Julius Irvine
Graveside services for Julius C. Irvine, a resident of the Sacramento area for the past 19 years, will be held Thursday, May 31. Mr. Irvine died May 21, 2007 at the age of 70.
He was born in Danville, Ky. and served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1962 as an aviation technician. He retired from the California Highway Patrol after 30 years as a mechanic, and was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Florin.
Mr. Irvine is survived by his wife Linda; and children Julian and Jean Irvine, all of Sacramento.
Visitation is today, Wednesday from 1 to 7 p.m. in East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Thursday’s services begin at 2 p.m. in the Sacramento Valley V.A. National Cemetery, Dixon.

Jerry Wall
Jerry Louis Wall II, a longtime resident of the Elk Grove-Sacramento area, died in an accident May 20, 2007 at the age of 47.
He was born Sept. 24, 1959 in Sacramento and graduated from Elk Grove High School where he was named Athlete of the Year. He was very active in the Jehovah’s Witnesses and was a successful businessman.
Mr. Wall is survived by his wife Melissa; daughter Brittany Webb, husband Mike and grandson Mikey; son Jerry Wall III; father Jerry Wall Sr. and wife Alice; and mother Joan Smith and husband Merv.
He was the brother of Gregg Wall and wife Julie; and uncle of Justin, Trent, Kyle, Kaylie and Tristen.
Memorial services took place May 28 at the Foulks Ranch Kingdom Hall. Arrangements were by East Lawn Elk Grove.

Martha Hottman
Martha M. Hottman, a longtime resident of Elk Grove, died Jan. 24, 2002 at the age of 89.
Mrs. Hottman was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elk Grove, a church she joined in 1935. She was an active member of Women of LIFE and avid student of the Bible.
She was born March 11, 1912 in South Dakota.
Mrs. Hottman was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Otto Hottman; and her son, Arnold Hottman.
She is survived by her children, Irene Sellers and Oscar Hottman, both of Sacramento, and Ken Hottman of Elk Grove; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of Emil Bieber of Elk Grove and sister-in-law of Elsie Bieber of Sacramento.
Services took place Monday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with interment at Sacramento Memorial Lawn. Remembrances may be made to the church’s memorial fund at 8701 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.
Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Calvin Koehler
Funeral services will take place today (Friday) for Calvin Gene Koehler, who died May 18, 2003 at the age of 69.
Mr. Koehler was born in North Dakota and had lived in Elk Grove for the past 25 years. He spent 44 years as a steel fabricating estimator for Palm Iron Company in Sacramento.
He was an avid golfer and member of Valley Hi Country Club.
"Actually, he was a golfing addict," said his wife, Lynn. "He was also devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren."
Mr. Koehler also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lynn Koehler; his children, Jeff Koehler and wife Star of El Dorado and Scott Koehler and wife Sara of Galt; and his grandchildren, Cammie Maciel and husband Alfonso, Jonathan, Grace, Anna, David, Adam and Ben.
Mr. Koehler was the brother of Jim and Kenny Koehler, and the great-grandfather of Alfonso Jr., Alexander and Alexis.
Today's services will begin at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.

Scott Hughes
Funeral services will be held today (Friday) for L. Scott Hughes of Elk Grove, who died May 18, 2003 at the age of 37.
Mr. Hughes was born in San Jose and grew up in Camarillo. He graduated in 1988 from California State University, Northridge, where he played football; "In fact, he was a football fanatic," said his wife. He enjoyed USC football and was a Cleveland Browns and Sacramento Kings fan.
Mr. Hughes was a claims adjuster for State Farm Insurance Company for 15 years. Fishing and camping were among his hobbies along with swimming with his girls and barbecuing. The family has lived in Elk Grove for the past six years.
He is survived by his wife, Kristin M. Hughes of Elk Grove; his children, Devon Rebecca, 8, and Mallory Danielle, 2; and his parents, William and Carol Hughes of Camarillo. He is also survived by one brother.
Today's services begin at 10 a.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.

