Sandra Ruth Hanna

Sandra Ruth Hanna of Gilroy died Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto, after a lengthy illness. She was 65.

Hanna had a long career as a teacher.

She was an avid outdoor enthusiast, climbing Half Dome in Yosemite and climbing Mt. Whitney.

She is survived by her mother and father, Mildred and Sandoe Hanna; brothers Bill and wife Alice, Roy and Terri, and Tom and wife Kathy; nieces Wendy and husband Jeff Wilson, Laurie and husband Michael Gallegos, Robin and husband Kevin Boden of Colorado, Ruth Hanna of Livermore, Calif., and Suzanne and husband Mohamed Ali of Riverside; nephews Bruce Hanna of Hollister and Zachery and wife Wynette of Juneau, Alaska. She also is survived by two grand-nieces and four grand-nephews.

Memorial Services take place at 2pm Saturday, Feb. 26, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Reception follows at the Hanna residence.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

R. Alden Banner

R. Alden Banner died Jan. 31, 2005.

He was a dentist for many years in Gilroy.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; children Cheri Sue of Gilroy, Gary of Gilroy, Jeff of Orange; grandchildren Richie, Amanda and Joey; sister Ida Mae of Rochester, Minn.; brothers Jack of Forks, Wash., and Max of Salinas.

Memorial service takes place at 11am Sunday, Feb. 20, at Seventh Day Adventist Church, Hollister. Private burial takes place at San Joaquin National Cemetery under the direction of Habing Family Funeral Home.

The family asks that any donations be made to Seventh Day Adventist Church School, 2020 Santa Ana Road, Hollister, CA 95023.

Michael D. Filice

Michael D. Filice, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at his home in Gilroy.

Michael was born in Cosenza, Italy, and moved to San Jose in 1920 at the age of 7. He graduated from San Jose High School in 1933. In 1953 he moved to Gilroy. Mike was a rancher in San Jose, Placerville and Gilroy. He was a member and past board member of the Prune Bargaining Association, Parks and Recreation Commissioner from 1977-1985, life-long member of Gilroy Golf Course, 40-year member of the Gilroy Elks, and he was active in local charitable organizations incl-uding the Gavilan District Special Olympics. Mike also was inducted into the Santa Clara County Senior Hall of Fame in 1986.

He was the loving father of Shirley Marcussen of Visalia, Alice Vierra and her husband Gil of Dinuba, Bob Dooley and his wife Joan of Benton, Ariz., and Carolyn De Francesco and her husband Mario of Firebaugh; grandfather of 17; great-grandfather of 30; great-great-grandfather of 20; brother of Joe Filice of Bakersfield, Louie Filice and Angie Behm. He also is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his first and second wife Mabel O. Filice and June Filice; parents Peter and Mary Filice; son Vernon Dooley; and brother Eugene Filice.

Funeral services take place at 10am on Monday, Feb. 7, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial follows at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family asks that any donations be made to a favorite charity.

Olive Hoplock

Olive Hoplock, a four-year resident of Morgan Hill, died Jan. 28, 2005.

Olive was a member of Shadow Mountain Baptist Church in Morgan Hill where she accepted Christ as her Saviour and was baptized in December 2000.

She is survived by her daughters Lori Lopez, Patty Kramer and Mary Wood; nieces Bobbie Reyes and Mary Alice Miller; nephews Lee and Gene Terry; grandchildren Tommy Kramer, Michelle Knowles, Nichelle Fincham, Angela and Richard Lopez, Tom and Faith Lapira, Matthew Wood; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were Feb. 2 at Johnson’s Funeral Home.

Grady Taylor

Grady Taylor of San Martin died Jan. 31, 2005, while at home with his family present.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife of 50 years, Lavada Taylor; son Paul and daughter-in-law Lynn Taylor of San Jose; grandchildren Justin and Jessica Taylor; brothers and sisters B.W. Taylor of Tulare, Leon Taylor of South Lake Tahoe, Pearl Worthington and Joyce Ellis of Visalia, Gerry Whitten of Tulare, Donna Skiles of San Mateo and Violet Litten of Valdez, Alaska.

Mr. Taylor was a U.S. Army corporal in the Korean War. He was a union journeyman painter for 32 years in Local 501. Grady was active in his church and held various positions throughout his life. He will be missed and will be in our hearts forever.

Services were Feb. 4 at Habing Family Funeral Home. Burial followed at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.

The family asks that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

LuVerne L. Andersen “Kalas” Spitzer

LuVerne L. Andersen “Kalas” Spitzer died Jan. 24, 2005.

Luverne was born in Velva, N.D., on Dec. 4, 1916. LuVerne moved to the Santa Clara Valley in 1948 and was a resident there for the remainder of her life. She was employed by Santa Clara Packing Co. as an assistant traffic manager. She will be sadly missed by her family, friends and neighbors at Pinetree Villas in Morgan Hill and her bridge group at San Jose Country Club.

LuVerne is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Gordon and Eleanor Westgaard of Brainerd, Minn.; loving and devoted son Gary Spitzer; grandsons Todd and Erik Spitzer; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements were under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

Esther McMurray

Esther McMurray, born April 8, 1911, in Sandpoint, Idaho, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005. She was 93.

Since moving to Gilroy from Seattle in 1978, Esther and her husband, Earl, were very active in New Hope Community Church (formerly First Assembly of God). She loved children and became director of the Children’s Church in the 1980s. She is dearly and fondly remembered as she was very close and special to her family.

Many years ago the Lord gave Esther, as a young mother, a promise from His Word, Isaiah 54:13 - “All your children shall be taught by the Lord and great shall be the peace of your children.”

Esther is survived by her sister Helen Sisley of Burien, Wash., children Rev. Donald Earl McMurray of Gilroy; Donna Joy Lee of Kent, Wash.; Patricia Faith McMurray of Seattle, Wash.; Esther Yvonne Haas of Gilroy; David Andrew McMurray of Issaquah, Wash.; Bonnie Jean Kuhn of Chelan, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Earl, died in 1994.

Viewing takes place at noon on Friday, Feb. 4, at Habing Family Funeral Home. Graveside services take place at 1pm on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park. Pastor Rev. Malcolm MacPhail will officiate.
