Survived by six children, Gerald Kallis of Redding, Sharon Phelps of Shingle Springs, Robert Kallis of Rancho Cordova, Loretta Hance of Reno, NV, Patricia Perry of Reno, NV, Clifford Kallis of Folsom; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and eight step-great-grandchildren. Served in the U.S. Navy from 1941 to 1947, survivor of Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. Worked for Aerojet for 9-1/2 years. A long-time resident of Folsom. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ethel Kallis, 3 brothers and 1 sister. KODANI, KIYOSHI "KODY" Born on Feb. 5, 1930 in Yuba City, CA. Passed away on Nov. 22, 2001 in Sacramento, CA. In 1942, he and his family were relocated to the internment camps at Tule Lake, CA. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1951. He was sent to attend the FEC Intelligence School at Fort Oro in Monterey, CA. Upon graduation, he was sent to the Korean War where he served as an interpreter in the Military Intelligence Unit. He was a resident of Sacramento since 1956. he worked at McClellan AFB for 33 years; he retired in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Hiroko; sons Felix, Gary, and Ray; daughter Patty; grandchildren Ray (Carissa) and Greg; great-grandson Brandon and great-granddaughter Serena. He is also survived by his brothers Keiji, Shosaburo, Don; and sister Misaki. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 2:00PM at the Buddhist Church of Sacramento, 2401 Riverside Blvd.
KOTYLUK, MICHAEL 11/17/1910 - 11/25/2001 Survived by Stella Kotyluk, wife of 62 yrs. Preceded in death by a son Kenneth E. Kotyluk who was killed in Vietnam on April 24, 1968. Survived by son Ernie Kotyluk of Chico, Raymond Kotyluk of Woodland and daughter Michelle Herrera of Sacto. His siblings, Mary Didur, Olga Pawluk, Myron Kotyluk and Paul Kotyluk, all of Canada. 5 grandchildren, Lisa Adams, Amy Kotyluk, Kari Naquin, Tracy Kotyluk and Max Rasmussen. Two great grandchildren, Elijah and Michallah Kotyluk-Naquin. He leaves many nieces and nephews who reside in Canada and California. Before his move from Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada to Sacramento, he was a school teacher for 24 yrs. He was retired from the County of Sacramento. He enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with his family. Services will be on Friday, November 30, 2001 at 12:00 p.m. at Mt. Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks. LA MATTINA, ELIZABETH MARY Died of complications from a long illness Nov. 24, 2001 in Sacramento, CA at the age of 91. She was born in Madera, CA, Dec. 12, 1910. The daughter of Eugene & Josephine Filiponi. She married Charles La Mattina of Madera who proceeded her in death in 1976. She is survived by 3 daughters, Beverley Wyatt, Dolores Schlemmer of Sacramento and Mary Casha of Hanford, CA; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Pitto, and Louise Weakland; brother, William Filiponi, all of Fresno, CA; numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary will be held at St Paul's Catholic Church in Sacramento on Tues. Nov. 27 at 7pm. Mass at St. Joachim's Catholic Church in Madera, 401 W. 5th St at 2pm on Wed. Nov. 28 with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery.
