Alvin Steele

Graveside services for Alvin Steele, 91, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Richmond.

The Rev. David Sotelo of Vaca Valley Evangelical Free Church in Vacaville will officiate.

Born Feb. 6, 1906, in Blackwell, Okla., Mr. Steele died Dec. 12, 1997, in Fairfield after a long illness.

He lived in Fairfield for nine years.

He worked as a truck driver for more than 40 years.

Mr. Steele is survived by his daughters, Jana Strotz of Fairfield, Carolyn Sue Wagher of Wichita, Kan., and Laura Charlene Warren of Lovington, N.M.; sisters, Naoma Russo of San Leandro, Opal Shor of  Texas, and Ruth Richmand of  Oklahoma; sons, Verle Steele of Wichita and Berwyn Steele of Wichita; 29 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Jacqueline J. Zappetta

A Mass of Christian Burial for Jacqueline J. Zappetta, 73, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly will preside. Burial will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Feb. 19, 1924, in Independence, Mo., Mrs. Zappetta died Dec. 11, 1997, at Kaiser Medical Center in Vallejo after a long illness.

She was a homemaker for several years, and had moved to the area 22 years ago.

She was a member of the Vacaville Senior Center and the Vacaville Doll Club. She was an avid collector and maker of dolls.

Mrs. Zappetta is survived by her sons, Giovanni Eugene, Anthony Michael and Thomas Richard, all of Vacaville, Vincent Montecello of Palmdale, James Harry-Nelson of Dixon, and David Nicholas of San Jose; sister, Maefan Yoakum of Liberty, Mo.; grandchildren, Rebecca Roxanne, Jackie Noreen, Monique Marie, and Erica LeAnn Marie, all of Vacaville, Brian of Panorama City, and Lee and Nichole, both of San Jose, Michele of Bullhead, Ariz., and Adam of Michigan.

Contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Church, 1781 Marshall Road, Vacaville 95687.

F. Douglas Johnson

Funeral services for F. Douglas Johnson, 39, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church, Vacaville.

The Rev. Leroy Gainey of the church will officiate. Burial will follow.

Born Jan. 21, 1958, in Los Angeles, he died Dec. 10, 1997, in Vacaville, after a heart attack while coaching on a basketball court at the Vacaville Christian Academy.

Mr.  Johnson lived in Vacaville six years and was a self-employed plumbing contractor for 20 years.

He was active with youth athletics and a coach of soccer and basketball teams in Vacaville.

Mr.  Johnson is survived by his wife, Monica Currie-Johnson, M.D.; daughter, Jessica, and son, Christopher, both of Vacaville; father, Frederick  Johnson of Pasadena; mother, Antoninette Carter of Los Angeles; and mother-in-law, Millie Currier of Southfield, Mich.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in McCune Garden Chapel, Vacaville.

A memorial contribution can be made to the donor's choice.

Arturo B. Barbadillo

Funeral services for Arturo B. Barbadillo, 52, of Suisun will be 10 a.m. Friday in Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Rev. Luciano Valenzuela will officiate. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born Feb. 15, 1945, in the Philippines, Mr. Barbadillo died Dec. 13, 1997, in Fairfield after a long illness.

Mr. Barbadillo lived in Suisun for 10 years. He was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and held the rank of master sergeant. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Oakland for four years.

He loved to travel, had a good sense of humor and always wore a smile.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, with a rosary at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Mr. Barbadillo is survived by his wife, Susana of Suisun; daughter, Leilani of Suisun; sons, Roy of Hawaii and Allan of Soledad; sister, Amelia Rosario of San Jose; brothers, Virgilio of Pittsburg and Pedro of Oakley; mother, Luisa of San Jose; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made the American Cancer Society, 1312 Maryland St., Fairfield 94533.

George Carli

A memorial service in early January is planned for George Michel Carli, 62, of Vacaville.

Born June 21, 1935, in San Francisco, Mr. Carli died Dec. 12, 1997, in Vacaville after a sudden illness.

A Vacaville resident for eight years, Mr. Carli worked for CalFarm Insurance in Marin County for 30 years.

He was a 23-year member of the Marin County Farm Bureau and a member of the 49ers Booster Club of Marin County.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Sam of Vacaville; daughters, Christine Bergstedt of Petaluma and Darlene Easson of Oxford, Miss.; sons, Matthew of Santa Rosa and Michel of Fresno; brothers, John of San Jose and Peter of Belmont; sisters, CloAnn DiGrazia of Novato and Gail Manso of San Francisco; nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark, earlier this year.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa 95402, or a charity of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.

Vera S. Hayes

Funeral services for Fairfield native Vera S. Hayes, 92, were held Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. Stan Sanderson officiated.

