Margaret Lenore Stevenson Mathews

Memorial services for Margaret Lenore Stevenson Mathews, 87, of Vacaville will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Valley Baptist Church in San Rafael. Pastor Martin Blanton will officiate.

Mrs. Mathews died Aug. 23, 1999, at Fort Miley Veterans Hospital in San Francisco.

Born Aug. 4, 1912, in Williamson, W.Va., she moved to Vacaville in 1997. She was a Mustang, one of the first female U.S. Marines to receive a commission in World War II.

She was a high school teacher in San Francisco and Marin County. She was a past president of the Women Marines Association of both the Redwoods and San Francisco chapters. She was a member of the Marin County Rose Society, and she was a charter member of the Marin County Red Cross.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Women Marines Association headquarters in care of Mary Sherron, WMA Treasurer, 13139 Sydney Road, Dover, Fla., 33527-5968.

James Jayson Morse

Memorial services for James Jayson Morse, 28, of Vallejo will be 2 p.m. Sept. 18 at Oasis Four Square Church in Elmira. Pastor Jack Duitsman will officiate.

Mr. Morse died Sept. 5, 1999, in a drowning accident.

Born April 21, 1971, in San Pablo, he moved to the area 12 years ago. He worked as a paint technician for Pride Industries for one year. He loved camping.

Mr. Morse is survived by his parents, James and Linda of Vacaville; uncle and aunt, Larry and Wanda Cossey of Fairfield; aunt, Dorothy  White of Vallejo; brothers, Timothy Douglas of Fairfield and Michael Robert of Vacaville; and cousins, Eric Cossey of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Dave Edwards of Fairfield; and grandmother, Nina Cossey.

The Morse family wishes to extend special thanks to Vaca Valley Christian Life Center, Vaca Hills Chapel, Yolo County Sheriff's Department, Oasis Four Square Church and Hilltop Community Church of Vallejo.

Frances Phillips

No formal services will be held for Frances Phillips, 89, of Fairfield. Private family services will be at Live Oak Cemetery in Live Oak. Interment will be private.

Ms. Phillips died Sept. 8, 1999, in Fairfield.

Born May 6, 1910, she moved to Fairfield two months ago after having lived in Live Oak for 31 years. She worked at the arsenal in Benicia during World War II and was self-employed in the hotel, restaurant and thrift store businesses. She enjoyed fishing and sewing.

Ms. Phillips is survived by her niece, Carol Waldren of Fairfield; great-nieces, Tami Waldren of Fairfield, Dayna Asbury of Vallejo and Gia Waldren of Fairfield; great-nephew, Tony Waldren of Vacaville; 15 great-great-nieces and -nephews; and three great-great-great-nieces and -nephews.

Dolores Stidhem

Funeral services for Dolores Stidhem, 77, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. today at California Funeral Services in San Francisco. Burial will be private.

Born June 26, 1922, in San Francisco, Mrs. Stidhem died Sept. 1, 1999, in Vallejo after fighting lung problems for 12 years.

Mrs. Stidhem is survived by her sons, William C. and Darrel M.; grandchildren, Steven E., Donald M., William L. and Mary Lee Lavery; and eight grandchildren.

J.L. 'Pete' Hodges

Funeral services for J.L. "Pete" Hodges, 65, of Vallejo will be 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service in Napa. The services will be under the auspices of Benicia Masonic No. 5 Blue Lodge. A graveside service will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Roseville Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and Sunday.

Mr. Hodges died Sept. 7, 1999, in Vallejo.

Born on March 6, 1934, in Stotts City, Mo., he lived in Sacramento and Roseville before moving to Vallejo in 1971. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served from 1950 to 1954, and was a decorated Korean War veteran. He was employed by Plumber & Pipefitting Local No. 447 in Sacramento and No. 343 in Vallejo for 44 years and was a member of Benicia Masonic No. 5 Blue Lodge and Scottish Rite Valley of Oakland.

Mr. Hodges is survived by his children, Marilyn of Vacaville, Deborah Mack of American Canyon, Phyllis Charlene Bolden of Rancho Cordova, Malynda J. Riley of Del Rio,  Texas, and Stanley of American Canyon; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lina, and sister, Violet Joann Johnson.

Frank Madison Murphy

Funeral services for Frank Madison Murphy, 81, of Vacaville will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Fairfield First Assembly of God Church.

Pastor Robert Clay and the Rev. Darrell Murphy will officiate. Visitation will be 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Church. Burial will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Mr. Murphy died Sept. 10, 1999, at his home in Vacaville.

Born on Aug. 12, 1918, he moved to Vacaville 14 years ago after having lived in Sunland for 30 years, where he was a member of the Open Bible Church.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for Gene Velling as a salesman. He was a member of Fairfield First Assembly of God Church, P.T. Boater's Association, and was a loving father and husband.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Mildred of Vacaville; sons and daughters-in-law, Marty and Charlotte of Fairfield and Darrell and Judy of Canby, Ore.; and daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Haskell Ledbetter of Vacaville. He also has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

William Baird Kuehn

Funeral services for William Baird Kuehn, 83, of Vacaville will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Father Benedict DeLeon of St. Mary's will officiate. Inurnment will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Born Jan. 25, 1916, in Philadelphia, Mr. Kuehn died Sept. 10, 1999, at Vaca Valley Hospital.

