Dr. Kent Pierce Jackson
A memorial Mass for Dr. Kent Pierce Jackson, 65, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Church, 1050 North Texas St., Fairfield.
A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fairfield Funeral Home, 1750 Pennsylvania Ave.
Born April 4, 1932, in Independence, Kan., Dr. Jackson died Jan. 10, 1998, after a short illness. He lived in Solano County for 39 years.
The son of Thelma Pierce Jackson and Kent Jackson, Dr. Jackson graduated from Independence High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietem. In 1954, Dr. Jackson enrolled in the University of California School of Optometry in Berkeley, from which he graduated in 1959. Later that year, he established his optometry practice in Solano County.
Dr. Jackson distinguished himself as a caring and thorough provider of eye care. In the city of Rio Vista, he served in numerous civic, government and business organizations and forums. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club and was president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.
He was an active member in the Catholic church in Rio Vista, where he helped renovate the church building and grounds and strengthen the parish community. Dr. Jackson was appointed justice court judge in Rio Vista in 1969.
Dr. Jackson relocated his optometry practice to Fairfield in 1984 and continued as an active member of the community. In recent years, working in conjunction with the city of Fairfield, he was instrumental in the renovation of a number of neighborhoods.
The city recently recognized his work, establishing the Kent P. Jackson award for outstanding contribution to the Fairfield Revitalization Program. It will be presented annually to the individual or group that typifies Dr. Jackson's willingness to take risks and lead others in raising community standards.
He is survived by his wife, Grace of Fairfield; sister, Barbara; children, Cosette, Bobette, Robert and Kevin; six grandchildren; three stepchildren, Mark, Wayne and Andrew; and five step-grandchildren.

Charles W. Menzies
A memorial service for Charles W. Menzies, 89, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Vaca Hills Chapel.
Members of Vacaville Lodge No. 134, F&AM will officiate. Interment will be private.
Born May 16, 1908, in San Francisco, Mr. Menzies died Jan. 10, 1998, in Sacramento after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Menzies was a letter carrier in San Francisco for more than 30 years before retiring. He later worked for the Red Cross in San Rafael for eight years and for the city of Corte Madera for one year. After moving to Leisure Town in Vacaville, he drove the train at the Nut Tree for 12 years, a job he truly loved.
Mr. Menzies was a member of the Star King Masonic Lodge in San Francisco, the Guadeloupe Lodge and a lifetime member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Mr. Menzies is survived by his son, Richard of Pleasant Hill; daughter, Susan of Sacramento; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie.

