Robert F. Sherman
Funeral services have been held for retired Col. Robert F. Sherman, 76, of Austin, Texas.
Interment, with full military honors, was in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.
Born July 10, 1921, in McAllen, Texas, Col. Sherman died May 11, 1998.
He grew up in Harlingen, Texas, where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Texas and later joined the Air Force. He served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars and was highly decorated. After 33 years, he retired as chief pilot of the 22nd Air Force at Travis Air Force Base.
Col. Sherman participated in "Operation Homecoming" and the "Flight to Freedom," which brought home the first planeload of U.S. prisoners of war from Vietnam.
He moved to Onion Creek in Austin and became a licensed real estate salesman with Mustin-Porter Realty.
He was a member of Dadaelians, Onion Creek Country Club and Hyde Park Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathryn Lowrance; daughter, Sandra Berry of Houston; son, Ron; daughter-in-law, Jill, and her son, Travis of Austin; grandsons, Quint Berry of Austin and Chris of Virginia; granddaughter, Kimberly Link, her husband, George and great-granddaughter, Tyler Ann Link of Dallas; granddaughter, Tara of Austin; sister, Betty Jo DeCuir, and her husband, Cliff, of California; brother, Wallace, and his wife, Shirley, of Oklahoma; sisters, Barbara Ashley and Mary Jo Painter of California; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Buell and his mother and stepfather, Grace and Lewis.

Everett L. Johnston
A memorial service for Everett L. "Ole" Johnston of Sonoma will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bates, Evans & Fehrensen Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Larry Moore of the Sonoma Christian Fellowship will preside.
Born Oct. 28, 1919, Mr. Johnston died May 19, 1998. He was 78.
Mr. Johnston was a graduate of Colorado A&M University with a master's degree in forestry. He was also a World War II Army veteran, having served with the 33rd Quartermaster Corps. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
For more than 30 years, he worked in the lumber and wood preserving business. He was also a member and past president, from 1969 to 1970, of the Black Bart 181 Hoo Hoo Club.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carolyn of Sonoma; daughters and sons-in-law, Cheri and Richard Brinkman of Vacaville, Jo Ana "Jodi" and Robert Duffy of Sonoma, and Vicki Owens of Sonoma; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kathy of Sonoma; grandchildren, Lisa and Karen Brinkman; Jill Rowe and husband, Nate; Sgt. Eric H. Johnston, Philip and Sarah Owens; Tyler and Casey Duffy; great-grandchildren, Brianna Willis and Mickela Rowe; brothers, Darol of Fairbury, Ill., and Marvin of Springfield, Ill.; sister, Phyliss Armfield of Fort Collins, Colo., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Nancy Mae Pierce
Graveside services for Nancy Mae Pierce, 65, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rockville Cemetery.
Stan Sanderson of the Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery.
Mrs. Pierce died May 21, 1998, at home after a long illness.
Born May 7, 1933, in Los Angeles, she lived in Fairfield for 33 years. She was a homemaker for more than 45 years.
Mrs. Pierce loved working with arts and crafts. She was loved and cherished by her family and will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Pierce is survived by her husband, Danny; daughters, Donna Madox of Fresno and Linda Twohig of San Antonio, Texas; sons, John Shaeffer of Fairfield, Danny Shaeffer of San Rafael, Robert Shaeffer of Marysville and Charles Shaeffer of Sacramento; stepson, Brad of San Antonio, Texas; brother, Ronald Highlend of Phoenix, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
David William Ross
Services will be private for David William Ross of Fairfield, who died May 20, 1998, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo. He was 77.
Born July 16, 1920, in Sparks, Nev., Mr. Ross lived in Fairfield for 16 years.
He was a high school teacher at Grant Jr. High School in Sacramento for 14 years, retiring in 1982. He worked for 16 years in life insurance sales for Cal-Western Life in Sacramento.
He was in the Army Infantry from 1943 to 1946.
He participated in the Solano Mall Walkers, SIRS No. 106, and the Fairfield Ballroom Dancers.
He enjoyed reading books and watching and listening to educational programs on television and radio. He encouraged young people to stay in school and get a good education.
Mr. Ross is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Fairfield; daughters, Patricia Horn of Grass Valley, Cheryl of Clearwater, Fla., Phyllis Williams-Keller of Sonora, and Jennifer Putica of Pioneer; sisters, Anna Bess Schott of Burlingame, Josephine Gowdy of Aptos, Mary Jane Lasell of Concord, Sarah N. Dunlop of Pleasant Hill, Faith DeVinney of Honolulu, Hope Fulwiler of Spokane, Wash., and Kathy O'Toole of Cape Coral, Fla.; brothers, Paul Leslie of Lynden, Wash., Harry P. of Vacaville, Samuel C. of El Centro, and Daniel F. of Campbell; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Leslie and Anna Josaphine.

