DAVIDIAN, VIOLA STONE Born October 4, 1917 in Berkeley, CA; passed away November 19, 2001 in Placerville. Mrs. Davidian moved to Placerville with her late husband Ernie Stone in 1946. In 1947, she had Bee's Beauty Shop on Main St. in Placerville. Over the years she owned several shops, including Dynamic Images, her last shop before retiring in 1977. In earlier years she was involved with the Placerville Shakespeare Club. After retirement, Viola and her husband Cale traveled. She also had been a member of the Placerville Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernie Stone in 1965; son Jim in 1992; and sister Lita Palacin. She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Caleb Davidian; sons Arlan Davidian of Arkansas, Jim Davidian of Riverside, Dick Davidian of Calamesa, Jan Davidian of Riverside; daughter in law Jo Stone Beldner of Placerville; brothers Fred Klingbeil of Santa Rosa, Rich Klingbeil of Anguin, CA; sisters Gladys Seifert of Orinda, CA, and Fran Arnold of Napa. DRAKE, ROSE CHRISTINE Born March 17, 1913 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Passed away in Sacramento November 19, 2001. Preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Harold in 1990. Loving mother of Douglas H. Drake of Sacramento and Susan (Drake) McBride and son-in-law John D. McBride. Beloved sister of Michael Neudauer and Florence Johnson, both of Minnesota; predeceased by eight other brothers and sisters. Rose and Harold moved to the Monterey Bay area during World War II, settling in North Monterey County, close to Watsonville. She was in charge of the Quality Control Lab at Watsonville Canning Company for over 20 years, retiring in 1978. She and Harold traveled extensively throughout their retirement in the United States, Canada, Caribbean, and Europe. In September 2000, Rose moved to Sacramento to be closer to her children. She passed on her love of reading, Cribbage, and card playing to her children, family members, and friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rose Drake Memorial Fund at the University of California Davis, Department of Agriculture or your favorite charity. GRISSETT, JUDITH (JUDY) Passed away at home on November 17, 2001 at the young age of 56. HEIDRICK, FREDERICK CLARK Fredrick Clark Heidrick passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2001, at Woodland Memorial Hospital, at the age of 81. He was born on May 23, 1913 in Artois, California and was the second child of Andrew and Wildah (Harrison) Heidrick, who predecease him. His family moved to Woodland in 1915, where he and his brother Joe engaged in farming for over 50 years. Fred collected Antique Farm equipment for about 40 years, ending up with one of the largest collections in the United Sates, and then opened a tractor museum in 1997. Predeceasing him also is his wife of 55 years, Helen Heidrick, a daughter, Barbara Roff, a grandson, Steven Heidrick, his brothers Joe and Emmett Heidrick, and sisters Ethel Oeste and Louise Farnham. Very much loved by his surviving family, he leaves his son, Fredrick Heidrick Jr. and wife Sandra, his daughters, Nancy Gnoss and Husband Joe, all of Woodland, and daughters Linda Lucchesi and husband Fred, and Judy Schneider and husband Carl, all of Sacramento; as well as son-in-law Robert Eoff of Woodland. Also surviving are 17 "beloved" grandchildren and 22 "dear" Great grandchildren; his sister Vera Gorman, and sisters-in-law Mildred Heidrick, Edith Heidrick and Dorothy Smith; brother-in-law Earl Rogers, dear friend Vera Hulse and many nieces and nephews. KASPAR, PETER A Celebration of Life and Memorial service for Peter Kaspar, 67 of Vacaville will held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at Chapel One, Travis Air Force Base. Father Gregory Malinsky will officiate. Mr. Kaspar died suddenly on November 20, 2001, at his beloved Delta Breeze Club, Travis Air Force Base. Born April 9, 1934, in Glendive, Montana, he moved to Munich, Germany in 1937 and attended Milbertshofen Academy before returning to the United States in 1951. Mr. Kaspar continued his life long interest in the culinary arts, owning his own restaurant in Grass Valley for many years. In 1992, he accepted the position of Chef at the Travis Air Force Base Officers' Club, having served in the same capacity at Mather Air Force Base from 1987-1992. Currently, he was the Chef at the Delta Breeze Club at Travis. He loved gourmet and display cooking, antique cars, gardening, and football. He was a member of