Joseph Vierra
A celebration of the life of Joseph Darrol Vierra, a longtime resident of Elk Grove, will be held Friday, Dec. 8. Mr. Vierra, 60, died Dec. 2, 2006.
Mr. Vierra was born March 6, 1946 in Yuba City to John and Marian Vierra of Nicolaus. His family owned and operated a dairy outside of Nicolaus and he grew up there, graduating from East Nicolaus High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968.
In 1966 he married his high school sweetheart, Linda Dethlefsen, and they moved to Elk Grove in the 1970s where he was involved in Elk Grove Youth Baseball and was an avid supporter of the Elk Grove Junior Thundering Herd for 20 years from 1978 to 1998. He was also a great fan of the Oakland Raiders, supporting them “through the lean years, the mean years and back again,” said his family.
Mr. Vierra owned and operated J & L Tires on Waterman Road in Elk Grove for 12 years, and Vierra’s Pre-Plaster Company for the past 10 years. He was a member of BloodSource Donors Club, giving blood every six weeks; and donated to Food for Families every month.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Filbert.
Mr. Vierra is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda; children Darrol Vierra and wife Becky of Galt and Zachary Vierra and wife Gena of Mather; and grandchildren Brittney, Ryan, Nathan and Alexis.
He was the brother of Johnny, George, Francis and Bob Vierra, Marian Fassler, Violet Renslow, Lorraine Hosking, Margaret Bishop, Denice Gould and Nadine Vierra, and many other family members and friends.
Friday’s services begin at 10 a.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, CA 95815; or Food for Families.

Magtangol Marcelo
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, Dec. 8 for Magtangol (Marc) Marcelo of Elk Grove who died Dec. 2, 2006 at the age of 75.
He was born in Cavite, the Philippines, and retired as a Chief Hospital Corpsman after 21 years in the U.S. Navy, following which he worked for 18 years as an EKG technician at VA hospitals.
Mr. Marcelo is survived by his wife of 47 years, Theodora Marcelo of Elk Grove; children Glen Marcelo and wife Sheri of Arizona, Marvin Marcelo and wife Carol of Washington, and Jeffrey Marcelo and wife Krys and Kimberly Trias and husband Vaughn of Elk Grove; and grandchildren Marissa, Brittany, Alyssa, Alexander, Veronica, Raquel, Christian, Andrew and Jaden.
He was the brother of Benny Marcelo of Vallejo, Ligaya Lorilla of San Jose and Wally Simbuland of San Ramon. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
The Dec. 8 Mass will be held at noon in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 9539 Racquet Court, Elk Grove. Cremation is private.

Sue Okamoto
Longtime Elk Grove resident Sue Okamoto died at her home Dec. 2, 2006 from complications due to esophageal cancer. She was 79.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11 a.m. at the Sacramento Japanese United Methodist Church where she had been an active member for decades. The church is located at 6929 Franklin Blvd., Sacramento.
Mrs. Okamoto, a native of Sacramento County, lived in her home in Elk Grove with her husband, Peter since 1953. She worked for Bank of America in Elk Grove for eight years before spending 10 years as a budget analyst for the Elk Grove Unified School District, retiring in 1990.
Her involvement with Scouting spanned over 20 years during which she was a den mother and den leader coach for Elk Grove Cub Pack 179 and served on the troop committee for Elk Grove Boy Scouts of America Troop 59.
Locally, Mrs. Okamoto volunteered at the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop and served on the scholarship committee of the Elk Grove Community Foundation. In Sacramento she volunteered for the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library, the Ronald McDonald House, and organized several groups over the years for the Church World Service CROP Walk for the Hungry.
A breast cancer survivor for over 30 years, Mrs. Okamoto raised money annually for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. This past year, she was joined at the event by her 6-week-old grandson Peter and, together with their families, raised more than $1,200 for breast cancer research and education.
In honor of their 50th wedding anniversary in 2002, the Okamoto family established the Peter and Sue Okamoto Scholarship through the Elk Grove Community Foundation. Since that time, 10 scholarships have been awarded to graduating seniors from Elk Grove area high schools. Mrs. Okamoto had attended the awards dinner each year, giving every recipient several hugs during the evening.
She enjoyed traveling, and in recent years visited Mount Rushmore, Branson, Mo., Japan and New England accompanied by her husband and various children.
In addition to her husband Peter, Mrs. Okamoto is survived by her sons: Jeff of Tahoe City; Steve and wife Kelly of Santa Cruz; Ken, wife Cheryl and children Janelle and Eric of Galt; and Matt, wife Kirsten and son Peter of Sacramento.
