Lucy Hill Coon
January 24, 1937 - February 27, 2009
Lucy Hill Coon, 72, amazing wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, left this world on Feb. 27 surrounded by her family on a new quest to find the perfect beach in heaven.
Lucy was born Jan. 24, 1937 in Baltimore and raised in Belmont, Mass. After marrying Bainy and spending a short time in Washington, they were stationed by the Navy in Coronado where they would raise their children over the next 30 years and begin her love affair with the ocean.
Besides being deeply connected to the ocean, Lucy was a devoted mom, giving her all to her five children. Whether it was taking her five children swimming at the Hotel del Coronado, serving as team mom on the various Little League teams, going to football games and softball games, or taking us to the beach to go surfing, she was always there for us.
As a young girl, she often dreamed of the empty beaches of Mexico and finally realized her dreams after Bainy received a vacation bonus to Mazatlan. After that, there was no stopping her in her quest for the perfect beach. Knowing they could not spend the rest of their lives in mainland Mexico, they decided to enjoy the beauty of Mexico by purchasing a house just south of Rosarito Beach. Rancho Santini became their second home and a launching pad for deeper excursions to the south. Over the years, many people were able to share Bainy and Lucy's love for Mexico as they received anyone to their house with open arms, cold beers and frosty margaritas. No one was ever turned away from Rancho Santini and were always made to feel at home due to Lucy's welcoming heart. It was often said, “Your mom is my new best friend,” a phrase repeated over and over through the years.
Lucy developed extraordinarily close relationships with the people in her life, especially her grandchildren who adored her outgoing, relentless and loving nature.
For the last 20 years, both she and Bainy spent a large portion of the year living in a modest bungalow on the beach in Zihuatanejo, where they developed “ambassador” status. From there, their travels would take them back to Boston and Texas to visit with family and friends.
Music always filled the air wherever she went: jazz, country, Dixieland, she loved them all and shared it with all around her.
Over the years, rain or shine, one could hear her shimmering voice echo, “Come on down, the sun's coming out! I can't wait to see you!”
Above all else, Lucy was a fiercely loyal mother, wife and sister, standing her ground to end no end when it came to family.
Lucy was predeceased by her parents Dr. William R. Hill, Jr. and Marguerite Smith Hill of Winchester, Mass. and her sister Joanne Monahan. Lucy is survived by her loving and devoted husband Bainbridge, married for 51 years; her sons Billy (Paula;) and their children Austen; Ryan; Sophie; and Andrew; Timmy; his daughter Chelsea; Tommy (Marisa;) their children Samantha and Emilie; daughter Katie Kachigian ( Michael;) and their children Karly and Collin; and son Jimmy (Amy) and their children Hannah and Charlie. She leaves behind her brothers William R. Hill III; Charles Judson Hill; and sister Susan Rooney; along with numerous nieces and nephews and the many friends in Zihua, Rosarito, Coronado, Boston, Austin and around the world. A special thanks goes to Cha Cha Napoli for her kindness and help in Lucy's final days.
A paddle-out is planned for 10 a.m. April 5 at the main beach parking lot at the Coronado Shores beach followed by a celebration of life from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Shores' Roeder Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Coronado Public Library in Lucy's name.
Paul Lynwood Currey
July 9, 1921 - March 14, 2009
Paul Lynwood Currey was born July 9, 1921 in Taylor County, W.Va. He died peacefully at home, his family by his side, on March 14 in Coronado at the age of 87, following a brief illness.
Paul grew up in Shinnston, W.Va., and attended Shinnston High School and Fairmont State College. College plans were put on hold when World War II began. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a radar operator on B-18's and B-24's based in Italy.
After the war, Paul returned to college at West Virginia University, then went on to technical training in Louisville, Ky. After graduating, he joined Philco in Philadelphia in the tech. rep. division, then moved on to the naval aviation engineering service unit in Washington as a civil engineer. With NAESU, he later transferred to Bremerton, Wash., then Coronado, where he finished out his career engineering avionics support systems for squadrons on aircraft carriers stationed at North Island.
Paul married Jenora Iverson Parker in November 1961 in San Francisco. They had two sons: Michael Andrew, born May 7, 1965 and Steven Mathew, born May 23, 1966. After a long illness, Jenora passed away of cancer in May 1971.
After meeting on a blind dinner date arranged through mutual friends Shirley Bryan and Lauris Boyer in Coronado, Paul then married Jean Lee Schoch on June 30, 1973, at Harvey Brown Presbyterian Church, in Louisville.
Paul retired from NAESU in 1986. He was very active in his church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Coronado, serving on several committees through the years.
Paul is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean Lee; their sons Michael; and Steven; Michael's partner Calvin; Steve's family: daughter-in-law Sara; granddaughters Annie Leigh; and Julia Michele; Duane and Dottie Carson of La Jolla; Jean and Duane Naugle of San Diego; and Liz Siscowic of San Diego. Paul is also survived by his sister Kathryn Moore; his brother John Currey; brothers-in-law Jack Schoch and Bob Schoch; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, many wonderful friends.
A celebration of Paul's life was held March 21. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Paul may be sent to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 700 D Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118.
Lorene Ashworth Campbell
January 26, 1910 - February 27, 2009
Lorene Ashworth Campbell, age 99 of Nashville, died Feb. 27. She was born Jan. 26, 1910 in Smith County, Tenn.
She graduated from Tennessee College for Women in Murfreesboro, Tenn. in 1933 and taught school at Goodlettsville High School from 1933 - 1938, then moved to Baltimore and San Diego.
