Elzie Leroy Allen

Visitation for Mr. Elzie Leroy Allen, 82, of Fairfield will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Community United Methodist Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Vic Matson will officiate. Interment will be in the Suisun/Fairfield Cemetery.

Born May 7, 1916, in Valdosta, Ga., Mr. Allen died Jan. 7, 1998, in the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base after a long illness.

Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years, retiring as a senior master sergeant. He served as a ball-turret gunner on a B-17 during World War II. After the Air Force, he worked for the Fairfield/Suisun Unified School District for 10 years.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, F&AM 55 in Fairfield. He also was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his daughter, Paula Marden of San Diego; son, Paul Allen of Fairfield; sister, Louise Wells of Miami; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Elsa K. Berendsen

Funeral services for Elsa K. Berendsen, 96, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Monday at McCune Garden Chapel.

The Rev. Stephen Leonetti of Epiphany Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Jan. 4, 1902, in Germany, Mrs. Berendsen died Jan. 5, 1998, in Vacaville after a brief illness. She came to the United States from Germany in 1921 and was active in civic and social clubs. She had lived in Vacaville for 27 years.

Mrs. Berendsen was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, in 1971.

Memorial contributions may made to the donor's favorite charity.

Juliana Mislang Ferrer

Visitation for Juliana Mislang Ferrer, 65, of Suisun City will be 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

A rosary will be 5:30 p.m. in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Fairfield. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate.

Interment will be in the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery in Fairfield.

Born Feb. 6, 1932, in the Philippines, Mrs. Ferrer died Jan. 9, 1998, in Fairfield after a long illness.

Mrs. Ferrer was a homemaker for 47 years. She loved to travel and cook and was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Catalino Ferrer of Suisun City; daughters, Jennick Ayran of Milpitas, Joceylin F. Estolas of Suisun City and Rowena F. Antivo of Milpitas; sons, Catalino Ferrer Jr. of Milpitas, Conrado Ferrer of Suisun City, Ruben Ferrer of Suisun City and Ferdinand Ferrer of Suisun City; 10 sisters and a brother, all of the Philippines; and nine grandchildren.

Virginia L. Sparrowe

A memorial service for Virginia L. Sparrowe, 103, of Vacaville will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.

Born Dec. 16, 1894, in San Francisco's's Mission District, she died Jan. 9, 1998.

She spent her childhood in California's small mining camps and towns. Her father was a mining engineer and assayer. The family also lived in the Black Hills of South Dakota and in Iowa. They moved to Berkeley in time to witness the 1906 earthquake.

Ms. Sparrowe graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Pharmacy in 1918. She was one of only three women in her class and one of a few female pharmacists in the state.

She married Berkeley businessman Thomas Sparrowe on May 29, 1920. The couple owned and operated the Frazier-Sparrowe Pharmacy in Berkeley from 1934-1946. She later worked part time in local pharmacies until the age of 80.

After retiring, she traveled with her husband until his death in 1962, then with her cousin until she was in her 80s. She rode a camel around an Egyptian pyramid when she was 84.

She was a charter member of the Berkeley Chapter of Zonta International, a service club for business women. She was active in the club for more than 50 years.

She is survived by her son, Delmer Sparrowe of Sonoma; daughters, Kathryn Welter of Vacaville, Virginia Hale of Berkeley Heights, N.J., and Adela Hidde of El Cajon; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Thomas L. Holzer

A Catholic prayer service for Thomas L. Holzer, 85, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Vaca Hills Chapel in Vacaville.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate.

Burial will be in the Vacaville Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Holzer was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Sacramento and died Jan. 9, 1998, in Winsor House Convalescent Hospital after a long illness.

He moved to Vacaville at age 9.

He was a partner in a road construction company in Visalia and co-owner of Sam's 519 Club in Vacaville for 19 years. He retired from the Nut Tree in 1974.

Mr. Holzer served in the Army and served three years in World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lydia of Vacaville; daughter, Linda Tanforan of Elverta; granddaughter, Jennifer Kuykendall of Taylor, Mich.; grandson, Christopher Tanforan of Santa Cruz.

Visitation for Mr. Holzer will be 6 to 8 a.m. Monday at Vaca Hills Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, William Black Medical Research Building, Columbian Presbyterian Medical Center, 710 West 168th St., New York, N.Y. 10032-2699, or to the donor's favorite charity.

Andres Santamaria

Funeral services for Andres Santamaria, 89, of Vacaville, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Burial will be in the Vacaville Elmira Cemetery.

