Collin Nathan Landes

Collin Nathan Landes, infant son of Sarah Hoshii and Patrick Landes of Monterey, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at his home.
He was born in Monterey on May 23. He was a sweet baby, sharing lots of smiles and giggles with his family who called him Chub Champ.

Survivors: parents, Sarah Hoshii and Patrick Landes of Monterey; sister, Destiny Joy Hoshii of Monterey; grandparents, Tami Hoshii and Henry Hoshii, both of Monterey, and Kathryn Landes of Santa Cruz; aunt, Elizabeth Landes of Santa Cruz; uncle, Mark Hoshii of Monterey; great-grandparents, Robin Halstead of Prosser, Wash., and Dicie Burger of Seaside; and grandaunt and uncle, Carol and Lee Andres of Pacific Grove, who raised Patrick Landes.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove.

Celebration of life: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at Calvary Chapel, Monterey.

Edward Bernard

Edward Bernard, 82, of Seaside, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born in Bolivia, N.C., and lived in Monterey County for 42 years. He was retired from the Army and worked in civil service for 10 years at Fort Ord.

Military service: U.S. Army for 30 years, retired master sergeant, and received the Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal fifth award.

Memberships: American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Masonic Lodge.

Survivors: Long-time companion, Delia Moore of Seaside; daughter, Rosanna Johnson of Los Angeles; sister, Blanche Gore of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the mortuary.

Burial: Following with military honors at Mission Memorial Park, Seaside.

Jose Q. Cruz

Jose Q. Cruz, 69, of Soledad, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Buena Vista, Guanajuato, Mexico, and lived in the Salinas Valley for 10 years. He was a night watchman. He was preceded in death by his son, Jaime Cruz.

Survivors: Wife, Maria Consuelo Cruz of Salinas; daughter, Gloria Cruz of Mexico; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at the mortuary.

Services and burial: Mexico City.

Jack W. Flaherty

Jack W. Flaherty, 73, of Salinas, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born in San Francisco and lived in Salinas for 48 years. He was the former owner of British Motors of Monterey and Flaherty Factors in Monterey and Hollister. He was the West Coast Sprint Car Champion in the early 1950s and competed in the Reno Air Races and drove race cars at Laguna Seca and Seabring, Fla. He was an avid golfer and street rodder.

Military service: U.S. Navy, serving in World War II and the Korean War.

Memberships: Hollister Elks Lodge, member and past president of the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula and Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Survivors: Wife of 48 years, Frances Flaherty of Salinas; son, Doug Flaherty of Monterey; daughter, Denise Smith of Carmel Valley; sisters, Pat Kellehur of San Francisco, Mary Faulknor of Lower Lake and Barbara Jean Doyle of Santa Clara; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Cremation: Has been held.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, Memorial Program, 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1, Salinas 93906-3590 or donor's favorite charity.

Donna M. McLaughlin

Donna M. McLaughlin, 84, of Salinas, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Pueblo, Colo., and lived in Salinas for 56 years. She was a mother and homemaker. She attended First Presbyterian Church and loved gardening, hobbies and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband, John McLaughlin, in 1981.

Survivors: daughters, Jeanette Cruysen of French Gulch and Sharon Hands of Salinas; son, Ted McLaughlin of Salinas; brother, Pete Rich of San Jose; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: Graveside services 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Edward E. Sisemore

Edward E. Sisemore, 79, of Salinas, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center in Salinas after a lengthy illness.
He was born in St. Paul, Ark., and lived in Salinas for 41 years. He was an electrical inspector with PG&E for 38 years before his retirement. He held the Golden Gloves Boxing Title in his younger years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veva Sisemore, in 1991.

Military service: U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors: Stepson, Tom Thomas Emrich of Enfield, Conn.; sisters, Shirley Miller and Lewella Rosenfelt, both of Diamond Springs; brothers, Jack Sisemore and Worth Sanford, both of Jackson, and Don Sisemore of Placerville; local cousin who cared for him, Vivian Berry of Salinas; and several other cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: Graveside services 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

Frank E. 'Gene' Smith

Frank E. "Gene" Smith, 79, of Salinas, died of a stroke Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Port Arthur, Texas, raised in Riverside and lived in Salinas for 54 years. He retired from the land department of PG&E in 1982. He attended San Jose State College. He was an avid music lover and sang tenor in the comedy barbershop quartet, The Plus Four. He also enjoyed bonsai gardening, fishing, hiking, restoring antique furniture and arranging and listening to music.

