Richard Thomas Smyth

Memorial services for Richard Thomas Smyth, 46, of Newark will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Fairmont Memorial Park Chapel, 1901 Union Ave. in Fairfield.

The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will officiate. Inurnment will also be at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born April 7, 1951, in the Philippines, he died Nov. 25, 1997, in Fremont after a short illness.

A resident of Newark for the past 17 years, Mr. Smyth served in the U.S. Army for three years.

He was a landscaper for six years and a warehouseman for six years. He loved music and painting and had a keen sense of humor.

He is survived by his mother, Maris of Fairfield; sisters, Mary Anne, Elizabeth and Margaret West, all of Fairfield; and brothers, William of Newark, George of Vallejo and Charles of South San Francisco.

Ana Leal

Private services and inurnment will be held for Ana Leal, 77, of Fairfield.

Born July 26, 1920, in Laredo,  Texas, Mrs. Leal died Dec. 4, 1997, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.

She was a popcorn concession employee at Travis Air Force Base Main Exchange for eight years. She retired in 1984.

Mrs. Leal is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beatrice and Oscar Reyna of Fairfield; sisters, Angela Rodriguez of Corpus Christi,  Texas, and Chelo Edman of Key Largo, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Ella F. Ballard

No local services are planned for Ella F. Ballard, 86, of Vacaville. Burial will be in Bellmont Memorial Park in Fresno.

Born Oct. 12, 1911, in Terrell,  Texas, Mrs. Ballard died Dec. 6, 1997, after a long illness. She lived in Vacaville for three years.

She had been employed by Yolo County for 28 years. She worked in housekeeping and maintenance.

She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons of Yolo County.

Mrs. Ballard is survived by her daughters, Nancy Moore of Vacaville and Joy Erdman of Reno; sister, Birdie of  Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville.

Geraldine Mae Marak

A Catholic Prayer Service for Geraldine Mae Marak, 62, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will preside. Burial will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born Nov. 27, 1935, in Monterey, Mrs. Marak died Dec. 5, 1997, at home after a long illness.

She was a registered nurse for Sierra Solano Healthcare for 15 years. She was a member of the Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Mrs. Marak is survived by her husband, Charles of Fairfield; daughters, Sharon Ricketts and Sandra Nakabayashi, both of Vacaville, Catherine Szydlowski of Albuquerque, N.M., Deborah of Alpine, and Karyn Kirouac of Spring Valley; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Funeral Home in Fairfield. A rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Fairfield Funeral Home.

Madge J. Mendenhall

There will be no public services for Madge J. Mendenhall, 78, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be private in Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born May 3, 1919, in Fairland, Okla., Mrs. Mendenhall died Dec. 3, 1997, after a long illness. She lived in Fairfield for 41 years.

Mrs. Mendenhall was a homemaker, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Gold Box Flower Shop for 15 years. She was a member of the Fairland Baptist Church, where she was baptized in Bee Creek. She attended Solano Community College.

She was active in Little League and Girl Scouts, and was Charter Patron No. 29 with the Travis Air Force Historical Society. She donated small pins and patches to them from her husband's uniform from World War II.

Mrs. Mendenhall is survived by her daughters, Judy Caulfield and Sue Carter, both of Fairfield; sons, Terry of Arbuckle and Jon of Fairfield; sisters, Thelma Bushman of Palo Alto and Marvis Sanders of Exeter; brothers, Rolland England of Phoenix, Ariz., and Calvin England of Patterson; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Josephine L. Miailovich

Graveside services for Josephine L. Miailovich, 90, of Fairfield will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Serbian Cemetery, 1801 Hillside Blvd., in Colma.

The Rev. Pat Coyne of Holy Ghost Fathers will preside.

Born Feb. 2, 1907, in Trinidad,  Colo., Mrs. Miailovich died Dec. 4, 1997, in San Rafael after a long illness.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Glacier Brothers in San Francisco for 22 years.

She is survived by her sons, Charles Lucero of Germany and Arthur Balano of San Anselmo; sister, Margaret Swan of Denver,  Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Fred L. Plahte

Burial with full military honors for Fred L. Plahte, 89, of Vacaville will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. A Masonic Memorial Service at Vaca Hills Chapel will follow.

Born March 21, 1908, in Denver,  Colo., Mr. Plahte died Dec. 3, 1997, at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Plahte was educated in Denver and attended the University of Maryland. He served for 38 years in the Artillery Branch of the Army, advancing through the ranks to full colonel. He served in the Pacific during World War II and in Korea.

His last command was Post Commander of Kaiserslautern, Germany. He retired at Fort Hamilton, N.Y. in May 1963, and lived in Vacaville for 34 years. He like world travel and golf.

He was a member of Vacaville Masonic Lodge No. 134, Scottish Rite Consistory in Memphis, and Ben Ali Shrine in Sacramento.