Francisco R. Ravara
A Mass of Christian Burial for Francisco R. Ravara, 80, of Fairfield will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Fairfield.
The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.
Mr. Ravara died last week at the Fairfield Healthcare Center after a brief bout with cancer.
Born Dec. 25, 1917, in Alaminos, Pangasinan, Philippines, he moved to Fairfield one year ago. He served in the Philippine Commonwealth Army for the U.S. Armed Forces from 1941 to 1946.
Mr. Ravara also worked as a production line worker for A.B.S. Cannery in Alaska, from which he retired in the mid-1980s.
He is survived by his wife, Asteria of Fairfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Adelaida and Angelito Llave of Kodiak, Alaska, Ising and Romeo Del Puerto of Suisun, and Lorna and Tito Bangal of Fairfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Rolando and Glory of Fairfield and Froilan and Josefina of Fairfield.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W. Texas St., Fairfield. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, also at Bryan-Braker.
Rose M. Ward
Funeral services for Rose M. Ward, 82, of Fairfield will be at noon Wednesday at Fairmont Memorial Park Chapel, 1901 Union Ave., Fairfield.
The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Burial will be in Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Ward died Jan. 9, 1998, in Fairfield after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 4, 1915, in Lawrence, Mass., she was a homemaker for 65 years and loved to travel and garden.
She is survived by her son, Manuel and daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Costa of Los Banos; son, Edward and daughter-in-law, Barbara Costa of Hanford; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Shirley Lavon Ellis
Graveside services for Shirley Lavon Ellis, 62, of Fairfield will be 3:30 p.m. Friday in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Inurnment will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis died Jan. 11, 1998, at Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo after a long illness.
Born April 1, 1935, in California, she lived in Fairfield for one year. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Ellis enjoyed cooking, crafts, quilting and sewing.
Mrs. Ellis is survived by her husband, John of Fairfield; daughters, Sharon Dieson of Suisun and Debbie Dunham of Vacaville; sons, Craig Hightman, John, and Donald, all of Vacaville, and Allan of Suisun; father, Andrew Rossi of Chico; sisters, Dolores Jackman and Barbara Ross, both of Chico; and nine grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Chapels, Vallejo.
Carolyn Hall
Funeral services for Carolyn Hall, 51, of Vacaville will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McCune Garden Chapel. Inurnment will be private at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Born May 8, 1946, in Hanford, Mrs. Hall died Jan. 9, 1998, in Chico after a sudden illness.
A Vacaville resident since 1961, Mrs. Hall worked for Solano County for the last 10 years.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Jack; children, Denise Farmer of Napa, Andrew Hall of Las Vegas, Nev., Dominic Gomez of Phoenix, Ariz., and Debbie Binkley of Carmichael; sisters, Jeannie Riley of Fresno and Pearl Riggen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Troy Johnson of Madera; grandchildren, Monique, Amanda and Andrea of Las Vegas, and Austin of Napa; and mother, Ruth Duren.
Visitation will be at the McCune Garden Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
Darrell D. Henderson
Memorial services for Darrell D. Henderson, 56, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Mr. Henderson died Jan. 12, 1998, in Fairfield of a long illness.
Born Feb. 1, 1941, in Oil Hill, Kan., he lived in Fairfield 25 years. He retired as a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force after 21 years. He served as a aircraft maintenance technician/superintendent. During his career he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Good Conduct Medal, with five bronze loops. He was also awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four oak leaf clusters and Republic of Vietnam campaign medals. His last duty assignment was 60th OMS, Travis Air Force Base. After retiring he worked for 12 years with the Fairfield Fire Department as an engineer.
Mr. Henderson enjoyed collecting World War II memorabilia.
Mr. Henderson is survived by his wife, Maria D. of Fairfield; sisters, Helen Hendricks of Potwin, Kan., and Edna Moody of Augusta, Kan.; half-sisters, Margaret Foster of Wichita, Kan., and Betty Jo Pierce of Conway Springs, Kan.; brothers, Vernon of Apple Valley, Minn., and Dwayne of Potwin; and half-brother, Carl of Oberlin, Kan. She was predeceased by a son, Reinhard.

Genevieve Newton
A Catholic Prayer Service for Genevieve Newton, 80, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Friday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
The Rev. Michael Downey of Holy Spirit Catholic Church will officiate. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park.
Mrs. Newton died Sunday, Jan. 11, at Fairfield Health Care.
Born July 26, 1917, in Carbonear, Newfoundland, Canada, she moved to Fairfield 36 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Women of the Moose No. 1379 and Ladies of the Elks No. 1976.
Mrs. Newton is survived by her husband, William of Fairfield; sisters, Bride Chancey of St. Johns, Newfoundland, and Eileen Southwell of Carbonear; brother, James P. O'Leary of Montreal, Canada.
Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Thursday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

William 'Bill' C. Ahrens
A memorial service for William "Bill" C. Ahrens, 84, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Solano Yacht Club, 703 Civic Center Blvd., Suisun.
Mr. Ahrens died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at David Grant Medical Center after a short illness.
Born Dec. 29, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., he moved to Fairfield 33 years ago. He served in the United States Air Force from 1933 to 1965, retiring as a lieutenant colonel after 32 years. He then worked for the State of California, Veterans Affairs for 11 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, Shriner's Club and Solano Yacht Club, along with many other associations.
Mr. Ahrens loved fishing, golfing and boating.
Mr. Ahrens is survived by his wife, Bernice L. of Fairfield; daughters, Joan Colby of Chicago and Peggy Wallin of Fairfield; son, Bill of Suisun; brother, Victor of Ellisville, Mo.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Mildred May Bower
Funeral services for Mildred May Bower, 80, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Vaca Hills Chapel.
Pastor Gary Walker of Valley Evangelical Free Church will officiate. Burial will be private in Winters District Cemetery.
Mrs. Bower died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, in UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento after a short illness.
Born May 24, 1917, in California, she moved to the area three years ago. She was a homemaker for 62 years.
Mrs. Bower enjoyed gardening, cooking, cleaning and the outdoors. She was the first Queen of the Winters Youth Day.
Mrs. Bower is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Rebecca of Vacaville; brothers, Clemet Clark of Carmel Valley and Murray Clark of Colorado; grandchildren, Robert and Darlene Bower of Vacaville.
Visitation is 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Vaca Hills Chapel.
