Troy Arthur Morse
February 18, 1948 - November 03, 2007

A Graveside service for Troy Arthur Morse will be held at 1 pm, Thursday, November 8, 2007 in the Fireman’s section of Chico Cemetery. He died Saturday, November 3, 2007 at a local hospital.
Troy was born February 18, 1948 in Chico to Troy and Lois Morse. His family lived in Durham where he was raised and educated. Troy was active in Boy Scouts and was awarded the rank of Eagle, he was also inducted into the Order of the Arrow. While in high school Troy enjoyed sports and played football. In 1967 he joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Oriskany, Troy was proud to serve his country.
Troy returned to the Chico/Durham area and January 1, 1975 went to work for the City of Chico Fire Department where he was employed for 30 years. Part of his job included fire investigation. He was known for his compassion, and enjoyed working with children.
Troy was a licensed fishing guide and a member of VFW Chico Post 1555. He enjoyed collecting antique bottles and was a member and Past President of the Bidwell Bottle Club.
Troy enjoyed having fun and playing practical jokes. He was always positive and full of life, and the nurses and doctors always commented on his outlook on life.
Those left that will miss him include his loving wife, Shirley, a son Michael, a daughter, Jodie Brown, two step-sons, Michael (Sandy) Harris and Jack (Mikela) Hengst, a step-daughter Gina Hengst, three sisters, Camille Sisson, Joan Morse and Lynn (Robert) Gulley, former wife and friend, Marge Morse, granddaughters, Kelsie Brown and Katie Brown, two aunts, Reba Morse and Barbara Graham, multiple nieces and nephews and a large extended family and many friends.
A Visitation will be held from 5 – 8 pm on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Memorial Donations may be made to either the Shriners Hospital for Children or the Injured Fire Fighters Association in care of the funeral home.

Harold Milton Rice
February 11, 1918 - November 05, 2007

Resided In: Chico, California
Harold Milton Rice, 89, of Chico went to be with the Lord on Monday November 5, 2007. He was born February 11, 1918 in Los Angeles, CA to Sue and Milton Rice
On February 18, 1938 he married Lucile Shrewsbury. The couple moved to Chico in 1955 where Bud opened the A&W Root Beer Drive-In on the Esplanade. He later owned and operated Mr. Chip’s Restaurant on Cohasset Road. Bud attended Faith Baptist Church.
Survivors include 2 sons, John and Bill Rice; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in 2002.
A visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday November 10th at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held 11:00a.m. Sunday November 11th at Faith Baptist Church that meets at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1877 Hooker Oak Avenue. Burial will take place next to his wife at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.

Jack Fisher Varner
September 11, 1920 - November 06, 2007

Jack F. Varner of Chico died Nov. 6, 2007 at Live Oak Manor.
Born in Oakland, he had been a valley resident for several decades.
He was a retired Wells Fargo banker, long time Elks member and served in the Navy during W.W.II.
Survivors include his granddaughter, Laura Ingalls Gunn of Phoenix AZ., grandson in law Eric Gunn, grandson Eric D. Ray of Ambler, P A., and granddaughter in law Tara Ray. Varner had three great grandchildren, Alyssabeth Ingalls Sherman, Madelyne D. Ray and Ian C. Gunn.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Mary Bradley Varner, and two daughters Janice Dean Ray and Karen Sue Ingalls.
A private memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon, November 11th in Walnut Creek, Ca.

