Myrtle Lillian Hender

Myrtle Lillian Hender, 88, of Salinas, died of natural causes Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Monahan, Wash., and lived in Salinas for 44 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed painting with oils for many years.

Memberships: St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church and past member of Salinas Valley Art Association.

Survivors: Daughter, Diane Harris of Salinas; son, Douglas Hender of Roseville; sister, Nellie Heins of Seattle; brother, Roy Elduen of Kirkland, Wash.; granddaughters, Kim Shehorn and Kristi Oliverria, both of Salinas, Carrie Cota of Del Mar and Cathleen Garcia of Folsom; grandsons, Ron Hender of Castro Valley and Eric Hender of Maple Valley; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 18, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, 72 E. San Joaquin St., Salinas.

Placement of ashes: Redmond City Cemetery, Redmond, Wash.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1, Salinas, or Alzheimer's Association, 182 El Dorado St., Monterey 93940.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Juana Rendon

Juana Rendon, 71, of Salinas, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at her daughter's home in Greenfield after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Davidson City and lived in Salinas for 32 years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Husband, Leopoldo Rendon of Greenfield; daughters, Rosario Magallon of Soledad, Alicia Soto and Patricia Perea, both of Greenfield, Rosa Ruiz of Visalia and Maria Ortiz of Salinas; sons, Eduardo Rendon and Esteban Rendon, both of Salinas, Leopoldo Rendon Jr. of Soledad, Ricardo Rendon of Greenfield and Carlos Rendon of Salem, Ore.; sisters, Amelia Rodriguez of Brawley and Elena Monteon of Mexicali, Mexico; brother, Jaime Monteon of Brawley; 31 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From 1 to 9 p.m. today, April 17, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Lester O. Hopkins

Lester O. Hopkins, 80, of Salinas, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Mountain Grove, Mo., and lived in Salinas since 1946. He was a truck driver with Foremost Dairies for 30 years and retired in the 1970s. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Maxine, in June 2000, and grandson, John Hopkins, in 1994.
Military service: Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. Along with other decorations and citations, he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Memberships: Life member of Teamsters Union Local 890 of Salinas.

Survivors: Sons, David Hopkins of San Jose, and Gene Hopkins and Jerry Hopkins, both of Salinas; brothers, Bert Hopkins and Norman Hopkins, both of Mountain Grove; sister, Eva Harris of Mountain Grove; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: Private graveside services where military rites will be accorded at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, P.O. Box 3058, Monterey 93942.

Hazel I. Couch

Hazel I. Couch, 93, of Soledad, died of natural causes Friday, April 13, 2001, at Salinas Care Center.
She was born in Mercellin, Mo., and lived in Soledad. She was a homemaker and a widow.

Survivors: Brothers, Gene Sportsman of Sparks, Nev., and Clyde Sportsman of Laredo, Texas; sister, Helen Solis of Soledad; and aunt, Ann Scettrini of Greenfield.

Services: Graveside services 11:30 a.m. today, April 17, at Soledad cemetery.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Terry Funeral Service, 395 East St., Soledad.

Leona Lucille 'Lee' Anderson

Leona Lucille "Lee" Anderson, 80, of Carmel Valley, died Friday, April 13, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after a brief illness.
She was born in Hayti, S.D., and lived in Carmel Valley for 43 years. She was a homemaker and before her retirement helped open Monterey Dodge and was head bookkeeper for many years. She was a trumpet player with the Army Band, welcoming troops back from World War II in Europe in 1946. Following her military service, she joined the Hormel Girls Band and traveled the United States promoting Hormel Products.

Military service: World War II Army sergeant.

Survivors: Husband of 43 years, John Anderson of Carmel Valley; sons, Christopher Anderson and Rodney Anderson, both of Carmel Valley; and brothers, Ralph Yrjanson of Cloquet, Minn., and Ronald Yrjanson of Louisiana.

Services: Private memorial services will be held by her family.

Cremation: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Lorene F. Feaster

Lorene F. Feaster, 89, of Moreno Valley, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning.
She was born in Gracemont, Okla., lived in Salinas for 50 years and in Moreno Valley for one year. She was a salesperson for 25 years with Sears Roebuck Co. Her husband, Vinson E. Feaster, preceded her in death.

Survivors: Sons, Vinson F. Feaster of Moreno Valley and Bobby D. Feaster of Soquel; sister, Minnie Cowan of Weatherford; five grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services: Have been held.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Arrangements: Weaver Mortuary, 690 Euclid Ave., Beaumont.

Lonnie 'Bud' Arter

Lonnie "Bud" Arter, 80, of Salinas, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after an illness.
He was born in Lindsey, Okla., and lived in Salinas for 40 years. He was a mechanic with House of Hardtops before retiring.

Survivors: Wife of 59 years, Anne Mae Arter of Salinas; daughters, Barbara Wyrick of Salinas and Bertha Vincent of Irving, Texas; son, Sammy Lynn Arter of Salinas; sisters, Jewel Marble of Sacramento and Delisa Grithin of Manteca; five grandsons; five granddaughters; 30 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: Graveside services 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Ethel Schmeideskamp Robley

Ethel Schmeideskamp Robley, 93, of Salinas, died of natural causes Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Moline, Ill., lived in Sonoma Valley, the San Francisco area and then in Monterey County since 1964. She was a claims processor for what is now Signa Insurance. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where she met her husband and married in 1934. She enjoyed reading and was interested in history, geography and gardening. She moved to Salinas where she and her husband built their home. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Robley, in 1996.

Memberships: PEO Sisterhood Chapter EU and Monday Afternoon Club.

Survivors: Cousins, Beverly Hartnell of Salinas, Chris Canterbury, Ivo Canterbury, Emi Canterbury, Jackie Thurman, Zoe Thurman and Sandra Grimmer.

Services: Private family services will be held.

Cremation: The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove.

Placement of ashes: El Carmelo Cemetery.

Memorials: P.E.O. Program for Continued Education.
