Mamoru (Spud)was born in Livingston, CA, on January 12,1917. Spud attended elementary and high school in Livingston, and continued his education at Modesto JC and UC Davis. He was among the first group of men drafted for the US Army out of Merced County. Spud fought with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in Europe during WWII, participating in campaigns in Italy, France and Germany, where he received four bronze stars. Spud, married his wife Violet before leaving for Europe and settled on the family farm in Livingston after discharge from the Army. In addition to working the family farm, Spud was a letter carrier for many years. Spud served for 12 years on the Livingston Elementary School Board of Education, he was an active member of the American Legion and VFW Post. Spud was also a longtime member of the Grace Methodist Church Board and a Sunday School Superintendent.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Violet, children Bill, Chris and Mari and their families as well as 8 grandchildren.

Mcgarry - Virginia “Ginger” Remily McGarry
May 19, 1939 – August 9, 2008
Ginger was born in Tucson Arizona, the first child of Virgil and Mary. She moved to Los Gatos, California in 1955 where she finished high school and was named Miss Los Gatos. She married Robert McGarry in 1957 and they raised five children in San Jose, California. She moved to Turlock, California in 1992.
Ginger enjoyed her role as Family Historian, compiling an extensive collection of photographs and newspaper clippings dating back over four generations. She also enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables, jigsaw puzzles, collecting southwestern pottery and plates from her travels, and growing cactus. Ginger’s commitment to family was evident through the time and nurturing she invested in her precious grandchildren. She treasured spending time with them individually as well as gathering them around to spend time with “Grandma”.
She worked for the Santa Clara County Fair Association for 28 years, earning respect and trust and numerous friends. She will be remembered most for her quiet and dignified manner.
Survivors include her children Steve (Dana), Keith, Kevin, Jackie, and Robert (Tricia); her grandchildren, Patrick, Kate, Caity, Cody, and Kristen. Devoted daughter, adored sister, loving aunt and dedicated friend who will be missed by the whole Famdamily. In lieu of flowers Ginger’s family requests donation be made to Alexander Cohen Hospice House where Ginger spent her last peaceful days or to United Samaritans Foundation in Turlock, CA

Michael Wesley Van Guilder Sr.

Michael was born to his parents Richard and Alice Van Guilder in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was in the Air Force from 1971-1976, and worked as a meat cutter for Goering Meat before becoming a police officer. He worked for the Turlock Police Department for over 27 years, and was a P.I. with a MGI background. He was a board member with the Delhi Raiders Youth Football, and was an avid bass fisherman and tournament angler.
He was a loving husband to his wife Gloria, the proud papa to Alyssa, Bailey, Trace and Jaylin, a supportive and proud father to Jennifer Sanchez of Delhi, a best friend, dad and fishing partner to Mike Jr. of Delhi, and was a great friend to all. He is also survived by his mother Alice Van Guilder of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, brothers Richard Van Guilder Jr. of Rio Rancho, New Mexico and Thomas Van Guilder of Las Vegas, Nevada; sisters Cherie Van Guilder of Livingston, California and Donna Van Guilder of Salida.
Donations may be made in loving memory of Mike Van Guilder to the Delhi Youth Football Program P.O. Box 424 Delhi, CA 95315. Mike was the Team Rep. for The Delhi Raiders and was very actively involved with the program.
A memorial service will be held at Allen Mortuary on Monday, January 26, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.

Smith - Ruth Elaine Johnson Smith, 89, died at home in Hilmar. She was born in Hilmar in April 1919, the tenth of twelve children of Carl Magnus and Esther Johnson. Though she began and ended her life in Hilmar, she spent much of her adult life in San Francisco and the surrounding area. She married Robert William Smith, a fourth generation San Franciscan, in 1946. The Smiths had seven children. In addition to their own children, they acted as foster parents in San Francisco and Alameda counties for twenty-five years, caring for over fifty children, many of them pre-adopt infants.
When her husband died in 1968, Mrs. Smith’s youngest child was still in pre-school. The young widow put her energy into raising the children while continuing to offer special needs foster care. When the last child left home, she realized another dream--she opened a doll shop in historic Jack London Village in Oakland. The Doll Cottage became known as one of the finest doll shops on the west coast. She was named to the Who’s Who of California Business Women. When she retired, she came home to Hilmar where she renewed her membership with Hilmar Covenant Church.
She will be missed by her children James R. Smith and wife Liberty of Murphys, Wendy Lawton and husband Keith of Hilmar, Linda Smith of Fresno, Nancy Ritter of Fair Oaks and Randy Smith of Redwood City. She was preceded in death by her daughter Diane Crawford and her son Bud Alan Smith. She is survived by a sister Dorothy Borgquist of Chico, CA; seven grandchildren: Michael Smith and his wife Tina of Tracy, Eric Smith of Fresno, Rebecca Lawton of New Castle, DE, Lacey Ritter of Manchester, NH, Patrick Lawton of Modesto, Matthew Smith of Fremont, Rae Lynn Smith of Wilmington, DE, and one great-granddaughter Jacqueline Smith of Tracy.
A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, August 13th at Hilmar Covenant Church at 11:00 AM. Memorial gifts can be made to Hilmar Covenant Church, Post Office Box 340, Hilmar, CA or Hospice of Emanuel, 825 Delbon Avenue, Turlock, CA.

