Chester Babb

Funeral services for Chester Johnathan Babb, 62, of Japan will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine. Burial will be at the cemetery.

Born July 15, 1936, in Kansas, he lived in Vacaville 17 years ago. In 1981, he moved to Japan. He served 28 years in the U.S. Air Force and retired as a master sergeant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Babb enjoyed fishing, traveling, hunting and gun collecting. He was also a member of the Masons of Japan.

Mr. Babb is survived by his wife, Yoko of Sacramento; daughters, Caroline Felan of Bertram,  Texas, and Kathleen A. Windover of Sacramento; sister, Ruth Ann Eaton of Mexico; and five grandchildren.

Visitation is private. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Vaca Hills Chapel.

Josephine 'Jo' Birkland

Visitation for Josephine "Jo" Birkland, 76, of Santa Rosa, will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Lafferty & Smith Colonial Chapel, 4321 Sonoma Highway, Santa Rosa.

A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. at Star of the Valley Catholic Church, 545  White Oak Drive, Santa Rosa. Interment will be at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Born July 19, 1922, in Tracy, Mont., Mrs. Birkland died July 21, 1998, in Santa Rosa.

She attended elementary school in Sand Coulee, Mont. She graduated from Centerville High School in 1940.

She then worked for the Bureau of Reclamation in Great Falls, Mont.

In September 1948, she transferred from East Base (now Malstrom Air Force Base) to Anchorage, Ala., where she worked as a secretary for the 57th Fighter Wing. There she met a young pilot, Robert Kenneth Birkland, whom she married in Biloxi, Miss., on Dec. 31, 1949.

She raised her family in Vacaville while her husband was stationed at Travis Air Force Base.

She was active in the Boy Scouts and as a volunteer at Holy Spirit School, where her children went to school.

She moved to Santa Rosa in 1970 and worked for Sonoma County in the personnel department. She was also involved with the Rincon Riders.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

She is survived by her daughter, Maryellen of Santa Rosa; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Stephen Richards of Cupertino and Joanna and Jerry Fox of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Sandy of Bodega Bay; sisters, Gertie Pancich, Betty Funyak and Janice Olson; brothers, Walter, Henry, Andrew, Robert, Joseph and Thomas Aline; sisters-in-law, Mary Van Nostrand, Martha Schuchardt, Betty Willett and Ruth Sabol; and eight grandchildren.

Susan A. Preston

Burial for Susan A. Preston, 41, of Vacaville will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Upon the family's request, there will be no formal services for Ms. Preston.

Ms. Preston died July 20, 1998, in Vacaville.

Born Nov. 11, 1956, Ms. Preston lived in Vacaville the past five years. She worked in the secretarial field the past 15 years. She loved animals.

Ms. Preston is survived by her parents, Anthony and Dolores Riddell of Vacaville; brothers, Michael Riddell of Milbrae and John Riddell of San Bruno; and three nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in Ms. Preston's name for breast cancer research to the American Cancer Society, c/o Ruth Bradanini, 290 Fruitvale Road, Vacaville 95688.

McCune Garden Chapel handled the arrangements.

Roy Joseph Hellickson

A memorial service for Roy Joseph Hellickson, 63, of Napa, will be Monday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The Rev. Robert Grove will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Mr. Hellickson died July 22, 1998, in Napa after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 23, 1934, in Galena, Ill., Mr. Hellickson lived in Napa for 18 years.

He lived in Fairfield for nine years beginning in 1972 and was president of Bank of Fairfield for six years. He had been a Bay Area banker several years.

Mr. Hellickson was in the Air Force and served in Korea from 1952 to 1956. He was a master sergeant.

He was a former member of the Fairfield Lions Club and Green Valley Country Club where he enjoyed golf.

He was chairman of the United Way of Northern California one year.

Mr. Hellickson is survived by his wife, Sidna; daughter, Karen Hellickson of Davis; son, Roy of Fairfield; sister, Dorothy Kroning of Wisconsin; brother, Robert of San Francisco; mother, Mary of Napa; and grandson, Perry Hellickson-Sabelhaus of Davis.

