Robert Wysong

Robert Wysong, 84, of Salinas, died of natural causes Sunday, March 18, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Newport, Va., and lived in Beckley, W.V., and then in Salinas for 41 years. He was a carpenter for 44 years. He played golf three days a week until 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.O. and Mary Wysong, and wife of 50 years, Vonda Maye Williams Wysong.

Survivors: Daughter, Patricia A. Stevens of Salinas; sisters, Louise Link Stiff of Pembroke, Va., and Emma Sue Stowers of Newport, Va.; grandchildren, Lora McElhenie of Norfolk, Va., Robert D. Pack of Deaton, Texas, James D. Williams, Warren E. Williams and Wayne D. Williams, all of Salinas, and Jeffery L. Williams of Lawton, Okla.; eight great-grandchildren; seven nieces; and three nephews.

Services: Private memorial services will be held by the family.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Gerald Emmett Brooks

Gerald Emmett Brooks, 68, of Salinas, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Seattle and lived in Salinas for 20 years. He was self-em-ployed as a computer programmer, formerly with Boeing in Seattle as a programmer in missile guidance, scientific program. He was devoted to his family.

Military service: U.S. Marines, serving in the Korean War.

Memberships: Madonna del Sasso Catholic Church, past president of the United for Life, San Jose Chapter.

Memberships: Wife of 36 years, Theresa Brooks of Salinas; sons, John Brooks of Salinas and Mark Brooks of Ojai; daughters, Ann Marie Hart of Iowa City, Iowa, Elizabeth Hernandez of San Jose and Andrea Brooks of Santa Paula; brother, John Brooks of Willows; aunt, Marie Lonay of Seattle; and grandchildren, Andrew, Cath-erine, Lucy Marie, Veronica and Maria.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil: 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Burial: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Doris S. Vosti

Doris S. Vosti, 84, of Salinas, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Katherine Convalescent Hospital.
She was born in Salinas and lived in the city all of her life. She was a Pacific Telephone operator where she worked for 40 years before retiring. She graduated from Salinas High School. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors: Son, Mike Vosti of Salinas; daughter, Cynde Hughes of Salinas; brothers, Emil Sgheiza of Salinas and Hank Sgheiza of Bradley; and two grandchildren.

Memberships: Valley Guild, Monterey County Swiss American Club, Monterey County Historical Society, Sacred Heart Church, Steinbeck House.

Services: Private family memorial services will take place.

Placement of ashes: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: Scleroderma Foundation or the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Hugo Cursi

Hugo Cursi, 91, of Castroville, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at SunRidge Care and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Hibbing, Minn., grew up in Santa Cruz and lived in Castroville for 72 years. He owned Seaside Service Station from 1929 to 1933, Castroville Liquor from 1934 to 1973 and worked for several years at the Giant Artichoke wine, cheese and fruit stand until 1990.

He loved fishing, gardening, cooking and sports. He also enjoyed family and friends.

Memberships: Moose Lodge, Castroville Club, Sons of Italy and Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church.

Survivors: Daughter, Lorraine Barker of Salinas; brothers, Marino "Lefty" Cursi of Castroville, and Angelo Cursi and Atilio "Buck" Cursi, both of Freedom; sister, Adella Cursi of Santa Cruz; grandsons, Robert Barker of Sunnyvale and Lonn Barker of Marina; granddaughters, Bambi Barker of Salinas and Denise Amerson of Jakin, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren.

Mass: Memorial Mass 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville.

Placement of ashes: Ashes scattered at sea over Monterey Bay.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1, Salinas or donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Magdalena Rodriguez

Magdalena Rodriguez, 52, of Salinas, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Mexicali, Baja Sur, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for 26 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Husband, Josafat Rodriguez Sr. of Salinas; daughter, Maricela Rivera of Salinas; sons, Josafat Rodriguez Jr. and Abraham Rodriguez, both of Salinas; mother, Teresa Avilez of Mexicali; three sisters; five brothers; and grandchildren, Leilani Rodriguez, Joseph Rodriguez, Robert Rivera Jr. and Mark Anthony Rivera, all of Salinas.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, April 9, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, April 9, at the mortuary chapel.

Services: Final visitation 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at the mortuary chapel then follow in procession to St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas, for the funeral Mass at 11 a.m.

Burial: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Jimmy Lee Reece

Jimmy Lee Reece, 63, of Oklahoma City, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Watsonville.
He was born in Oklahoma City, and lived in Salinas for more than 40 years before returning to Oklahoma. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1957.

Survivors: Children, James Reece, John Reece and Jerry Reece; sisters and brothers, Irene Santana, Norine Viezeas, Geneva Gabriel and Barbara Reed, all of Oklahoma, Donna Davila and Kathy Govea, both of Salinas, Ray Reece and Charles Ladd, both of Texas, and Don Reece of Arkansas; and nine grandchildren.

