Lucille Terry Spengler

By Victor Balta/Staff Writer

Vacaville lost one of its most outstanding citizens when Lucille Terry Spengler died on Aug. 28, 1999, at VacaValley Hospital. Miss Spengler was very active in the community during and after her 30-year career in real estate.

A memorial service for Miss Spengler, 93, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville. The Rev. Stephen Leonetti will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Miss Spengler was born on July 27, 1906. She retired Dec. 31, 1976, from her real estate career.

She suffered a stroke in November 1977 from which she never fully recovered. She had lived at Winsor House convalescent home since December 1985 and was described by people there as a very nice person.

"She was a really nice and lovely lady who had a very elegant grace about her, in spite of her illnesses," said Ana Martinez, Winsor House office manager. "And there was a huge amount of people who came to visit her and sent her cards."

Miss Spengler had an impact on the lives of many people in Vacaville, doing anything she could to make a contribution to someone's life.

Ana Apaka, a longtime friend, said Miss Spengler helped many people find places to live after they came home from World War II and had difficulty finding housing.

"She has helped so many people," Apaka said.

Miss Spengler was named outstanding citizen of the year in 1964 for her efforts toward obtaining toll-free telephone service between Vacaville and Travis Air Force Base. She was also once the grand marshal of the Fiesta Days parade.

Miss Spengler was an avid member of the Vacaville Soroptomist Club, serving as the president in 1973 and 1974. Joyce Suihkonen, a member of the Soroptomists, met Miss Spengler 11 years ago and said she considered herself a good friend.

Suihkonen said Miss Spengler started the club's service program at Winsor House for a Christmas celebration 26 years ago, long before she would end up living there.

"In the last years, when we'd come to visit her," Suihkonen said, "she'd always have her Soroptomist pin on in the audience."

Miss Spengler was also a devoted member of the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Vacaville.

"She was a very generous person," local Chamber of Commerce director and former councilman Gary Tatum said. "Even back when we first arrived in town, every kid in that church who graduated was remembered or recognized by Lucille.

"Even in her final years," he added, "when she was obviously in poor health, she always had a very positive spirit. I'd say she was less concerned about herself than (others)."

She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Native Daughters of the Golden West, women of the Moose, The Saturday Club and Chamber of Commerce. She is survived by many friends.

Memorial contributions can be made in Miss Spengler's name to Epiphany Episcopal Church, 300 West St., Vacaville, 95688.
