Juan Camacho Cortez

Funeral services for Juan Camacho Cortez, 81, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Monday at McCune Garden Chapel.

The Rev. David Crone of Christian Life Center will preside. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Nov. 3, 1916, in Camposeco, Calaveras County, Mr. Cortez died Feb. 18, 1998, after a short illness. He was a resident of Vacaville for more than 50 years.

Mr. Cortez met and married Dolores Ramos in Almeria, Spain. The couple settled in Vacaville in 1948.

He worked as a carpenter for 30 years, and was also a member of the Vacaville Spanish American Club.

He loved gardening, enjoyed spending time with his family, and was described as a "people person."

Mr. Cortez is survived by his wife, Dolores of Vacaville; sons, John and Tony, both of Vacaville, and Brig. Gen. Christopher Cortez of Carlsbad; daughter, Lola Bowman of Redwood City, Hope Deeming and Rosemarie Lindsey, both of Vacaville, and Dr. Linda Cortez of Sacramento; brother, Tony of Winters; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McCune Garden Chapel.

Alice Evans

Funeral services for Alice Evans, 71, of Vacaville will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at McCune Garden Chapel.

The Rev. Benedict DeLeon of St. Mary's Catholic Church will preside. Burial will be private.

Born Sept. 14, 1926, in Salt Lake City, Mrs. Evans died Feb. 18, 1998, in Vacaville after a long illness.

She was a resident of Vacaville for 46 years.

Mrs. Evans was a member of the 3rd Knighters Club of Vacaville for 40 years, and was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge of Vacaville.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles of Vacaville; children, Vivian Martinez of Vacaville, Peggy Shull of Missouri, and Charles Evans II of Vacaville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother, Melva Shellcross of Arizona; sisters, Bonnie Cummins of Arizona, Dorothy DuBois of Las Vegas, Nev., Jackie DuBois of San Diego; and brother, Jimmy DuBois of El Cajon.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel.

Donald John Maher

Funeral services for Donald John Maher, 73, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly will preside. Burial will be private.

Born Aug. 24, 1924, in Walla Walla, Wash., Mr. Maher died Feb. 16, 1998, in Vacaville after a long illness. He was a resident of Vacaville for 73 years.

Mr. Maher retired after 33 years at Travis Air Force Base. At one time, he served on the Vacaville school board.

Mr. Maher is survived by his wife of 49 years, Patricia of Vacaville; children, John Michael of Isleton, Keith Donovan of Alaska, Valain Patricia Isaacson of Green Valley, Deven William of Benicia, Timothy of Napa, Terrence of Connecticut, Stephen of  Washington, and Brian Sean of Alaska; brothers, Terry of Sun City, Patrick William of Vallejo, and James Deven of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a vigil at 6 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel.

Contributions may be made to the St. Joseph's Parish Church Building Fund, 1717 Marshall Road, Vacaville, 95687.

Ruth J. Porter

A memorial service for Ruth J. Porter, 76, will be 10 a.m. today at Bethany Lutheran Church, 621 S. Orchard, in Vacaville.

Born May 23, 1921, in Walnut Ridge, Ark., Mrs. Porter died Feb. 17, 1998, at Kaiser Medical Center in Hayward.

She taught developmentally disabled children for more than 20 years, and had attended graduate school. She was a past member of California Teachers Association, and loved horse racing.

Mrs. Porter is survived by sisters, V. Frances Wind of Brentwood, Mo., and Ellamae Walkup of Arizona.

Arrangements are by Chapel of the Chimes.

Gene Dell Adams

Funeral services for Gene Dell Adams, 56, of Suisun City will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fairfield. The Rev. Gene Muzzio will preside. Interment will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Born Jan. 31, 1942, in Hermiston, Ore., Mr. Adams died Feb. 20, 1998, in Suisun City after a short illness.

He was a systems analyst for West America Bank for 10 years, and was an electrician for Nielson Electric in Lompoc for five years. Also, Mr. Adams was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fairfield, 4th Ward. He loved to garden, and also enjoyed electronics and computers.

Mr. Adams is survived by his wife, Carla of Suisun City; daughter, Jana of Suisun City; son, Sean of Rohnert Park; sisters and brothers-in-law, Greta and Jack Clark of Bend, Ore., Alice and Gordon Kimberly of Idaho, Della and Ellis Howard of Tremonton, Utah, Rosa and Alan Nelson of Estacada, Ore., Nona and Paskett of Salem, Utah, Jeanette of Freewater, Ore., and Vivian and Marvin Hanson of Walnut; and brothers, Robert of Fresno, Charles of Carpenteria, and Jack of Portland.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Contributions may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Missionary Fund, 1355 Springfield Court, Fairfield 94544.

Harriet B. Barrett

Funeral services for Harriet B. Barrett, 85, of Suisun, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. The Rev. Vic Matson will preside. Private interment will be at Rockville Cemetery in Suisun.

Born Sept. 2, 1912, in Mesquite,  Texas, Mrs. Barrett died Feb. 18, 1998, at Kaiser Medical Center in Vallejo after a short illness.

She lived in Green Valley for 25 years.

