Clarence G. Cargill

A graveside service for Clarence G. Cargill, 84, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Pastor Glenn Rutledge of First Baptist Church of Vacaville will officiate. Interment will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Cargill died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, in Vallejo after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 22, 1913, in Pueblo,  Colo., he lived in Vacaville for 70 years. He retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Along with his brother he founded the City Garage of Vacaville. An aircraft engine mechanic during World War II, he was given several awards for his suggestions to improve the efficiency of the aircraft and for his efforts toward the war effort. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Sacramento for more than 50 years.

Mr. Cargill is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Myrna and Raymond Russell of Sacramento; son and daughter-in-law, Larry G. and Judy Cargill of Copperopolis; brothers, James, Eugene and Fred, all of Vacaville; two grandchildren and two great-granchildren.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today at McCune Garden Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends contributions to the charity of the donor's choice.

Georgia M. Hitchens

Funeral services for Georgia M. Hitchens, 78, of Fairfield will be 7 p.m. today in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. Interment will in Rolling Hills Memorial Park.

Mrs. Hitchens died Saturday, Jan. 10, 1998, at home after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 16, 1919, in Centerville, Miss., she lived in Fairfield for two years. She was a homemaker for 60 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Hitchens is survived by a daughter, Clara Gordon of Fairfield; sisters, Delia Grant, Emma Watts and Minnie Lee Brown, all of Baton Rouge, La.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Verna Marian LeMelle

A Mass of Christian Burial for Verna Marian LeMelle, 64, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Church.

The Rev. Benedict DeLeon of St. Mary's Church will officiate. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. LeMelle died Friday, Jan. 9, 1998, in David Grant Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Nov. 5, 1933, in New Iberia, La., she moved to the area 27 years ago. She worked as a dietitian for Travis Air Force Base for 13 years.

Mrs. LeMelle enjoyed sewing.

Mrs. LeMelle is survived by her husband, John of Vacaville; daughters, Wanda Bailey of Vacaville, Carmen of Suisun, Eva Pennix of Vacaville and Kathy of Oakland; son, John of Vacaville; mother, Emme Clay of  Louisiana; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today with a Rosary at 7 p.m. today in Vaca Hills Chapel.

Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer's Society of Northern California, P.O. Box 1824, Sacramento 95812.

Margaret Martha Whitten

No formal services will be held for Margaret Martha Whitten, 81, of Vacaville. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Frederick Municipal Cemetery, Frederick, Okla.

Mrs. Whitten died Jan. 14, 1998, at home.

Born June 17, 1916, in Frederick, Okla., she lived in Vacaville two years. She was a homemaker for 57 years. She owned and operated a doll factory in Amarillo,  Texas, called Scarecrow Inc. She distributed dolls throughout the United States. She was also involved in the manufacturing of jewelry.

Mrs. Whitten is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara J. and Ricky L. Todd of Vacaville; son, Coy E. Whitten III of Albuquerque, N.M.; a twin sister, Mildred Cockrell of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

John Tanhueco Martinez

A Mass of Christian Burial for John Tanhueco Martinez, 89, of Suisun will be 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Mr. Martinez died Jan. 10, 1998, at NorthBay Medical Center after a long illness.

Born May 5, 1908, in San Carlos, Pangasinan, Philippine Islands, he moved to Suisun 24 years ago.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He then worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as a woodwork supervisor for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Suisun Post; American Legion, Manuel Quezon Post; Disciples of Jesus at Holy Spirit Church; Fil-Am Federal Retired; Fil-Am Community of Fairfield, Suisun and Vacaville; U.S. Caloocan Club, LTD of the Bay Area; and Sekdar Day Pangasinan Association of Vallejo.

Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife, Hermina of Suisun; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hodge of Boise, Idaho; stepdaughters, Joyce Bautista of San Francisco and Brenda Bautista of Sebastopol; son, John Ronald of Kirkland, Wash.; stepson, Rick Bautista of El Cerrito; sisters, Maura Sarmiento and Rosalee Cunanen, both of the Philippine Islands; brothers, Marcelo, Antero and Angel Tanhueco, all of the Philippine Islands; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

Memorial contributions can be made to Holy Spirit Church Building Fund, 1050 N.  Texas St., Fairfield 94533.

Charlye Carr

Memorial services for Charlye Carr, 78, of Fairfield will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

George Tawzer will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Carr died Jan. 14, 1998, at Fairfield Health Care Center after a short illness.

Born June 15, 1919, in Mount Pleasant,  Texas, she moved to Fairfield 10 years ago. She was a homemaker for most of her adult life.

She worked as a darkroom technician at a photography studio for 15 years in Yuma, Ariz. She was a member of TOPS and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Mrs. Carr enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking and craftwork.

