Karl Dean Moss
January 06, 1946 - March 18, 2005

A Memorial service will be held for Karl Dean Moss, 59, of Chico, on Saturday, March 26, 2005, 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #423, 1705 Manzanita Ave., Chico. Karl passed away on March 18, 2005. He was born to Lawrence and Minnie Moss on January 6, 1946 in Stockton, California. Karl enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War, where he received a purple heart. On March 4, 1967 he married Karen L. Perry in Reno, Nevada. Karl worked for thirty years as a Communication Technician for Pac Bell. He is survived by his wife, Karen “Ronni” Moss of Chico; son, Daniel Moss and his wife, Jennifer, and their two daughters, Reagan Lyndsey and Taya Dannelle, all of Chico; son, David Moss of Orangevale; and two brothers, Jim Klutts of Manteca, and Kenneth Moss of Rapid City, S. Dakota.
Karl was the “Handy-Man” to everyone he knew. He was always the first one to volunteer for any project and he loved every challenge—the more difficult, the more he enjoyed it.
Karl was a member of the Chico Drifters Car Club and the Chico Elks Club.
Memorial contributions may be made to Chico Elks Lodge #423, in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home who are handling the arrangements.

Jane Maria Larocco
September 01, 1923 - March 18, 2005

Resided In: Chico, California
A memorial service will be held for Jane Maria Larocco, of Chico on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 3:00 pm at the Newman Center. Jane passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005, at age 81.
Jane was born in Yakima, WA on September 1, 1923. She grew up in the Columbia River Gorge area of Washington State. She raised her family with her husband, Michael J. Larocco in Los Gatos, CA. After raising her family, she continued showing her love for children by volunteering for the Head Start Program and helping with programs for autistic children.
For the past four years, Jane lived at the Sunrise Village Health Center in Chico. She is survived by her husband, Michael J. Larocco of Los Gatos, her daughter, Susan D. Daugherty of El Dorado Hills, three sons, Terry M. Larocco of Chico, Tim A. Larocco of Bend, and Michael R. Larocco of El Dorado Hills, and eight grandchildren, Ryan and Jaron Daugherty of El Dorado Hills, Antonio, Jason, Michael and Angela Larocco of Chico, and Kyle and Kelly Larocco of El Dorado Hills.
Jane was an artist. After high school she attended the Cornish School of the Arts in Seattle and later the New York School of the Arts. She further developed as a painter, sculptress and potter in the Los Gatos area, where she taught art classes for the Los Gatos Art Association. Jane exhibited her art at local exhibits as well as at the Portland Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bucks Lake Family Camp Scholarship Fund or to A Rinty for Kids Foundation (ARFKids’ mission is to provide service dogs for disabled or terminally ill children) in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements.

Daniel Robert Merkes
May 29, 1951 - March 19, 2005

Resided In: Orland, California
After a 6-month courageous battle with complications from the West Nile Virus, Daniel went home to be with the Lord on Saturday March 19, 2005 at the age of 53. He was born May 29, 1951 in Appleton, Wisconsin to Carmen and Norbert Merkes. An avid motorcyclist, he toured the U.S. before moving to California where he met and married Jane Gitter, his wife of 25 years. In 1989 they settled in the Capay area. Daniel was known for his great smile and positive attitude. He was a hard working, gentle man with a love for animals and the outdoors. Daniel is preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife; his mother; and 4 sisters, Susan and Mike Hoffman; Barb and Carl Miller; Joan Merkes; Chris and Jon Bloch all of Wisconsin; in-laws Les and Mary Gitter, Ruth and Rob Rauen, Paul and Lynette Gitter, Andy and Mary Gitter, Theresa and Mike Woods, Joe and Sandy Gitter, Amy and Daniel Mueller all of Wisconsin and Kevin and Melissa Gitter of Arizona; 26 nieces and nephews; and 6 great nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions maybe made to the University of California San Francisco Organ Transplant Foundation or Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be held at the family residence on Daniel's birthday, Sunday, May 29th. The family wishes to thank Dr. Jimmy Roberts for his special care and extraordinary efforts to restore Daniel's health.

