Enrico Joseph Bradanini

Enrico Joseph Bradanini, a rancher who moved to Vacaville eight decades ago and built his Gibson Canyon ranch home from the ground up, died March 9, 1998, after a long illness.

Mr. Bradanini, 83, prided himself on being part of a dwindling breed of independent cattlemen in Solano County, he told The Reporter in 1996.

Mr. Bradanini was born June 7, 1914, in Grass Valley.

He moved to the English Hills region with his parents, Caesar and Elizabeth Bradanini, and five brothers from Grass Valley some 80 years ago. His father bought a small apricot orchard, and Mr. Bradanini enrolled in a one-room school on Cantelow Road.

He was one of fewer than 40 graduates in the class of 1934 of Vacaville High School - back when the population was about 800 and the city was covered with orchards.

"It was all orchards then, none of this stuff that's going on now with a house every 10 feet," Mr. Bradanini told The Reporter.

Mr. Bradanini moved to his Gibson Canyon ranch in 1942, building his home with his own hands.

"I built this house $10 at a time - when I moved into it, I didn't owe 5 cents," Mr. Bradanini said.

A member of the Cattleman's Association, Mr. Bradanini rode herd on about 50 cattle scattered between his 19-acre Gibson Canyon ranch, 110 acres in the English Hills and a small leased pasture in Lagoon Valley.

He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 29 years.
