Matthew R. Kennedy
Services are March 24 for Matthew "Matt" Rodney Kennedy, who died Monday in a snowmobile accident in Oregon. He was 18.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Boulder,  Colo. He attended Sun River Preparatory School in Bend, Ore., for three years, where he acted in school plays and sang in the Central Oregon Children’s Chorus.

He was on the varsity wrestling team and played soccer at Bend High School. Mr. Kennedy moved to Santa Cruz a year ago. He graduated from Santa Cruz High, class of 2000 and worked at Sushi Now! on Pacific Avenue.

Mr. Kennedy climbed and worked at Pacific Edge. He was a member of the Y.O.U. youth group at Unity Temple, and had planned to study culinary arts after completing a Navy assignment.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Rod and Tracey Kennedy of Bend, Ore.; grandparents Clarke and Eliza Livingston Bingham of Santa Cruz and Bart Voorsanger of New York; great-grandmother Katherine Livingston; an aunt and three uncles; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Roxanna, who died in 1985.

Memorial services are 4 p.m. March 24 at Unity Church, 407 Broadway, Santa Cruz.

Contributions are preferred to Mattie’s Climb, a scholarship fund being established to give at-risk youth opportunities to join rock-climbing programs, c/o Coast Commercial Bank, account no. 01924028, 720 Front St., Santa Cruz.

Lena J. Adams
Services are Wednesday for Lena J. Adams, who died Sunday in Watsonville. She was 81.
Mrs. Adams was born in Galesburg, Ill., and moved to Santa Cruz in 1964. She lived in Watsonville for 25 years. She served in the women’s Army Corps during World War II.

Mrs. Adams was a licensed vocational nurse at Dominican Hospital for five years. She enjoyed dancing, camping and fishing.

She is survived by her husband, James Adams of Watsonville; daughter, Jeanette Blankenship of Eagle Point, Ore.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

John D. Thiella
Services are Thursday for John D. Thiella, who died Saturday in Santa Cruz. He was 88.

Mr. Thiella was born in Piovene Rochetti, Italy, and lived in San Francisco many years before moving to Scotts Valley in 1975. He worked many years for the Goodman Lumber Co. in San Francisco.

Mr. Thiella was a member of San Agustin Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Council 971. He enjoyed travel and reading.

He is survived by daughter, Barbara Thiella of Stockton; son, John A. Thiella of Point Richmond; sister, Madeline Barrington of Scotts Valley; and several nieces and nephews.

His wife, Edna Florence Dutcher Thiella, died in 1996.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 7 p.m. Thursday at San Agustin Catholic Church, 257 Glenwood Drive, Scotts Valley. Friends may call 5:30 p.m. until the service. A preservice supper is 6 p.m. at the church hall.

Burial is 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Loisann Brichetto McCullagh
Services are today for Loisann Brichetto McCullagh, who died Friday in Santa Cruz. She was 83.

Mrs. McCullagh came to Santa Cruz in 1966. She graduated from Dominican Convent of San Rafael, attended Stanford University and received her teaching credential from Dominican College of San Rafael.

Mrs. McCullagh was a volunteer teacher in public and parochial schools. She was a parish organist and chairman of the Volunteers of Dominican Santa Cruz Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

Mrs. McCullagh was a member of the Y.L.I. and of the Family of Saint Joseph. She enjoyed knitting and needlepoint.

She is survived by sons John B. Filippini of Incline Village, Nev., Samuel B. McCullagh of San Francisco, George P. McCullagh of San Rafael and Stephen B. McCullagh of Santa Rosa; 10 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her first husband, John C. Filippini, and second husband, Samuel B. McCullagh, died before her.

Services are 7:30 p.m. today at St. Joseph, Oblates Mission. A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph’s.

Burial is 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Turlock Memorial Park, 575 N. Soderquist, Turlock.

Contributions are preferred to Shrine of St. Joseph, Oblates Mission or to the Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz County, 6851 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA 95003.

Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel.

Stanley C. Heyse
No services are planned for Stanley C. Heyse, who died Thursday in Santa Cruz. He was 90.

Mr. Heyse was born in Colorado Springs,  Colo., and moved to Santa Cruz five years ago. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked for the East Bay Municipal Utility District in Alameda County.

Mr. Heyse was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by daughters Jane Heyse of Santa Cruz and Christine Heyse of Sacramento; one niece; and six grandchildren.

Contributions are preferred to the Hospice Caring Project of Santa Cruz, 6851 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA 95003.

Arrangements are by Norman’s Family Chapel.

Mary L. Kulich
Services are Wednesday for Mary L. Kulich, who died Friday at her Watsonville home.

Mrs. Kulich was born in Boston, Pa., and lived in Watsonville since 1943. She worked in the circulation department at the Register-Pajaronian for more than 20 years.

Mrs. Kulich was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the YWCA, the Slavic American Cultural Organization and Valley Catholic Church.

She is survived by sons Steve Kulich of Santa Cruz and Tony Kulich of Watsonville; daughter, Terry Lemon of St. Louis, Mo.; sister, Estelle Keefer of Allegheny, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren.

Her husband, Anthony P. Kulich, died in 1978.

Services are 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. Friends may call 5-9 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at Mehl’s.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Valley Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Valley Catholic Cemetery.

Abigail Espinoza
Services are today for Abigail "El Chivero" Espinoza, who died Friday in Monterey of injuries suffered in an auto accident. He was 58.

Mr. Espinoza was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and lived in Watsonville for 30 years where he worked harvesting strawberries. He worked four years at Springfield Farms in Castroville.

Mr. Espinoza attended the Church of Assumption. He was a soccer fanatic and had been in various soccer leagues in Pajaro Valley.

He is survived by wife of 35 years, Teresa Espinoza of Watsonville; sons Raul and Javier Espinoza, both of Marshalltown, Iowa, Adan and Jose Luis Espinoza, both of Watsonville; daughters Leticia Pelayo, Elidia Ortega and Patricia Espinoza, all of Watsonville; brother, Jesus Espinoza of Mexico; sister, Virginia Espinoza of Mexico; and six grandchildren.

Services are 6 p.m. today at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. Friends may call 2-9 p.m. today at Mehl’s.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Assumption in Pajaro. Burial will follow at the Valley Public Cemetery.

Eva F. Dye
Services will be Wednesday for Eva Frances Dye, who died Sunday in Santa Cruz. She was 84.

Mrs. Dye was born in Evansville, Ind., and had lived in Santa Cruz since 1994.

She worked as a nursing aide at St. Bernadine’s Hospital in San Bernardino for 40 years.

She is survived by her sister, Mildred Chaney of Newberg, Ind.; two nieces; a nephew; and two great-nephews.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Santa Cruz Memorial Park Mission Chapel. She will be buried in Mt. View Cemetery in San Bernardino.

Contributions are preferred to your favorite Catholic charity to help children in foreign countries.

Chester ‘Chett’ E. Brock

Services will be held at a later date for Chester "Chett" E. Brock, who died Thursday. He was 68.

Mr. Brock was born in Hartford City, Ind., and moved to Capitola five years ago.

He served during the Korean conflict, where he earned a Bronze Star and other medals.

He was a member of the disabled American Veterans of Santa Cruz. He enjoyed watching sports and loved bowling and deep sea fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle Brock; daughters Sharon Silva of Felton, Jackie  Jackson of Florida and Diana Yates of Indiana; sons Steven Mostek of Santa Cruz and Scott Mostek; and six grandchildren.

Contributions are preferred to Hospice Caring Project, 6851 Soquel Drive, Aptos, CA 95060.

Arrangements are by Santa Cruz Memorial Park.