Tommie Lyle Ward
Memorial services for Tommie Lyle Ward, 74, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Masonic Temple, 412 Travis Blvd., Fairfield.
Burial will be in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery
in Gustine.
Mr. Ward died May 20, 1998, in Vallejo after a long illness.
Born April 29, 1924, in Big Sandy, Mont., he moved to Fairfield 40 years ago. He retired from Travis Air Force Base as a work center supervisor for the radio shop in 1978.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific.
He was an active member of Suisun Lodge No. 55, F&AM; Scottish Rite of Oakland; Ben Ali Shrine, Sacramento; Montezuma Shrine Club, Vacaville, where he was on the board of directors in 1976 and secretary-treasurer from 1981 to 1983 and from 1989 to 1991. He was secretary of the Ben Ali Yacht Club from 1985 to 1986 and president of the Ben Ali Radio Club in 1987. He was a member of Suisun Chapter No. 2, Order of Eastern Star; Disabled American Veterans No. 81 of Suisun; American Legion Post No. 550 of Vallejo, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He was a member of the Church of Christ in Fairfield and of the Fairfield Senior Center Advisory Committee in 1992.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife of 51 years, LaVona of Fairfield; two sons, Thomas and Garry, both of Fairfield; and brother, Jack of Napa; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Robert Baumgarten
A memorial service for Robert "Bob" Baumgarten is still pending.
Born Dec. 21, 1933, in Kaukauna, Wis., Mr. Baumgarten died May 19, 1998, in San Antonio after a battle with cancer.
A veteran of of the Korean and Vietnam wars, military service helped shape his life. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant at Travis Air Force Base on May 1, 1983, and from Civil Service ARTS on April 1, 1988. He and his wife, Helen, then enjoyed a full-time life of recreational vehicle use. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, golfing, hunting and puttering about outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Helen; son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Kristal; daughters, Pamela and Cheryl and her husband John Patrick Carline; grandchildren, Michael, Tina, David, Randy, Cayia, Max and Robert; and one brother and five sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ellen of Kaukauna, and four brothers.