LANGE, MILDRED SCHERRER Died November 23, 2001 at the age of 90 in Carmichael. She was the daughter of pioneer Californians Frank and Minnie Scherrer in Placerville on May 22, 1911. Mildred is survived by husband Wally Lange and daughters Christine Warren and Joan Beall, son-in-law Donald Beall and three grandsons, Jeffery Beall, Kenneth Beall and Michael Warren and four great grandchildren. Mildred graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1932. She taught for a number of years in the Sacramento City Schools, retiring in 1969. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 5751 Locust Ave., Carmichael, on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at 10:00 AM. IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE LYONS, REBA LaJUNE Carter Was born the first of four children to William and Ida Carter on December 25, 1916, at Parsons, Kansas. Topeka, Kansas became the family's home when the railroad transferred her father in 1920. There she spent her childhood and received her elementary and high school education. She received her Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from Kansas State Teacher's College in Emporia, Kansas. While in college, Reba was active in sports, community activities, and clubs. She was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her professional career began in Topeka and Paoba, Kansas in 1940. In 1943, she married Lewis V. Austin and moved to Alameda, California. To this union, two children became a joy, Gilbert Harold (deceased March 12, 2000) and LaFrance K. Austin. The family lived in Denver, Colorado from 1945-1948. Reba's career began in San Francisco, teaching in the Child Development Program. The family moved again, this time to Sacramento, California. Reba earned many California teaching credentials. She taught elementary grades in Robla School District, Sacramento County, from 1954 to 1965, and was the first Black teacher there. She became one of the nation's first Head Start Directors (1965-1968). She taught in Cambridge, England the Summer of 1972, afterwards visiting many European countries, Hawaii and the Caribbean Islands. She also taught in Berkeley schools, and was a Head Teacher at the time of her first retirement in 1988. She was Head Teacher in the Richards Family Preschool in Berkeley, as well as the YMCA Child Care Program from 1991 to 1995. Reba was the recipient of many honors and awards for community services, including Woman of the Year, 1965. She also belonged to many professional organizations. In February 1979, Reba married Lenon Lyons. This was indeed a happy union, which added five step-children, and eight step-grandchildren. She departed this life on Wednesday, November 14, 2001. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Lenon: daughter, LaFrance; niece, Carolyn Lang and family in Lawrence, Kansas: nephew, David Carter and family of Elk Grove, California; cousin, Lazerine Davis and family of Oakland, California; Lenon's children, Sharon, Michael, Lennette, Dawn and Melba; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends all over the United States and Europe. Services were held Saturday, November 17, 2001 at 1 p.m. at the Hilltop Church of Christ in Richmond, Calif.
MAHONEY, PAULINE AMELIA THORNHILL Loving mother of Kenneth Brown of Gold River, CA and June Petsche of Harlan, IA, passed away on November 22, 2001 in Fair Oaks, CA. Preceded in death by a son, Gene M. Brown of Carmichael, CA and her husband Arthur Mahoney. She was born in Davidson, Oklahoma on March 22, 1915. She worked as a lab technician for the Children's Hospital in Oakland for over 35 years. She is survived by 10 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. MAXWELL, KENNETH L. In loving memory of Kenneth L. Maxwell who passed away on November 10, 2001. Kenneth was born in Napa, California, raised in Modesto, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UC Berkeley in 1937 and moved to Sacramento that same year. He rose to Senior Supervising Statistician during his 40 year career with the State of California. He was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1938, serving in many roles including deacon, elder, Commissioner to General Assembly and Clerk of the Session. While with the State, he was a member and Chapter President of the California State Employees Association. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Virginia Maxwell of Sacramento; children, Ronald Maxwell, Faye Elizabeth Lyser and Edward Maxwell of Sacramento and Lois Hallen of Burlingame; and five grandchildren. He was buried at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, near Modesto, on November 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held Saturday December 1, 2001 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. McDONALD, GEORGE H. 6/26/27 - 11/18/01 A native of Clarksburg, CA. Devoted husband of Shirley McDonald. Father of Duncan McDonald, Dawn McDonald and Jane Casey. Grandfather of Stewart, Joanna, MeiLin and Emma. Brother of Margaret Reynolds and Edwin McDonald. George co-owned the family business, the Holland Market in Clarksburg, for over 50 years. He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts and other community activities. He also served with great pride as a member of the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department for 43 years; of which 17 years were spent as Fire Chief. MOCK, JOHN ELLSWORTH John rested in peace at the Highland House of Grants Pass Oregon on 23 November 2001 at 11pm surrounded by his loved ones. Born on September 30, 1918 in Thunderhawk, South Dakota. He had seven brothers and one older sister. John was the second member of the family to travel from Thunderhawk, South Dakota arriving in Eugene, Oregon in the early 1930's. He joined his father and brothers in the car business in 1936 known as E.A. Mock and Sons. John had his own automotive business in Modesto, California in the 1950's and in Sacramento, California from 1968-1997. John remained in the car business all of his life. John was a caring, giving and free spirited man bringing smiles and happiness to all with his unusual sense of humor. He had a gift for telling stories and playing practical jokes of which many have gone down in history. He loved to fish, was an avid sport fan and a chocoholic. John was 50 year Member of the Elks Lodge of Carmichael, California and Grants Pass, Oregon. His surviving family include his two sons Gary E. Mock of Grants Pass, Oregon; John Richard Mock of Palm Desert, California and daughter Joy A. Jarrell of San Rafael, California. Two brothers, George Mock of Eugene, Oregon and Clair Mock of Elk City, Oklahoma. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. There will be a gathering at the race track during California State Fair Sacramento Cal Expo, on 30 August 2002 to celebrate his great love of horse racing and life. MOORE, JENNIE A. Passed away November 17, 2001 in Sacramento. Born December 9, 1913, a native of Sanger, California. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 60 years, Charles Darrell Moore. Jennie is survived by a brother, Angelo Lombardi of Sanger, sister-in-laws Mildred Lombardi of Sacramento & Ann Lombardi of Fresno, 3 nieces, Patricia Frediani, Nancy Welch and Linda Lombardi-Kenner, all of Fresno and dear family friend Jean Paolini of Sacramento. Also preceded in death by her parents Giulio and Angelina Lombardi, a sister Hazel and two brothers, Lawrence & Frank. A past president of the Easter Seal Guild, member of Tuesday Club, El Camino #428 Order of the Eastern Star for more than 25 years, where she held the office of Adah, past High Priestess of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. MOORE, ROBERT FORD At peace November 22, 2001. Born January 17, 1921 in Bryte, California and raised his family in San Francisco. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Gladys Ellen Thompson Moore; son, Bruce and his wife Eileen; daughter, Janice; son, Brian; daughter, Diane and her husband Evar; son, Jay and his wife Theresa; son, Matthew and his wife Yolande; grandchildren, Stephanie, Stephen, Jennifer, Elliott, Rachel, Joanna, Laura, Patrick, David, Robert, Grace, Gregory, Garreth, Wylie, John and Connie; sister, Erma Bowa; brothers, Russell Gosland and wife Bernice; James Moore and wife Lida; Frederick Moore and wife Trudy; Edward Moore and wife Mary; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He is missed by a loving host of friends and preceded in death by his brothers, Alvin and William, and his parents, Frederick Henry Moore and Genevieve Meyer Moore. Well-known and respected throughout the elevator trade, he was a 50-year member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 8. He retired in 1983 and relocated from San Francisco to Sebastopol, CA where he enjoyed gardening, woodworking and stained glass. Active member in the Elks Club, Marin Rod and Gun Club, the Italian Catholic Federation and his Church, St. Joseph's of Cotati. NOHL JR., LESSING HAROLD Passed away on November 24, 2001 at the age of 71. A current resident of Carmichael, CA. Lessing is survived by his wife Marsha Nohl; his children Kendra Louther, Erika Nohl, Matthew Berenstein & Justin Berenstein; and his brother Eric Nohl; and 5 grandchildren. NUTTER, JANE BONHAM Born June 10, 1920 in Stockton, California. Passed away November 21, 2001 in Roseville at the age of 81. Jane was preceded in death by her son, Glen. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Lloyd Nutter. Beloved mother of Scott Nutter and Bruce Nutter and his fiancee Maureen Newcome and Scott Nutter of Roseville. Cherished grandmother of Nicholas, Russell, and Andrea Nutter of Roseville. Loving twin sister of Alice Gates and sister-in-law to Bill Gates of Pacific Grove, California. She lived in the Roseville area for over 44 years. Tireless volunteer to numerous schools and organizations. She was always there when we needed her and never put herself first. We miss her grace and humility. She was a wonderful lady and will never be forgotten. No service at Jane's request.
