C.H. 'Charlie' Martin

Memorial services for C.H. "Charlie" Martin, 76, of Winters, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Smith's Colonial Chapel in Winters. Burial will follow at Capay Cemetery.

Mr. Martin lost his quest to "shoot his age" in golf and died on Oct. 12, 1999, at his home in Winters after a seven-year battle with leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Born on June 18, 1923, in Marion, Mich., he was an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps. His military career included flying "The Hump" (China-Burma-India), the Berlin Airlift and Air-Sea Rescue.

He was honored by the government by being chosen to pilot the plane that picked up the Apollo 11 lunar landing capsule. He was a veteran of three wars, and his medals include several Distinguished Flying Crosses, including one issued by the Republic of China.

After serving 29 years in the Air Force, he retired to the Capay Valley to become an almond rancher, where he discovered the art of dousing. He doused many successful wells in the area.

He was diagnosed with leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and told at the time he had six months to live. Not accepting such a short amount of time to live, the avid golfer put his heart into the game, notching a hole-in-one, recording a round of 77 and consistently logging 200 rounds of golf in the past seven years at the Yolo Fliers Club.

Mr. Martin is survived by his wife and friend of 53 years, Beverly Nan; daughter and son-in-law, Cathey and Cary Larson of Winters; sons and daughters-in-law, Rocky and Patti of Cotati and Gary and Roberta of Chico; grandchildren, Marla and Max Larson of Winters and Adam, Chris and Patrick of Cotati; sister and brother-in-law, Mabel and Joe Mazzola of Winters; and sister, Vera Sangre of Royal Oak, Mich. He also leaves behind his treasured golfing partners.

In lieu of flowers, it was Mr. Martin's request that people would "just do something nice for someone." Donations can be made to any blood bank, the American Cancer Society or to the Charlie Martin Memorial Fund, care of Yolo Fliers Club, P.O. Box 1366, Woodland, 95776.
