Patricia "Pat" Brower
March 19, 1941 - February 23, 2004
Patricia "Pat" Brower, 62, of North Las Vegas, died Feb. 23.
She was a retired administrative assistant for the city of North Las Vegas.
Pat attended school in Northern California until moving to Coronado, graduating with the class of 1959.
Pat was a "gifted" artist and a friend to all that knew her. How can anyone forget her lovely smile, those beautiful eyes? She will be missed by many.
Pat is survived by her mother Peggy Godwin; her son Rick Rosa and his two lovely daughters.
Services were held in Sacramento and again March 18 in Las Vegas. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Pat's name.
Barbara M. Hopkey
Barbara Mary Hopkey, age 81, a long-time Coronado resident, died April 15 at the San Diego Hospice Inpatient Care Center.
She was born in Kanawha, Iowa in 1922, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel Stillson Larson. Raised in rural Iowa, she attended public school and graduated from high school where she met her future husband, Elmer Hopkey. They married in 1940.
Elmer and Barbara Hopkey farmed their acreage in north central Iowa, near the town of Alexander, for a period of 40 years. As was typical on Midwestern family farms, Mrs. Hopkey was an equal partner with her husband, sharing the chores, joys and hardships of agricultural life. She became an expert manager, maintaining the books, negotiating contracts and overseeing the business side of the farm. The couple's three children, Dixie Olk (now of Latimer, Iowa), Janice Covington (of Coronado) and Susan Willette (deceased) were born on the farm and soon shared the duties of maintaining the land.
The Hopkeys retired from active farming in 1975, moving to Coronado, where their daughter, Jan, was a registered nurse and Navy wife. Their daughter, Dixie and son in law, Butch Olk, took over the farm. Mr. Hopkey died in 1998, the fifty-eighth year of his marriage to Mrs. Hopkey.
Mrs. Hopkey was active in the Coronado Senior Center and enjoyed recreational vehicle camping. She became resident grandmother to generations of children in her Coronado neighborhood. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of San Diego.
She is survived by her daughters Dixie Olk of Latimer, Iowa and Janice Covington of Coronado, as well as grandchildren Jennifer Olk, Steven Willette, Rick Willette, Jill Covington, Josh Covington and Anne Covington.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, 92103.
Catherine Ann Hatz
Catherine Ann Hatz, known as "Nan," lived and worked in Coronado for over 25 years where she raised 4 children, all of whom went through the Coronado Schools.
For most of those years she worked at Union Bank on Eighth and Orange. She passed away on April 20. She is survived by husband, John C. Hatz of Chula Vista; Judy Tassey of Atwater; Catherine Murphy of San Diego; Mike Hall of Carlsbad and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on Monday, May 3 at 11 am at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Seventh Street and D Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association through their website, www.sanalz.org or at 4950 Murphy Canyon Road, Suite 250, San Diego CA 92123.
Margaret Gresham Hougabook
October 25, 1919 - March 14, 2004
Margaret Gresham Hougabook, a graduate of Coronado High School and the mother of the first African-American child born at the Naval Air Station North Island hospital, died March 14 in Jamaica, New York.
She was born on Oct. 25, 1919 in San Diego, one of the seven children born to James Fountain and Tallie Ludlow.
The Ludlow family worked for very wealthy people, including an heiress to the Kelloggs family and Wallis Simpson, later the Duchess of Windsor.
Margaret's parents moved to Coronado in 1919 and Mr. Ludlow opened his own business, a cleaning, pressing and dye shop on Orange Avenue, three doors from the Old Coronado Theatre. He also used his Page touring car to transport Hotel del Coronado guests to Agua Caliente in Tijuana.
The Ludlows lived at 943 Olive, until 1920, when they bought a home at 801 H. The H Avenue home was in the family until it was sold in June, 1973.
Margaret grew up and received her education in Coronado. Her brother Paul was a high school football star, so popular that neighbors drove by the house blowing their horns in celebration.
After Margaret graduated from high school, she met and married U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Thomas Morrison.
They had three children, Barbara Christian, Gloria Jean and Thomas Jr. Gloria is believed to have been the first African-American born at the North Island hospital. When Mr. Morrison decided to stay in the military at the end of World War II, the couple divorced.
