Maggie L. Cooper

Graveside services for Maggie L. Cooper, 49, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Friday in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Cooper died Aug. 13, 1998, while traveling through Harlan, Iowa.

Born Feb. 1, 1949, on Offit Air Force Base in Iowa, had been employed for seven years by the California Department of Corrections at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville.

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband, David of Vacaville; daughter, Kris Tina Carson of Vacaville; son, Jeremy Jason Forshay of Fairfield; sisters, Marta Vosberg of Egan, Minn., and Jodi Griffith of Minneapolis, Minn.; brothers, Robert Griffith Jr. of Mississippi and Lester Griffith of Houston,  Texas; and two grandchildren.

A private family visitation will be Friday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army of Vacaville, 635 William St., Vacaville 95687.

Peter Pilotti

A Mass of Christian Burial for Peter Pilotti, 90, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Vacaville.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly will officiate. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira cemetery.

Born May 21, 1908, in Amsterdam, N.Y., he died Aug. 17, 1998, in Vacaville, after a short illness.

He lived in Vacaville five years and had worked as a tile setter, including at Grove Valve and Regulator Co. for 33 years.

He was a member of the Fratellanza Club of Emeryville.

Mr. Pilotti is survived by his wife, Enis; daughters, Susan Murphy of Vacaville and Janice O'Donnell of Boulder City, Nev.; son, Angelo of Longview, Wash.; sisters, Grace Nola of San Jose, Lu Rinetti of Oakland, and Virginia Potestio and Mary Mondello, both of San Leandro; brother, Vincent of Hayward; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 12 to 5 p.m. Thursday in McCune Garden Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the city of Vacaville Respite Program, 411 Kendal St., Vacaville 95688.

Joseph Bruce Smiley

Private memorial services for Joseph Bruce Smiley, 90, of Vacaville will be Monday.

Inurnment also will be private.

Born Jan. 12, 1908, in Highlands, Mr. Smiley died Aug. 17, 1998, in Vacaville.

Mr. Smiley was a mapping engineer for Orange County for 33 years before retiring. He was a graduate of the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles. He received a teaching certificate from Redlands University. He served in the U.S. Army. He also was a member of the Methodist Church all of his life.

Mr. Smiley was an avid reader, loved gardening and art.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Faith of Vacaville; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Shelly of Rancho Cucamonga, and John and Jacqueline of Dixon; brother, Edward of Kentucky; grandchildren, Matt, Steven, Aaron and Brett of Ontario, Ben, Judson, Samuel and Luke of Dixon; and one great-grandchild,  Taylor Rose of Orange.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Fern Zelda Wallof

Funeral services for Fern Zelda Wallof, 88, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Vacaville Christian Church.

The Rev. Sue Schlagel of the Vacaville Christian Church will officiate. A private burial will be in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born May 5, 1910, in Canova, S.D., Mrs. Wallof died Aug. 15, 1998, in Winsor House Convalescent Hospital after a long illness.

She moved to the area about 21 years ago. She worked as a sales clerk for 20 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Genean Hixon of Vacaville; son, Jerry Smith of Twentynine Palms; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Jerry Lee Caldwell

A memorial service for Jerry Lee Caldwell, 44, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The Rev. Davis of CME Church will preside. Inurnment will be private at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born May 10, 1954, in San Francisco, Mr. Caldwell died Aug. 17, 1998, at NorthBay Medical Center after a brief illness.

He lived in Fairfield for 16 years, and worked as an auto mechanic.

Mr. Caldwell is survived by his sisters, Gladys Watson and Christine Bell of Los Angeles, Catherine Young of Victorville, Joyce Piggee of Fairfield, and Linda Bazemore of Vacaville; brothers, Curtis Bell of Realto, Billy Bell of Vacaville, Charles  Johnson of Oakland, Grant of Fairfield, and Joseph of Suisun City; stepson, Dornal Burton of Vallejo; three aunts; and several nieces and nephews.

Rudy E. Centeno

A Mass of Christian Burial for Rudy E. Centeno, 67, of Dixon will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Dixon.

The Rev. Maurice O'Brien will preside. Burial will follow the Mass at Silveyville Cemetery.

Born April 25, 1931, in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, Mr. Centeno died Aug. 18, 1998, in Sacramento after a lengthy illness. He was a Solano County resident for more than 40 years.