Ray was born in Stockton, Missouri; at age 5 he moved to Covina where he attended school graduating from High School there. He had also lived in Ontario and West Covina before settling in Turlock in 1980. He was a precision machinist and had owned his own machine shop in Walnut, CA.
He was a past president and vice president of the American Dairy Goat Association. He was a Classifier Linear Appraiser and judge of dairy goats.
He had bowled for years and also greatly enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen (Ray) Horton of Turlock, Calif., Daughter-Cindy Kooistra of Turlock, Calif., Daughter-Cheryl Horton of Turlock, Calif., Son-Gary Horton of Turlock, Calif., Daughter-Deanna Seachrist of Turlock, Calif., Brother-John Horton of Modesto, Sister-Ann Nevitt of Redlands, Calif., Sister-Jeanie Simon of Kansas

Mr. Jacob was born and raised in Turlock. He graduated from Turlock High School and Stanislaus State College. He has worked for the Health Services Agency for Stanislaus County for 10 years. Previously he worked for Armour's (ConAgra) for 20 years. He was an avid follower of auto racing and he wrote articles for racing newspapers and websites, primarily for oval dirt track racing.

Charles Frederick Schweiker, Jr.
Mr. Schweiker was born and raised in Iowa. He moved to California at about 18. He worked in Turlock in the poultry business, where he also raised his family. He also worked for the Federal Government with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms for 17 years. He retired in 1990. He built his dream home in Arnold, CA, where he enjoyed golfing and cutting firewood. He was known by Chuck, Grandpa, Crapaw, Pawnee and Sweetie. He was well loved by his family and many friends.
He is survived by his Wife-Betty Schweiker of Hughson, Calif., Daughter-Andrea Schweiker, Son-Douglas Schweiker, Son-Jeffrey Schweiker, Step Daughter-Susan Bunch, Step Son-David Goesch, Step Daughter-Audrey Kitzman, Sister-Marilyn Mullins, Half Sister-Virginia Ferguson, Niece-Nancy Macek, Niece-Pamela Traynor, & Neice-Tish Tower.

Armstrong - Gladys, age 93, of Turlock, died Wednesday, at Emanuel Medical Center. Gladys was born in Bell, CA and raised in Upland, CA and Oakdale. In 1971, she moved to Denair and then settled in Turlock in 1978. She had attended Denair Friends Church and was a member of Monte Vista Chapel. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting.
She is survived by her sons Claud Armstrom, Lynn Armstrom both of Washington, daughters Luella Golder of Oak Habor, WA, Jan Armstrong of Turlock, Grace Ebie of Mariposa, Edith Wilcox of West Plains, MO, eighteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was precede in death by her husband John Armstrong, brother Howard Clewett and sister Lois Clewett.
Graveside Service will be at Denair Cemetery on Monday, March 3 at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to Allen Mortuary.

Bradley - Betty Jean Bumgardner Bradley of Oakdale passed away suddenly at her home at the age of 79. Betty was born in Modesto on November 16th to George and Gladys Bumgardner. She was raised in Modesto and graduated from Modesto High School in February 1947.
In May 1947 she married the absolute love of her life, Stewart Bradley. They lived in the Modesto - Oakdale area all of their lives. Betty and Stewart owned a peach ranch just east of Modesto for many years. They raised four children on that peach ranch: Melvin Bradley, Gail Barnes, Fredene Bradley, and Scott Bradley. They were married 60+ years.
Mom’s favorite thing was big family gatherings; birthdays, holidays, or just because; she was always ready. Betty and Stewart were avid square dancers for many years. Betty enjoyed traveling and made a number of trips with their RV friends to the mountains, Yuma and to Baja Mexico. Her hobbies were collecting antiques and genealogy. She was very active in the Modesto 50 Plus Club, the McHenry Mansion, Museum, and with the Calaveras Big Trees Association (life member). She was also a charter member of two antique clubs: Kettle Drum and the Modesto Antique Club.
She was a very giving person and provided long-term care in her home for 3 different family members. People will remember her most for her friendship. She made friends easily and kept them for life.
Betty is survived by her loving husband and life long best friend Stewart Bradley, her four legged best friend Peaches, her son Melvin Bradley (Barbara) of Oakdale, her daughter Gail Barnes (Randy) of Escalon, her daughter Fredene Bradley of Oakdale, and her son Scott Bradley (Shelley) of Escalon. She had seven grandchildren Cheryle Bradley (Karen) of Clovis, Melissa Beneux (Tony) of Modesto, Frances Barnes of Modesto, Josh Bradley (Jill) of Oregon, Jil Dickison (Craig) of Oregon, Jennie Bradley (Matt) of Oregon and Sam Griffith (Sernity) of Modesto. Betty had five great grandchildren Tanner, Jacob, Adrienne, Jonathan, Ayden and Parker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Fred Bumgardner who died in the Korean War and her daughter-in-law Nancy (Green) Bradley.
A celebration of her life is planned for Sunday, May 25th at the family retreat located at 6787 Dogtown Road, Coulterville, Ca. The family respectfully requests, that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to either the Calaveras Big Trees Association @ , P.O. Box 1196, Arnold, CA 95223 or the McHenry Mansion Foundation @ 906 15th St, Modesto, Ca 95354.
Her ashes will forever dwell in the Sierra Nevada Mountains along with her mother-in-law Adrienne Bradley and father-in-law Owen Bradley.
Mom was and will forever be… the guiding light in our lives. She may be gone, but she really lives on through all of us. We will never forget her strength, character, compassion, charm, grit, determination, and unconditional love. She was an inspiration for us all.