Mrs. Carr is survived by a daughter, Irene Tawzer of Fairfield; grandson, Ray Tawzer of Fairfield; sister, Dixie Howard of Arizona; and brothers, Paul Hamilton of Roswell, N.M., and Jack Hamilton of Yuma, Ariz.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Cleft Palate Association, P.O. Box 499, Fairfield 94533.

Marian Frances Holdener

Memorial services for Marian Frances Holdener, 82, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Monday in Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville.

Father Stephen J. Leonetti will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Ms. Holdener died Jan. 13, 1998, in a Vallejo hospital after a short illness.

Born July 7, 1915, in Compton, she'd lived in Solano County for 62 years. She was a switchboard operator for the California Medical Facility for 25 years and retired in 1985. She was a member of Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville; Moose Lodge and Vacaville; and the Garden Club.

Ms. Holdener was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Ms. Holdener is survived by a daughter, Virginia Kimbel of Lafayette; son, Herman F. of Vacaville; grandchildren, Tim of Acampo, Rick of Southern California and Craig of Dixon; and one great-grandchild, Tyler of Acampo.

Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1652 W.  Texas St., Fairfield 94533.

Arrangements are by Skyview Memorial Lawn in Vallejo.

Alphonse B. Kulpinskas

Memorial services for Alphonse B. Kulpinskas, 87, of Vacaville were held Jan. 2 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Vacaville.

Mr. Kulpinskas died Dec. 26, 1997, after a lengthy illness.

Born Sept. 6, 1911, in Cicero, Ill., he moved to Vacaville in 1977. He was employed by Hagstrom's Food Stores as assistant manager in Oakland until retirement. He was active in the Leisure Town Bowling Association.

Mr. Kulpinskas was an avid fisherman and a Chicago Cubs fan.

Mr. Kulpinskas is survived by his daughter, Maureen Friedheim of Virginia; granddaughters, Juliann Mauck of Dallas,  Texas, and Renee Harrington of Virginia; grandson, Paul Mauck of Maryland; and great-grandson, Harley Mauck of Arizona.

Arrangements are by the Neptune Society of Sacramento.

Dimosthenis Mantalvanos

Funeral services for Dimosthenis Mantalvanos, 78, of Dixon will be 11:30 a.m. today at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Dixon.

Father Maurice O'Brien of St. Peter's Catholic Church will preside. Interment will be at Silveyville Cemetery.

Mr. Mantalvanos died Jan. 13, 1998, in Davis after a sudden illness.

Born Oct. 18, 1919, in Chefalonia, Greece, he lived in Dixon for two years. He was a self-employed auto mechanic for 65 years before retiring. He was the president of the Hellas Athletic Club in San Francisco and he was a member of the Chefalonian Society of San Francisco.

Mr. Mantalvanos is survived by his wife, Anna of Dixon; daughter and son-in-law, Ourania and Gary Riddle of Dixon; son, Dimitri of Bay Point; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Niki of Athens, Greece; brother, Gerasimos of Greece; sister, Erifile of Greece; granddaughter and her husband, Christina and Jeff Stone of Yokoda, Japan; granddaughters, Angela Riddle of Walnut Creek, Sophia Anna and Dimitra of Bay Point, Christiana of Athens, Greece; grandson, Alexander of Athens, Greece; and several nieces and nephews in the Bay Area and in Greece.

Visitation and an Orthodox Trisagion Service were Thursday at McCune's Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

Dennis Lee 'Ben' Benson

Memorial services for Dennis Lee "Ben" Benson, 55, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Jan. 24 at the Vacaville Veterans Memorial Hall.

Inurnment will be private.

Born July 14, 1942, in Woodland, Mr. Benson died Jan. 15, 1998, in David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base after a long illness. He had lived in Vacaville all of his life.

Mr. Benson was an instrumental part in the fund-raising effort for the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He enjoyed the extended family of the veterans community and was a veterans rights activist. He was a past commander of the Brotherhood of Vietnam Veterans and past president of the United Veterans Memorial Association. He was also a member of the American Legion.

He served three tours in Vietnam and one in Thailand.

He is survived by his brothers, Bob of Chicago and Dave of Palo Alto; three nephews; and constant companion, Carolyn Rennert. He was preceded in death by his parents, Margorie and Emory Benson.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel.

John Warren Brown

No formal services will be held for John Warren Brown, 76, of Fairfield at the request of the deceased. Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Brown died Jan. 15, 1998, in NorthBay Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1921, in Idaho, he moved to Fairfield 43 years ago. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Brown attended Northern Idaho College of Education. He received his master's degree at the University of Oregon, taught school at Armijo HIgh for 18 years and was a grape grower in Suisun Valley for 20 years as a vinticulturist. He was past president of the California Teachers Association and past president of the Suisun Valley Farm Center.

Mr. Brown celebrated his 50-year anniversary, was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Fairfield; daughters, Karla Belcher of Pleasanton; Kay Brown of Livermore and Kerri Cozens of Milpitas; a son, Dan Brown of Dallas; and seven grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to American Heart Association, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa 95402.
