Waunita Garben

A memorial service for Waunita Garben, 68, of Green Valley will be 11 a.m. today at Rockville Presbyterian Fellowship Church.

The Rev. Larry Valardo will officiate.

There will be a private inurnment at Rockville Cemetery.

Born March, 30, 1931, in Kansas City, Kan., Mrs. Garben died Nov. 28, 1999, at home after a long illness.

She lived in Green Valley for 41 years.

She worked as a travel agent for All World Travel for 28 years. She travelled around the world, visiting all seven continents.

She was a member of the Green Valley Country Club and The Women's Golfing Division. She also was a past member of the Intercommunity Hospital Guild.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Arthur of Green Valley; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Vanessa of Fairbanks, Ala., and Arthur E. and Sue of Green Valley; son, Edward of Olympia, Wash.; sisters, Georgia Gregg of Vacaville and Wanda Roebel of Sacramento; brother, Gerald Gregg of Portland, Ore.; grandchildren, Jason, Kerry and Greg, all of Green Valley, and Derek and Christopher, both of Fairbanks, Ala.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Gregg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to NorthBay Hospice, 1200 B. Gale Wilson Blvd., Fairfield, 94533, or American Cancer Society, 1652 W.  Texas St., Suite 110, Fairfield, 94533.

Arrangements are being handled by Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.

Jose J. Garcia

A funeral for Jose J. Garcia, 79, of Dixon will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Dixon. The Rev. Maurice O'Brien will preside. Interment will be at Silveyville Cemetery.

Mr. Garcia died Nov. 29, 1999, in Davis.

Born Jan. 16, 1920, in Guanajuato, Mexico, he had lived in Dixon for 26 years. He worked for Braga farms in Dixon for 15 years and will be remembered as a loving father who set a good example for his children and grandchildren and who cared for everyone he came into contact with.

He is survived by his wife, Maria of Dixon; sons, Guadalupe, Trinidad, Luis, Jesus and Javier, all of Dixon, and Alfredo of Fairfield; daughters, Audelia of Davis, AnaMaria and Elena, both of Dixon, MariaLuz of Sacramento and Juanita of San Francisco; 39 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Milton Carpenter Funeral Home, 569 N. First St. in Dixon.

Elsie Mae Iversen

A funeral for Elsie Mae Iversen, 79, of Fairfield will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at Rockville Cemetery.

Born April 9, 1920, in Gillit Grove, Iowa, Mrs. Iversen died Nov. 26, 1999, in Fairfield after a short illness.

She worked as a telephone operator before becoming a full-time homemaker. Later she worked at Travis Air Force Base as a tailor and an accounting assistant. She was an artist with the sewing machine and loved embroidery, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Her cooking and hospitality were well-known. She was a 50-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Iversen is survived by her husband, Edgar of Fairfield; daughter, Gloria Cantrell of Fairfield; son, Wayne of Carmel; brother, Merle Wyant of Des Moines; grandchildren, Cathi Grove, Cheri Hemenway and Wayne Cantrell, all of Sacramento; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Cantrell and Isaac Grove, both of Sacramento.

Memorial contributions can be sent to Trinity Lutheran School Growth Fund, 2075 Dover Ave., Fairfield, 94533.

Jeanne Marie McGovern

A memorial Mass for Jeanne Marie McGovern, 85, of Vacaville will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1771 Marshall Road in Vacaville. The Rev. Vincent O'Reilly will preside.

Burial will be private in New Melleray Cemetery in Peosta, Iowa.

Miss McGovern died Nov. 29, 1999, at VacaValley Hospital following a short illness.

Born May 4, 1914, in Dubuque, Iowa, she had lived in Leisure Town since 1980.

In 1936, Miss McGovern joined Sears Roebuck. In 1942, she joined the Women's Army Corps, recruiting for 15 months. From there, she was sent to London and Paris for two years with the fiscal director's office of the ETO, where she received the Bronze Star. After the war, she returned to Sears for 20 years, working in the credit department. She joined Whirlpool Corp. for 13 years in credit, retiring as vice president of retail credit in 1979.

She was a member of the Leisure Town Trailer Club, Golf Club, Women's Club and homeowners association.

Miss McGovern is survived by many cousins in the Dubuque, Iowa, area.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund, 1771 Marshall Road, Vacaville, 95687.

No formal visitation is planned. Arrangements are by Nadeau Family Funeral Home.

Lloyd 'Pop' Wheatley

A memorial service for Lloyd "Pop" Wheatley, 97, of Big Timber, Mont., will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church, 1121 Clay St. in Fairfield. Pastor William Burke will preside.

A memorial service was held in Montana on Wednesday. Interment of cremains will take place in the spring in Steamboat Springs,  Colo.

Mr. Wheatley died of natural causes Nov. 26, 1999, at Pioneer Medical Center in Big Timber.

Born Aug. 11, 1902, in Ward,  Colo., he was raised in the Clayton College, a home for fatherless children in Denver, after his father's death.

At the age of 21, he joined the U.S. Army and served three years at Schofield Army Barracks in Hawaii. His assignment was as the music librarian to the band master. He was self-taught on seven instruments, but he favored the tuba. After discharge in Colorado, he played in the DRGW Railroad Band and also played in several dance bands.

He married Mary Leoma Ellis in Hayden, Colo, on Oct. 17, 1926.

In 1940, due to ill health, Mr. Wheatley accepted a job at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo. He worked as a machinist in Shop 38. In 1946, he moved his family to Fairfield where he was co-owner of the Mobil station. Later he owned the Richfield station across from Armijo High School. Many students came to him at lunch or after school just to talk, and those who remember him say he would listen to their problems and often serve as a counselor or even offer financial help. Often, transients would come to the station to ask for help, and he never turned them away.