Services: Private funeral services have been held.

Arrangements: Oak Hill Funeral Home, San Jose.

Margaret K. Day

Margaret K. Day, 95, of Salinas, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Katherine Convalescent Hospital.
She was born in Baraboo, Wis., and lived in Salinas for 52 years. She was a retired music and piano teacher and had been a restaurant manager for several years. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1925 and taught piano privately for many years. She enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling and canning foods. She was a devoted wife to her husband, John Day, who preceded her in death in 1992.

Memberships: First United Methodist Church and Wisconsin Alumni Association.

Survivors: Close friends, Howard and Joyce Coe of Salinas.

Services: Memorial services 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Placement of ashes: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Gary O. Poor

Gary O. Poor, 63, of Seaside, died of natural causes May 4, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born in Oklahoma. He was an auditor.

Survivors: Mother, Effie Poor of Seaside; brothers, James Poor and Robert Poor and two nephews.

Burial of ashes: Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Arrangements: Monterey Peninsula Mortuary.

Luisa Canete

Luisa Canete, 94, of Santa Cruz, died of natural causes Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Pleasant Care in Santa Cruz.
She was born in Cebu, Philippines, and lived in Salinas, then Santa Cruz for 17 years. She was a laborer with Valley Farms.

Memberships: Fil-Visayan.

Survivors: Son, Raymond Canete of San Jose; brother, Dincisco Olaguiber of the Philippines; and four grandchildren.

Mass: 2 p.m. Friday, June 8, Sacred Heart Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas. Services beginning at the church.

Burial: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal Street and Pajaro Street, Salinas.

Diana Marie Moreno

Diana Marie Moreno, 38, of Castroville died of complications of pancreatitis Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Stanford Medical Center, Palo Alto.
She was born in Oakland and lived in Castroville since 1964. She attended Notre Dame High School and Prunedale Christian Academy.

Survivors: Mother, Hortencia Moreno of Castroville; father, Daniel T. Moreno of Salinas; sister, Elvamarie Zimmerman of Marina; brothers, Daniel J. Moreno of Prunedale and David J. Moreno of Salinas; niece, Alyssa Moreno; nephew, David Moreno Jr.; and grandmother, Magdelena Anchondo of Castroville.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. today, June 6, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil service: 7 p.m. today, June 6, at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville.

Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at the church.

Burial: following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Brian H. Solomon

Brian H. Solomon, 43, of Marina, died of natural causes Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
He was born in Providence, R.I., raised in Riverside, R.Is. He was an elevator mechanic with the U.S. government for 11 years. He was a first-prize winner on the Bronze League for the All Niters of 1996, and a part-time DJ. He raced NASCAR stock cars for nine years and was ninth in the Central California Region in 1989. In his younger years, he excelled in swimming and tennis in Rhode Island and was a YMCA champion swimmer.

Military service: Joined the Army at 18 and served initially at Fort Ord, then in Hawaii in 1982-83 before coming back to Fort Ord where he was discharged in 1984. He also served in Grenada. He was preceded in death by his twin brother 43 years ago.

Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 811, American Legion Post 591 (former commander) and National Federal Employees Union Local 1690.

Survivors: Wife, Sonya Solomon of Marina; daughters, Dawn L. Solomon/Mitchell of Seaside and Tessa N. Spurlock of Marina; father, Daniel Solomon of Westerly, R.I.; brothers, Danny P. Solomon of Rhode Island, Paul R. Solomon of Providence and Peter G. Solomon of Vermont; sister, Barbara A. Solomon of Westerly; and two grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service 4 p.m. today, May 11, at VFW Post 811, 3131 Crescent Ave., Marina.

Arrangements: Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Jean Catherine Warfield

Jean Catherine Warfield, 86, of Monterey, died of natural causes Tuesday , May 8, 2001, at Pacific Care Residential.
She was born in Oakland and lived in Monterey County for 56 years. She was a registered nurse for 50 years and worked for the Visiting Nurse Association before her retirement at the age of 72. She graduated from Bishop Johnson College of Nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, a 49ers and San Francisco Giants fan, enjoyed cooking, gardening, planting begonias in her yard. She was a seamstress and loved See's Candy. She devoted herself to her work at the VNA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter.

Memberships: Monte Vista Elementary School PTA, Multiple Sclerosis Board, Monterey County Health Advisory Board, History and Art Association.

Survivors: Daughters, Nancy Klopstock of Fairfield, Sharon Duckworth of Salinas and Denise Warfield of Seaside; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Cremation: The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove.

Memorials: Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 2480, Monterey 93942.
