Sophie Marie Reddish

A Mass of Christian Burial for Sophie Marie Reddish, 73, of Vacaville will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly of St. Joseph's Catholic Church will officiate. Burial will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born March 19, 1925, in Baltimore, Mrs. Reddish died Nov. 10, 1998, in Fairfield.

A Vacaville and Solano County resident for 34 years, she retired after 20 years of civil service. She was a member of the Senior Citizens club of Vacaville, the Military Retired Wives Club of Travis Air Force Base and was also a volunteer there for several years. She enjoyed her garden and was an avid bingo and card player.

Mrs. Reddish is survived by her husband, Harry of Vacaville; daughter, Cheryl Lukens of Tampa, Fla.; sons, Harry of Vacaville, Thomas of Chico and Michael of San Diego; three brothers and four sisters, all from Baltimore; three granddaughters and one grandson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at McCune Garden Chapel with a rosary at 7 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Jack Starkey

There will be private services and private inurnment for Jack Starkey, 82, of Vacaville.

Born Oct. 16, 1916, in England, Mr. Starkey died Nov. 11, 1998, in Vacaville.

A machinist for 20 years, he served in World War II in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1939 to 1945. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Oakland and enjoyed ice hockey.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Pam of Vacaville; sister, Hazel Houston of Toronto; brother, Harold of Horsehead, N.Y.; grandchildren, Mari-Carmen Ralls of Las Vegas, Ana-Marie Tucker of Prattville, Ala., and Robert Olson of Vacaville; great-grandchildren, Craig Olson of Vacaville, Brandon Tucker of Prattville, Ala., and Daniele and Michael Ralls of Las Vegas.

Memorial contributions can be made to NorthBay Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Vaca Hills Chapel.

Marvin O. Carter Jr.

A memorial service for Marvin O. Carter Jr., 43, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Monday in McCune Garden Chapel.

Family and friends will preside. Burial will be private in Arizona.

Mr. Carter died Nov. 10, 1998, after a long illness.

Born Feb. 3, 1955, at Travis Air Force Base, he lived in Vacaville for 10 years. He was a mechanic for many years, working most recently for Westinghouse Air Brake Co.

Mr. Carter loved car racing.

Mr. Carter is survived by his father, Marvin O. Carter Sr. of Tucson, Ariz.; companion, Mary Rose of Vacaville; stepdaughters, Mickie and Judy Malone of Vacaville; two grandsons; and five granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1979.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Ruth Bradanini, 290 Fruitvale Road, Vacaville 95688.

Brian Vincent Grant

Memorial services for Brian Vincent Grant, 36, of Los Angeles will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Cooley and Riolo Mortuary in Los Angeles. Inurnment will be in Los Angeles.

Mr. Grant died Oct. 22, 1998, in the hospital.

Born Oct. 7, 1962, in Fort Bragg, N.C., he was a resident of Los Angeles. He worked for Los Angeles College as a sports trainer.

Mr. Grant is survived by his father, John Grant of Suisun; sisters, Brenda Wiley of Vallejo, Rosalyn and Stephania, both of Sacramento, and Sharon of Suisun; and brother, Murphy Davis of Los Angeles.

Edward P. Herman

Memorial services for Edward P. Herman, 81, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Vaca Hills Chapel.

The El Cerrito Albany Lodge No. 686 F&AM will officiate. Inurnment will be in Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Herman died Nov. 8, 1998, in Vacaville Convalescent Hospital after a short illness.

Born Feb. 9, 1917, in Fresno, he had lived in Vacaville since 1993. He worked as fire chief for the city of El Cerrito for 34 years, was a second lieutenant in the Air Force and served in World War II and Korea. He was past president of California Fire Chiefs Association, American Legion and Rotary Club.

Mr. Herman loved camping, fishing and was active in Boy Scouts.

Mr. Herman is survived by his former wife, Virginia of Vacaville; daughters, Donna Brouch of Vacaville and Teri of Orinda; son, Mike Herman of Pleasanton; grandchildren, Kristin and Patrick of Pleasanton and Jacob Brouch of Vacaville; three sisters in Fresno; and several nieces and nephews.

Contributions can be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento 95817.

Joseph R. Howell

Graveside services for Joseph R. Howell, 68, of Fairfield will be 1 p.m. today at Rockville Cemetery. Interment will follow.

Mr. Howell died Nov. 10, 1998, at home after a long illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1930, in Clear Lake, La., he moved to Fairfield 30 years ago. He was in the Army from 1951 to 1953. He worked at Travis Air Force Base for the last 20 years as a pneumatic systems mechanic. For the last five years he worked in the tool crib at Travis.

Mr. Howell enjoyed custom knife-making.

Mr. Howell is survived by his wife of 27 years, Dale of Fairfield; daughter, Christy Snyder of Fairfield; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Janet of Vacaville and Joseph and Christine of Florence, Ore.; son, Steven of California; brother-in-law, David Nemeth of Hanford; niece, Colleen Arias of Bull Head City, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

Contributions can be made to American Cancer Society, 1652 W.  Texas St., No. 110, Fairfield 94533.

Arrangements are by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Charles William Jones

Graveside services for Charles William Jones, 74, of Modesto will be 2 p.m. Monday in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Mr.  Jones died Nov. 6, 1998, at Doctors Medical Center of natural causes.

Born April 12, 1924, he was a native of Chico and lived in Modesto since 1997. He was in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 and a crane operator for 38 years at Mare Island Naval Shipyard.

