Ruth Button
July 31, 1921 - February 17, 2005
Birthplace: Hebron, Nebraska
Resided In: Chico, California
A memorial service will be held for Ruth Button, 83, of Chico at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 26, at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. She died on February 17, 2005, at a local hospital.
Ruth was born July 31, 1921, in Hebron, Nebraska, and has resided in Chico since 1937. She was a graduate of Chico High School, class of 1939. Along with her husband Walter, she owned and operated Sandy Gulch Market for 16 years. She was also a volunteer at Enloe Hospital for nearly 20 years, and the president of Chico State University awarded her an honorary certificate of "Student Benevolence."
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Walter Button; sister, Ellen Grier; brother, James Dufur; and countless nieces and nephews. Related or not, Ruth will be greatly missed.

Beverly Jane Detrick
October 25, 1931 - February 17, 2005

Memorial services will be held for BEVERLY JANE DETRICK, 73, of Chico 11:00 a.m. Tuesday February 22nd at the Trinity United Methodist Church Chapel, and a reception will follow at the family’s home. She died Thursday February 17, 2005 at her home. Beverly was born October 25, 1931 in Los Angeles, CA to William and Inez Akister. At a young age she moved with her family to Chico where she graduated from Chico High School. On June 10, 1950 she married her high school sweetheart, Marvin Detrick. The couple lived in Chico before settling in Quincy where Beverly drove school bus for the Plumas Unified School District. In 1988 they retired to Lake Almanor and later to Chico. Beverly enjoyed doing artwork specializing in drawings and oil and water colors. Survivors include her husband, Marvin of Chico; 2 sons, Scott of Sacramento and Bruce of Etna; 2 sisters, Leona Robinson of Chico and Carol Sipper of Santa Barbara; a brother, Jim Akister of Redding and 3 grandchildren Tyler, Sherry and Max. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Frank Albert Halbert
April 12, 1942 - February 20, 2005
Birthplace: Bradford, Pennsylvania
Resided In: Chico, California
A memorial service will be held for Frank Albert Halbert, 62, of Chico, on Saturday, February 26, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Frank passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2005 in Sacramento, as a result of a traffic accident, with his loved ones by his side. He was born on April 12, 1942 to LeRoy and Esther Halbert in Bradford, Pennsylvania. Frank served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict. On June 25, 1966 he married Linda Linch in West Sacramento. He worked for thirty years as a traffic officer for the California Highway Patrol, with six years as a Motorcycle Officer. Frank drove trucks for the past ten years, following retirement from the C.H.P. Survivors include his wife, Linda Halbert; two sons, Douglas and Andy Halbert; one daughter, Karen and her husband Eric Goularte; his mother, Esther Halbert; and one brother, Don Halbert.

Mary Amanda Knight
May 25, 1920 - February 23, 2005
Birthplace: Minot, North Dakota
Resided In: Chico, California
Mary Amanda Knight, born May 25, 1920 to Eli and Loma Brenneman in Minot, N. Dakota. Entered into rest on February 23, 2005 at home, with her daughter and two of her grandchildren at her side.
As a small child, the family moved to the Yakima Valley in Washington, where her father farmed, and raised three children by herself. Mom always said they survived the depression of potatoes and rutabagas. In the middle of winter they moved to Bremmerton in a Model A Ford, where they thought it would be warmer. As she grew up she became the first licensed bartender in the state.
She married George H. Knight on February 9, 1946. They lived in various places but moved to Paradise in July of 1956. She worked for the Post Office for 22 years, delivering mail, retiring in 1981. After her husband’s death in 1998, she moved to Chico with her daughter and family.
She is survived by her son and wife, J and Judy Knight, daughter and husband, Loma and Jim Piluso, four grandchildren, five step grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and her friend of over 50 years, Gail Johnson of Kelseyville, CA. Mom, you are gone but not forgotten.
A visitation service will be held on Sunday, February 27, 2005 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, who are handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Butte Home Health and Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Betty Ann Holcomb
May 03, 1920 - February 23, 2005

Resided In: Paradise
Betty Ann Holcomb, age 84, passed away on February 23, 2005. She was born in on May 3, 1920 in Bellfont, PA to John and Minnie Rossman. Betty was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She worked as a bookkeeper for the University, for other educational institutions and for the military. She was an avid reader enjoying many kinds of literature. For relaxation, Betty enjoyed doing craftwork. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 28, 2005 at 11:00 AM at First Assembly of God Church on Elliot Road in Paradise. Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert E. Holcomb of Paradise, her grandson Hugh Sutton of Paradise and her granddaughter, Kayla Sutton of Sunnyvale, Ca. Her son, Robert E. Holcomb, Jr. and her daughter, Sandy Sutton, predeceases her.