He and his wife were charter members of the First Baptist Church in Fairfield. He was also a past member of the Order of the Moose, Armijo High School Booster Club, Boy Scouts and Chamber of Commerce. He also co-sponsored a Little League team. He was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan, and his hobbies included gardening, music, leather work, needlepoint and reading.

His family says he will be most remembered for his generosity, kindness and loyal friendship.

He is survived by his brother, Marris of Minneapolis; sons, Lloyd of Galveston, Ind., and Gerald of Elko, Nev.; daughters, Nellie Collins of Big Timber, Evelyn Fittro of Cameron Park and Mary Wilson of Citrus Heights; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Cordelia (Hendricks) Wheatley; his wife, Mary; a son, William; brothers, Tom and Robert; and a sister, Dora.

At the family's request, memorial donations can be made to the children's organization of one's choice.

Arrangements in Montana are being handled by Lowry Funeral Home.

Robert G. Kuehnert

A memorial service for Robert G. Kuehnert, 82, of Vacaville will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the Unity Church of the Valley.

The Rev. Vic Jenkins of the Unity Church in Vacaville will officiate. Inurnment will be private.

Dr. Kuehnert died Nov. 26, 1999, at Laurel Creek Health Care in Fairfield after a long illness.

Born Dec. 6, 1916, in Crystal Lake, Ill., Dr. Kuehnert moved to the area 48 years ago. He was a state-employed psychiatrist in California for 37 years, and he also worked at the California Medical Facility in Vacaville before his retirement.

Dr. Kuehnert was a member of the American Medical Association, California Medical Association, Northern California Psychiatric Society, California State Employees Association, Astronomical Society of the Pacific and Unity Church of the Valley.

He enjoyed rock and surf fishing, gardening, stone masonry, woodworking and classical music, and he played the ukelele.

Dr. Kuehnert is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dottie; his children, David of Merced, Matthew of San Jose, Michael and Diane Ford of Carmichael, John and Diane Ford of Vacaville, William and Diane Ford, also of Vacaville, and Deborah and Walt Morgan of Rescue; 13 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Doctors Without Borders, 6 East 39th St., Eighth Floor, New York, NY, 10016.

Arrangements are being handled by Vaca Hills Chapel.

John H. Spicer

No services will be held for John H. Spicer, 76, of Oregon.

Mr. Spicer died on Nov. 25, 1999, in Portland, Ore.

Born on Sept. 25, 1923, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, he grew up in Rulo, Neb., before moving to California in his early teens. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He recently had moved to Oregon. He was a member of Vaca Valley Christian Life Center.

Mr. Spicer is survived by his wife, Virginia Romero; sons, John Jr., Kenneth and Chris of Vacaville; and daughter, Linda Hays of Portland, Ore. He also had eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Gary.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Vaca Valley Christian Life Center's building fund.

Mary Alta Freeman

A funeral for Mary Alta Freeman, 82, of San Pablo will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Vaca Hills Chapel. Pastor Gene Dodson of Valley Evangelica Free Church will officiate.

Burial will be at Rolling Hills Cemetery in Richmond.

Mrs. Freeman died Nov. 29, 1999, in Doctor's Medical Center in San Pablo following a long illness.

Born May 1, 1917, in Porterville, she moved to the area 55 years ago.

She was a cook in many restaurants for many years and loved music, cooking, art and playing the piano, guitar, harmonica and the accordion.

Mrs. Freeman is survived by her sons, Earl G. of Vacaville, Henry of Galt, Fred of San Rafael, Cleo of Berkeley and Bill of Oakland; daughters, Alta Rourk of Sacramento and Mary Ann of Richmond; sisters, Lilly of Forest Hills, Bernice of El Sobrante, Alpha of Forest Hills and Reona; grandchildren, Tim, Tammy, Terry, Tony, Dennis, Christine, Brenda, Renee, Tasha, Julie, Brad, Dave, Debbie, Mike, Phillip, Scott and Teresa; and great-grandchildren, Thomas, Kristen, Jason, Donny, Joey, James, Jessica, Tabitha, Delvin, Angela, Joshua, Jordie, Derek, Megan, Drew, Joshua, Nathan, Zeek, Christina, Anthony and Daniel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo, in 1989; brothers, Orville and George; sister, Margie; grandson, Thomas; and great-grandson, Justin.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Vaca Hills Chapel.

Patricia 'Patty' Ann Howell

A funeral for Patricia "Patty" Ann Howell, 53, of Vacaville will be noon Monday at Vaca Valley Christian Life Center. Pastor David Crone will officiate. Burial will be at Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery.

Mrs. Howell died on Dec. 1, 1999, at VacaValley Hospital after a sudden illness.

Born on Dec. 14, 1945, in Vallejo, she lived in the area all her life. She worked as a secretary for Vaca Valley Christian Life Center, where she was a member, for 13 years. She was a former president of Women's Aglow and enjoyed collecting teddy bears and crocheting.

Mrs. Howell is survived by her husband, Melvin of Vacaville; daughter and son-in-law, Tori and Michael Rael of Vacaville; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Sandi of Independence, Ky.; mother, Angelina Garcia of Vacaville; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Rita Garcia of Pollock Pines; and grandchildren, Michael, Mark and Leanna Rael, all of Vacaville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Patty Howell Memorial Fund, care of Vaca Valley Christian Life Center.
