Charles Lawrence Waggy

Funeral services for Charles Lawrence Waggy, 46, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church. The Rev. Lester Seto will preside. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born July 12, 1951, in Biloxi, Miss., Mr. Waggy died Nov. 18, 1997, at his Vacaville home.

Mr. Waggy was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his parents, Bill and Charlotte of Vacaville; brother and sister-in-law, Hank and Fran of Kiowa,  Colo.; sister and brother-in-law, Mary-Betty and Mark Stevenson of Vacaville; nieces and nephews, Hank, Christopher, Scott, Brittany and Michael of Kiowa,  Colo., and Nicole and Jennifer Stevenson of Vacaville.

Rose Marie Rodler

A memorial service for Rose Marie Rodler, 42, of Vallejo will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home Chapel, 1850 W.  Texas Street. The Rev. Michael Downey of Holy Spirit Catholic Church will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born Jan. 26, 1955, in Vallejo, Mrs. Rodler died Nov. 9, 1997, in Las Vegas after a sudden illness.

She was a bookkeeper for Rocky Mountain Machinery for the past three years. She was a former resident of Fairfield, where she attended school.

She loved art and was fond of animals. She lived in Las Vegas for three years.

Mrs. Rodler is survived by her mother, LaVerna Jean of Fairfield; sisters, Beverly A. Combs of Fairfield and Kathleen E. Baracosa of Vacaville; uncle, Ben D. Marianno of Vacaville; aunt, Barbara L. Ames of Vacaville; special friend, Melanie Ellis of Upland; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Contributions may be made to the Kaiser Permanente Hospice, 975 Sereno Drive, Vallejo 94589.

Herman C. Gustafson

Funeral services for Herman C. Gustafson, 93, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hope Baptist Church in Richmond. Burial will be at Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond.

A Spokane, Wash., resident, Mr. Gustafson died Nov. 16, 1997.

Mr. Gustafson worked for the U.S. Postal Service, along with his work in the ministry. He worked in the Illinois area and also moved to New Mexico working with the postal service and organizing churches where none were available.

In 1943, Mr. Gustafson entered the Army as a chaplain and traveled throughout Europe with Gen. George S. Patton.

He moved his family to the San Pablo area in 1947 and began his ministry locally with the First Baptist Church in San Pablo.

In the early 1950s the congregation moved, and he built the former Judson Memorial Baptist Church, which is now known as Hope Baptist Church in Richmond.

He pastored until his retirement in 1975, but remained active until recently due to failing health.

Mr. Gustafson was a member of the California Farm Bureau Association, Ministers in Missionaries Board, Scandinavian Seamen's Mission in San Francisco, and Retired Military Officers Association.

Also, he was a founding member of the Travis Hospitality House in Fairfield. He organized and supported many religious organizations nationally and worldwide.

Mr. Gustafson is survived by his sons, Donald of Deer Park, Wash., and Herman Gareth of Spokane, Wash.; daughter, Suzanne of Castro Valley; and grandchildren, Joshua and Annaka, both of Santa Barbara.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June "Dolli," in 1982.

Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. today at Wilson & Kratzer Mortuaries, 455 24th St. in Richmond.

Anna Margaret Bernhardt

Funeral services for Anna Margaret Bernhardt, 80, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Monday in Vaca Valley Christian Life Center. The Rev. Tim May of Vaca Valley Christian Life Center will preside. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Aug. 27, 1917, in Denver, Miss Bernhardt died Nov. 19, 1997, at her Vacaville home after a sudden illness.

Miss Bernhardt taught at Vacaville High School for 23 years in the English Department, retiring in 1977. She graduated from San Francisco State University with a master's of arts degree in English. She was known for her determination and ability to live a full life in spite of her physical disability.

A resident of Vacaville for 42 years, she was a member of the Vaca Valley Christian Life Center. She served on the Church Board, Vaca Valley Christian School Board, and taught Sunday School classes for many years.

She will be missed by numerous relatives, friends and students whose lives she touched.

Contributions may be made to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, N.Y., 10023, to the attention of Memorial Dept. 84; or to the Arthritis Foundation Northern California Chapter, 203 Willow St., Suite 201, San Francisco 94109.

Alfred C. Shively

Upon his request, there will be no funeral services for Alfred C. Shively, 77, who died at home after a long illness. Inurnment will be private in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Oct. 20, 1920, in Napa, Mr. Shively moved to Vallejo as a young child, and lived there until 1979 when he moved to Vacaville.

He worked as an engineer in the design section of Mare Island Naval Shipyard and retired in 1976 after 35 years of service.

For many years he performed as double bassist and vocalist with Joe Pallotta's Band. He also served in the Army during World War II.

Downhill skiing, golfing and growing vegetables were the pastimes he enjoyed most. He was a longtime member of the Vallejo Ski Club, B.P.O.E. Vallejo Lodge No. 559, the American Federation of Musicians, SIRS of Vallejo and Green Valley Country Club.

