F. Claude Brashears

Funeral services for F. Claude Brashears, 77, of Sacramento will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in East Lawn Mortuary in Sacramento.

Burial will follow the services at East Lawn Sierra Hills Memorial Park.

Mr. Brashears died Oct. 4, 1998, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Sacramento.

Born on May 14, 1921, in Claude,  Texas, Mr. Brashears entered the Army Air Corps in 1940 and served in China and India during World War II. He also served in the Korean War.

In August of 1960, Mr. Brashears retired from Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as a lieutenant colonel and moved to Sacramento to be director of support services for California State University, Sacramento. He retired from CSUS after 20 years and became an active member of the Christ Community Church.

The youngest son of 13 children, Mr. Brashears is survived by his second wife, Edith Brashears; a brother, Juan Brashears of Camp Verde, Ariz.; sister, June Gilliland of Williamsburg, N.M.; daughter, Peggy Kay Nelson of Vacaville; stepdaughter, Kathleen Marie Tumminelli of Citrus Heights; and two step-grandchildren, Travis Rockwell Dyer and Jessica Dyer, both of Citrus Heights.

Mr. Brashears was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Kathryn Brashears in 1981.

Jim Quillen

Funeral services for Jim Quillen, 79, of Vacaville will at 1 p.m. Thursday in Dixon Community Church.

The Rev. Wesley Nordman will officiate. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Quillen died Oct. 6, 1998, in Vacaville after a short illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1919, in California, he was retired from Rideout Hospital in Marysville, where he was chief of X-ray. Mr. Quillen also was an author, writing "Alcatraz From the Inside" and appearing frequently as a guest author at Golden Gate Park.

He is survived by his wife, Leone of Vacaville; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Mike Routheau of Dixon; mother-in-law, Lillian Killbourn of Vacaville; and two grandchildren, Mikki and Shauni Routheau of Dixon.

Visitation is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. today at the McCune Garden Chapel.

Peter Reeves Edwards

A celebration of life service for Peter Reeves Edwards, 56, of Fairfield will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Suisun Congregational Church in Suisun City.

Born Oct. 24, 1941, in  Washington, D.C., Mr. Edwards died Oct. 5, 1998, in Fairfield.

He lived in Statesville, N.C., for several years before moving to Vacaville in 1993. He moved to Fairfield in 1995. He lived in  Washington, D.C., for most of his childhood. He earned a bachelor's degree from Carson-Newman College and a master's degree in Christian education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

After taking the position of minister of Christian education at two large churches in Statesville, he turned his attention to teaching elementary school. He served with distinction for many years for the Iredell County, N.C., public school system, where he received the Jaycees Teacher of the Year Award.

Mr. Edwards was widely read, loved to sing in the church choir and served as a Stephen Minister for Faith United Methodist Fellowship. He also spent many hours putting together elaborate puzzles and attending to his many tropical fish aquariums. He also loved, and will be remembered for, sending many greeting cards.

He is survived by his mother, Theodora R. of Vacaville; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Judith of Fairfield, Charles and Christine of Darlington, S.C.; a nephew, five nieces and three grandnieces.

Memorial contributions can be made to NorthBay Hospice or Meals on Wheels.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fairfield Funeral Home.

John and Erlinda Ponce

A Mass of Christian Burial for John and Erlinda Ponce of Vacaville will be held 10 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vacaville.

Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

The Rev. Anthony Maio of the church will officiate.

Mr. Ponce, 68, and Mrs. Ponce, 66, died in Lodi from injuries in a car accident on Oct. 4, 1998.

Born March 14, 1930, in Westmorland, John Ponce was a retired contractor.

Born Feb. 7, 1932, in Riverside, Erlinda Ponce was a homemaker.

Both were members of St. Mary's church and former members of Las Families Unidas.

They lived in Vacaville 24 years.

The couple are survived by daughters and sons-in-laws, Eva and Al Valadez and Beatrice and Jose Castro; daughter, Olivia; sons and daughters-in-law, Abel and Anna, Anthony and Norma and Adam and Roberta; son, Thomas; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Mrs. Ponce also is survived by her mother, Manuela Torrez of Vacaville.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today in the church.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today, also in the church.