Mrs. Barrett was a self-employed office manager working in insurance. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in San Jose for 70 years; the Silver Star Chapter No. 3 for 50 years; and the Order of Eastern Star in Vallejo where she was Worthy Matron in 1945 and Deputy Grand Matron in 1949.

She also was a member of the Wednesday Club in Suisun, and the Green Valley Country Club since 1974.

Mrs. Barrett is survived by her husband, Harry of Green Valley; daughter, Sally Ann Davis of Pinecrest; granddaughter, Lynn Souza of Pinecrest; grandsons, Mark Davis of Tucson, Ariz., and Michael Davis of Pinecrest; and great-granddaughters, Courtney Ann Souza and  Taylor Lynn Souza, both of Pinecrest.

Edward W. Burke

A private family service for Edward W. Burke, 90, of Vacaville will be held in Vacaville. Interment will be private in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born June 8, 1907, in New Bedford, Mass., Mr. Burke died Feb. 19, 1998, at Vacaville Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

He had served in the Army in France, and resided in Leisure Town for 30 years. He worked in the restaurant field, and maintenance for Richmond School District.

He was a charter member of the Leisure Town Men's Golf Club and Dance Club, the Vacaville Moose Lodge, and the SIRS club of Fairfield.

Mr. Burke is survived by his wife, Yolanda of Vacaville; daughter, Dorothy Rozak of  South Carolina; sister, Doris Poirier of Massachusetts; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four nieces.

Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa 95402.

Arrangements are by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Ken Gordon

Graveside services were held at Rockville Cemetery for Ken Gordon, 47.

Born Sept. 14, 1950, in  Washington state, Mr. Gordon died Feb. 9, 1998, at San Luis Obispo after a brief illness.

Mr. Gordon grew up in Suisun Valley on Abernathy Lane, and was a graduate of Fairfield High School, class of 1969. He graduated from California Polytechnic Institute, and worked as a professional graphic artist in San Francisco for 15 years.

He enjoyed rock concerts and photography.

Mr. Gordon is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Van and Kathy of Sacramento; sisters, Cherie of Sacramento, and Cris Gordon Caballero of Fairfield; surrogate son, Patrick; and three nieces and a nephew.

He was predeceased by his mother, Betty, in 1991.

Walter Ray Powell

Upon his request, no formal services are planned for Walter Ray Powell, 93, of Vacaville.

Born Oct. 20, 1904, in Russell County, Ky., Mr. Powell died Feb. 18, 1998, at his Vacaville home.

He attended Western Kentucky Teacher's College and graduated in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky.

Mr. Powell had a 40-year career with the Corps of Engineers in Nashville,  Jefferson City and Omaha, the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver, and the California Department of Water Resources in Sacramento.

He retired in 1967 to Leisure Town, and traveled extensively throughout the world with his wife, Ora. He was an avid fly fisherman and carpenter.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Powell is survived by his son, Donald; and numerous nephews and nieces. Arrangements are under the direction of Vaca Hills Chapel.

Vincent Rossi

A gathering was held for Vincent Rossi, 76, of Dixon.

Born Nov. 21, 1921, in Woodland, Mr. Rossi died Feb. 15 of a heart attack at the Santa Rosa Hospital.

Mr. Rossi graduated from the Dixon schools and attended the University of California, Berkeley, until the beginning of World War II.

He graduated from Kings Point Maritime Academy in 1943 and entered the Navy where he served as an engineering officer on the destroyer USS Hale. The Hale engaged in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa and the occupation of Japan after the surrender.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Mr. Rossi returned to Dixon and joined as a partner in the family business, Emil Rossi & Co., a farm equipment and automobile dealership.

He served for several years as a member of one of Dixon's first Planning Commissions. He was instrumental in a family project to develop and build Dixon's first mini-shopping center in the North First Street areas, now known as Archer Plaza.

On his retirement in 1988, Mr. Rossi moved to Sonoma. He was an accomplished watercolorist and received awards for his paintings in numerous California art shows.

Mr. Rossi is survived by his sons, Richard of Felton, and Philip of Burlingame; grandchildren, Vinnie and Marianne, both of Scotts Valley, and Sherida and Allison, both of Burlingame; sister, Marie  Johnson of Dixon; and brother, Emil Jr., of Dixon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Badt Rossi.

Arrangements were by Milton Carpenter Funeral Home in Dixon.

Katherine Margaret Smithson

A Mass of the Resurrection for Katherine Margaret Smithson, 54, of Vacaville will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Benedict DeLeon of St. Mary's Catholic Church will officiate. Interment will follow in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Aug. 26, 1943, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Smithson died Feb. 20, 1998, in her home in Vacaville after a short illness.

Mrs. Smithson lived in Vacaville for the past 30 years. She was an educator at Green Valley Middle School in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District for 20 years. She taught home economics, history and social studies.

Mrs. Smithson is survived by her husband, Elbert L. of Vacaville; sons, Steven and Lonnie, both of Vacaville; daughter, Karen Rivera of Vacaville; brother, Charles Briggs of Sacramento; mother, Mildred Briggs of Suisun City; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Father's House, 607 Elmira Road, No. 321, Vacaville, 95687.