A memorial contribution may be made to the Diabetes Society of Solano County, 817 Missouri St., No. 4, Fairfield 94533.

Susan Phyllis Hernandez

Funeral services for Mrs. Susan Phyllis Hernandez, 71, of Suisun City, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

The Rev. Louie Valenzuela will officiate.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bryan Braker Funeral Home Chapel. Rosary will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryan Braker Funeral Home Chapel.

Born Feb. 5, 1927, in Hartland, Kan., she died July 22, 1998, in Fairfield after a short illness.

She lived in Suisun City for 43 years.

She worked at the David Grant Medical Center for 28 years. Her last assignment there was as secretary to the chairman of the Department of Medicine. She retired in 1996 but returned three months later and worked in asthma education for a private contractor.

She also served as an equal employment opportunity counselor at David Grant from 1977 until her retirement, and as secretary to the Federal Managers Association.

She was a member of the Solano County Mental Health Department, the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield, and of Lady of Guadalupe at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Louis of Suisun City; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Margaret of Belfair, Wash.; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra L. and Dennis Crown of Clinton, Md., and Denise F. and Bob DeLaRosby of Suisun City; sisters, Frances Fisher of  Washington, D.C., Agnes Rodriguez of Gering, Neb., Phyllis Vyers of Port Richey, Fla., Jane Sandoval and Catherine Ramirez of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; brothers, John Ramirez of Cheyenne, Wyo., Merced Ramirez of Omaha, Neb., Isabel Ramirez of Gering, Neb. and Martin Ramirez of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grand children; two great-grandchildren; and 41 nephews and nieces.

Beverley J. 'B.J.' Kane

Funeral services for Beverley J. "B.J." Kane, 44, of Fairfield, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

The Rev. Jack Woolin of Southside Church of Christ in Richmond will officiate. Burial will be in Rockville Cemetery in Suisun Valley.

Mrs. Kane died July 23, 1998, in Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo.

Born May 19, 1954, in San Francisco, she lived in Fairfield for 16 years.

Mrs. Kane worked for the California Department of Corrections for 19 years. She worked for five years at San Quentin State Prison until 1985. She worked the last 14 years of her career at California State Prison, Solano. At the time of her death, she was a correctional lieutenant.

Mrs. Kane is survived by her husband, Anthony P. Kane Sr. of Fairfield; son, Anthony Jr. of San Diego; daughter, Cleopatra of San Diego; father, George McKinney of San Mateo; and sister, Alma McKinney of San Pablo.

Visitation will be at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1652 W.  Texas St., No. 110, Fairfield 94533.

Leonard D. Keck

Graveside services for Leonard D. Keck, 71, of Doyle, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Luke Kast, a friend of the Keck family will officiate. Burial will follow.

Mr. Keck died Sunday, July 12, 1998 at his home after a long illness.

Born Aug. 25, 1926 in Okemah, Okla. he lived in Doyle for 14 years. He was formerly a Vacaville resident from 1946-1984. He worked in the construction business for 36 years having been employed by such companies as Syar Industries, Solano Concrete and Olive-DaSilva, where he was a foreman. He was a past member of the Circle "D" Horsemans Association and the Yolo County Horseman's Association.

Mr. Keck is survived by his wife, Pauline of Doyle; daughters, Elaine Montgomery of Shongaloo, La. and Sandra Cowan of Doyle; sons, Glen of Vacaville, Robert and Danny, both of Doyle; sisters, Viola Brown of Ark., Velma Lee Westmoreland of  Texas, Merle Dominguez of Los Angeles, Carol Garcia of Doyle and Mag Anderson of Clear Lake; brother, Tommy Dean of Modesto; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Marie C. Stevenson

Graveside services for Mrs. Marie C. Stevenson, 89, of Vacaville, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Vacaville/Elmira Cemetery.

