Bill Maartense
Private services are planned for Bill Maartense, who died Saturday in Boulder Creek. He was 49.
He was born in Humboldt County and lived in Santa Cruz County for 15 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Maartense is survived by wife Susan Maartense of Boulder Creek; sons Paul Maartense and Tim Maartense; sister Kathy Frazier of Montana; brothers Steve Maartense of Oregon, Mike Maartense of Oregon and John Maartense of Idaho; and a large extended family.

Private cremation is under the direction of Chapel of the Four Seasons in Santa Cruz.

Nielse Olsen
Services will be Saturday for Nielse Olsen who died Feb. 25 in Santa Clara. He was 91.

He was born in  Oklahoma and came to Santa Cruz in 1966, when he became caretaker of the Happy Valley Conference Grounds. He became the pastor of the Santa Cruz congregation of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1973.

He was very active in Farm Bureau and the 4-H.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Howard Ellis of Scotts Valley and Charles Wilkinson of Tucson, Ariz.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Memorial Chapel in Santa Cruz. He will be buried in Soquel Cemetery.

Katherine Getzschmann
Services will be Saturday for Katherine "Kitty" Getzschmann, who died Feb. 3 in Santa Cruz. She was 80.

She was born in Vallejo and moved to Soquel with her family when she was a teen-ager. She worked for Levi Strauss for many years and at Wrigley’s as an office supervisor.

Mrs. Getzschmann is survived by brother John Huber of Huntington Beach and two nieces.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Norman’s Family Chapel in Soquel.

Barbara Vaughan
Services will be March 19 for Barbara J. Vaughan, who died Feb. 22 in Escondido. She was 71.

She was born in Seattle. She lived for 20 years in Capitola and for 20 years in San Diego.

She was a driver for the Lift Line company.

Mrs. Vaughan is survived by daughters Vicki Grande of Poway, Valerie Bengiveno of San Jose, Cynthia McCormick of San Bernadino and Connie Sanchez of San Jose; son Mark Vaughan of Soquel; brother Jerry Nevenzel of Dopoe Bay, Ore. and 11 grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Sunday, March 19, at Soquel Community Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Harold Couse
Services will be private for Harold C. Couse, who died Thursday in Santa Cruz. He was 74.

He was born and raised in San Jose. In 1943, at age 17, he joined the U.S. Navy after his brother Earl was killed in the Battle of the Coral Sea. After the Navy, he returned to San Jose to complete his education and earned a bachelor’s degree at San Jose State and a master’s in education at Stanford University.

He began his teaching career at Mission Hill Junior High School in Santa Cruz, where he met and married Edna Van Orthwick. He taught social studies in Red Bluff for several years and completed a credential in 1965 to become a guidance counselor.

A man of diverse talents, he built his own house and co-authored a widely used high school sociology text book.

After his retirement, he and his wife returned to Santa Cruz in 1980, where he continued to pursue various woodworking projects and his interest in photography. He was a great fan of tennis, which he played regularly until shortly before his death. Between 1988 and 1995, he worked intermittently at CTB McGraw-Hill, where he read and scored standardized writing assessments.

He is survived by wife Edna; sons Scott and Clinton of Santa Cruz; sisters Pearl Anthenien of San Jose and Florence Couse of Waterford.

His sister Martha Kelley died in 1973.

Private services will be held later.

Norman’s Family Chapel is handling arrangements.

Elsie Catherine Doblick
Services were Tuesday for Elsie Catherine Doblick, who died Thursday in La Selva Beach. She was 81.

She spent her childhood in Clairton, Pa., and moved to Southern California in 1958. She moved to La Selva Beach 12 years ago.

She was an accomplished bridge player and belonged to many bridge clubs. She was a talented cook and family members said they would fondly remember the wonderful meals she routinely prepared for them.

Mrs. Doblick is survived by her husband of 54 years, Raymond E. Doblick of La Selva Beach; sons Steve Doblick of Santa Cruz and Raymond S. Doblick of Mammoth Lakes; daughters Marilou Alexander of La Selva Beach, Chris Ruane of San Jose and Jeanne Oakeshott of Swall Meadows; sisters Anne Skapik of Pittsburgh and Emily Wiencik of Cannonsburgh, Pa.; brother John Marks of Victorville; four grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Private services were Tuesday at Guadalupe Chapel in the San Juan Bautista Mission, with private burial at a later date.

Steven F. Lind
Services will be private for Steven Frederick Lind, who died Friday. He was 55.
He was born and raised in Modesto.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. After the war he worked as a gardener and a handyman.

Mr. Lind is survived by father Harold Lind of Aptos.

Contributions are preferred to a the SPCA or a favorite charity.

John W. Bullard III
Private services were held for John Wallace Bullard III, who died April 30 at Watsonville Community Hospital of cardiac arrhythmia. He was 34.

He was born in Elko, Nev.

He was a 1983 Soquel High School graduate. He later earned his associate’s degree at Cabrillo College.

He worked at Gayle’s Bakery, The Farm Bakery and Target in Watsonville.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and co-workers. He also enjoyed weightlifting, listening to music and comedy.

Mr. Bullard is survived by mother Shirley Bullard, brother Phil Bullard of San Luis Obispo, and nephew Zach Bullard.

Contributions are preferred to a favorite charity.

Kathleen Berg
Services will be Saturday for Kathleen Berg, who died Sunday in Santa Cruz. She was 72.

She was born in Sewickley, Pa.

She volunteered as a teacher’s aide for Capitola Elementary School for 23 years.

Mrs. Berg was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. She also enjoyed taking morning walks.

Mrs. Berg is survived by husband Richard Berg of Capitola; daughters Kathleen Moore of Ferndale and Sally Standage of Roy, Utah; sons Richard David Berg of Capitola and Robert Berg of Santa Cruz; sisters Margaret Glatz of Sarasota, Fla. and Sarah Caldwell of Perrysville, Pa.; brothers William Henry of Boynton Beach, Fla., James Henry of Memphis, Tenn., Joseph Henry of Ross Township, Pa. and Robert Henry of Marion Center, Pa.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.

Contributions are preferred to Father Flannagan’s Boystown, Omaha, Neb.

Agustin Vanegas
Services will be Friday for Agustin Vanegas, who died Monday at Watsonville Community Hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He lived in Watsonville for more than 30 years.

He was a retired longshoreman. He worked on his family ranch after his retirement.

Mr. Vanegas is survived by wife Felicitas Vanegas of Watsonville; son Eddie Vanegas of  Texas; daughter Antoinette Contreras of Watsonville; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville., from noon to 9 p.m. today. A rosary will be at 6 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at Assumption Church in Salinas, 100 Salinas Road.

Hal Taniguchi
Services will be May 20 for Hal M. Taniguchi, who died May 4 in Capitola. He was 78.

He was born in California and lived in Watsonville for more than 47 years.

He worked for Buchwalds Cold Storage for 20 years.

Mr. Taniguchi is survived by daughters Bonnie Shimasaki of Pasadena, Nancy Der of San Jose, Peggy Yamashita of Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Linda Truman of Salinas; son Byron Taniguchi of Watsonville; and four grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. at the Watsonville Buddhist Temple, 423 Bridge St.
