Elsie Foon

Funeral services for Elsie Foon, a resident of Suisun for 60 years, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home, 1850 W.  Texas St., Fairfield.

Burial will follow in Rockville Cemetery.

A native of Honolulu, Hawaii, Mrs. Foon lived among the fruit orchards her family owned and operated in Suisun since the 1930s.

She is survived by her husband, Henry; brother, Wah Quon Leong of Honolulu; sisters, Sau Yee Chong of Honolulu, Fanny Au of Los Angeles and Jane Leong of Oakland; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Gerald Lee Miller

Funeral services for Gerald Lee Miller, 72, of Vacaville will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chapel of the Mission Bells of the Wilson and Kratzer Mortuaries in San Pablo.

Burial will follow at Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond.

Mr. Miller died of cancer on Oct. 17, 1998, at a Vallejo hospital.

Born on Sept. 23, 1926, in Johnson, Tenn., he was a resident of Contra Costa County for 40 years and moved to Vacaville a month ago.

He worked for 35 years as a warehouseman for Oakland Naval Supply and was a member of the Church of Christ in El Portal.

He is survived by his daughters, Terri Whalen of Dixon and Jane Wilkinson of San Jose; and brother, Robert Miller of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte L. Miller.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.

Mildred Thompson

Funeral services for Mildred Thompson, 80, a longtime city clerk and finance director for the city of Dixon, were held Oct. 19 at the First Christian Church in her hometown of Blair, Neb.

Pastor David E. Ludwick officiated. A private cremation ceremony will be held later this week.

Mrs. Thompson died Oct. 16, 1998, in a Blair nursing home after a long illness.

Born on Aug. 31, 1918, in Blair, she moved to Dixon in 1946 and returned to Nebraska three years ago.

She served in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps during World War II. She served as city finance director and later was city clerk until she retired. She was also a member of the Dixon Community Church and treasurer of Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by her niece, Darlene Jensen of Kennard, Neb., many other nieces and nephews and several friends in Dixon.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Memorial contributions can be made to the First Christian Church, 205 S. 20th St., Blair, Neb., 68008 or Meals on Wheels in Dixon.

Vaughn L. Williams

Private memorial services are being planned for Vaughn L. Williams, 74, of Vacaville.

Burial will be at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Gustine.

Mr. Williams died Oct. 15, 1998, at Sunrise Care Center of Fairfield after a short illness.

A native of McLeansboro, Ill., he lived in Vacaville for 22 years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 24 years of service.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Lou Ann and Marlowe Oberti of Suisun and Barbara and Charles Capp of Fairfield; granddaughters, Virginia and Teresa Oberti and Elizabeth Capp; brothers, Earl and Gaylord Williams of McLeansboro.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia.

Betty Robinson

Funeral services for Betty Robinson, 78, of Vacaville will be in Virginia.

Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk, Va.

Born Feb. 2, 1920, Mrs. Robinson died Oct. 18, 1998, in Fairfield.

Mrs. Robinson is survived by her son, Don Paetzold of Virginia; daughters, Roberta Wood of Virginia, Veronica Crosley of North Carolina, Betty Jeffcoat and Marianne Griggs of Florida, Regina Strand of California and Grace Brenneman of Vacaville.

Arrangements are under the direction of McCune Garden Chapel.

Norman T. Petersen

Funeral services for Norman T. Petersen, 84, formerly of Dixon, will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Chaplain Jim Howarth of the California Highway Patrol will officiate.

Mr. Petersen died Oct. 17, 1998, in Napa after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 23, 1914, in San Francisco, he lived in Dixon from age 4 until 1960, when he moved to Napa, his residence for the last 36 years.

He was a Dixon police officer before joining the state Highway Patrol, where he retired after 29 years of service. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge of Napa.

He enjoyed building model railroads and traveling across the country with his wife in their motor home. His biggest love was boating.

Mr. Petersen is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth of Napa; daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Bob Rogers of Vacaville; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the California Highway Patrol Widows and Orphans Fund, 2030 V St., Sacramento 95818.

I. Worth Salsman

Memorial services for I. Worth Salsman, 82, of Rockville will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rockville Chapel, 4221 Suisun Valley Road. Officers from the Masonic Lodge No. 55 F & AM will officiate. Inurnment will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Born June 21, 1916, in Dallas, Mr. Salsman died Oct. 20, 1998, in Fairfield.

A resident of Rockville for 65 years, Mr. Salsman worked as a ship builder for the U.S. Civil Service at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 31 years, retiring in 1971. He worked in shop 11, chipping and welding. He also owned and operated a chicken ranch and a peach ranch, and was a partner in a California gold mine.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 55 F & AM, Ben Ali Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Knights Templar of Vacaville No. 38, Cryptic Masons of California, King Soloman's No. 29, Royal Arch Masons Solano No. 43, Montezuma Shrine Club of Vacaville No. 266, and was a founding member and past president of Rockville Homeowners Association.

He was raised in Clayton, N.M., and was an avid deer hunter, fisherman and gardener, as well as a loving husband, father and friend.

