Lela E. Freitas

Funeral services for Lela E. Freitas, 91, of Woodland will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fairmont Memorial Park in Fairfield. The Revs. Floyd Mauldin and Stan Caylor will officiate.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m., and burial will be in Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born June 17, 1906, in Arbuckle, Mrs. Freitas died Dec. 19, 1997, in Alderson Convalescent Hospital in Woodland after a long illness. She had lived in Solano County for 26 years before moving to Woodland five years ago.

Mrs. Freitas worked as a registered nurse in Fairfield for 40 years. She was known as a caring nurse and wife, mother and grandmother. She was a past member of the Fireman's Association and Fairfield Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Donna of Woodland; brother, Walter V. Gillespie of Cave Junction, Ore.; grandchildren, Richard and Lori Freitas of Longmont,  Colo., Melody and Dan Malmgren of Phoenix, and Susan and Sean Moylan of Woodland; and great-grandchildren, Calvin, Jesse and Isacc Moylan of Longmont,  Colo., and Rhea Anne and Melinda Malmgren of Phoenix.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Joseph; son, Bill; brother, Hank Gillespie; and sisters, Marge Foley, Dorothy Bell and Thelma Morrow.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Redwood Empire Chapter, 744 Empire St., Suite 112, Fairfield 94533; or the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Cot-E Michael Raymond Herrin

Funeral services for Cot-E Michael Raymond Herrin, 5 weeks old, of Vacaville will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McCune Garden Chapel. The Rev. John Fedota of Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield will officiate.

Burial will be private.

Born Nov. 9, 1997, the baby died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, after a sudden illness.

He is survived by his parents, Ricky and Kimberly of Vacaville; brother, Ric-E of Vacaville; maternal grandparents, Mike and Marion Woodside of Vacaville; paternal grandparents, Brenda and Ron of Sacramento; and great-grandparents, Crystal and Raymond Wright of Florida.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel.

Marilyn 'Lynn' LaRussa

Private services are planned for former Vacaville resident Marilyn "Lynn" LaRussa, 50, of Wickenburg, Ariz.

Born Jan. 3, 1947, in Berkeley, Mrs. LaRussa died Dec. 20, 1997, in Wickenburg.

She was manager and president of BCS Communications of Vacaville for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Bob of Congress, Ariz.; parents, Frank and Anne Bell of Vacaville; sister, Sharon Geier of Livermore; niece, Amanda Stockdale of Boise, Idaho; nephews, Vance Geier of Vacaville and Troy Geier of Livermore; and numerous other relatives.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85014-5699.

Arrangements are under the direction of Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Wickenberg.

James A. Meyers

Services are pending for James A. Meyers, 61, of Benicia.

Born May 3, 1936, Mr. Meyers died Dec. 20, 1997, at his home after a long illness. He had been a resident of Benicia for 52 years.

He served in the Air Force from 1957 to 1961, and worked as a machine operator at C&H Sugar in Crockett for more than 30 years before retiring in 1992.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Beverly of Vacaville and Ronald and Sandy of Vacaville; brothers, Donald of Benicia and Charles of Kauai, Hawaii; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Richard Fritz of Fairfield; sister, Barbara Madison of Manteca; and friend, Jay Garibaldi of Benicia.

Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Passalacqua Funeral Chapel in Benicia.

Yolande Juliette Phelps

A Mass of Christian Burial for Yolande Juliette Phelps, 74, of Vacaville will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly will officiate.

Rosary and visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Vaca Hills Chapel, and burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Phelps died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997.

Born Sept. 12, 1923, in Peking (now Beijing), China, she was the daughter of Ferdinand and Madeline Millereau. She married Roy Phelps on May 1, 1948. They lived in France, China, Germany,  South Carolina and Montana during his career in the Army, and spent 26 years in Helena, Mont., during his career with the state auditor's office. They moved to Vacaville in 1989, and her husband preceded her in death in 1990.

Mrs. Phelps' children and grandchildren were the center of her life, and she enjoyed gourmet cooking, sewing and painting for her family and friends. She was an avid reader who enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Anna-Marie and David Brandt of  Texas and Suzanne and Perry Swenson of  Texas; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Ann Phelps of Vacaville and Joseph and Julie Phelps of  Texas; grandchildren, Amanda and Kevin Swenson and Justin Phelps of  Texas and Thomas Phelps of Vacaville; three sisters and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her close friend, Harry Leach of Vacaville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ilah Claverie

A private inurnment is planned for Ilah Claverie, 85, of Vacaville.

Born Feb. 28, 1912, in Beaverton, Ore., she died Dec. 17, 1997, at VacaValley Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Claverie had lived in Vacaville for four years. She was an elevator starter for Commercial Building Maintenance Company for 35 years before retiring in 1977.

She is survived by her daughters, Heather Patton of Vacaville and Vicki Schoephoerster of Redwood City.

Contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Skywood Memorial Lawn in Vallejo.

Richard Charles Lierly

Funeral services for Richard Charles Lierly, 72, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday at Vaca Valley Christian Life Center.

