Mrs. Johnny R. Burgess

Services will be Saturday for Johnny Ruth Burgess, who died Aug. 11 at a local convalescent hospital. She was 74.

Mrs. Burgess was born in Kingstree, N.C., and lived in Santa Cruz County for 35 years.

She was a member of the Family Faith Christian Center of Watsonville.

She is survived by her son, Wendell Burgess of Watsonville; daughter Jean Jacobs of Oakland; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Memorial Park, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.

Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

This obituary is being rerun to correct a mistake regarding the gender of the deceased.

Ruth C. Bevans
Services will be Monday for Ruth Caroline Difley Bevans, who died Aug. 14 at a local care home. She was 83.

Mrs. Bevans was born in Denver. She had lived in Watsonville since 1951.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, J. Owen Bevans; sons Charles of Simi Valley, Ernest of Salinas, Donald of Camas, Wash., Carl of Downey, Fred of Tampa Bay, Fla., Melvin of San Diego, Sidney of West Richland, Wash., and Thomas Bevans of Strathmore; daughters Jennie Williams of Duarte and Nancy Ramer of Aromas; 39 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

Her oldest son, James O. Bevans Jr., died in 1977.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Prunedale Grange, 17890 Moro Road, Prundale. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel is in charge of cremation arrangements. Her ashes will be taken to Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Bjorn Hansen
Services will be Saturday for Bjorn Hansen, who died in a motorcycle accident Monday in Ben Lomond. He was 34.

Mr. Hansen was born in Sarpsborg, Norway, and ran a tattoo shop in Boulder Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Hansen of Ben Lomond, parents Bjorn Hansen and Karin Bergh of Moss, Norway, two sisters and a brother.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Henfling’s Tavern in Ben Lomond.

Otmar Alberto Valero
Services will be held June 8 for Otmar Alberto Valero, who died from cancer Sunday in Campbell. He was 44.
Mr. Valero was born in San Francisco. He was raised in Campbell and had lived in Santa Cruz for five years.

Mr. Valero graduated from Westmont High School in Campbell in 1976 where he was a varsity football player, a varsity state championship wrestler and a varsity track and field pole-vaulter.

Family members say Mr. Valero worked in carpet installation and construction because it gave him the freedom to adjust his work schedule according to the ocean tide. They say his motto was "Don’t worry about tomorrow."

He is survived by daughter Amber Clark of Klamath Falls, Ore.; parents Bob and Christa Werling of Campbell; brother Alexander Valero of San Jose; sisters Veronica Valero of Novato, Sylvia Davis of Saratoga, Virginia Stockstad of Santa Rosa, and Alycen Creigh of Sumner, Wash.; three nieces; seven nephews; and many aunts and uncles.

Services are at 11 a.m. June 8 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 12770 Saratoga Ave., Saratoga, CA (408) 253-7167.

A surfers memorial will be at 10 a.m. June 9 at Cowell Beach, Santa Cruz. For information, call Bruce Noland of Shoreline Surf Shop at 458-1380.

Duane Everett Mc Common
Services were held for Duane Everett Mc Common, who died May 7 in Mesa, Ariz. He was 81.

Mr. McCommon was born in Colorado. He had lived in Santa Cruz from 1942 to 1955 before moving to Palatine, Ill. He was a member of the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce and of the Santa Cruz Host Lions Club.

He worked at Culligan Soft Water Co. in Northbrook, Ill., and with an executive placement business in Chicago before opening the Mc Common Co. in Chicago.

He enjoyed golfing, fly-fishing and singing in a barbershop quartet and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Palatine.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Catherine Martin Mc Common of Palatine, Ill.; sons Jim Mc Common of Redmond, Wash., and Steven Mc Common of Barrington, Ill.; brother Al Mc Common of Santa Cruz; three grandchildren; three nieces; one nephew; and one aunt.

His sister Stella McLain died in 1992.

Services were held in Prescott, Ariz.

Mick P. Gannon
Services will be held Monday for Mick Gannon, who died Thursday at his Santa Cruz home. He was 65.

Mr. Gannon was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He had worked for the city of Santa Cruz until an accident and diabetes complications forced him to retire.

Mr. Gannon attended San Jose City College where he was the vice president of the student body. He was a jazz and blues fan and aficionado and enjoyed the beach and spending time in the sun. For many years he could be found on the deck behind the Cocoanut Grove.

He is survived by brother Shannon Gannon of Santa Cruz.

His parents Paul and Margaret Gannon, and brother William Tim Gannon, died before him.

Services are at 1 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Church, 126 High St., Santa Cruz. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time at the church.

A private internment will at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Contributions are preferred to the American Diabetes Association, 4040 Moorpark Ave., San Jose, CA 95117.

Arrangements are by Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens.

Raymond Lee Martinez
Services will be private for Raymond Lee Martinez, who died May 22 in a Watsonville convalescent hospital. He was 58.

Mr. Martinez was born in California and had lived in Watsonville many years.

He is survived by brother Loyde F. Martinez of Hesperia.

A private cremation will be at Pajaro Valley Memorial Park.

Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel.

Bernard D. Brandes
Services will be private for Bernard D. Brandes, who died May 11 at his Watsonville home. He was 65.

Mr. Brandes was born in Booneville, Mo. He had lived in the Watsonville area for 10 years. Mr. Brandes served in the U.S. Air Force and was last employed as a cook.

A private cremation will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Davis Memorial Chapel.

Joseph Lino Del Bianco
Services will be Friday for Joseph Lino Del Bianco, who died Thursday while on vacation in Branson, Mo. He was 70.
Mr. Del Bianco was born in Madera, and moved to Santa Cruz at a young age.

He attended Santa Cruz High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked for Pacific Telephone in Santa Cruz for many years before retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Marconi Club and the Santa Cruz Elks Lodge.

He enjoyed working with youth and in local sports activities. He was active in Little Helpers, Mid-County Good Sports, Soquel High School Boosters and Little League. He also enjoyed fishing, cooking and watching his grandsons play baseball.

He is survived by wife MaryKay Del Bianco of Santa Cruz; son Michael Del Bianco of Aptos; daughters Deanie Lindgren of Santa Cruz and Chris Beyers of Watsonville; brothers Frank Del Bianco of Columbus, Ind., and Eugene "Corky" Panelli of Santa Cruz; sister Mary "Lil" Stumpf of Santa Cruz; former wife, Anita "Dolly" Del Bianco of Santa Cruz; five grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

His father, Alessandro Del Bianco, and his mother and stepfather, Assunta and Eugene Panelli, died before him.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel. Burial will be private. Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

John A. Eveland
Private services will be held for John Eveland, who died May 25 at his Santa Cruz home. He was 49.

He was born in Redondo Beach and lived in England during his childhood. He returned to the Redondo Beach area as a teen-ager, and had lived in Santa Cruz County for 25 years.

He attended UC Santa Cruz for three years, and enjoyed backpacking, traveling and working on his car.

He is survived by two cousins.

Benito and Azzaro Pacific Gardens Chapel will be conducting a private burial at sea.
