Robert Murray Brand

Robert Murray Brand, 87, died on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, in Jackson.

Mr. Brand was born on Nov. 25, 1915, to William and Anna Brand in Chicago, Ill. He married his wife, Bertha on April 19, 1941.

For 27 years he owned his own business as a designer for remodeling houses, Robert’s primary home for most of his life was San Francisco, but he also lived in Amador County for 15 years. He was very creative, loved his dogs and gardening,

He is survived by his son, Robert Brand of Reno, Nev. and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Bertha A. Brand in March 2001 and a daughter, Diana.

At the family’s request, there will be no public service. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements were handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Danilo ‘Dan’ P. Vasilovich

Danilo “Dan” P. Vasilovich, 91, died on Saturday, July 3, 2004 in Fresno.

Mr. Vasilovich was born in Jackson on March 14, 1913 to the late Peter J. and Maria Vasilovich.

Dan attended Jackson Grammar School and Jackson High School, graduating in 1930. He was an excellent athlete in baseball and football and also boxed in six-round-bouts in Jackson.

He was first employed at the Argonaut Mining Company as a topside skip tender for a few years, then became employed as a parts salesman for Nevada Auto Supply Company in Reno, Nev., for several years.

He joined the U. S. Marine Corps and served as parts manager at Camp Pendleton for three years and then was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant.

Dan had over 280 acres in Reedley on which he grew cotton, grapes, oranges and a variety of plums until his retirement.

He was a member of the Lions Club and a 50-year member of the Masonic Fraternity.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Daisy Vasilovich; sons, Peter and Robert; daughter, Debbie; grandson, Adam; sisters, Sophie of Walnut Creek, Julie Vukalovich of Sacramento; brothers, Stan Vasilovich of El Cerrito and Evo Vasilovich of Jackson; daughter-in-law, Adair; brother-in-law Johnnie Vuich.

The funeral service was held on Saturday, July 10 in Fresno. Interment was at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno. Arrangements were handled by Stephens and Bean Chapel, 202 N. Tellman Ave., in Fresno.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

William ‘Bill’ P. Vasilovich

William “Bill” P. Vasilovich, 83, died on Thursday, July 1, 2004 in Fresno.

Mr. Vasilovich was born in Jackson on Jan. 14, 1921 to the late Peter J. and Maria Vasilovich.

Bill, as he was called, attended Jackson Grammar School and Jackson High School, graduating in 1939. He was an excellent sports athlete in baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, football and track. He was also a marvelous dancer.

He clerked in the Purity store in Jackson and the Safeway stores in both Jackson and Sutter Creek. Just prior to World War II, he was employed at the Winton Lumber Company at Martell.

In January 1942, he joined the U. S. Naval Reserve and served at the Naval Air Base in Alameda, Pearl Harbor, Oahu and Canton Island. He was discharged in 1946 as an Aviation Electrician, first class.

After the war, he attended Santa Rosa University where he excelled in basketball. He retired from the Pittsburg Plate & Glass Company in Fresno.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Seniors In Retirement (SIRs), All Slavonic-American Association, St. Peter’s Orthodox Church, St. Peter’s Men’s Club and the Masonic Fraternity of which he was a 50-year member.

He is survived by his wife of 50-plus years, Eva Vasilovich of Fresno; daughter, Steffie; son, Billy and his wife Trese; granddaughters, Angelica and Francesca; sisters, Sophie of Walnut Creek and Julie Vukalovich of Sacramento; brothers, Stan Vasilovich of El Cerrito and Evo Vasilovich of Jackson; sisters-in-law, Ellen, Violet, Mary, the late Stella; and brother-in-law, Duke Balich.

A private funeral service was conducted on Wednesday, July 7 in Fresno. Interment was at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno. Arrangements were handled by Stephens and Bean Chapel, 202 N. Tellman Ave., in Fresno.

Margaret Jane Loomis

Margaret Jane Loomis, 88, died on Saturday, July 10, 2004, in Sacramento. She was born Feb. 26, 1916 in Appleton, Wisc.

Graveside service will take place on Wednesday, July 14, at 10 a.m. in the Garden of Golden Memories at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell. Interment will follow. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Condolences may be offered to the family at daneri@cdepot.net.

John Lloyd Smith

John Lloyd Smith, 85, died on Monday, July 5, 2004, at his home in Sutter Creek.

Mr. Smith was born on June 25, 1919, in San Francisco.

At the family’s request there will be no service. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Egbert ‘Eddie’ Loren Simmons

Egbert “Eddie” Loren Simmons, 78, died on Monday, July 5, 2004, in Jackson.

Eddie was born on Jan. 16, 1926, in Harlingen, Texas. After graduating from high school, he moved to California and during World War II, he joined the Merchant Marines.

In 1946, returning from his military service, he worked the produce markets of south city and the famous Embarcadero Produce Market in San Francisco. In the early 1960s, he moved from Clayton to Jackson in Amador County and started 88 Disposal Service, a garbage business and carried federal contracts to maintain the camp sites in the high country at Silver, Caples, Kirkwood and Wood Lakes.

In 1964, he sold the disposal business and started Amador Produce with only six accounts. Ed built this up to a thriving business with over 120 accounts that covered five counties by the time he retired in 1985. Late in the 1990s, Ed returned to sell produce in front of his home on Highway 88 and could always be seen, sitting in his chair under the trees.

Ed was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and always supported youth sports in the county.

He was a resident of Amador County for 41 years and was known for his hard work, chain smoking cigars, great sense of humor and love for his family.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Bernice Simmons; step-son, Gary Walling of Jackson; daughter, Kathy Simmons of Ione; sons, Ron Simmons of West Point, Steve Simmons of Pioneer; four grandchildren, Sloan Simmons of Davis, Natalie Simmons of Roseville, Kerry Henson of Wellington, Fla., Kelsey Walling of Jackson; two great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Cheri Walling of Jackson, Susie Simmons of Pioneer as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Jack Simmons and two sisters, Jerry Robbins and Carrie Brechtel.

The family will hold a private memorial as Eddie requested in his final wishes. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.