Isabell Lucy Heal-Randall
February 07, 1922 - November 08, 2007

Funeral Services for Isabell Lucy Heal-Randall will be held at 1 pm, Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 5850 Clark Road, Paradise. Isabell went to be with the Lord Thursday, November 8, 2007 at her daughter’s home in Durham.
Isabell Lucy Pope was born on February 7, 1922 to James and Margaret Pope in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her family moved around a lot during the Depression, but eventually settled in Oakland. Isabell studied language at UC Berkeley, but with the advent of World War II she went to work as an engraver at Mare Island in Vallejo. It was there that she met her husband, Wendell T. Heal. They were married September 7, 1946 in Santa Rosa. Isabell and Wendell lived mostly in the Bay Area until settling in Livermore in 1952. They raised their family in Livermore, living there for 28 years. In 1980 Isabell and Wendell retired to Weaverville. After Wendell passed away in September, 1994, Isabell moved to Paradise in 2000 to be near her children. In January, 2007, Isabell married her high school sweetheart Lovell Randall in Paradise. While their time together was shorter than they had hoped, it was very special.
Isabell spent a good portion of her life caring for others, first as a housewife and mother, then in providing childcare for many families in Livermore. In later life she obtained an AA degree in Child Development as a requirement for opening a Christian-based childcare center at the First Baptist Church in Livermore. Isabell also spent many years of her life caring for the elderly members of her family. She dedicated much of her life to the work of her church. She also enjoyed gardening, music, and traveling. Isabell and Wendell took many travel-trailer trips across the United States and Canada, visiting many friends and family along the way.
Those remaining and who will miss her immensely include her husband, Lovell Randall, her children Dan and Chris Heal, Rob and Madeleine Heal, Melanie and Don Carstensen, and Margaret and Kevin Kelly. Also step-children Janet and Doug Dillon, Josh and Lorna Randall, and Colleen and David Turner. Isabell will be greatly missed by her 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and her brothers Gordon, Edward, Eugene and David Pope. She was predeceased by two brothers, James and Charles Pope.
A visitation will be held from 4-7 pm, Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Paradise Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church of Paradise or the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.

Sanford "Sandy" Reichert
August 21, 1955 - November 08, 2007

Sanford “Sandy” Reichert died in Roseville, CA November 8, 2007. Sanford was born August 21, 1955 in Indiana and was 52 years of age at the time of his death. Beloved father of Nolan Reichert of Chico and Denise Hunter of Sacramento. Loved son of Rick and Harriett Reichert of Meridian, ID. Loved brother of Marc Reichert of Roseville, CA and Elizabeth Gray of Boise, ID. Cherished grandfather of Erika Hunter and Cameron Hunter. Also survived by many other loving family members and friends.
Sanford was a 1973 graduate of Orland High School (Class of ’73 Rules).
He went on to serve his country in the US Navy for 4 years. Sanford moved to Chico in 1977 and went to work at Courtesy Motors, for 25 years, in the Parts Dept. where he became the Parts Manager. He later worked for Chico Volkswagon as a Parts Manager for a number of years. He loved his golf, fishing, softball and bowling. Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service, Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home, 680 Camellia Way.

Janiece Bernadette McLain
July 26, 1931 - November 11, 2007

Resided In: Chico, California
A lifetime resident of Chico passed away on November 11th, 2007. The last remaining child of Earl and Mercedes McLain. She came from a family of Chico Pioneers and her father served as the Butte County Assessor for many years.
Janiece graduated from Notre Dame Grammar School, Chico High School, and attended Chico State College where she was an avid field hockey player.
Vivacious and flirty as a youth, Janiece enjoyed taking care of her parents in their advanced years and belonged to St. Johns Catholic Church, The Chico Sailing Club, and active in California Women in Agriculture.
As a member of one of the founding rice growing families in Northern California, she took great pride in overseeing the family lands and taking long drives through the North Valley.
Worldly traveled, she took trips to Mexico, St. Thomas, Hawaii and she especially enjoyed her trips to Disneyland and Disney World with her grandchildren.
The last of the McLain’s Children, she was proceeded by her two brothers James and Robert as well as her two beloved sisters, Angelique and Yvonne. Janiece leaves a living legacy in the form of her two children Craig Havel of Chico and Lynne (Jon) Gingrich of Rocklin; and four grandchildren; Jason Gingrich, Kevin Gingrich, Nicole Havel and Garrett Havel.
A memorial Service will be held at the Newton-Bracewell Funeral home (530) 342-9003. With viewing starting at 10 am on Monday the 19th followed by a brief ceremony at noon. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved parents at 1 PM in the Mc Lain family section of the Chico Cemetery.

