Jack Anton Horst

A burial at sea with full military honors will be conducted for Jack Anton Horst, 74, of Fairfield.

Born March 3, 1924, in Moline, Ill., he died Oct. 21, 1998, in NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield after a long illness.

He lived in Fairfield's Paradise Valley for one year.

Mr. Horst served 26 years in the Navy, originally appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy in 1943.

He graduated in 1947 and received a naval science degree and became a lieutenant commander. He served on the USS Iowa, two aircraft carriers and an ammunition ship.

He completed submarine school and served on the USS Bream and the USS Carp.

In 1953, he transferred to the Naval reserves and retired in 1984 as lieutenant commander.

He then worked for Convair in the San Diego aerospace industry, as well as at Martin Marietta in Denver.

During civilian retirement beginning in 1973 he managed personal investments.

Mr. Horst is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Cincinnati; daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Paul Quattropani of Tuscon, Ariz., and Carla and Don Buchanan of Burbank; sons and daughters-in-law, Al and Susan of San Mateo, Dan of Citrus Heights and Christopher of Cincinnati; also, brother, Bob of Florida.

Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield is handling arrangements.

Neat Houghton Sawyer

Funeral services for Neat Houghton Sawyer, 75, of Dixon will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Fellowship Church in Dixon.

The Rev. Ellis Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Silveyville Cemetery.

Mr. Sawyer died last Oct. 20, 1998, in Sacramento following a brief illness.

Born Oct. 6, 1923, in Sacramento, he was a retired civil service worker from Travis Air Force Base and former Dixon farmer for 25 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping and flying and was a life member of the American Legion of Dixon.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Mary of Dixon; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Dana of Sacramento and Donald and Sue of Davis; daughter, Carrie Lynn Sawyer of Dixon; sister, Sally  Taylor of Hawaii; brother, Jim of New York; brother and sister-in-law, Allen J. and Olga of Dixon; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sons, William Ton, Michael Fulton and John Sawyer and a brother, John Bruster Sawyer.

A visitation is scheduled from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Arthur Henry Tooby

Funeral services for Arthur Henry Tooby, 81, of Vacaville will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The Rev. John Duncan of Grace Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Born June 17, 1917, in Eureka, Mr. Tooby died Oct. 22, 1998, at VacaValley Hospital.

A resident of Vacaville for 20 years, Mr. Tooby was a cattle rancher in Humboldt and Solano counties for 60 years. He owned and operated Tooby Brothers Livestock that was started by his family in 1913.

Mr. Tooby graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1941, and was director of the Federal Land Bank Association for more than 30 years. He was director of Solano County farmlands and Open Space Foundation from 1986 to 1994. He also was a past director of Solano County Fair.

He was a Fairfield resident from 1944 to 1978.

Mr. Tooby also was a member of the California Cattlemans Association, the California Wool Growers Association, the San Francisco Commonwealth Club, the Scottish Caledonian Society, and he served on the vestry of Grace Episcopal Church in the 1950s.

He is survived by wife, Maxie of Trinidad; ex-wife, Mary; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Alex Aiu of Suisun Valley; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Christine of Suisun Valley; daughter, Bebe Tiger of Fairfield; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Ruby Irene Toth

Memorial services for Ruby Irene Toth, 73, of Fairfield will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Inurnment will be at Fairmont Memorial Park.

Born May 2, 1925, in Supply, Ark., Mrs. Toth died Oct. 24, 1998, in Fairfield.

A resident of Fairfield for eight years, she came to California in 1944. She was a nurse's aid at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica for seven years, and was an executive secretary for Bank of America for 10 years. She also worked at Gold Hanger Clothing Store as a sales clerk.

Mrs. Toth volunteered at NorthBay Medical Center for four years. She treasured time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda of Van Nuys; daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Randy Murphy of Vacaville; sister, Lola Davis of New Berlin, Wis.; grandsons, Wayne Murphy of Vacaville, and Bill and Ryan Murphy of Sacramento; great-grandson, John Murphy of Sacramento.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society Solano Chapter, 1652 W.  Texas St., Suite 110, in Fairfield 94533.

Seth Ryan Wilson

Funeral services for Seth Ryan Wilson of Travis Air Force Base will be 1 p.m. Monday at Liberty Christian Center, 1307 Oliver Road in Fairfield.

Burial will be at Fairfield-Suisun Cemetery. Pastor Richard West will officiate.

The newborn died Oct. 21, 1998, at David Grant Medical Center.

Seth is survived his parents, Michael and Cynthia of Travis; and brother, Trenton of Travis.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fairfield Funeral Home.

Annabelle 'Annie' Lee Billings

No funeral services are planned for Annabelle "Annie" Lee Billings, 60, of Fairfield.

Inurnment will be private.

Born March 25, 1938, in Parsons, Kan., Mrs. Billings died Oct. 25, 1998, at David Grant Medical Center after a long illness.

She lived in Fairfield for 18 years and was a homemaker for 34 years.