the National Restaurant Association, the International Order of Chefs, and was a mentor to graduates of the Lederwulff Culinary Academy. Mr. Kaspar is survived by his wife, Deborah; daughters, Alyssa and Erika of Vacaville; sons, Sean Grayson of Rocklin, Kent and Kevin Kaspar of Grass Valley; daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Buddy Casner of Placerville and Esther and Kenneth Nicholls of Glide, Oregon; three brothers and one sister; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and dear friends. LOW, GUM JOY (COOKIE) Born October 6, 1916 in the village of Zhongshan, China. Passed away November 19, 2001. Cookie entered the United States in 1939 through Angel Island and settled in Walnut Grove, a farm community in the California Delta where he lived and worked for Lum Bunn and Sons. Cookie also made community contributions by serving terms as Vice President, President, Secretary and finally as an Executive Board Member for the local Jang Sing Benevolent Association. His terms of community service exceeded over 55 years and are well recognized by the Chinese Community of Locke and Walnut Grove. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Yin Ping (Sarah) Low, loving father to Agnes Kan and her husband Tony from Vancouver, BC, Sandra Low and her husband Lim from Pleasanton, CA, Nancy Woo and her husband Darrel, Eileen Park and her husband Steven, Terry Hamasaki and her husband Fred, Michael Low from Sacramento, CA, Debra Miyamoto and her husband Stan from Danville, CA and Alan Low and his wife Patricia from El Sobrante, CA. Proceeded in death by her Husband Charles in 1977 Della was one of eleven children, born to Sam & Jeanie Lake. Raised in Yuba City, Della moved to San Francisco in 1939 and opened a Beauty shop. WEEKS, JACK W. In Sacramento on 11-22-01. Mr. Weeks was born in 1929 in Durant, Oklahoma. He passed away from lung cancer and emphysema. He served in the Army and Air Force for ten years and worked for Delta Trucking Co. & Matheson Trucking Co. for 30 years. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a warm, friendly personality. He is survived by his sisters, Katherine Ogburn of Dalhart, Texas, Evelyn Long and Willie Maude Harvey of Oklahoma City, Rachel Weeks and brother, Dan Weeks of Sacramento, as well as by other loving family members and friends. The services will be held November 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
WESTCOT, GEORGE DUANE George D. Westcot passed away quietly, after a long illness, in Citrus Heights Thursday, November 22, 2001. He was 74 years old. Born in Winterset Iowa, son of George and Ella on October 8th, 1927 he was an engineering graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York and served as an officer in the US Navy. He joined Aerojet in 1955 as a test engineer in Azusa, Ca. He held a number of executive positions within Aerojet, including President of Graver Energy Systems of East Chicago, and concluded his 34 year career as President of Aerojet Solid Propulsion Company and Gencorp Group Vice President in 1990. A resident of Roseville, he was involved in numerous community organizations, including the Sacramento Safety Council, The United Way, The Navy League and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Jackie Lord Westcot, three sons, George, Michael, Duane and wife Cathy, two daughters, Patricia and Virginia and husband John Wells, and three grandchildren, John Westcot Wells, Sara Frances Westcot and Jack Robert Westcot. Memorial service will be held 10 AM, Thursday, November 29th at St. Rose Catholic Church, 615 Vine Avenue Roseville, Ca. Mary Short turned helping disabled into art form
Mary Virginia Short saw beauty in the faces of the people with developmental disabilities whom she spent a lifetime nurturing.
The founder of the Short Centers to help disabled people in Sacramento and Stockton died of pneumonia Thanksgiving Day at the UC Davis Medical Center. She was 73.
Her husband, retired state Sen. Alan Short, said his wife started her first art program for the disabled 25 years ago with three teachers and six students.
"She had found her life's work," he said. "She gave it everything she had."
Now, more than 350 people with developmental disabilities participate in seven programs, which include three Short Centers and others that offer assisted living, housing, employment and education.
Mrs. Short founded Developmental Disabilities Service Organizations, the nonprofit organization that operates the programs.