Pastor Dave Crone will officiate. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Nov. 17, 1925, in Basco, Ill., Mr. Lierly died at his Vacaville home on Dec. 22, 1997, after a long illness.

He was a chemical operator for Chevron for 32 years and served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Vaca Valley Christian Life Center and enjoyed traveling in his recreational vehicle around the country.

Mr. Lierly is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Vacaville; daughters, Yolanda Guthrie of Elk Grove and Yovonda Knight of Manteca; son, Richard Jr. of Martinez; brother, Emmett of San Jose; and grandchildren, Kayronna Hoskins of Antioch, Aaron Knight of Manteca, Rochelle Nalley of Sacramento, Ryan Fraga of Redding, Richard Fraga of Elk Grove, and Lauren, Megan and Nicole all of Martinez.

He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.

Ruth J. Puckett

Graveside services for Ruth J. Puckett, 76, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Friday at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery. The Rev. Vic Matson will preside.

Born Aug. 1, 1921, in Visalia, Mrs. Puckett died Dec. 22, 1997, in Fairfield after a short illness. She lived in the area 18 years.

Mrs. Puckett was a registered nurse for Children's Hospital in San Francisco for three years. She loved the outdoors, and enjoyed fishing and hunting with her husband.

Mrs. Puckett is survived by her husband, James of Fairfield; sons, Robert of Santa Rosa, and Steven of Fairfield; brother, Richard Erwin of Virginia; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Gwendolyn Sinclair Broe

Private services have been held for Gwendolyn Sinclair Broe, 79, of Vacaville.

The Rev. Tom Smith of Community Presbyterian Church officiated. Burial was in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Sept. 4, 1918, in Canada, Mrs. Broe died Dec. 17, 1997, in Vacaville after a sudden illness. She had lived in Vacaville for six years.

She was a corporal in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and dedicated the remainder of her life to her family. She loved golf, reading, camping and traveling, as well as domestic pursuits.

She is survived by her husband, Howard of Vacaville; sons, Allan of Canada, James of Vacaville and Lawrence of Denver; brothers, Douglas, Max and Selby Taylor, all of Canada; sister, Olga Burke of Tacoma, Wash.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements were under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel.

Kedra Eunice Harper

A memorial service for Kedra Eunice Harper, 26, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

The Rev. Otis Harper will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born April 3, 1971, in Redwood City, Ms. Harper died Dec. 20, 1997, in Sacramento after a short illness.

She graduated from Armijo High School in 1989, and from the Western Career College in 1993.

She was a medical assistant for Fairfield Medical Group for six months. She loved music and dancing and helping children.

Ms. Harper is survived by her parents, Otis and Deborah of Fairfield; fiance, Stacy Carlton Sr. of Sacramento; daughters, Demetria Brown and Keeara Brown, both of Sacramento; sons, Steven Brown Jr. and Stacy Carlton Jr., both of Sacramento; sister, Camille of Davis; and brother, Edwin of Bay Point.

Dorothy McCadden Horler

Former Vacaville resident Dorothy McCadden Horler, 80, of Greenbrae died Dec. 20, 1997, at Marin General Hospital.

No formal services are scheduled.

Born June 16, 1917, in Idaho, Mrs. Horler spent her childhood in Vacaville and graduated from Vacaville High School in 1934. She is a 1938 graduate of Chico State College.

Mrs. Horler taught elementary school for 36 years. She retired in 1974 after 26 years at Neil Cummins School in Corte Madera.

Mrs. Horler is survived by her husband, Laurence; sister, Emily Cudaback of Napa; sister-in-law, Frances of Rohnert Park; a niece; and two nephews.

Contributions may be made to Hospice of Marin, 150 Nellen Ave., Corte Madera 94925.

Arrangements are by Russell and Gooch Funeral Chapel in Mill Valley.

Henry Watson Smith

Funeral services for Henry Watson Smith, 66, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A funeral procession with full military honors to Travis Air Force Base Chapel Center will follow.

Private burial will be at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. The Revs. Joseph B. Davis of Saint Stephens C.M.E., and Nathaniel Foster of Baptist Church will preside.

Born April 16, 1931, in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Mr. Smith died Dec. 18, 1997, in Lodi after a long illness. He was a resident of Fairfield for 29 years.

Mr. Smith served in the Air Force for 19 years. He retired from the Air Force as an employment manager. He also worked for the Postal Service, and he was the owner of Smith Hauling.

Mr. Smith was the salutatorian of his class, attended college in San Francisco and was an avid reader and inventor. He had a strong belief in Jehovah God.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Simmons-Sheldon Post 2333 in Suisun City.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Fairfield; daughters, Sheila Hodges and Angela Lindsey, both of Sacramento, Carol of Lodi, and Lorothea of El Cajon; sons, Henry of Silver Springs, Md., Kenneth of Bamberg, Germany, and Keith of Fairfield; sister, Louise Turner of Nashville, Tenn.; 22 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