Mr.  Jones is survived by his wife, Ann of Modesto; sons, Dennis Michael of Oakland, Allen Lee of  Washington and Norman Scott of Vacaville; daughters, Sandy Keathley of Modesto, Marie Barker of Pollock Pines and Donna Peterson of Arizona; sister, Alta Chambers of Chico; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are by Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel in Modesto.

Michael Jay Roberts

A memorial service for Michael Jay Roberts, 38, of Vacaville will be today at McCune Garden Chapel. Interment will be a private military burial at sea with full honors.

Mr. Roberts died Nov. 9, 1998, in Vacaville.

Born March 5, 1960, in Savannah, Ga., he had lived in Vacaville since 1986. He served in the Navy as a gunner's mate for four years. More recently, he had been a welder at water filtration manufacturers J.R. Schneider Co. of Benicia for the past nine years.

Mr. Roberts was very active in the softball leagues of Vacaville.

Mr. Roberts is survived by his parents, Roy and Marlene of Vacaville; sisters, Vicky of Sacramento, Karen and Angie, both of Vacaville; sister and brother-in-law, Jenny and Martin Angier of Vacaville; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Patty of Sacramento; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in honor of Michael Jay Roberts Memorial Fund at West America Bank, 401 E. Monte Vista Ave., Vacaville; account number 2101258321. This will be used to sponsor a co-ed softball team in Vacaville.

Sophia H. Schanning

A private burial for Sophia H. Schanning, 71, of Fairfield was held Nov. 12, 1998. Interment was private at Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Schanning died Nov. 4, 1998, at Sunrise La Mariposa Convalescent Hospital after a long illness.

Born Jan. 1, 1927, in Germany, she lived in Fairfield for 10 years.

Mrs. Schanning was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1992.

Arrangements were by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Ellen Mary Smithgall

Memorial services for Ellen Mary Smithgall, 91, of Fairfield will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Fairfield Presbyterian Church.

Pastor Robert Grove of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church will preside. Inurnment will be private.

Mrs. Smithgall died Oct. 27, 1998, at NorthBay Medical Center after a short illness.

Born Jan. 5, 1907, in Alexander, N.Y., she lived in Fairfield for four years. She worked as a schoolteacher for the Buffalo School District in Buffalo, N.Y., for 15 years and was a homemaker from 1943 to 1998.

She enjoyed bowling, which she continued until the age of 83, and was an avid Buffalo Bills football fan.

Mrs. Smithgall is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Roy Pimentel of Fairfield; son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Karen of Rochester, N.Y.; granddaughter, Jill of New York City; and grandsons, Doug of Rochester and R.J. Pimentel of Fairfield.

George Eugene Minkel

Funeral services with full military honors for George Eugene Minkel, 67, of Fairfield will be 10 a.m. Monday at Grace Episcopal Church.

The Rev. John Duncan will officiate. Interment will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Mr. Minkel died Nov. 11, 1998, in Fairfield after a short illness.

Born June 27, 1931, in New York, he lived in Fairfield for 34 years. He served in the Air Force from 1951 until 1971 and retired in the grade of technical sergeant.

Mr. Minkel worked in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District for 18 years as a custodian, retiring in 1991. He was an active member in veterans organizations, American Legion, Reams Post 182, Suisun; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans; Grace Episcopal Church, Fairfield; and served the church as junior warden and lay reader.

Mr. Minkel is survived by his wife, Pat of Fairfield; daughter, Deborah Johnston of Fairfield; son, Peter of Fairfield; sisters, Pauline Weltzer and Jean Burns, both of New York; grandchildren, Matthew, Garrett, Edward and William Johnston, all of Fairfield.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace Episcopal Church, First and Kentucky streets, Fairfield 94533.

Francis E. Bernhart

Memorial services for Francis E. Bernhart, 89, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at McCune Garden Chapel.

Pastor Gaylon Wamble of Church of Christ will officiate. Interment will be at the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mr. Bernhart died Nov. 11, 1998, in Fairfield after a brief illness.

Born Aug. 18, 1909, in  West Virginia, he lived in Vacaville for 43 years. He retired from the U.S. Navy after 23 years of service and retired from the California Medical Facility after 16 years. He also was in the Fleet Reserves for many years.

Mr. Bernhart is survived by his daughter, Ruth Ann of Vacaville; stepdaughter, Collett Stacy of El Cajon; stepdaughter-in-law, Revae Heppanen of Lakeport; numerous step-grandchildren and cousins and dearest friend, Marveline Crist of Vacaville. He was predeceased in death by his wife, Gean, in 1991.

Edwin Ray Martin

Funeral services for Edwin Ray Martin, 79, of Vacaville will be private.

Chaplain Keith Knauf will officiate. There also will be a private ceremony at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born June 5, 1919, in Phoenix, Mr. Martin died Nov. 12, 1998, in Vacaville.

Mr. Martin joined the Army in 1942 and was a member of the 1st Battalion of Darby's Rangers. He earned campaign ribbons for service in Tunisia, France, Sicily and Italy.

He fought in the Korean War and retired with 21[th]1/2 years of active service. After retirement, he joined Safeway Corp. until his second retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; and by Rosemary  White, Martha Thompson, Robert Martin, Patricia Noland, Marilyn Straub, James Straub, Bridget Straub and Megan Mitchell; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by wives, Virginia and Margaret.

Memorial contributions can be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of Vaca Hills Chapel.