McCune Garden Chapel is handling arrangements.

Ruth Ellen Whalley

A private inurnment will be held at Fairmont Memorial Park for Ruth Ellen Whalley, 81, of Fairfield.

Mrs. Whalley died Oct. 4, 1998, in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born Nov. 17, 1916, in Chico, she lived in Fairfield more than 38 years. Mrs. Whalley was a third-generation Californian. She graduated from Armijo High School in 1934 and attended California State University, Chico. From 1935 until 1960, she lived in Sacramento and then moved to Fairfield with her husband, Jack Whalley. She worked in the Fairfield Printing Co., which she established with her husband, until her retirement in 1987.

Mrs. Whalley belonged to the Sutter Lawn Tennis Club in Sacramento, the Intercommunity Hospital Guild, and Grace Episcopal Church in Fairfield.

She is survived by sons, Thomas of Vallejo and Robert of San Francisco; niece, Barbara Green of Fairfield; granddaughters, Lisa Silva of Salinas and Jill Buchanan of Boston, Mass., and three great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Mildred Barnes and her husband.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace Episcopal Church, First and Kentucky streets, Fairfield 94533.

Leland Roger Jeffery

Services for Leland Roger Jeffery, 54, of Davis will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Valley Free Evangelical Church, 5063 Maple Road in Vacaville. Burial was private in Davis.

Born Sept. 17, 1944, in Fairfield, Mr. Jeffery died Oct. 6, 1998, at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento.

A pioneer in the soil stabilization industry, Mr. Jeffery owned and operated Lee Stabilization Co. in Woodland. He was also the president of a trucking company that supplies trucks for the construction industry.

He was active in the Valley Evangelical Free Church, and was an active member in the Promise Keepers. He was also an avid San Francisco 49ers fan and enjoyed boating and water activities.

He is survived by his wife, Janice of Davis; son, Alexander of Davis; daughter, Elizabeth of Davis; father, Vernon and his wife, Susan, of Fairfield and mother, Helen Anderson of Fairfield; brothers, Ashley of Vacaville and V. Philip of Jacksonville, Ore.

Memorial contributions can be made to Valley Evangelical Free Church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Home.

Pauline Nola Keck

Graveside funeral services for Pauline Nola Keck, 71, of Doyle will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Keck died Oct. 2, 1998, at her home after a brief illness.

Born on July 10, 1927, in Bristow, Okla., Mrs. Keck lived in Vacaville from 1946 until 1984, when she moved to Doyle. She was a homemaker all her adult life.

Mrs. Keck is survived by daughters, Elaine Montgomery of Shongaloo, La., and Sandra Cowan of Doyle; sons, Glen of Vacaville and Robert and Danny of Doyle; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by the Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Don McKinney

A memorial service for Don McKinney, 55, of Vacaville, will be 2 p.m. Monday in McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville. Inurnment will be private.

Born Feb. 22, 1943, in Richmond, Ky., he died Oct. 9, 1998, in Martinez after a long illness.

Mr. McKinney was a longtime Nut Tree associate and was a past president of the Vacaville Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing and camping.

Mr. McKinney is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Larry Perkins of Vacaville; sisters, Mae Conner, Ann Kidder and Dody, all of Kentucky; mother, Beuhlah of Kentucky; and grandchildren, Shawnee and Joey Perkins of Vacaville.

A memorial contribution may be made to the Stan Foster Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 6359, Vacaville 95696.

Ann Elizabeth Rettinger

A Catholic Prayer Service for Ann Elizabeth Rettinger, 89, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Interment will be at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born Sept. 9, 1909, in Cleveland, Mrs. Rettinger died Oct. 7, 1998, at Fairfield Health Care Center.

A resident of Fairfield for 57 years, Mrs. Rettinger graduated from St. Vincent's High School in Vallejo and attended Dominican College in San Rafael.

She work for Pacific Telephone as a chief operator until 1950. She then worked as a dispatcher for the Solano County Sheriff's Department for five years until 1955. She worked with the Solano County Library as a senior clerk from 1962 to 1970, when she retired.