Military service: Merchant Marine, serving in the South Pacific during World War II.

Memberships: Member and past director of the Salinas/Monterey CypressAires.

Survivors: Wife of 54 years, Clara F. Smith of Salinas; sons, Frank (Liz) Smith and Bill (Cindy) Smith, both of Salinas, and Mike (Amanda) Smith of Bend, Ore.; brother, Sanford Smith of Omaha, Neb.; sister, Nancy of Yorba Linda; grandchildren, Katy Smith and Steve Smith, both of Salinas, and Jessica Smith-Blockley and Stuart Smith-Blockley, both of Bend, Ore.; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Celebration of life: From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the family home.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, to the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Lisa Ann Gutierrez

Lisa Ann Gutierrez, 39, of Visalia, died Monday, July 2, 2001, in Visalia.
She was born in Gilroy and lived in Visalia for 16 years. She was a cook with Bob's Big Boy and then Denny's. She attended Visalia First Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed doing crafts and writing poetry.

Survivors: Parents, Edward and Edith Gutierrez of Olympia, Wash.; brothers, Michael Edward Gutierrez of Gilroy, Steven James Gutierrez of Missouri and Daniel Scott Gutierrez of Gonzales; three nieces; three nephews; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at Miller Memorial Chapel, 1120 W. Goshen Ave., Visalia.

Services: Memorial services 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the home of Daniel Gutierrez in Gonzales.

Burial: Private.

Rebecca Hernandez

Rebecca Hernandez, 40, of King City, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto after a lengthy illness.
She was born and raised in King City. She was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and daughter. She also enjoyed baking and going fishing.

Survivors: Husband, Jose Hernandez of King City; daughter, Venuscia Pineda of King City; parents, Jimmy Vasquez and Pascuala Garulca; brothers, Pete Vasquez and Jimmy Vasquez, both of King City, and Bobby Vasquez of Los Angeles; sisters, Virginia Vasquez and Mary Lopez, both of King City, Terry Klein of Georgia and Sally Casarez of Los Angeles; and grandchildren, Sandy Pineda and Mandy Pineda, both of King City.

Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 14, at Whitehurst Grim Funeral Chapel, 429 Bassett, King City.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, Aug. 14, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 504 N. Third St., King City.

Burial: Following at King City cemetery.

Vivian T. Hitchcock

Vivian T. Hitchcock, 76, of Salinas, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at her home after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Watertown, N.Y., and lived in Salinas for 31 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading, baking, crocheting and entering her award-winning cookies in the Monterey County Fair. She was a loving and devoted mother. Her son, Gregory Hitchcock, preceded her in death, in 1956.

Survivors: Daughters, Virginia Kimberling of Rathdrum, Idaho, Paula Maugeri of Modesto, Nanette Francis of Sacramento and Brenda Hitchcock of Salinas; sons, Fred Hitchcock of Auburn, Dan Hitchcock of San Jose and Lance Hitchcock of Salinas; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mass: Memorial Mass 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Cremation: Has been held.

Memorials: Girls and Boys Town, P.O. Box 6000, Boys Town, Neb. 68010 or the donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Thelma M. MacKenzie

Thelma M. MacKenzie, 97, of Monterey, died of natural causes Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at her home.
She was born in Spokane, Wash., lived in San Francisco during the earthquake and fire and lived in Monterey. She was a nurse, working for many years in Monterey before retiring. She enjoyed travel and at the age of 90 walked the Great Wall of China. She was a 1921 graduate of Monterey High School.

Military service: Army nurse during World War I.

Survivors: Son, Gordon K. MacKenzie Jr. of Carmel Valley; and granddaughter, Elisabeth MacKenzie of Carmel.

Cremation: Soquel Crematory.

Placement of ashes: Ashes scattered off Monterey at a later date.

Arrangements: Chapel of Seaside Funeral Directors, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Marcella Louise Trout

Marcella Louise Trout, 93, of Seaside, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after a brief illness.
She was born in Mankato, Minn., and lived in Seaside for 50 years. She was retired from Safeway after 15 years of service. During World War II, she served at the Pentagon as a Photostat technician copying captured classified documents.

Survivors: Husband, Leo D. Trout of Seaside; stepdaughters, Sydney Harper and Sandra Frost, both of Sand City; stepson, Ron Trout of Sonora; and sister, Dessa Shear of Rochester Hills, Mich.

Viewing and meditation: 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at Mission Memorial Park and Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside. Services will follow.

Memorials: The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Monterey County, P.O. Box 3058, Monterey, 93942.
