Finn Skovgaard-Petersen
81, passed July 1, 2011.
Born April 19, 1929, in Denmark, he came to Big Bear Valley in 1998 and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Steve Bircsak
On June 30, 2011, Steve Bircsak passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was a loving husband to Judy, a devoted father to Zoltan and Attila, a good friend to many and an outstanding athlete.
Steve was born in Hungary in 1946 and came to America in 1967.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He was well known for his great sense of humor and for making everyone laugh at his jokes.

Jane Louise Haldeman-Cooke
A contagious smile, a spirit of hope and determination, and a heart filled with love and laughter that overwhelmed each moment -- all of these characterized a beautiful person who peacefully transcended into the arms of the Lord on July 1, 2011. Jane Louise (Campbell-Haldeman) Cooke was born to Walter and Lorraine Campbell in 1956. Her early years were spent in Upland,  Calif., where she graduated from Upland High School in 1974. Upon graduation, she relocated to Big Bear Lake where she took a position working for Continental Telephone Company. As her career flourished and she was honored with several outstanding achievement awards, her life also was enriched with the birth of her only child, Jason, who was the center of her life. In the early 1990s, she found her life's love, Kevin Cooke, whom she married in 2004. Her profession and a new life with Kevin brought her to the Palm Springs area where she continued to thrive in a career with Verizon. It goes without saying that she embraced her professional life with passion and dedication leading up to an early retirement. As she entered retirement, Jane built a life around family and friends who came to cherish Jane's enchanting smile, her kind soul and a special sensitivity for others before self. All were blessed to have known her. No matter what was going on, Jane always called just to say, "I love you." Her father, Walter, precedes Jane in death. She is survived by her devoted and loving husband, Kevin, of Palm Springs; her beloved son, Jason Haldeman and Nancy Planellas, along with Jane's precious grandson, Jasper, of Big Bear Lake; stepchildren Ryan, Aaron, and Kelly; grandchildren Ian, Blaise, Katie, Ashley, Morgan, Sophia and Alexa; her mother, Lorraine of San Luis Obispo; her sisters Bonnie Woodson (Santa Barbara), Sue Miller-Born (Redding) and Sandra Burgess (Pinon Hills); and numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins and good friends. A celebration of life will be held at Big Bear Community Church in Big Bear Lake on July 16, 2011, at 2 p.m. Jane would want everyone to live their lives with joy and laughter in her memory.

Mark A. Turner
51, passed away on June 27, 2011.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1960 in Quebec, Canada, to Eugenie Francoeur and Harold Turner.
He passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his side just after his affairs were in order.

Frank J. Bylin
92, passed away June 15, 2011. He was born July 2, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., and lived in Big Bear City for the past 24 years. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Corps from 1940-1945 earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a POW with the 8th Air Force shot down over Germany during WWII. He was a Merchant Seaman for 28 years. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Escondido and loved golfing. Frank is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eunice; daughter, Kathleen Michell (Bruce); sons, David (Linda), Stephen (Bonnie), Daniel (Debi), and Christopher; sisters, Genevieve and Helen Bylinowski; brother, Andrew Bylinowski (Helen), and 7 grandchildren. Military Honor services were rendered on June 29, 2011, at Riverside National Cemetery. Arlington Mortuary, Directors. (800) 275-4648.

Rachel Ulrich Lingren Thiessen
a 25-year resident of Big Bear City, went to be with her Lord on June 8, 2011, in Mission Viejo. She was 93. Rachel was a retired Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school teacher. She outlived her first husband, Leslie Lingren, who died in 1979, and her second husband, Menno Thiessen, who died in 2006. Rachel is survived by her children, Roger Lingren (San Francisco,  Calif.) Paul Lingren, Ph.D. (Mission Viejo,  Calif.), Virginia Edwards (Seattle,  Washington). Step-Children Bob Thiessen (Big Bear City,  Calif.), Carol Harris (Cedar Hill,  Texas), and Jan McCarthy (Big Bear City,  Calif.). Additionally, she is survived by 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Bob Armond
Bob moved to Big Bear from Fountain Valley back in 1991 with his wife, Debbie, and their two daughters. He purchased Mercer Tire from the original owner Lee Mercer when it was in its original location just south of AM/PM and the feed store. He quickly learned the business and took it from a one employee business to its hay-day back in the mid '90s with as many as eight employees when it moved to its current location on Big Bear Blvd. in Big Bear City.

Rachel Ulrich Lingren Thiessen
a 25-year resident of Big Bear City, went to be with her Lord on June 8, 2011, in Mission Viejo. She was 93. Rachel was a retired Los Angeles Unified School District elementary school teacher. She outlived her first husband, Leslie Lingren, who died in 1979, and her second husband, Menno Thiessen, who died in 2006. Rachel is survived by her children, Roger Lingren (San Francisco,  Calif.) Paul Lingren, Ph.D. (Mission Viejo,  Calif.), Carol Harris (Cedar Hill,  Texas), and Jan McCarthy (Big Bear City,  Calif.). Additionally, she is survived by 13 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Marion Arthur “Art” Poland
At the age of 87, Art Poland went to be with our Lord on June 9, 2011.
He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Art was born on Oct. 17, 1923 in Corydon, Iowa, to Donald L. and Geneva M. Poland.