She is survived by her husband, Howard of Fairfield; son and daughter-in-law, Leland and Cathryn O'Dell of Fairfield; grandson, Gary O'Dell of Fairfield; granddaughter, Pamela Byrne of Fairfield; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Northern California, P.O. Box 1824, Sacramento 95812.

Clifford S. Whitt

Funeral services for Clifford S. Whitt, 81, of Fairfield will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Travis Air Force Base Chapel Center.

Chaplain Arron  Jones will officiate. Interment will be at Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery in Virgilina, Va.

Mr. Whitt died Oct. 6, 1998, at Sunrise Health Care following a long illness.

Born Oct. 9, 1916, he had lived in Fairfield for 36 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran who worked in radar maintenance retiring as a first sergeant with 23 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II and Korea and is remembered as a loving father, grandfather and husband.

Mr. Whitt is survived by his wife, Georgette Whitt of Fairfield; son, Dennis of Fairfield; daughter, Darlene Palmer of Silver Spring, Nev.; sisters, Rosemond Walker and Thelma Puckette, both of South Boston, Va.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1652 W.  Texas St., No. 110, Fairfield or the Diabetes Society, 817 Missouri St. No. 4, Fairfield.

Leland Woodrow Boles

A Masonic funeral service for Leland Woodrow Boles, 82, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at McCune Garden Chapel in Vacaville.

Mr. Boles died Oct. 8, 1998, at his home following a long illness.

Born July 13, 1916, in Santa Rosa, Mr. Boles was raised in San Francisco and Placerville. He was a graduate of El Dorado High School in Placerville.

Mr. Boles moved to Vacaville in the early 1940s and worked as a mechanical engineer at Basic Vegetable Products for 40 years before retiring in 1982.

He was an avid deep-sea fisherman and a volunteer for the Vacaville High School athletic department for many years. He also raced boats with his brother for many years in the 1940s.

He was a member of F&AM No. 134 and Eastern Star No. 28 of Vacaville for 50 years. He was a past member of SIRS No. 106, Vacaville Volunteer Fire Department, Solano County Firefighters Association, Northern Powerboat Association, Winters Boat Club, Vacaville C.B. Club and the Vacaville Coin Club. He was a former member of the board of directors of the Vacaville Quarterback Club and the Sacramento Speedboat Association.

Mr. Boles is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lorell of Vacaville; son, David of Vacaville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Aliene Hodge of Tulsa, Okla., and Don and Ruby Hook of Little Rock, Ark.; sisters-in-law, Neva Caplener of Vacaville, Maxine Wallace of Little Rock, Ark., and Bernice Boles of Vacaville; brother-in-law, Opie Wallace of Merced; nephews, Rod Boles of Vacaville, Gordon Boles of Sacramento, Harold Swane Caplener of Morgan Hill and Ron Caplener of Vacaville; niece, Diane Abreu of Vacaville; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lester "Curley" Boles of Vacaville.

Ronald George Snow

A Catholic Prayer Service for Ronald George Snow, 56, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Tuesday in Nadeau Family Funeral Home in Vacaville.

Full military honors will follow.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate.

Private inurnment will be in Greece.

Born Jan. 28, 1942, in Jasper County, Ind., he died Oct. 8, 1998, in VacaValley Hospital after a long illness.

Mr. Snow was an Air Force master sergeant for 22 years and retired in 1986. He was a Vietnam War veteran and had been awarded the Bronze Star.

Mr. Snow also worked two years for the U.S. Postal Service until his illness.

He also received an associate's degree from Solano Community College in 1986 in business administration and science.

And he was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.

Mr. Snow is survived by his wife, Renee F.A.; daughter, Natalie Hull of San Antonio; son, Ronald P. of New Mexico; brothers, Keith of Rensselaer, Ind., and Bill of Canyon Lake,  Texas; sisters, Jean Hansen of Rensselaer, Sally Hohn of Kentland, Ind., Diane Overton of Watseka, Ill., Nora Sokolow of Albion, Mich., Dorothy Long of St. George, Utah, Anita Duncan of Manotowish Waters, Wis. and Linda Pluta Snow of Rensselaer; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