In his early years Mr. Centeno worked as a television technician for Simpson TV repair in Dixon, but most recently he worked as an operating engineer for Armor Meat Company. He was a member of the Operating Engineers.

Mr. Centeno is survived by his wife, Lina of Vacaville; sons, Rudy E. Jr. of San Jose and Manuel of Reno; daughters, Mercedes C. Parker of Woodland, Leticia of Elk Grove, and Sylvia C. Ray of San Angelo,  Texas; sister, Betty Sanchez of Houston,  Texas; brother, Jose M. Guitierrez of Dixon; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Dixon. The rosary will be 7:30 p.m. at the church.

Contributions may be made to the NorthBay Hospice, 1800  Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield 94533.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.

David L. Hofmann

A celebration of life for David L. Hofmann, 53, of Fairfield will be 1 p.m. Sunday in Vacaville.

Born April 20, 1945, in Berkeley, Mr. Hofmann died Aug. 13, 1998, at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield of advanced lung cancer.

A Solano County resident for 30 years, Mr. Hofmann worked with the developmentally disabled at USARC Pace in Vacaville and Fairfield.

He is survived by his mother, Catherine; brothers, Paul and Steve; wife, Penny; daughters, Jenny Van de Poel and Beth Davies; aunt, Kay; and cousin, Carol.

Badr Ziadeh Jacob

Mass for Badr Ziadeh Jacob, 61, of Suisun City will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. Michael Downey will preside. Entombment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born Jan. 1, 1937, in Palestine, Mr. Jacob died suddenly Aug. 18, 1998, at his home. He had been a resident of Suisun City for 17 years.

Mr. Jacob came to the United States in 1969 looking for the "American dream." He owned and operated Park Avenue Food Market in Plainfield, N.J., for five years, then moved to California in 1982. He owned and operated Joe's Buffet with his wife and son-in-law.

He then owned and operated Bud's Buffet in Sacramento for the past 10 years. He was a member and past president at Birzeit Society.

Mr. Jacob is survived by his wife, Hiam of Suisun City; daughters and sons-in-law, May and George Asmar of Palestine, Nabiha and Saeb Ziadeh of Suisun City, and Louise Jacob of Suisun City; sons, Zaid and John of Suisun City; sisters, Selma Ziadeh and Hilweh Ziadeh, both of Palestine; brothers, Badi Jacob of Somerset, N.J., and Yacoub Ziadeh of Palestine; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A rosary will be 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Zoeila Ann Mendes

A memorial service for Zoeila Ann Mendes, 62, of Winters will be 7 p.m. Sunday at 104 Third Street in Winters.

Born Oct. 23, 1935, in Yuma, Ariz., Mrs. Mendes died Aug. 14, 1998, at her Winters home. Prior to moving to Winters, she was an active member of Vacaville Youth Football, serving as president for 15 years and president of Northern California Football for 10 years.

She was the first female lifeguard in the San Diego area to work on the city's beach in the mid-1950s.

She is survived by her six sons and daughters-in-law, Terrance Knudson of Paso Robles, Keith and Jackie Knudson of Vacaville, Sean and Joanne Knudson of Winters, Mike Knudson of Vacaville, Tim Knudson of Clearlake, and Glen Mendes of Vacaville.

All friends of the family are welcome to attend the service.

Frank  Johnson McCann

Funeral services for Frank  Johnson McCann, 82, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

The Rev. Russell O. McCann, son of Mr. McCann, will preside. The Northern Solano Lodge, No. 2534 Sons of Italy in America will also officiate at a second service on Monday.

Burial will be held Thursday at the Claysville Cemetery in Claysville, Penn., where Mr. McCann will be interred next to his wife, Leora, who died in June 1992.

Born Dec. 23, 1915, in Gates, Penn., Mr. McCann died Aug. 21, 1998, at his home after a long illness.

Mr. McCann had been in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1942-1945. He was then employed by the federal government, working at the Benicia Arsenal, followed by an assignment at Hunter's Point, and finally Mare Island Naval Shipyard, where he was in welding for 27 years.

Mr. McCann was a proud member of the Northern Solano Lodge, No. 2534 Sons of Italy in America. He was also a lifetime member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He had lived in Solano County the past 53 years, and in Fairfield for 27 years.