Feona Jayne Steeves
August 28, 1943 - March 22, 2005
Birthplace: Ogallala, Nebraska
Resided In: Chico, California
A memorial service will be held for Feona Steeves at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29 at Grace Brethren Church. She died March 22, 2005 at home with her husband, John, at her side. Feona was born August 28, 1943, in Ogallala, Nebraska to Merle and Frances Starkey.
She was a graduate of Chico State with a lifetime teaching credential. She worked as a Medicare analyst for Blue Shield/Blue Cross and for Dr. Jim Swartz. She was also a member of Eastern Star. Her favorite activities were playing games with her grandchildren and attending their activities. As this became more difficult due to her illness, John would videotape their events for her to later watch.
Feona is survived by her husband of 20 years, John; sons Scott Cory, and Grant and Debbie Cory; stepson Jeff Steeves; stepdaughter Dianne Fliescher; 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Linton Frank Stebbins
June 04, 1919 - March 25, 2005

Linton F. Stebbins was born on June 4, 1919 in San Francisco, California to Linton A. and Bertha (Ellingwood) Stebbins. His family had lived in San Francisco for four generations at that time. He died at Enloe Hospital, Chico, California on March 25, 2005 at the age of 85 years.
Masonic funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 PM at the Chico-Leland Stanford Masonic Family Center in Chico, CA.
Linton grew up in Santa Clara, California, graduating from Santa Clara High School in the Class of 1937. After high school he attended San Jose State University as a music major. He was a trumpet player in dance bands of the era, playing with many of the big name bands in Santa Cruz and Capitola. At the beginning of WWII he was employed at Bethlehem Steel, in San Francisco, building ships for the war effort. During this period he had the opportunity to work with his father as a coppersmith, a trade that was passed between the generations.
In 1943 Linton enlisted in the USAAF, training in Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma and Kansas on the way to Ie Shima off Okinawa in the later phases of WWII. He was present on Ie Shima during Japanese surrender proceedings on that island.
Linton was united in marriage to Adelaide Santos on January 21, 1944 at Saint Claires Catholic Church, Santa Clara, CA. On return from the war in the Pacific, “Lin and Addie” built a home in Los Gatos. Linton worked as an electrician and senior electrical bid estimator during the vast expansion of the Santa Clara Valley during the 50s and 60s. He retired in 1982, moving into a home on Eagle Lake near Susanville that he had constructed over the previous 10 years. He and Addie spent 20 enjoyable years at the lake, enjoying the solitude of that northern locale. They moved to Chico in 1991.
Linton was an active member of the Masons, York Rite Bodies and Shrine. He was a Stable Master in the Los Gatos Camel Herders. He was active in lodge activities for over 50 years. He held various leadership positions including Master of the Los Gatos Lodge. He joined the Susanville Masonic Temple on moving to Eagle Lake and most recently served as Inspector for the Susanville, Fall River Mills and Lake Almanor regions. He was truly dedicated to the Mason cause, contributing many hours and miles to meetings, events and inspections.
He was a member of VFW Post in Los Gatos and Susanville. He was a charter member to the American Legion Post at Eagle Lake. He served as Fire Captain for the Eagle Lake Volunteer Fire Department at Stones Landing.
Linton was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Walter Stebbins.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Adelaide; niece, Leslie Lindberg (Peter and Chris) of Santa Cruz, sister-in-law, Melva Miller of Santa Cruz; and many cousins.
A loving husband and uncle, he will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Childrens Hospital, in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, who are handling the arrangements.

James Moss Gardner
April 23, 1927 - March 26, 2005

Resided In: Chico, California
A funeral mass will be held for James Moss Gardner, 77, of Chico 10:00a.m. Friday April 1st at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. A vigil will be held 7p.m. Thursday at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Jim was born April 23, 1927 in Los Angeles, CA to Marion and Lester Gardner. On September 1, 1951 he married Sue Orme, and in 1959 the couple settled in Chico.
Family members whom Jim loved and cherished include his wife, Sue of 53 years; children, Chris and Karolyn Gardner, Beth and Dave Palmer, Marian Lefebvre, Teresa and Chris Reid; grandchildren, Brian and Amy Gardner, Matthew and Katie Palmer, Adam Lefebvre and his fiancée, Ashley Bolger, Kim and Jose Ugalde, Andrew, Kevin, Jacob and Rachel Reid.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith” (II Timothy 4:7).
Burial will take place at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.

Colleen Winifred Howard
December 22, 1920 - March 28, 2005
Birthplace: Chico, California
Resided In: Chico, California
Graveside services will be held for COLLEEN W. HOWARD, 84, of Chico 10:00 a.m. Monday April 4th at Chico Cemetery. She died Monday March 28, 2005 at a local convalescent hospital. Colleen fought a short but courageous fight with cancer.
She was born December 22, 1920 in Chico, CA to May and Frank Quilter. She attended Pleasant Valley Elementary School when it was a one-room school. In 1939 she graduated from Chico High School and later attended Chico State. On June 12, 1942 she married Charlie Howard. Colleen worked 21 years in food service for the Chico Unified School District. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and did volunteer work for St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Shop and Enloe Hospice.
Survivors include her husband, Charlie of Chico; her daughter, Gala Ybanez and husband Greg of Durham; a son, Jim Howard and wife, Trudie of Stockton; 3 grandchildren, Julie, Jeff and Carmen; a great-grandson, Cody.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6p.m. Sunday at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be to a favorite charity in care of the funeral home.