She is survived by her husband, C.D. of Fairfield; daughters, Judy Lynn Sharp of Merced and Patti Jo of Fair-field; sons, Ralph Edward Osburn of New Mexico, Richard Franklin Osburn and Robert Lewis Osburn of Lawrence, Kan.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Bowman in 1976; mother, Virgie Bowman in 1989, and daughter, Jayne Ann in 1957.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association, 105 Astrid Drive, Pleasant Hill, 94523.

Antonio Gomez

Funeral services for Antonio Gomez, 64, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.

Interment will be in the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Born June 13, 1934, in Jalisco, Mexico, Mr. Gomez died Oct. 24, 1998, in Concord after a short illness.

He lived in Fairfield for 36 years.

He was a construction worker and belonged to union Local 326. He loved music, boxing, fishing and softball.

He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Guadalupe Society.

He is survived by his wife, Martha of Fairfield; daughter, Irene of Fairfield, daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and Salvador Salcedo of Los Angeles; son, Victoriano of Fairfield; son and daughter-in-law, Jose and Alma Gomez; brother, Jose of Stockton; and nine grandchildren.

Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with a 7 p.m. rosary recital at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Selma C. Knight

Funeral services for Selma C. Knight, 93, of Dixon will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Dixon Community Church.

Pastor Wes Nordman will officiate.

Burial will be private at the Parkview Cemetery in French Camp.

Mrs. Knight died Oct. 25, 1998, in Dixon.

Born Dec. 5, 1904, in Livermore, she lived in Stockton from 1916 to 1980, when she moved to Dixon.

She worked for 15 years for the Better Business Bureau of Stockton and participated in a number of community groups, among them the American Business and Professional Women of Stockton, the Rebekah Lodge of Stockton and the Presbyterian Church in Stockton.

After moving to Dixon, Mrs. Knight became involved with the Senior Citizen Center, the Dixon Women's Improvement Club, the Dixon Meals on Wheels program and the Dixon Community Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Janice Knight of Red Bluff; niece, Gladys Hanna of Dixon; nephew, Lawrence Stoeven Jr. of Woodland; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Donations can be made to the Dixon Community Church or the Yolo Hospice, P.O. Box 1014, Davis 95617.

Migsa I. Ortiz

Private funeral services will be held for Migsa I. Ortiz, 48, of Vacaville.

Mrs. Ortiz died Oct. 23, 1998, at David Grant Medical Facility after suffering a terminal illness.

Born Sept. 16, 1950, in Vieques, Puerto Rico, she moved to the area in 1986.

She worked for the Solano County Sheriff's Department for 11 years. She also enjoyed cooking, camping, picnicking, walking on the beach and many other outdoor activities.

Mrs. Ortiz is survived by her husband, Rosendo of Vacaville; son, Rosendo Jr. of Vacaville; father, Benjamin Cruz of Orlando, Fla.; brother, Benjamin Cruz Jr. of Angleton,  Texas; sisters, Magdo Cruz of Berlington, N.J. and Sonia Cruz of Brownsville, N.J.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Church, 350 Stinson Ave., Vacaville.

Norman F. Schmierer

Memorial services for Norman Frederick Schmierer, 69, of Suisun City, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. Inurnment will be private.

Born May 12, 1929, in Wessington Springs, S.D., Mr. Schmierer died Oct. 26, 1998, in Suisun City.

Mr. Schmierer served in the U.S. Army and in the Korean conflict. He worked as a senior accounting manager of the Laborers' Funds administrative office of Northern California.

He is survived by his nieces, Kathy Blain of Lynchburg, Va., and Beverly Babb of Harrison, Mich.

Arthur E. Sullivan III

A memorial service for Arthur E. Sullivan III, 20, of Suisun City will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Travis Air Force Base Chapel Center.

Born Sept. 8, 1978, in Jacksonville, Ark., he died Oct. 16, 1998, in Tulsa, Okla.

He was a 1997 graduate of Vanden High School, had been employed by Target Stores and was a student at Spartan School of Aeronautics.

Mr. Sullivan is survived by his parents, Arthur and Kay Sullivan of Suisun City; sisters, Tammy of Vacaville and Tracy of Tulsa; paternal grandmother, Kathleen of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.; maternal grandparents, John and Marion Ramsden of Marietta, N.Y., and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

The Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home/Crematory in Tulsa is handling arrangements.

Col. Kenneth E. Brown

Funeral services for Col. Kenneth E. "Rocky" Brown, 83, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Valley Evangelical Free Church.

Pastor Dave Sotelo will preside. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.

Col. Brown died Oct. 27, 1998, in Vacaville after a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 23, 1915, in Clarendon,  Texas, he lived in Vacaville for nine years. After serving in the United States Air Force for 24 years, he worked as a Test Pilot for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in San Jose and spent 20 years working with youth as a part of the Police Athletic League of San Jose.

Col. Brown enjoyed golfing and gardening.

Col. Brown is survived by his wife, Mary "ET" of Vacaville; son, Michael of Sacramento; daughters, Barbara Valver of Paris, France, Vickie Schuck of Potomac, Md., Tanya Pedigo of Alabama and Tami Begasse of Los Gatos; eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Valley Evangelical Free Church building fund, 5063 Maple Rd., Vacaville 95687.

Arrangements are by McCune Garden Chapel.
