Throughout his battle with that disease & all the other challenges of his life, he never allowed the hardships he faced to translate into a diminishing of his ideals or a darkening of his sou1. He was born January 18, 1949 in Fresno, CA to Patricia & Pastor Leland Faith. He & his father established an insurance agency together & he founded & was the CEO of the Sterling Group. He graduated from the Army-Navy Academy in 1967, received a BA in Russian History from University of California-Irvine & received a Juris Doctorate in 1980. He was a brilliant, witty & gifted orator, an avid & passionate scholar of history & politics, & most remarkably an honorable & generous man. He leaves behind in Sacramento sister & brother-in-law Gail & Leroy Marquez & niece Chantel Henry; in Bozeman, Montana, Nona Faith & their son, David Faith II, & Rob, Carol & niece, Jeanne Brown, Seattle, WA, daughter Shannon Grace (Krystof Sulewski), in Anaheim, CA, daughter & grandson Heather & Aaron Faith & in Chico, CA, Tina & niece, Norah Brennan. FARRIS, SOPHIA Sophia Farris was born in Beirut, Lebanon on May 12, 1900, and at the age of 11, she lived in Marseilles, France with her father and brother. They journeyed to America in 1912 and Sophia resided in Duluth, Minnesota, and Williston, North Dakota for many years before settling in Sacramento in 1947. She and her husband, John Farris, established a boarding house for college women before dormitories were available at California State University, Sacramento. From 1955 through 1959, several hundred young women from throughout California resided at their residence during their college years. Sophia was renowned among family and friends for her Middle Eastern cooking skills and everyone who visited her home was treated to her warm hospitality. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Altar Society in Williston and offered her sewing skills to the Sacramento Manor Bazaar for many years. Sophia was a resident of the Asian Community Nursing Home for almost nine years and the family gratefully acknowledges the loving care she received from their staff, particularly Marie Willis. Sophia was predeceased by her first husband, James Kalil, in 1931; and her second husband, John Farris, in 1990. She was the loving mother of Margaret Kalil (deceased), Mary Jean Kalil Brine and husband, Robert of Sacramento, Richard Farris and wife, Kathleen of Leeds, Massachusetts, Roseanne Farris (deceased) and Carole Farris Sharkey and husband David of El Dorado Hills. Sophia was devoted grandmother to Margaret Parilo, Roberta Brine, Jennifer Farris, Elizabeth Tatge, Diane Blume, Teresa Farris, Mary Farris Deitz, Melissa Farris and John Sharkey; and the great-grandmother of 16. FINDLEY, DIANNE C. Was given to the good Lord on November 15, 2001, after a long and courageous fight. Born Dec. 3, 1938. Survived by her beloved husband Larry R. Findley, her loving and devoted daughter Tamara Moeller, son-in-law Peter Moeller and her only grandson Tom Moeller. Preceded in death by her two sons Thomas N. Alldredge and Todd R. Hicks. She was co-owner of Goodies Galore with her daughter. She loved her family, friends and life. She was very active with the Fair Oaks Theatre Festival, Fair Oaks Chamber and Fair Oaks Inner Wheel. GILDING, LOIS Lois peacefully passed away on November 14, 2001 in Roseburg, Oregon. A native of Omaha, Nebraska, aged 74 years. GRAHAM SR., RALPH L. Passed peacefully at home with his wife by his side and family close by on November 8, 2001. He had celebrated his 86th birthday on November 3rd with family and friends. He was born in Salida, Colorado on November 3, 1915 and moved to California when he was eight. He attended school in Covina, California before moving to Northern California in 1937. Ralph received an honorable discharge from the Army in February 1942 (Machine Gunner, Co. "D", 3rd Div. - 15th infantry, WW II). He returned to Placerville, California where he married Leaphy Ruth Smith on May 31, 1942. They made their permanent home in Carmichael in 1952. Ralph and Ruth were looking forward to celebrating their 60-year wedding "anniversary of love" this spring. Ralph worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 37 years as a locomotive engineer before retiring in 1978. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, travel, and most of all his family. He loved to laugh. He was a loyal friend and was always willing to help, asking nothing in return. He was a loving husband, survived by his wife Ruth Graham of Carmichael, CA and the beloved father of four children, George A. Graham of Carmichael, CA; Loren Graham and wife Kati of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; Patricia Graham of Bethel Island, CA and Pamela Ellis of Delta Junction, Alaska. He was the cherished grandfather of Yhazi Kol Graham of Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii and Stacy Graham of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. By his request, there will be no funeral services.