The Rev. Boyett of St. Marys Catholic Church will officiate.

Inurnment will be at the Vacaville/Elmira Cemetery.

Born Oct. 17, 1908, in Jackson, Mrs. Stevenson died July 22, 1998, in Fairfield after a brief illness.

She was a secretary at Hemlock School in Vacaville for over 20 years before retiring.

She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church. She was very active in Meals on Wheels and volunteered at Winsor House. She was a member of the "Hookers" Sewing Club and of the "Sherry Club."

She also was a very loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, of Vacaville; daughter, Carol Haase of South Lake Tahoe; son, Albert of South Lake Tahoe; sisters, Elsie Radelnich of Sacramento and Kay Tozzi of Woodland; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three nephews and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her son, Andrew in 1962.

Contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Robert Lynn Rouland

Graveside funeral services for Robert Lynn Rouland, 60, of Lancaster will be 11 a.m. Friday at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Rouland died July 25, 1998, at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center in Lancaster after a brief illness.

Born April 19, 1938, in Vacaville, he was an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration for 20 years and a member of the Antelope Valley Tail Wind Model Airplane Club.

Mr. Rouland is survived by his wife of 36 years, Ruth Laverne Rouland of Lancaster; daughters, Robyn Lea Rouland of California City and Toni Ann Rouland of Lancaster; son, Dr. Randall L. Rouland of Fresno and his wife Kristy; sister, Marilyn McCants of Vacaville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

James E. Eble Sr.

Memorial services for James E. Eble Sr., 69, of Fairfield will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Fairfield, 2700 Dover Ave.

The Rev. James E. Eble Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born June 8, 1929, in Oakdale, Tenn., Mr. Eble died July 27, 1998, at David Grant Medical Center on Travis Air Force Base after a brief illness.

Mr. Eble served 24 years in the Air Force and retired as a master sergeant after serving at various air bases in the Midwest and 12 years in the Philippines. He retired at Travis Air Force Base.

During his service time he worked in the accounting and finance department and continued his position in civil service for the Army for five years.

From 1976 to 1983 he owned and operated the Filipino-Oriental Store in Fairfield.

A member of Mount Carmel Church's cancer support group, he also was a eucharistic minister and a visiting chaplain at David Grant Medical Center. He was an avid fisherman, loved baking apple pies and specialized in southern fried chicken.

Mr. Eble is survived by his wife, Aida of Fairfield; daughters and son-in-law, Martha of Fairfield, Mary Ann of El Paso,  Texas, and Patricia and Dan O'Reilly of Sonoma; sons, James of San Francisco and Walter of Fairfield; brother, Arlo of Oakdale, Tenn.; mother, Ida Mae of Harriman, Tenn.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W.  Texas St. in Fairfield. A vigil service will follow the rosary.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Catholic Foreign Ministry Society of America, 2555 Webster St., San Francisco 94115.

Philip A. Moehr

A memorial service for Philip A. Moehr, 93, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday in McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

Longtime friend and Solano County Supervisor Bill Carroll will officiate. Mr. Moehr will be cremated.

Mr. Moehr died July 26, 1998, in his Leisure Town home after a long illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1904, in Akron, Ohio, he had lived in Stow and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. In 1951 he came to California, first establishing residence in Vallejo and then in Vacaville after the opening of Leisure Town.

Always a salesman, Mr. Moehr first sold baked goods, then life insurance, and finally real estate. He retired from Conger Real Estate in Vallejo after having been a broker and a partner in the firm.

Mr. Moehr and his wife Eddith were fondly known as "Mr. and Mrs. CPR" because of their well-publicized efforts to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They began teaching in 1977 when they were in their 70s and retired 14 years later. He also was an avid lawn bowler, woodworker and fisherman.

Mr. Moehr is survived by his wife of 73 years, Eddith Moehr; a son, Robert of Clinton Township, Mich.; two daughters, Doris Beresford of Davis and Phyllis Rittenhouse of Auburn; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