Mr. Plahte is survived by his wife, Dolores "Bobbie" of Vacaville, who he met in the 43rd Mobile Army Surgical Hospital and married in June 1956. Other survivors are his son, Fred Jr. of Tacoma, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and John Dent of Cape Coral, Fla.; brother and sister-in-law, William and Dorothy of Denver; grandson and wife, John and Mary Dent; great-grandsons, Mike and Doug, both of Alexandria, Va.; nephews, Carl and Warren Magdanz; and niece and nephew, Tom and Marian of Denver.

Contributions may be made to the Shriners' Hospitals for Children in Sacramento.

Robert Lee  Schmidt

No formal services will be held for Robert Lee  Schmidt, 73, of Fairfield. Inurnment will be in Kansas.

Born Feb. 14, 1924, in Abilene, Kan., Mr.  Schmidt died Dec. 3, 1997, in Vallejo after a long illness. He was a resident of Fairfield for 25 years.

Mr.  Schmidt attended Kansas State University, and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He worked for JCPenney department stores for 30 years before retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mr.  Schmidt is survived by his wife, Marvilla of Fairfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Robin of Fairfield, Steven and Betsy of Suisun City, Tracy and Carrie Ann of Fairfield, and Troy and Roberta of Suisun City; twin brother, Jack of Overland Park, Kan.; sisters, Catherine Wagner of Abilene, Kan., and Joyce Sellers of Watauga,  Texas; aunt, Arvilla Parker of Topeka, Kan.; and grandsons, Matthew, Jacob and Joshua.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

C.J. Evans

Memorial services with military honors for C.J. Evans, 81, of Fairfield will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield Funeral Home, 1750  Pennsylvania Ave.

Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Evans died Dec. 6, 1997, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1916, in Milad, Idaho, he moved to Fairfield 37 years ago.

A personnel director at Travis Air Force Base for 30 years, he served as a recruiter during World War II and was a veteran of the Korean War. After serving for the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, he retired as a master sergeant.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Reaka of Fairfield; sons, Robert of Fairfield and Callie of Napa; sisters, Gerri Patten of Idaho, Jean Larson of Idaho; brothers Tom of Idaho and John of  Washington. -00004

Willie L. Taylor

Memorial services for Willie L. Taylor, 69, of Fairfield will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ, 2200 Fairfield Ave., Fairfield.

Elder Linny Partain will officiate. Burial will be private.

Born Oct. 7, 1928, in Marshall,  Texas, Mr.  Taylor died Dec. 6, 1997, in his Fairfield home after a short illness.

Mr.  Taylor moved to Fairfield 25 years ago.

A chief boatswain mate E-7, he served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years from 1947 to 1973.

He attended Solano Community College. After retiring from the military, he began working for the State of California's Department of Transportation in 1973 as toll bridge supervisor at the Benicia-Martinez bridge.

He retired as a sergeant in 1993.

An active member of the Church of Christ in Fairfield for 25 years, Mr.  Taylor loved traveling and working with cars. He was known as an excellent handyman.

He is survived by his wife, Zenobia  Taylor of Fairfield; daughters, Lisa Pugh of Fairfield, Gisele Mills of Salt Lake City; son, Rick  Taylor of Hampton, Va.; mother, Willie Mae  Taylor of Los Angeles; sisters, Evelyn Redding of Los Angeles, Louise Pinkney of Compton; brothers, Huey  Taylor of Fairfield and Nathaniel  Taylor of Marshall,  Texas; six grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Solano Christian Academy, 2200 Fairfield Ave., Fairfield 94533.

Helen Valencia

A memorial Mass for Helen Valencia, 69, of Fairfield will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2700 Dover Ave. in Fairfield.

Father Sebastian Meyer will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Born Jan. 19, 1928, in Indio, Mrs. Valencia died Dec. 6, 1997, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.

A homemaker, Mrs. Valencia moved to Fairfield 35 years ago and was active in many fraternal organizations, including the northern Solano County chapter of the Sons of Italy.

She is survived by her husband, Henry Valencia of Fairfield; daughters, Linda Kirkpatrick of Fairfield, Delores DeBernardi of Illinois, Terry Nelson of Fairfield and Margaret Anderson of Vacaville; son, Anthony Valencia of Fairfield; brother, John Castro of San Francisco; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Henry T. Valencia.

Contributions can be made to St. Vincent DePaul, in care of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 2700 Dover Ave., Fairfield.

Eleanor Louise Wood

Graveside services for Eleanor Louise Wood, 59, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph Church will officiate. Burial will follow the service.

Mrs. Wood died Dec. 8, 1997, in NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born Aug. 10, 1938, in Clear Lake, she moved to the area 21 years ago.

Mrs. Wood, who operated a janitorial service for nine years, is survived by her husband, Calvin Wood of Vacaville; daughter, Anna Sinclair of Vacaville; son, Danny Ceremelli of Medford, Ore.; sisters, Babe Eshom of Bodega Bay and Patricia Bearden of  Texas; brothers, Charles Gregg of New Mexico, Art Gregg of Grass Valley and Kenneth Gregg of Antioch; and grandchildren, Zachary and Brandon Ceremelli, both of Vacaville.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.