KIM, MASTER RICHARD, PhD Passed away Thursday, November 8, 2001 in Sacramento, California at the age of 83. Beloved husband of May Kim Ph.D., and his family of martial arts students who lost their revered O' Sensei. Born in Hawaii in 1917, he began judo and boxing training in 1926, and furthered his work and studies under recognized masters throughout the world. In 1961 he set up residence in San Francisco and established the Zen Bei Butoku Kai Shorinji Ryu karate school at the Chinatown YMCA. Master Kim was the foremost karate historian and philosopher residing in the United States. He coached and traveled with USA karate teams that competed nationally and internationally. He moved to Sacramento in the late 1970's and became an author and lecturer. Master Kim was highly respected by his peers. He wrote articles for numerous magazines and his name is listed in the book of Martial Arts Preservation Association "Busen" in Japan. Master Kim has students in the United States, Canada and Europe. Many of them traveled to attend his classes and seminars, and eventually became instructors themselves. To this day, Master Kim's teaching legacy extends into many generations of students, from his original students, their children, their children and their grandchildren. LUCCHESINI, LUIGI ANTONIO (LOUIE) Born March 6, 1940 in Lucca, Italy; died unexpectedly at home on November 13, 2001. Beloved husband to Rosemary, wife of 37 years. Devoted father to Erina Lucchesini-Soria and husband Greg, Mariangela LaPerle and husband Joseph, Rosie Lucchesini and fiance Ryan Jack. Devoted grandfather to Daniela and Antonio (Tony) Soria. ORLANDO, VINCENT J. Born December 23, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY. Passed away November 14, 2001. Devoted husband to Jean. Loving father to Nancy Crooks, Doug Orlando, Steve Orlando, Shelly Epstein and Donna Washburn. Beloved grandfather to Peter, Amy, Debby, Kelly, Tammy, Brian, Augustus, Madeline, Lauren and Courtney. Proud U.S. Navy WWII veteran who served on the U.S.S. Nashville and loved his country. Retired Chief Accountant from McClellan AFB. Received the Air Force Association Logistics Middle Management Award. After retirement owned a successful private accounting practice in Carmichael and was a certified IRS agent. An avid sports fan who loved the Sacramento Kings and a true blue Dodgers fan. Coached his childrens leagues at Tahoe Pallac and Carmichael Park along with Mercy High School softball. Graduate of Sac City College and CSUS. He was an active member of the community and area resident for 55 years. He did bookkeeping for Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, was a member of the American Legion, worked at the polling booth and volunteered on the American River Fire District Board. He loved to travel and spent a month every summer with his family seeing the sights of America. A computer enthusiast since the early TRS 80 days. He was a member of the Sacramento PC users group and taught computer classes at Our Lady of the Assumption and Presentation. He was a kind and loving man and will be missed by all. A Rosary and Vigil will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption in Carmichael on Monday, at 7 P.M.
RAY, BRUCE N. Passed away Nov. 9, 2001 in Reno, NV, age 56. Born in Whittier, CA. Sadly missed by his sons, Pat and Mike and their families; 3 grandchildren; sister, Carol Simpson; nieces & nephews. Graveside service will be Tues., Nov. 20, 2001 at noon at Mt. Vernon.