Margaret graduated from the Philadelphia School of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked many years doing what she liked best, helping and healing the sick. She practiced her skills at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mary Immaculate Hospital, and retired in 1979 from Trump Pavilion in Jamaica, Queens. Prior to her retirement, she met and married John Hougabook on November 20, 1958. Good years were spent together until he passed in 1988. After she moved into Rochdale Village Building 5, the lobby was always beautifully decorated at Christmas time . You knew Margaret had been there because she was well-known for her creative works of arts and crafts and pretty, crafted Christmas trees.
Margaret was exceptionally talented; her love for music enabled her to join Calvary Baptist Church on September 3, 1980, where she became a devoted member of the Gospel Choir. She was also a member of the Allen Senior Center Choir. Margaret often entertained at senior center programs with her lip singing, belting out the songs made famous by the great, late Mahalia Jackson. One of Margaret's favorite songs was "Soon I Will Be Done With the Troubles of the World."
Margaret will always be remembered and missed for her dedicated community service as an entertainer. She was also an active member in the seniors volunteer program. As her heath began to fail, Margaret became a permanent resident of Monsignor Fitzpatrick Nursing Home in February 1999.
Margaret's motto was "People should learn to get along and live together in peace, accept and help each other and live together in peace without bringing someone down."
She leaves to mourn her passing: two daughters, Barbara Christian Ortiz and Gloria Jean Morrison; one son, Thomas Morrison, Jr.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Constance Morrison; one son-in-law, Bill Ortiz; two granddughters, Mrs. Bilita Sloan and Mrs. Yvette Casanova; four grandsons, Thomas, Darryl, Charles and Leslie; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Ludlow of Silver Spring, Md., and George Ludlow of Louisville, Ken.; one sister, Louise Reed of Compton; two sisters-in-law, Sara Ludlow of San Diego and Susie Ludlow of Silver Spring, a host of nieces and nephews too numerous to mention; friends and acquaintances.
Reverend A. Morgan Parker, Jr.
March 4, 1936 - April 16, 2004
Reverend A. Morgan Parker, Jr. died at his home of 5 years in Coronado.
Morgan was a retired Navy Chaplain after serving in Naval hospitals, Marine Corps bases, Naval air stations and most notably aboard the USS Midway at the close of the Vietnam conflict. His ministry also included United Methodist pastorates in Byfield, Mass., Chula Vista and Oak View. He was the founding pastor of the San Luis Rey Valley United Methodist Church in Oceanside. In all he served in ministry 40 years.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Annette Parker; four children David, Philip and James Parker and Deb Kramer; and thirteen grandchildren.
Services will be held April 24 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 11 am.

Rose Callahan
February 25, 1914 - April 2, 2004
Rose Callahan, wife of former Mayor Pat Callahan, died at her home on April 2, surrounded by all of her children.
She was 90.
Rose Walburga (Cleary) Callahan was born in Dardanelle, Ark. Feb. 25, 1914, and raised in Thomas, Okla. She graduated from high school in 1932, and went on to St. Francis School of Nursing, where she received her RN in 1936.
She moved to Los Angeles and worked at Cedars of Lebanon. She remained there until 1939, when she took her nurse's training in another direction, becoming a stewardess. Moving to Alameda, she was voted Miss United Airlines and was their campaign advertisement girl in many publications, including Life magazine.
While a stewardess, Rose met future husband, C.P. "Pat" Callahan on a blind date. He was a young submarine commander aboard the USS Barb, which was attached to the Pacific Fleet. They were married Nov. 17, 1943, in New London, Conn.
They moved to Coronado in 1949, making a home and raising their six children. For the next 50 years, Rose was active in the Sacred Heart Altar Society, the Coronado Democratic Club and numerous bowling leagues.
She is survived by her children; Kathleen Fairbank, Madelyn Reitz, Pat Callahan, Rose Mary McNeely and Theresa Stacy, all of Coronado; and Ann Yates of San Diego; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church on April 16 at 2 pm with a reception
immediately following at Sacred Heart Parish Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation be made to the American Cancer Society.