Jack Leroy Rupp
June 10, 1922 - November 17, 2007

Resided In: Chico, California
Chico resident, Jack Rupp, passed away Nov. 17, 2007 at Twin Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center. Jack was born June 10, 1922 to Purlis and Luella Rupp in Los Angeles, Calif. He graduated from Dorsey High School in Los Angeles and served in the Army during WWII, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. On July 14, 1945 Jack married Dorothy Phelps. He began his career as a mechanic for Rupp Bros. Garage. He worked as a jet engine mechanic for General Electric at Edwards Air Force Base, continued as a mechanic/machinist for FMC in San Jose where he helped design prototypes of new machinery, and ended his career as a mechanic for Aero Union in Chico. In his spare time, Jack worked with is hands making various models, assisting to restore automobiles and building a home at Lake Almanor.
Jack is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughter, Joyce Rupp, son Dennis and daughter-in-law, Marian Rupp, and grandson, Jesse Rupp of Chico; granddaughter, Lisa Rupp of Santa Cruz; and brother Purlis (Marty) Rupp of Palo Alto.
The family wishes to thank and acknowledge all those who provided quality care for Jack in recent years at the Peg Taylor Center for Adult Day Health Care, Townsend House Assisted Living and Twin Oaks.
Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, 2007 at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.
Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or your favorite charity, c/o Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home who are handling the arrangements.

Jack Thomas Nolan
June 27, 1920 - November 19, 2007

Resided In: Chico, California
Jack died on Monday, November 19, 2007 in Chico with his family by his side. He was born in Pleasanton, CA to Annie and John Nolan in 1920. He grew up in Pleasanton where he attended local schools through the 10th grade. His family moved to San Luis Obispo, CA where Jack graduated from San Luis Obispo High School.
He worked at Hearst Ranch in San Simeon during the summers. Jack started Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but his education was interrupted during WWII. He joined the service in December 1941. Jack took part in the North African, Sicily, Southern Italy, Anzio, and Southern France Campaigns. He was awarded the Silver Star for action in South Italy and a Purple Heart for wounds received at Anzio.
After the war Jack returned to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he graduated with a BS degree in animal science. He taught agriculture at Colusa High School from 1946 to 1958. In 1958 he was hired at Cal State University, Chico, where he taught until 1980. Jack was part of the agriculture faculty that planned and developed Chico State College Farm.
Jack received his Masters in Education from the University of California at Davis.
Jack always enjoyed family activities and being with his grandchildren. He was married to his sweet wife, Faye for 53 years. He is survived by his son, John (Barbara) Nolan of Elko, NV; 2 daughters, Nancy Nolan of Calabasas, CA and Cathy (David) Pooler of Los Molinos, CA; 4 grandchildren, Jack Jr., Joe, Charlie and Jessie. The happiest part of his life was spent with his wife who stood by his side with devotion, support and love. Faye preceded him in death in 2001.
As per our father’s request there will be no service, only a private family memorial. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Jack’s name to the California FFA Foundation, P.O. Box 834, Elk Grove, CA 95759 or the 3rd Infantry Division, 9th Field Artillery, Battery C at Fort Stewart, Georgia in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Vernon Bedford Cummins
November 14, 1922 - November 19, 2007

Resided In: Chico, California
A graveside service is planned for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at Chico Cemetery for Vernon Bedford Cummins, he died Sunday, November 18th at Enloe hospital. Vernon was born November 14th, 1922 to O.E. and Minnie Cummins in Stuart, Okla. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a Corporal. On October 3, 1948 he married Norma Leavitt his wife of 54 years who preceded him in death in 2003. The couple had three children, Vernon Eddie Cummins (Donna) of Lincoln, Calif. Debra Cummins-Couch of Reno, Nev. and Fredderick Cummins of Chico. He had nine grand children and ten great grand children and one sister, Ouilda Stephens. Vernon worked in the lumber mill industry for more than 25 years and he was also resident supervisor for the Thompson and Hope rice farm in Butte City, Calif. for more than a decade. He was a past Post Commander of the Jefferson L. Winn Post of the American Legion in Princeton and a lifetime member of the BPOE # 423 of the Elks in Chico. He enjoyed gardening, traveling in the early days of his retirement with his wife Norma and spending time with family. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation in care of Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home.