Barbara June Mardilla
May 26, 1927 - February 24, 2005

Resided In: Chico, California
Barbara passed away February 24, 2005 at Enloe Hospital in Chico surrounded by her family following a brief bout with a pulmonary infection and complications. She was born in Berkeley, California to George and Leah Plummer. She was a resident of Chico from 1965 to 1971 and again from 1980.
She married the love of her life, Gil Mardilla in 1956 and were married for 48 wonderful years. They met during a vice raid in El Cerrito, California, but it's important to note that Barbara was employed by the El Cerrito police department and Gil by the Albany Police so the meeting was "Official Business!"
Barbara's passions were her children, reading, music and summers at Lake Almanor. She was a graduate of the Heald's Business College in the Bay Area and held a number of positions in that field until 1980 when she opted to be a full-time mom and homemaker.
Barbara was active in a number of organizations including Children's Home Society, boy and girl scouts, Society for the Blind translating text to braille.
She is survived by her husband, Gil, daughter Lorrie and her husband Jerry Foster of Chico, son Dan of Oroville, daughter Julie of Chico, grandson Matt Reynolds of Sacramento, step-granddaughters Troi Frankhuizen of Granite Bay, and Teri Smart of Clovis, California, and several great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5th, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Newton-Bracewell, 680 Camellia Way, Chico.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in her name to the American Heart Association c/o Newton-Bracewell.

Margaret California Rose
March 25, 1909 - February 26, 2005
Birthplace: Oakland, California
Resided In: Chico, California
Memorial services for Margaret California Rose, 95, will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at 5 p.m. at the home of Sharon and Bob Rose, 14221 Decatur Drive, Magalia, California. Margaret was born March 25, 1909, in Oakland, California, to Carl and Wilamena Geortz. She passed away February 26, 2005, in Chico.
Margaret met and married Edward Rose, and together spent many years in Los Angeles, where she was immersed in her work as activity director with the Shriners Auditorium, running family benefit shows and other events. She and Edward moved to Butte County in 1988 to be near their children. She enjoyed knitting, fishing with her boys, and working.
Margaret leaves behind two loving children, son, Robert Rose of Magalia, and daughter Evelyn Kraft of Chico, as well as four grandchildren and many good friends. Her husband Edward Rose preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Foundations for His Ministry in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Ray Fell Miller
June 11, 1919 - February 26, 2005
Birthplace: Los Angeles, California
Resided In: Chico, California
Born June 11, 1919 to Anna and Walter Miller, Ray grew up in Los Angeles with his brothers, Fred and Paul, and sisters, Margaret and Ruthie. He graduated from Muir Tech High School in 1936 where he starred on the school track team. He attended Pasadena City College, and developed his life-long love of ferns and growing plants, working for Baldwin Nursery in Pasadena.
On June 30, 1939, Ray married schoolmate, Nancy Barker. In the early years of World War II, they moved to Paradise, where he worked for Standard Oil, and then to San Francisco, to work in an incendiary bomb plant. Ray joined the Marine Corp in 1944 and fought in the Battle of Okinawa, where he was wounded, then served with the occupation forces in North China. He returned home in 1946, and bought property in Paradise, where he built a house and a fern nursery. Ray always grew ferns wherever he lived.
He worked for P.G.&E. until his retirement in 1978. As a P.G.&E. employee and manager, his family moved from Chico to Quincy, back to Chico, then to Willows, and finally to Lake Almanor. Along the way, he was active in the Masonic Lodge, where he became a Master Mason; the Boy Scouts with son, Dan; the Willows Planning Commission; Rotary Club; and Seneca Hospital Board of Directors. He also served as Director of Willows Chamber of Commerce, Lyons Club President, Prattville Fire District Commissioner, Director of the Plumas County Historical Society, Plumas County Grand Jury member, and President of the Plumas County Museum Board.
Ray loved to travel and explore, taking his family on many fishing and camping trips, and never gave up the dream of finding gold at the bottom of a gold pan. Ray and Nancy took many wonderful trips around the United States and to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Thailand, Hong Kong, and China. He loved to fish and play golf. After retiring from P.G.&E., Ray sold real estate and built a house in Lake Almanor West, where he enjoyed playing golf and watching the native wildlife.
In 1989, they moved to Paradise where Ray spent many happy hours growing ferns and orchids, writing poetry, and playing golf. He also loved to explore the desert with his brother, Paul. Ray was a devoted husband and father, and was proud to be a grandfather and great grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nancy; son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Priscilla Miller of Washington; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Justin Phillips of Chico; grandson, Jim Miller; granddaughter and husband, Jessica and Chris Rady and their children, Hope and Aidan Rady, all of Washington; sisters-in-law, Betty Murry and Eva Miller; brother-in-law, Marvin Sampson; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will celebrate Ray’s life at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2005 at the Congregational Church of Chico, 1190 E. First Avenue. Donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the Masonic Lodge in Paradise, in Ray’s name, in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, who are handling the arrangements.