Leslie James Carson Jr.
Services for Leslie James Carson Jr., 81, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Vaca Hills Chapel. Floyd Brandt will preside. Burial will be private in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.
Born Oct. 31, 1916, in Greenfield, Mr. Carson died May 20 at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield. He moved to the area in 1961.
Mr. Carson was a retired major from the Air Force, serving 20 years. He served in the South Pacific during World War II as a bomber pilot. He was an inspector for the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads.
He was a member of the Re004 . 0009.01tired Officers Association, Widowed Persons Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Couples Club.
He was an avid flier for more than 50 years, and his favorite pastimes since retiring included going to his grandchildren's ballgames and playing on the "Sewer Rats" ball teams.
Mr. Carson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Les and Amelia of Vacaville; grandchildren, Elizabeth of Vacaville, David of Elk Grove, and P.J. of Boise, Idaho; great-grandchild, Abigail of Elk Grove; various cousins and nephews; and special friend and companion, Jane Shain of Suisun.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Leatha, and his daughter, Bette.
Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Monday in Vaca Hills Chapel. Contributions may be made to NorthBay Hospice.
Abel Munguia
Funeral services for Abel Munguia, 23, of Suisun will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.
The Rev. Umberto Penunuri of Holy Spirit Catholic Church will preside. Interment will be at Rockville Cemetery.
Mr. Munguia died May 19, 1998, in Sacramento after a short illness.
Born Oct. 5, 1974, in Tijuana, Mexico, he lived in Suisun for 23 years. He worked for Precision Drivelines as a diesel mechanic, University Technical Institute for six months, and was a full-time student at University Technical Institue in Phoenix, Ariz., for 1 1/2 years before he graduated with honors. He was a certified automotive and diesel technician. He worked for Food-4-Less for three years. He was a graduate of Armijo High School in 1994.
Mr. Munguia loved working with cars. He was a beloved husband, son, brother and proud father-to-be.
Mr. Munguia is survived by his wife, Jennifer of Suisun; father, Luis Sr. of Suisun; mother, Paula of Suisun; brothers, Luis Jr., Adam, Javier, Jamie and Efren, all of Suisun; sister, Blanca Carbajal of Fairfield; grandmother, Josefina Lopez of Mexico; two nieces and one nephew.
Visitation is 5 to 9 p.m. and Rosary will be 7 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home Chapel.
Joanna Valente
Catholic Prayer Service for Joanna Valente, 42, of Fairfield will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Miss Valente died May 20, 1998, in Fairfield after a short illness.
Born June 7, 1955, in Dover, Del., she lived in Fairfield four months.
Miss Valente is survived by her mother and father, Chuck and Chris of Fairfield; brother, Tony of Fairfield, grandmother, Celia of Long Island, N.Y., and numerous loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Kellie Brianna Abraham
Funeral services for Kellie Brianna Abraham, 6, of Vacaville will be 4 p.m. today in Chapel One at the Travis Air Force Base.

in Southfield, Mich.
Kellie died Sunday at home after a long illness.
Born Feb 4, 1992, in Alaska, she lived in Vacaville for five years.
Kellie is survived by her parents, Brian and Susan of Vacaville; grandparents, Janice and Ronald of Detroit; and brothers, Michael and Zachary of Vacaville.

Donald Peter Viri
A Mass of the Resurrection for Donald Peter Viri, 63, of Fairfield will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield.
The Rev. Sebastian Meyer will officiate.
Burial will take place at noon Thursday at the Holy Cross Cemetery
in Colma.
Mr. Viri died May 23, 1998, at his home in Fairfield after a long illness.
Born on May 6, 1935, in Detroit, Mich., he moved to Fairfield 11 years ago.
Mr. Viri was the owner and operator of Viri Manufacturing, where he designed and built titanium bicycles for 11 years.
He also had a patent for an apparatus used in mixing gasoline. A Member Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus No. 5803 and the American Welding Society, he worked for Rockwell Industries and also on the Saturn 5 project in Alabama.
He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Artillery as well as the National Guard from 1951 to 1961.
In 1944, Mr. Viri lived in South San Francisco and Millbrae, where he was a welding engineer. He held a California state teaching credential in welding and metalology.
He is survived by his wife, Judith G. of Fairfield; daughters, Michelle Cintas and Danette of Fairfield; sons, Michael, Danny and Glenn of Fairfield; sister, Virginia Antonano of South San Francisco; brother, Rinaldo of San Mateo; and three grandchildren.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home, 180 East Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville. From 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday they may call at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Fairfield.
The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial.

Jim Farrell
A memorial service for Jim Farrell, 70, of Abilene, Texas, will be held in Vacaville at a future date.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday in Abilene.
Mr. Farrell died May 22, 1998, in an Abilene hospital. He will be cremated.
Born in Pratt, Kan., Mr. Farrell received a bachelor's degree from St. Louis University and a master's degree and administrative certification from Sacramento State University. Prior to retirement he worked as a school psychologist and director of special education in the Vacaville Unified School District. Mr. Farrell was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Family Catholic Church in Abilene. He moved from Georgetown, Texas, to Abilene in 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Abilene; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia Farrell-Lane and David Lane of Vacaville, and Lisa and Stephen Smentek of Abilene; one grandchild; and six stepgrandchildren.
Mr. Farrell was preceded in death by his son, James.