Born Nov. 30, 1908, in Bilbao, Spain, Mr. Santamaria died Jan. 8, 1998, in Winsor House Convalescent Hospital in Vacaville.

He fought in the Spanish Civil War at a young age. He later became a professional boxer, which took him to the United States. He became a merchant seaman and served on liberty ships during World War II. He retired in 1970 after 25 years with the United States Lines.

He was a member of the National Maritime Union for 48 years. Mr. Santamaria belonged to the Centro Vasco Americano (Basque Cultural Club) in New York, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Rode of Vacaville; daughter, Rhoda of New York City; son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Diane of Vacaville; grandchildren, Melissa, Robert and Andy III, all of Vacaville.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 330 Distel Circle, Suite A, Los Altos 94022.

Larry Breed

Larry Breed, 67, of Vacaville died Dec. 29, 1997 in Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo after a long illness.

No formal services are planned. Cremation will be private in Contra Costa County.

Born Jan. 15, 1930, in Fayetteville, Ark., he lived in Vacaville 25 years and was a retired technical sergeant in the Air Force. He also operated a disc jockey business, playing music for weddings and private parties.

He had been a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Elks Lodge, both in Vacaville.

Mr. Breed is survived by sons, Dwayne, David and Garry of Vacaville; mother, LaRue Rushakoff of Healdsburg; and granddaughter, Brittany of Vacaville.

Arrangements were handled by the Neptune Society.

Rose Bishop

Funeral services for Rose Bishop, 84, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Vaca Hills Chapel. Chaplain Keith Knauf will officiate. Mrs. Bishop will be inurned in the Winters Cemetery District.

She died Dec. 30, 1997 at the Vacaville Convlescent and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness. She was born Oct. 19, 1913 in Marshall County, Okla. She moved to California 67 years ago.

Mrs. Bishop worked as a floor supervisor for Basic Vegetable Company and was a member of the Neighbors of Woodcraft and the Founders Club. She also enjoyed cooking.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Virginia and Sid Welch of Vacaville and Geraldine and Don Warren of Esparto; daughters Margie Cuellar of Lewisville,  Texas and Dorothy Sorensen of Dixon; sister Marie Craft of  Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Joan Christine Cady

A private inurnment will be held for Joan Christine Cady, 59, of Fairfield.

Born Oct. 23, 1938, in Colusa, Mrs. Cady died Dec. 17, 1997, in Vallejo Hospital after a brief illness.

She lived in Fairfield for the past 10 years.

Mrs. Cady is survived by her husband, Patrick of Fairfield; daughters, Barbara Baxley and her husband Don of Vallejo, Chris Clifton and her husband Ken of Kingman, Ariz., Karen Derenzi of Fairfield, Francine Welsh and her husband Dale of Fairfield and Shanon Bowman of Fairfield; sisters, Charlene May of Los Angeles and Carol Cookie Malito of Vallejo.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1652  Texas St., Fairfield.

Bic Van Nguyen

Funeral services for Bic Van Nguyen, 62, of Fairfield will be noon Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Rev. Michael Downey will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born Aug. 29, 1935, in Vietnam, Mr. Nguyen died Dec. 28, 1997, after a short illness. He lived in Fairfield for seven years.

Mr. Nguyen was a translator for the U.S. Army while in Vietnam in the 1960s. He worked as a Government Air Traffic Controller for 20 years, and was an operations supervisor with Flying Tiger Air Lines for 10 years.

He was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, and was a leader in the Vietnamese Community in the Bay Area.

Mr. Nguyen is survived by his wife, Kim K. of Fairfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Raymond McKune of Fairfield, Mai and Michael Morrison of  Washington state, Nga and Nick Boncato of Fairfield, and Oanh of San Francisco; sons, Bach and Ut, both of Fairfield, Toan of Suisun City; sons and daughters-in-law, Bach Jr. and Kathleen of Vacaville, and Michael and Lovylyn of Fairfield; brother, Toan of Los Angeles; and 15 grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Orville R. Prindle

At his request, no formal services will be held for Orville R. Prindle, 72 of Vacaville.

Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Prindle died Dec. 27, 1997 in his Vacaville home.

Born Dec. 26, 1925, in Fort Worth,  Texas, he moved to the area 12 years ago. He served 21 years in the U.S. Air Force and worked in newspaper distribution for The Reporter for six years.

Mr. Prindle is survived by his daughter, Sharon Gentile of Bedford, Mass.; sister, Eudora Bryant of Fort Worth and grandchildren, Nicholas Gentile of Bedford and Michael and Laura Prindle, both of Panama City, Fla.