A former lobbyist, she used her political skills to raise the money for the programs, but she gave her heart to her students.
"She touched lives. She did it with a grace, an ability and a love that's absolutely remarkable," said Alan Short.
She viewed the students as her own, he said. She took the square dancers and acting students to other states to participate in programs. Many stopped in the middle of their artwork to say hello to her as she walked by.
She had no relatives or close friends who made her aware of issues facing the developmentally disabled, but her husband said she knew adversity while growing up.
Mrs. Short was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Princeton, Mo., and started working at age 13, digging potatoes. She became an airline hostess at 18, worked as a lobbyist and then was hired to work in Short's Senate office before marrying him in 1969.
She had a keen interest in her husband's legislation including the landmark Short-Doyle Act and other mental health legislation. Representing Sacramento and San Joaquin counties for 22 years, he also sponsored legislation to provide free public education to the disabled.
Mrs. Short founded the "Very Special Art Show," a statewide show that featured the creations of developmentally disabled people for 25 years.
Amy Nishimura, the organization's chief executive officer, said Mrs. Short saw qualities in the faces of the developmentally disabled that others didn't see.
"Their honesty is what captured her," she said.
Mrs. Short even tried to photograph that honesty. She went to Yosemite National Park and took photo lessons from Ansel Adams. Her husband said he came home one day and found a carpenter building a darkroom in their home.
Mrs. Short photographed the athletes at the Special Olympics and started photography classes for the Short Center students.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Short is survived by her brother, Sherman Hill of Kansas City, Mo.; and her adopted daughter, Bonnie Ritchie of Sonora.
A celebration of her life will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the school she helped purchase for the Sacramento Short Center at 2331 St. Marks Way.

ADUNA, PETER RAMIREZ Born on July 4, 1914 in Narvacan Ilocos Sur, Philippines. Peacefully entering into rest on November 21, 2001. Survived by his devoted and loving wife, Fe Aduna; sons and daughter-in-laws, Bob Aduna, Paul & Beth Florendo, Paul & Pagette Aduna and John & Nicolle Aduna; grandchildren, Bobby Aduna, Nicole & Nathan Saracino, Misty Aduna, Felicia Florendo, Jasmine Aduna and Gabriel Aduna; great-granddaughter, Nataliya Saracino; nieces Liliwa Queral & Virginia Cabras; in-laws, Dioscoro & Erlinda Valila, Eddie & Ammie Valila, Mederdo & Teresita Valila, Julius & Josie Heriales, Joey & Veronica Valila & Feli Valila. Ninang Lucy and countless relatives in the Philippines. A resident of Sacramento for over 65 years. During WWII he served with the US Army's 1st Calvary Division. Participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands under General Douglas MacArthur. He worked for various Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement agencies before and after the war as a police officer, undercover officer and official court interpreter. Languages spoken and written include eight dialects of the Filipino language, not to mention Spanish, Japanese and dialects of the Chinese language. He finally retired from the Sacramento Army Depot where he worked for over 35 years. After retirement he earned his Bachelor of Arts & Science Degree in Sociology from CSUS with a 4.00 G.P.A. Member of American Legion Post 604, VFW, Vasayan Association and Toastmasters. Peter was a strong Christian that had tremendous faith in God. He will be sorely missed by family and friends, but will always be remembered for all of his wonderful deeds and strong sense of humor that touched us all. BRANDON, GATLIN R. Passed away in Sacramento, California on Sunday, November 25, 2001 at the age of 86. Gatlin was born in Albion, Washington to William & Dora Brandon on December 6, 1914. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Community Church, veteran of World War II and retired as a Lt. Col. from the United States Army and also retired from the Oregon State Health Laboratory as Director. Gatlin was preceded in death by his wife Frances Brandon. He is survived by his children; Randall Brandon and his wife Jan, Jeffrey Brandon and his wife Nancy, and Kent Brandon and his wife Cindy, grandchildren; Lisa Brandon, Julie Carter, Eric Brandon, and Christine Brandon, and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Lambert Funeral Home, 400 Douglas Blvd., Roseville, California on Saturday, December 8, 2001 at 1:00 P.M.