Mr. McCann is survived by his sons, Frank of Anchorage, Alaska, Russell of Van Nuys, and Richard of California City; brother, Leonard of Florida; sister, Martha Lutes of  Pennsylvania; nephew, Harlan of Vallejo; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Nichole Adele Hartin

Funeral services for Nichole Adele Hartin, 23, of Vacaville will be 3 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The Rev. Lester Seto of Bethany Lutheran Church of Vacaville will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Born Dec. 22, 1974, in Minot, N.D., Ms. Hartin died Aug. 18, 1998, in Vacaville after a long illness. She lived at Travis Air Force Base and Vacaville for 11 years.

She graduated from Vanden High School in 1994 and attended Napa Valley College. She was a member of the Parents for Heroes of Travis Air Force Base, and Camp Okizu of Northern California.

She played softball, basketball and volleyball, and enjoyed archery. She helped other children with learning disabilities and life-threatening illnesses.

Ms. Hartin is survived by her parents, Renae and Daniel of Vacaville; grandparents, Jeannine and Arnold Watson of Minot, and Otheda and Patrick Hartin of Omaha, Neb.; great-grandmothers, Emma Gibbons of Minot and Faye Pruitt of Wichita, Kan.; and brothers, Shaun P. Hartin and Mitchell Mills, both of Sacramento.

Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. today at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

John A. Saltsman

A private family memorial was held for Dr. John A. Saltsman, 80, of Woodland, who died of cancer at his Woodland home on Aug. 18, 1998.

Born June 14, 1918, in Ashland, Ohio, Dr. Saltsman had been a Yolo County resident for 28 years and a Solano County resident from 1949 to 1970. He spent his childhood in Long Beach.

Dr. Saltsman was a graduate of University of California, Berkeley, and a 1945 graduate of Chicago's Northwestern University School of Medicine. He was married in South Haven, Mich., on July 4, 1945, and moved to Long Beach to practice family medicine.

In 1949, he moved his family to Vacaville to practice family medicine and was later joined by partners Dr. James H. Kimball and the late Dr. Donald E. Wyrens.

Dr. Saltsman and his familymoved to Woodland in 1970, when he was invited to join the Woodland Clinic to establish a new family practice department.

He retired in 1987 and became more involved with the library literacy program and in classroom assistance in his grandchildren's elementary schools.

Dr. Saltsman was widowed in 1995. While in Vacaville, he and his wife were active in community volunteer efforts including hospital and school boards, and church vestry and altar guilds in Vacaville's Epiphany Episcopal Church and later in Woodland's St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

More recent years had been dedicated to Woodland Library's Rose Club and the public rose garden located at First and Court streets. On his 80th birthday, he was notified the expanded rose garden had been named "John A. Saltsman Garden" in honor of his efforts. The dedication of the garden will be 1:30 p.m. Sept. 26.

Dr. Saltsman is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Mary M. Cook of Rohnert Park, Catherine J. Boykin and Larry Geiger of Lakeside, and Martha R. and Stephen Briggs of Woodland; sons, John P. of San Francisco and James D. of Cazadero; grandchildren, Trisha M. (Boykin) Livingstone and husband David of San Diego, David M. and Joann E. Briggs, both of Woodland; great-grandchildren, Ryan D., Kellie C. and Katelyn A. Livingstone, all of San Diego; sister, Jean S. Donner of Palos Verdes Estates; sisters-in-law, Margaret Maunder and husband, Robert, of Vacaville, and Mary VanBree of Michigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dr. Saltsman was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Ruth A. (McCrimmon) Saltsman, in April 1995.

Contributions can be made to the Woodland Library Rose Club endowment fund, c/o M. Elmstrom, 601 Hollister Road, Woodland 95695; or St. Luke's Episcopal Church endowment fund, 515 Second St., Woodland 95695.

Upon his request, Dr. Saltsman's body had been donated to a medical school for research.

Gary Robert Hewitt

Services have been held for Gary Robert Hewitt, 42, who died in a motorcycle accident on Aug. 10, 1998, in Coos County, Ore.

Mr. Hewitt was a graduate of Vacaville High School and had served in the U.S. Army.

He had been a member of Narcotics Anonymous for five years.

He is survived by his sisters, Dorna "Dee" of Dixon and Donna "Doe" of Roseburg, Ore.; brothers and sister-in-law, Frank "Lynn" of Winston, Ore., and Randy and Cindy of Waterport, N.Y.; nieces Sarah and Dorna Faye; and nephews, Joshua, Brian and Kristopher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Trudee.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Taylor's Family Mortuary in Winston, Ore.