Mr. Kuehn moved to the area 27 years ago. After a long career with the Air Force, Mr. Kuehn was a civil servant at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 27 years.

He was a member of the Italian Catholic Federation, a veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans' of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Kuehn is survived by his wife, Gertrude Mary of Vacaville.

A rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Vaca Hills Chapel.

Sterling LaMont DuBose

Funeral services for Sterling LaMont DuBose, 31, of Fairfield, were held Monday at Solano Christian Fellowship in Fairfield.

The Rev. Curtis DuBose officiated.

Mr. DuBose died Sept. 5, 1999, at NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield.

Born on Oct. 4, 1967, in Youngstown, Ohio, he lived in Fairfield for 17 years.

He worked for the city of Vacaville for 13 years and was most recently employed by KOL Containers. He was a graduate of Vacaville High School.

Mr. DuBose is survived by his wife, Kim Jennings of Fairfield; daughter, Dominique of Fairfield; son, Sterling of Fairfield; mother, Carol of Youngstown, Ohio; sisters, Danielle and Janelle of Sacramento; brother, James Anderson Sr. of Suisun; 13 nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Mathew.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Juanita Anderson, 1106 Nancy Court, Suisun.

Arrangements were by Solano Valley Morturary.

Fred A. Gallanthine Jr.

Funeral services for Fred A. Gallanthine, Jr., 76, of Green Valley, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Rockville Cemetery in Suisun. The Rev. Allen Schoonover of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church will preside. Burial will be private. Visitation at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home will precede the service.

Mr. Gallanthine died Sept. 12, 1999, at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Vallejo after a short illness.

Born on Jan. 9, 1923, in Sioux City, Iowa, he lived in Green Valley for 27 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946 and the U.S. Army Reserves until 1952. He retired after 30 years at Kaiser Permanente as a chief refrigeration engineer. He enjoyed golf, woodworking and his motor home. He was a member of the Paradise Valley Golf Club, the Kaiser Golf Group and the Napa Kennedy Golf Group. He was a past member of St. Marks Lutheran Church.

Mr. Gallanthine is survived by his wife Shirley Anne of Green Valley; daughter, Sheryl Howard of Reno; son, Steven of Carmichael; sister, Betty Langford of Sioux City, Iowa; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association, Redwood Empire Chapter, P.O. Box 844, Santa Rosa 95402.

Charles James Garrett

Memorial services and inurnment will be private for Charles James Garrett, 49, of Sacramento.

Mr. Garrett died Sept. 9, 1999, in Sacramento after a long illness.

Born on July 16, 1950, in San Francisco, he lived in Sacramento County for six years. He enjoyed reading, bowling and cooking.

Mr. Garrett is survived by his sisters, Joanne St. Clair-Quigley and Desiree Esler and Eileen M. Garrett, all of Vacaville; brothers, Kirk of Anderson, Sean of Oregon and Vincent of Oakland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.

Elaine Ruth James

No formal services have been scheduled for Elaine Ruth James, 71, of Fairfield. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Roseville at the First Presbyterian Church. Inurnment at the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno will be private.

Mrs. James died Sept. 10, 1999, in Fairfield following a long illness.

Born on Nov. 13, 1927, in Barnsdall, Okla., she lived in Fairfield for two years. She received a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and worked at the San Jose Mercury News. She was editor of the officer's wife club newsletter. She also worked in the shoe department at the Liberty House for 10 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Roseville, where she served as a deacon and bell ringer. She loved shopping, traveling, entertaining and spending time with her grandchildren.

Mrs. James is survived by her fiance, John Oscar Peterson of Sacramento; son and daughter-in-law, John  Taylor and Sherry James of Santa Cruz; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Thomas Smith of Lakeway,  Texas; brother-in-law, Edward James of Vallejo; sister-in-law, Betty James of Vallejo; three granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews and one grand-niece.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 515 Sunrise Ave., Roseville 95661.

Roger Ruud

Funeral services were held for Roger Ruud, 71, of Spring Lake Park, Minn.

Mr. Ruud died Aug. 22, 1999.

Mr. Ruud is survived by his sons and daughters-in law, Richard and Roxi, and Morris and Diane; son, Charles; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Fred Topei, JoElla Kath and Bill, Cindy Olsen and Bob and Trisha and Brad Dykstra; daughters, Sandra Hughes and Cheryl Keene; and brothers, Wayne and Dale.

He also left eight grandsons, 10 granddaughters and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lida; father, Morris; mother, Esther; brother, Bernard; and sister, Patricia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association.

George Solinski

A memorial service for George Solinski, 73, of Vacaville will be 11 a.m. Friday at McCune Garden Chapel. Pastor Dean Pense of Crossraods Christian Church will preside. Inurnment will be at Vacaville Elmira Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Solinski died Set. 11, 1999, in Vacaville after a long illness.

Born on July 26, 1926, in Erie, Penn., he lived in Vacaville for 46 years. He served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. He retired after 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and went to work at Mare Island, where he retired after 19 years. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW chapters in Vacaville and was an avid mechanic.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Mr. Solinski is survived by his wife of 49 years, Zaida of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jody of Redding; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Dick Crawford of Vacaville; daughter, Sandra of Vacaville; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Dan Poplin of Vacaville; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to donor's choice of charity.