After 39 years of teaching, she retired in 1971 from Coronado High School. She liked boating and travel trailering.
Lorene moved back to Tennessee in 1984. She was a member of Tulip Grove Baptist Church.
Lorene was preceded in death by her husband John W. (Jack) Campbell; parents Charlie and Altie Ashworth; sister Dorothy Ashworth; and brothers Fred and Paul Ashworth. She is survived by her brother Ray (Juanita) Ashworth of Camden, Tenn.; sister-in-law Helen (Walt) of Boronda; brother-in-law Jim Campbell of South Carolina; step-daughter Nancy Fleming, M.D.; and many nieces and nephews.
A service was held March 3 with interment at Nashville National Cemetery.
Marilyn Jeanne Edwards McCarty
July 7, 1930 - February 14, 2009
Former Coronado resident Marilyn McCarty, 78, died at her home in Santa Barbara on Feb. 14. She was born July 7, 1930 in Los Angeles to J. Lester Edwards and Katherine McKellar Edwards. Raised in Salt Lake City, she graduated from Salt Lake City East High School and the University of Utah, where she was honored with membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society. She was also a member of Chi Omega sorority. On June 23, 1951, she married William Dukes McCarty. Prior to settling in Santa Barbara in 1962, Marilyn and Bill also lived in Honolulu and Coronado.
A longtime member of the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara, Marilyn took great joy in being on the courts with her fellow members of the Women's B Interclub Team. Marilyn was president of the Santa Barbara Little Gardens Club from 1999 to 2001. Another great joy in her life was acting as a docent at the historical Lotusland estate in Montecito, interpreting the exotic plant collections for visitors. In addition to her volunteerism, her other passion was traveling the world with her children and her friends.
Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Bill in 1980 and her brother Joseph Angus Edwards in 2004. She is survived by her brother John Edwards of Ammon, Idaho; two sons Scott (Jill) of Camarillo; and Stephen (Aimee) of Reno, Nev.; one daughter Kathy, of Rockville, Md.; and grandchildren Connor; Kyle; Kienan; and Colin McCarty of Camarillo; and Kevin; Griffin; and Kayleigh McCarty of Reno.

Thomas Edward Bolger: 1927 - 2009
Thomas Bolger died peacefully at home in Coronado on Feb. 19 from complications of cancer. Heaven will never be the same. Born in Moorhead Minn., he attended St. John's University in Collegeville. After serving aboard the USS Lexington at the end of World War II, he graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology with a degree in electrical engineering.
After college, Mr. Bolger began his wide-ranging career within the Bell System. He excelled as a lineman, service foreman, plant engineer and plant manager. At age 40 he became president of Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle. In 1974 he was assigned as chairman and CEO of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies. He was then appointed executive vice president of AT&T and was a leading figure during the divestiture of the Bell System.
In 1983, Mr. Bolger was elected the founding chairman and CEO of the Bell Atlantic Corporation, one of the “Baby Bells.” He was renowned for his honesty, humor, integrity and drive. Mr. Bolger served on several corporate boards. He was most fond of his work as a member of the board of directors of the National Geographic Society.
Tom Bolger never saw a golf course he did not like. His love and talent for golf took him to some of the most renowned courses in the world. He enjoyed participating in numerous pro-am competitions and fondly recalled playing golf with Arnold Palmer on more than one occasion.
During his life he put down roots in places too numerous to recount but loved Coronado since his first visit in 1990. He was profoundly touched by the community at Sacred Heart parish and enjoyed serving on the board of the Coronado Hospital Foundation in the late 1990s.
The love of his life since high school, Mae Bolger, continues to reside in Coronado. She and his five children, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren mourn their loss with immense gratitude for his life.
Josephine Pelican
July 4, 1921 - February 20, 2009
Josephine Pelican, a resident of Coronado for the past 30 years, passed away at Sharp Coronado Hospital on Feb. 20 after a brief illness.
Josephine was born to Joseph Kumer and Loretta Anderson Kumer in New Rochelle, N.Y. in 1921. She graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx in 1937 and from Hunter College in 1942 with a B.A. After World War II, she married Otto Joseph “Joe” Pelican and raised their family in New York City before relocating to a new home in New Milford, N.J. in 1953. Josephine and Joe Pelican moved to Coronado in 1978 where they enjoyed their retirement until Joe Pelican passed away in 2000.
Josephine is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Robert and Gigi Pelican of Paramus, N.J.; Florence and Dennis Delorenzo of Great Notch, N.J.; Barbara and John Koch of Verona, N.J.; Patricia and Paul Jurkoic of Carlsbad; John and Sarah Pelican of Ann Arbor, Mich.; Richard and Patricia Pelican of River Vale, N.J.; and Francis and Susan Pelican of Rochester, Mass. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren and five step-grandchildren, as well as her sister-in-law Madeline Pelican of Coronado.
Josephine devoted her life to raising her children and was intensely concerned with their well-being and that of her grandchildren. When her children were older she worked as a secretary and as an elementary school teacher. Josephine was keenly interested in writing and literature and was a reliable correspondent with her many family members. While a homeowner, she was an avid gardener and later maintained many potted plants on her lanai.
Throughout her life Josephine Pelican was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oradell, N.J. and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Coronado. A memorial Mass for Josephine was celebrated by Monsignor Jeremiah O'Sullivan on Feb. 24 at Sacred Heart Church.
Her cremated remains will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery
in San Diego next to that of her beloved husband Joe.
