Darold Lynn McEnespy
January 11, 1952 - January 17, 2005

A funeral service will be held for, Darold Lynn McEnespy, 53, of Chico, on Monday, January 24, 2005, 1:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, burial will follow at Dayton Cemetery.
Darold was born on January 11, 1952 in Oakland, California to Harold and Rebecca McEnespy.
He passed away on Monday, January 17, 2005 at Enloe Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Kelly Norbeck; sons, David and Charles McEnespy; brothers, Harold and Theron McEnespy; sisters, Rebecca Rivera, Susan and Ramona McEnespy, and Betty Jo Smith; granddaughter, Rachel Irene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations to help with funeral cost can be made to Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, who are handling the arrangements.

Edvins Vidners
December 20, 1925 - January 17, 2005
Birthplace: Riga, Latvia
Resided In: Chico, California
Edvins Vidners, a dear quiet man, passed away on January 17th at Enloe Hospital, at the age of 79.
He was born on December 20, 1925 in Riga, Latvia. He came to the U.S.A in 1963 and made his home in the San Francisco Bay Area, working for the Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco for 22 years.
He and his wife Zigrid moved to Chico 5 years ago to be close to their sons, Uldis and Maris Vidners. They will all miss him very much as will his many friends at Bidwell Presbyterian Church.
A memorial service will be held January 29, 2005 at 11:00 am at Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the needy children in Latvia at the following Latvian organization: Latvian Assoc. Daugavas Vanagi ASV, Inc. or to the Bidwell Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home.

Frances Belle Kirby
August 02, 1920 - January 19, 2005

Frances Belle Kirby, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at her daughter’s home in Magalia. She was born August 2, 1920 in Ventura, California to Alfred Shiner and Julia Ellen (Cassidy) Tracy, the youngest of eight children. Her siblings were Thomas, Philip, Jeanette, Phyllis, Eloise, Nellie, and Robert. Eloise and Nellie died soon after birth and Jeanette died of diphtheria at age eight.
Frances graduated from Venice High School, then earned an Associate Degree at Santa Monica Junior College in 1939. She was a bookkeeper for many years mainly in the lumber and medical fields. A horsewoman, she rode with the Del Rey Palomino Club in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Frances married Sterling Robinson (divorced), and then married James P. Kirby who passed away in 1970.
Frances moved to Paradise six years ago to be near her eldest daughter. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Holmes of Magalia, Terese Rozelle of Woodland Hills, CA and Michele Roraus of Olalla, WA, her
Stepchildren James Kirby of OR, Patricia Brown of West Hills, CA and William Kirby of Spokane, WA, as well as 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Mark A. Gordon
March 20, 1959 - January 20, 2005

Resided In: Chico, California
A funeral service is planned for Mark A. Gordon, 45 of Paradise, at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. He died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 as a result of a car accident.
He was born March 20, 1959, in Chico. He graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in 1977. At age 15, he was chosen to be a police cadet for Chico Police Department, serving in that capacity from 1974 to 1977.
He worked at Lyons Restaurants in Chico and Redding in a variety of positions before being accepted into the Butte College Police Academy. He graduated from the academy around 1980, and was hired by the Chico Police Department.
In 1981, he was chosen to be one of the department’s first community service officers, working with the public and business communities. The department chose him as the initial Youth Services/School Resources officer in 1985, sending him to the University of Southern
California for training. A poem he composed about a police officer and a student during the training was presented to the school as the graduating class' gift.
In 1986 he was nominated as Chico Police Department’s police officer of the year.
Assigned in 1988 to the position of field training officer, he trained at least 25 new officers for the department. He wrote the grant that funded the first alcohol awareness and education program for the police department, and in 1995 was one of two officers assigned to the new post of Alcoholic Beverage Control officer for the city of Chico.
In 1996, he was promoted to police sergeant, assigned to patrol. In 1998, he was named as the sergeant in charge of the traffic unit, and also coordinated the K-9 program. He served as president of the Chico Police Officers Association, and was involved in its fundraising activities that supported various community organizations and activities.
Comments from his personnel records included:
"He volunteers for special assignments,” “He is sometimes faulted for getting too involved,” “He has a high level of enthusiasm,” “He sets high goals for himself,” “He leads his shift in activity,” “He shows that he truly cares about people - even suspects,” “He is compassionate and understanding."
Personnel comments from his time as sergeant included:
“He has demonstrated the ability to take charge,” “He is dedicated and has concern for all his employees,” “His dedication to the department could best be described as a passion.”
He spent 25 years with the Chico Police Department, retiring in 1999 on a medical disability. He later went to work for Colusa Casino, where he has served as assistant security director and assistant human resource director.
Mark loved being a caregiver, and loved taking his daughter to Agate Beach near Trinidad. Holidays were a special time for him. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family, and his community.
Survivors include his mother, LaVeta Nation of Chico; his father, Everett Gordon of Paradise; his daughter Rachel and her mothers, Lori and Veronica of Chico; his brothers and their wives, Sid and Linda Gordon of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Craig and Becky Gordon of Chico; his nieces, Carly Gordon of Chico; his nephews, Kevin Gordon of Chico, and Michael and his wife Jennifer of Oakley, and numerous aunts and uncles.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home to be dedicated to a program involving young people. Burial will be in Glen Oaks Cemetery.

Alfa Winifed Bowers
March 01, 1917 - January 21, 2005

A graveside service was held for Alfa Winifred Bowers, 87, of Cohasset, California, on Wednesday, January 26, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Cohasset, California.
Alfa passed away on Friday, January 21, 2005 in Chico at a local care facility.
She was born on March 1, 1917 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Otto and Edith Larson.
She worked for twenty years as a dental assistant.
Alfa is survived by her husband, Jim Bowers; her son, Jim Bowers; two daughters, Betty Murray and Sharron Adams; son-in-law, Larry Adams; three grandchildren, Kristin, Sarah and Sean; and one great granddaughter, Maya; and one grandchild is expected.

A. Juanita "Nita" Rhodehouse
March 30, 1923 - January 22, 2005
Birthplace: Carson City, Nevada
Resided In: Paradise, California
A. Juanita "Nita" Rhodehouse, 81, passed away passed away on January, 22, 2005. She was born in Carson City, NV on March 30, 1923 to Vernon and Agnes Dignon. Mrs. Rhodehouse was reared on an historic East Palo Alto farm and was a graduate of Sequoia High School in Redwood City. She lived in Menlo Park, CA, then Westwood, CA, prior to moving to Butte County.
Mrs. Rhodehouse enjoyed swimming, hiking, playing the violin and painting with oils. She is best remembered by her friends as one who would always take in those in need. She was an original volunteer with the Betty Wright Swim Center, always championing the rights of the physically challenged. Her North Fair Oaks, Menlo Park home is remembered as a haven for neighborhood children, especially in their teen-aged years.
She is survived by her husband retired Menlo Park Fire Department Capt. Earl Rhodehouse of Yuma , AZ; her daughters Beverly Cole of Penn Valley, CA; Carol "Cookie" McClard of Quincy, CA; and Sue Guglielmone of Redwood City, CA; and her sons Gary Rhodehouse and Glenn Rhodehouse both of Magalia, CA. Ten Grandchildren and Five Great Grandchildren.
A Memorial service is planned for Friday, January 28, 2005, 10:00 a.m., at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way, in Chico, California.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the attention of the Betty Wright Swim Center at CAR, 525 East Charleston Road, Palo Alto, CA 94306.