ORTH, DONALD N. Of Fair Oaks, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2001, age 68. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska May 1, 1933. Survived by beloved fiancee, Barbara Siemens, of Fair Oaks; devoted son, Stephen Orth, Kingsport, TN and loving son, David Orth, Citrus Heights; adoring daughters, Barbara Armlin, Rancho Murieta, and Kimberly Orth, San Diego, CA; and 4 grandchildren. He was a retired California Highway Patrol Officer, retired Major for USAF for 20 years, veteran of the Korean & Vietnam wars, member of the VFW, and HAM Radio Organization of America. PETERSON, GLADYS H. Passed away peacefully on November 20th at the age of 92 in her Sacramento home with her two sons at her side. Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Ervin L. Peterson, a son and daughter in infancy, sister Frances Kettenring of Vancouver, Washington and brother Frank Haberlach of Clackamas, Oregon. Survived by sons E. Kent of Sacramento and Stephen F. of Seattle and cousins, nieces and nephews. Gladys was born to Frank and Anna (Tinnerstet) Haberlach on November 27, 1908 on the family farm in Clackamas, Oregon. Her unassuming, gentle nature and unselfishness belied the depth and richness of her life experiences. After a rich and happy childhood in Clackamas she graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in education. After attending graduate school at the University of Washington she began a career in education which included being Dean of Women and the Women's Varsity Basketball Coach at West Linn, Oregon. In her early thirties she met and married Ervin L. Peterson. They lived in Coquille, Oregon before moving to Salem, Oregon. When her husband entered state government upon giving birth to her children in Salem, she became a homemaker and loving provider to her family. From 1954 to 1967 her family resided in Bethesda, Maryland while her husband served in the federal government and subsequently in the private sector. In 1967 Gladys and Ervin moved to their home in Sacramento where has since resided except for a brief return to D.C. in the early 1970's. This unpretentious and gracious lady had the privilege of traveling throughout the world, had met the Pope, the President of the United States and many other dignitaries and world figures. Gladys was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at U. of O. and for over a half a century was a member of P.E.O. the national woman's service organization in which she served in various leadership capacities. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Sacramento. Gladys was a precious lady adored and deeply loved by her family and friends and who will miss her greatly. Family and friends are welcome to a final viewing from 9am to 11 am followed by a graveside service at 11am at the East Lawn Mortuary and Sierra Hills Memorial Park, 5757 Greenback Lane in Sacramento on Friday, November 30, 2001 and to a memorial service at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1300 N Street in Sacramento on Saturday, December 1st at 11 am. PORTA, THOMAS ANTHONY Retired, age 83, passed away November 24, 2001. He was the son of Thomas A. Porta and Marie "Mamie" Logamasino, brother of Louis Porta who passed away during WWII. Tom was born in Sutter Creek, CA on March 10, 1918. He was the loving husband of Rose Porta, loving father of Thomas A. Porta Jr. and Penny R. Burke, grandfather of Rodney Burke, Rhonda Takeuchi, Kelly Koster, Jenny Porta, and Ryan Burke, great grandfather of Jacob and Shayla. Also survived by nieces & nephews. He was a WWII Veteran and a 50 year member of Eagles #9, Past President of Rombulus Club and long time member of the Dante Club. Tom's hobbies were gardening and an avid "49er" fan. He was dedicated to his wife, Rose for 60 years. PRITCHARD, ALMA In Sacramento on November 24, 2001. Age 82. She is preceded in death by her son, Aubrey H. Pritchard, Jr., and she is " Gammie " to her cherished grandchildren, Stephanie Pritchard and Keith Pritchard. Mrs. Pritchard worked as Secretary to the Chief of Police at the Sacramento Police Department for 33 years. She was a long time member of the legal secretary's association. An avid golfer, she also loved to travel and sail. Friends are ivited to graveside services on Thursday at 3 PM at East Lawn Memorial Park, 43rd & Folsom Blvd.