REESE, CHARLES EDWARD In Carmichael, November 13, 2001. Age 43 years. A native of San Francisco, moved to Sacramento area in 1971. Beloved son of the late Robert & Gloria Reese. Father of Jacqueline Danielle, and Joshua Anthony. Beloved brother of Debra, Michael, Matthew, Mark and Victoria Reese, and their families. A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, Nov. 19th, at First Evangelical Free Church, 5300 Madison Ave. at 4:00 pm. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Charlie, (affectionately known as "Fish"), will always be remembered for his love and devotion to family and friends, as well as his sense of humor. RINEHART, GUY SHERMAN Guy "Gus" Rinehart passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2001 after battling prostate cancer. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Cecilia and is survived by his loving wife Delene of Orangevale. He is also survived by his brother, Robert W. Rinehart of Sacramento, his son Dennis Rinehart of Napa, his daughter, Janet Bauerly of Livermore and his step-daughters Linda Walden and Harriett Ensign, both of Fair Oaks. Gus was born on June 24, 1923 to his adoring parents Guy Alton Rinehart and Vava Grogan in Ames, IA. He attended grammar school and high school in Iowa. Here he started his life long interest in sports, specifically tennis and golf. He later attended Drake University and ultimately graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Business. Gus served as a Captain and pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was stationed in Paris, France. After completing his tour of duty, he came to California in 1946. Gus then moved to Sacramento and went to work with the State of California, Department of Finance. After 30 years of service he retired in 1978. While raising his two children he still managed to remain active in competitive amateur golf, participating in such tournaments as the State Fair Golf Tournament. His golfing continued after his retirement and he even managed a trip to Saint Andrews in Scotland. While we mourn his passing, we will always remember his silly jokes, loving smile and kind heart. ROE, MASON G. Mason Gordon Roe, born October 18, 1922 passed away at home in Roseville, California on November 9, 2001 with the family present. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lorraine Roe, loving daughter Allison Roe Dake, and three grandchildren. Mason was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army, and after the war completed his education receiving a Master's degree from the University of Southern California. A lifelong resident of California, Mason was a distinguished teacher in the Santa Ana Union School District for more than 30 years. An accomplished sailor, he enjoyed taking trips to Catalina on his boat with family and friends. He especially enjoyed international travel, and spent time in Europe on several occasions. He took his family to England for a year while on sabbatical leave. After retiring from teaching, Mason moved his family to the Central Coast of California, living on a small ranch in Templeton. He became a guide at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, and also wrote articles for a local newspaper. A love of antiques was always with him, and he became a dealer after moving to Roseville, California. Mason was loved by the many people he touched and will be missed by all. At the request of the family, there will be no services. SERPA, ALBERT GEORGE Born October 28, 1914 in Clarksburg, CA. Passed away November 15, 2001. Survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Jane (Silva), daughters: Susan Serpa of Sacramento and Judith Ann Cooper and her husband Ed of Oregon, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by parents Emma Josephine (Lial) and Antone Joseph Serpa, brothers Tony Serpa and LeRoy Serpa and sister Magdalene (Gay) Orlandi. Albert was retired from PG&E after 38 years of loyal service. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was an avid football, baseball, and basketball player throughout his years at Courtland High School and U.C. Davis. At U.C. Davis he was affiliated with the Beta Phi Fraternity. He participated in Sacramento's Softball League from 1946-1965, and was honored by the "Sacramento Softball Hall of Fame for His Outstanding Ability". Albert will be sadly missed by his family and friends. LEE L. Born March 6, 1931 in San Diego, CA., passed away peacefully at his home November 12, 2001 with his family and friends at his side. Lee is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. Lee was a founder and owner of the Phoenix Lounge and Casino for the passed 12 years. Lee's passions included poker, football, and many outings to the race track with family and friends. Lee's many stories of poker room lore and his dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him well. At Lee's request, no services will be held. "Life is not about the amount of time we're given, but what we did with the time we had."
STAUB, KATHY In Sacramento, November 14, 2001. A resident of West Sacramento with husband of 24 years, Emil "Red" Staub. Loving mother of Linda Reliford, Jan Nesbitt, Larry (Suzi) Staub, Dan (Brenda) Staub, and Max Staub. Dear sister of Judy (Johnny) Curzi and sister-in-law of Grace Gavin. Kathy was preceded in death by her son Lee Joseph Elliot and her brother Jim Gavin. Kathy's greatest hobby was her family; she will be missed. A native of Pennsylvania aged 57 years. Friends may visit on Monday, November 19, 2001 from 1-8 PM in the River Cities Funeral Chapel, 910 Soule St., West Sac. and are invited to attend Funeral Services for Kathy on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 in the chapel thence to St. Mary's Cemetery