Mr. Shively is survived by his wife, Sylvia of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Dann and Lynda of Sacramento; stepchildren, Lisa Cumming, Ken Cumming of Vacaville, Carolyn and Steve Garcelon of Vacaville, Holly and Greg Nordhues of Vacaville; and grandchildren, Michael and Gillian and Lauren Garcelon.

Contributions may be made to the NorthBay Hospice, 1800  Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield 94533.

Lucille Butts Woolley

Funeral services for Lucille Butts Woolley, 91, of Auburn will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Newton-Bricewell Chico Funeral Home in Chico.

Born June 14, 1906, in Lyonsville, Mrs. Woolley died Nov. 19, 1997.

She was a resident of Auburn since 1939, and was a retired schoolteacher with 34 years of service.

Mrs. Woolley is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Anne Joye and Martin, and Billi Cline and Gordon; sister, Louise Hendrix; sister-in-law, Emma Rose Butts; nieces, Lynette Green and Judy Haynes; nephew, Ed Hendrix; grandchildren, Kenneth Joye, Steven Joye, Michelle Pace, Allyson Joye, Angela Irwin, and Michael Munoz; and great-grandchildren, Ashlin Joye, Kaila Joye, Keean Joye, Robinson Joye, and Maya Joye.

Flowers may be sent to the Newton-Bricewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way, Chico 95926.

Arrangements are by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Marie D. Workman

A Mass of the Resurrection for Marie D. Workman, 76, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vacaville. The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph Catholic Church will preside.

Burial will be private in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery. A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Monday.

Born Sept. 14, 1921, in San Francisco, Mrs. Workman died Nov. 21, 1997, at her Vacaville home. She was a homemaker her adult life, and had graduated from the Presentation Convent in San Francisco.

Mrs. Workman is survived by her husband, Russell of Vacaville; daughters, Debra Wilcoxson and Yvonne, both of San Jose; son, Craig of San Francisco; and sister, Rose Garay of San Francisco.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made to the Kaiser Hospice, 975 Sereno Drive, Vallejo 94590.

Benito A. Tobias Sr.

Funeral services for Benito A. Tobias Sr., 56, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Luciano Valenzuela will preside.

Burial will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. A vigil service will be 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Born March 21, 1941, in the Philippines, Mr. Tobias died of a sudden illness Nov. 16, 1997, while visiting in Manila, Philippines.

He graduated from Marine Engineering school and was an officer in the Merchant Marine in the Philippines.

He worked at the Lucky Stores Distribution Center in Vacaville.

Mr. Tobias had lived in Oakland, and lived in Fairfield for 25 years until his death. He was active in the Filipino/American community in Fairfield. Also, he was an avid fisherman.

Mr. Tobias is survived by his wife, Dr. Virginia Tobias of Fairfield; daughter, Adelle of Fairfield; son, Benito Jr. of Fairfield; mother, Estrella of Houston,  Texas; six brothers and sisters; and many relatives and friends in the United States and the Philippines.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Mary Garcia Lopez

A Catholic Prayer Service for Mary Garcia Lopez, 96, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the McCune Garden Chapel.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Vacaville will preside. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Aug. 22, 1901, in Villacarillo, Spain, Mrs. Lopez died Nov. 21, 1997, at her Vacaville home.

Mrs. Lopez left Spain with her family in 1907, making a 48-day sea voyage around Cape Horn to work in the sugar cane fields in the Hawaiian Islands.

In 1917, her family moved to Vacaville to work in the fruit orchards.

She was employed by Basic Vegetable for 35 years, retiring in 1968 at age 67. She then went to work at the Nut Tree, where she previously worked as a teenager. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of the Basic Vegetable Products Co. Founders Club.

Mrs. Lopez is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Joan of Vacaville; daughters and sons-in-law, Jacoba and Lee Kovisto of Vacaville, and Mary and Bob Dolloff of La Mesa; grandchildren, Karen Lopez-Grant, Joe Lopez III, Janice Lopez-Bera, Bob Dolloff, Jacoba Dolloff, David Dolloff, Matthew Kovisto, and Joel Kovisto; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Barber Joe F. Lopez. He died in 1974.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McCune Garden Chapel.

Hilda Fairbanks De Tar

Funeral services for Hilda Fairbanks De Tar, 99, will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Rockville Cemetery in Suisun.

The Rev. Vic Matson of the Community Unified Methodist Church will officiate.

Mrs. De Tar died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, in Fairfield after a short illness. She was born Feb. 22, 1898, in Simmer and lived in Fairfield for 68 years.

Mrs. De Tar graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1920 with her husband and taught general business in a Fresno high school for two years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, in 1981.

She is survived by her sons, Richard of Sacramento, James of Petropolis, Brazil, and William of Bakersfield; daughter, Margaret McDiarmid of San Jose. She had 13 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