Mr. Salsman is survived by his wife, Caroline of Hollister; daughters, Elizabeth Wilson of Anchorage, Alaska, and Nina Gillette of Hollister; sons, Alan of Juneau, Alaska, and Marion of Sunnyvale; sisters, Eileen Randol and Beulah Tews, both of Napa, Bette Calcanini of West Covina, Barbara Bedward of Mesa, Ariz; brothers, Thomas of Napa and Melvin of Long Beach; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Jesse Jr.

Memorial contributions can be made to any Masonic organization.

Arrangements are under the direction of Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Eli 'Jim' Franklin

Funeral services for Eli "Jim" Franklin, 66, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church in Fairfield.

The Rev. John Duncan will officiate. Burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery.

Mr. Franklin died at home Oct. 19, 1998, after a long illness.

Born Dec. 10, 1931, in Montgomery, Ala., he attended school and graduated from East High School in Youngstown, Ohio, and continued his education at Solano Community College.

A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, Mr. Franklin served in the U.S. Air Force and the federal civil service for 42 years before retiring in 1994. Also, he and his wife, Carol, owned and operated The Franklin/Wiley Care Home.

Mr. Franklin was the acolyte director and lay reader for Grace Episcopal Church and served two terms on the vestry as junior warden.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons: Carlnel Wiley of Concord, Christopher Wiley of Fairfield, Alvin of Montgomery, Ala., and Bobby of Denver; brothers, Eddie and Birch of Youngstown, Ohio, and Willie of Montgomery, Ala.; sister, Mary L.  Jones of Montgomery, Ala.; and 11 grandchildren.

A visitation is scheduled 5 to 7 p.m. today.

Kathleen Gray

Funeral services for Kathleen Gray, 56, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will follow at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born April 25, 1942, in Wheeling, W.Va., Mrs. Gray died Oct. 21, 1998, in Vacaville.

She lived in Vacaville for the past 25 years and worked for Westamerica Bank for the past 25 years.

She is survived by her husband, Rick of Vacaville; son, Gregory Knoroski of Vacaville; sister, Barbara Bowman of Napa; brother, Jerry Mirzak of Loveland,  Colo.; grandson, Trevor Knoroski of Vacaville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday with a rosary at 7 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

William Henry Laverenz

Graveside services for William Henry Laverenz, 82, of Vacaville will be Tuesday at Maple Leaf Cemetery in Oak Harbor, Wash.

Born Oct. 25, 1915, in Denton, Kan., Mr. Laverenz died Oct. 22, 1998, in Vacaville.

He retired as a maintenance mechanic from American Home Foods Co. in 1977. He lived in Oakland prior to moving to Vacaville.

He is survived by his son, Robert of Oak Harbor; daughter, Sharon Epps of Palm Desert; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was the son of Henry and Emma Laverenz.

Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. today at Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

George Sidney Bender

Funeral services for George Bender, 78, of Vacaville are 2 p.m. today at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma.

Father Pat Coyne of Holy Ghost Fathers of Ireland will preside. Burial will follow in Cypress Lawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Bender died Oct. 21, 1998, in Vacaville after a long illness.

Born June 16, 1920, in Newark, N.J., he resided in Vacaville in the 1930s, moved to San Francisco until 1990, then returned to Vacaville for eight years.

As a youngster, Mr. Bender lived in Mix Canyon, where his father built a house that still exists. Attending a one-room schoolhouse, Mr. Bender had fond memories of his early days in Vacaville.

A veteran of World War II, he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1945. He was a technical sergeant in communications and took part in campaigns in China, India and Burma.

For 39 years, Mr. Bender worked for the General Brewing Corp. in San Francisco and later Royal Crown Cola for five years, retiring as a packaging supervisor in 1985. He was a former member of Bottlers Union Local 293 and a member of the Independent Order of Foresters.

Mr. Bender loved gardening, fishing, crossword puzzles and the San Francisco 49ers. He was an avid deer hunter. He was also a loving husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife, Alice, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 11, 1998.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons and daughter-in-laws, Gary and Eileen of Vacaville, and Ron and Sue of Benicia; and grandchildren, Kevin of Arizona, Michelle and Mark of Vacaville, and Chris and Nicole of Benicia.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Ruth Bradanini, 290 Fruitvale Road, Vacaville 95688, or NorthBay Hospice, 1800  Pennsylvania Ave., Fairfield 94533.

Robert W. Holbert

Graveside funeral services for Robert W. Holbert, 73, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rockville Cemetery in Suisun City. The Rev. Stan Sanderson will officiate.

Mr. Holbert died Oct. 16, 1998, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1925, in Neosho, Mo., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and worked at the Black & Decker retail store in Vacaville, where he lived for 54 years. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Mr. Holbert was an avid fisherman and woodworker and enjoyed race cars.

He is survived by his wife, Jennie of Vacaville; daughters, Sharon South of San Jose and Susan Shaver of Southern California; stepdaughter, Marla Shapiro of Vacaville; son, Randy Holbert of Southern California; stepson, James Robinson of Hesperia; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