Visitation preceded the services, and burial was in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born March 27, 1905, in Fairfield, Mrs. Hayes worked for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District during the 1950s and 1960s. She was a housewife for more than 70 years.

She loved to garden and was a wonderful housekeeper.

She is survived by her son, Norman Hague of Vacaville; daughter, Evelyn Regan-Kirchmayer of Rio Vista; nephew, Elmer-Swede Lorenzen of Fairfield; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

John Markiewitz

A Catholic Prayer Service for John Markiewitz, 74, a life-long resident of Vacaville, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday in McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reily of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Sept. 27, 1923, in Vacaville, he died in Vacaville Dec. 13, 1997, after a brief illness.

He worked 40 years as a sheet metal worker and was a walnut rancher, selling walnuts worldwide since 1967.

He was a member of Local 104 of the Sheet Metal Workers Union.

Mr. Markiewitz is survived by his wife, Millie; stepson and daughter-in-law, Larry and Catherine Willard of San Diego; brothers, Paul of Vacaville and Martin of Ukiah; and sisters, Jane Staniewicz and Frances Stinnett, both of Vacaville.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Northern California, P.O. Box 1824, Sacramento 95812, or a favorite charity.

Conrad Ruiz

Funeral services for Conrad Ruiz, 72, of Dixon will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 105 S. Second St., Dixon.

Father Maurice O'Brien will officiate. Burial will follow at Silveyville Cemetery.

Mr. Ruiz died Dec. 14, 1997, after a short illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1925, in Watts, he moved to Dixon 46 years ago. He spent 35 years in the farming business. Mr. Ruiz enjoyed eating, playing golf and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Ofelia of Dixon; daughters, Lisa, Susanna Adema and Ofelia Marez, all of Dixon; son, Conrad Jr. of Dixon; brothers, Joe of Dixon, Daniel of San Diego, Jess of Wyoming and Frank of Dixon; sister, Gloria Monroy of Dixon; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home, 569 N. First St., Dixon.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Robert Marion Finlay

Funeral services for Robert Marion Finlay, 77, of Davis will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Athens-Silveyville Masonic Lodge, 1655 DaVinci Court in Davis. Burial will follow at the Davis Cemetery.

Born April 2, 1920, on the New Caladonia Farm in Broderick, Mr. Finlay died Dec. 15, 1997, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento.

Raised in Davis, Mr. Finlay graduated from Davis High School in 1939. He served in the Army from 1940 to 1945 and was in the Normandy Invasion. After his discharge he remained active with the reserves and served in Korea in 1950.

In 1946, he married Catherine McArthur of Los Angeles. He worked on the Broadmead Farm in Amity, Ore., as the shepherd from 1946 to 1949.

After the Korean Conflict, Mr. Finlay went to work for the University of California, Davis, where he also worked as a shepherd. He retired in 1980 after 36 years.

He was a life member of the VFW of Davis, California Wool Growers Association, American Legion Post 208 of Dixon, and was a 50-year-member of the Athens-Silveyville Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite of Salem, Ore., and the Order of the Eastern Star of Amity, Ore.

He enjoyed traveling.

Mr. Finlay is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Anna, Alex and Gina of Dixon; grandson, Danny of Dixon; stepgrandchildren, Mary and Robyn Arguello, both of Dixon; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dick Lewis of Davis; uncles and aunt, Bud King of Davis, Lonnie and Jimmy King and Jo Reiman, all of Phoenix, Ariz.

Contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Sacramento.

Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Chapel in Davis.

Louis John Gavazza

A Catholic Prayer of Service with full military honors for Louis John Gavazza, 68, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will preside. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born June 4, 1929, in San Francisco, Mr. Gavazza died Dec. 12, 1997, at his home in Fairfield after a brief illness. He lived in Fairfield for 31 years.

Mr. Gavazza graduated from Galileo High School in San Francisco and from the University of California, Berkeley, with a bachelor of arts degree in finance.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1971 as a pilot with the 916 Air Refueling Squadron. He retired as a major in 1971 at Travis Air Force Base. He later worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard from 1979 to 1994 as a nuclear pipefitter.

His hobbies included gardening and coin and stamp collecting. He was a member of the National Geographic Society and the 49ers Booster Club.

Mr. Gavazza is survived by his wife, Shirley of Fairfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Gerri and John Severdia of Fairfield, Teresa and Ron Milone of San Diego, and Lisa and Larry Glenn of Moccassin; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey of Anchorage, Alaska, Louis Jr. and Terry of Windsor, and Joseph and Francis, both of Fairfield; brother-in-law, Dino Del Grosso of San Francisco; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