John Murray
Passed away June 12, 2011.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Murray's on Sunday, June 26, at 12 noon followed by a potluck.

Sharyle Grassen
60, passed May 21, 2011.
Born on Feb. 13, 1951 in Toronto, Ontario Canada, she will be sadly missed by her sister and all of her friends in Big Bear.

Ronald B. Keyson
80, was born Oct. 31, 1930, in New York, passed away on Friday, June 10, at home in Big Bear under hospice care after five weeks in the hospital following cancer surgery.
He died peacefully holding his wife, Judy's, hand and in the presence of his caring hospice nurse.
He has been courageously fighting cancer for over nine years and was an inspiration to all.

Ronald Gwinnett Sherwood
beloved husband, cherished father and adored grandfather, left this world on June 6, 2011, at the age of 80 after a lengthy illness with diabetes and heart disease.
Ron remained a cheerful, steady presence in his family home, which continued through to the end showing the warmth and humor that characterized his life.

Bob Armond
54 years of age. Bob moved his family to Big Bear Lake in 1990. He purchased Mercer Tire from the original owner Lee. After 7 years Bob moved his family up to Oregon for a small period of time eventually relocating in Thousand Oaks,  Calif., around 1998. Bob began a hobby known as para-motoring. After falling in love with his new hobby, Bob went on to become an instructor and offer lessons; and over the next few years built the largest para-motor company on the West Coast. Bob sold his company and eventually moved to the Palm Springs area where he continued to pursue his love for flying and became known as an expert in the para-motoring field.

Charles Edward Castle
55, passed May 26, 2011.
Born Dec. 27, 1955, he was a native of San Diego,  Calif., and moved to Big Bear Valley in 2001 with his wife, Tina Castle.

Sharyle Grassen
60, passed May 21, 2011.
Born on Feb. 13, 1951 in Toronto, Ontario Canada, she will be sadly missed by her sister and all of her friends in Big Bear.

Paul Eugene Nemo
51, passed May 9, 2011, at the Murrietta Hospital.
Born Jan. 21, 1960, in Hollywood,  Calif., he was a 5-year resident of the Big Bear Valley.

Ann Louise Silfies, C.P.A.
(nee Chouinard), 55, passed away on May 27, 2011, after braving a debilitating 2 year illness. She is survived by her husband, Terry, of 35 years; sons Christopher and Sean; four grandchildren: Michael, Zachary, Ariel and Lukas Silfies; mother Marjorie Chouinard of Bracebridge, Canada; sister Janet Chouinard of Escondido and brother Patrick Chouinard of Bracebridge, Canada. Louise will also be missed by her nephews and nieces, Michael, David and Alanna Colapietro, Ethan and Sara Chouinard, her aunt Eileen Spring of Baltimore, her business partner Bruce Doucette and her many friends and staff.

Bernadine K. Krueger
66, passed away on May 15, 2011, with her family by her side in Wildomar,  Calif. She was born on June 16, 1944, in Chicago, Ill., to Ernest and Irene Knitter. Bernie graduated from Moorhead State College in Minnesota. Shortly after moving to California, Bernie worked for Rockwell International for almost 15 years. She then worked at Hughes Aircraft where she met her late husband Cliff Krueger. After being a resident of Big Bear City for many years, Bernie became the president of the Big Bear City Business Association. She also played many active roles in other local associations and organizations as well. In addition, Bernie also found a joy in becoming a successful entrepreneur by opening and operating her store, Pottery Plus, for many years.

Belinda Ann Antrobus
28, was born Feb. 18, 1983 and passed May 23, 2011.
Kind hearted, loving person, she is survived by her loving family and lovely friends.
So sad we had to part, but God has you in His arms and we have you in our hearts!

Richard J. McCarthy
74, passed away on May 22, 2011, from final stage Parkinson's Disease. Richard served in the Air Force in Alaska during the Korean War. He and his wife, Carol, owned a cabin in Big Bear City since 1980. Richard transferred to the Big Bear Lake Post Office in 1983 where he served Moonridge and Boulder Bay residents until he retired in 1992. Richard then decided on a second career, teaching English, and earned an adult teaching credential from the University of California at Riverside. He was employed by the Bear Valley Unified School District until 2007. Richard also volunteered at the Big Bear Lake Library in the Literacy Program. In March 2010, Richard and Carol moved to Laguna Woods. Richard leaves behind his wife Carol; sister Judi; sister-in-law Fran; nephew John; great nephew Devin; niece Sharon and great niece Erika. He was welcomed to heaven by his brother, Jim. The family would appreciate donations to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, NY. 10008-0780
