Sharon Lyn Rodgers (Moran)

Sharon Lyn Rodgers, 74, a former elementary teacher at Solvang Elementary, passed away peacefully March 27 at her home in Vancouver, Wash. Born in Laramie, Wyo., Rodgers taught children in Solvang for 27 years.

Rodgers attended Southern Oregon College in Ashland, Ore., and received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from that institution.

She was an excellent teacher and a natural educator. Her positive nature shined brightly in the classroom. Tough as she was, she never failed to let kids know that they could learn.

Letters discovered from former students attested to her measure and value as a teacher. One student said at her retirement that her “most valuable gift was not in the details of the lesson plan which I have long forgotten, but in seeding the imagination and the love for words and thoughts that I carry to this day.”

Survivors include three daughters, Jolyn Collie, Jonelle Hammers, and Joellen Holmes; two sons, Gar Rodgers and Kenneth Holmes; and a sister, Jonelle Maurer.

A memorial service was held at the Bethany Presbyterian Church on April 11 at 748 NW Fifth St., Grants Pass, Ore. 97526 with friends and family in attendance. The family has requested that remembrances be made as gifts to the Bethany Presbyterian Endowment Fund.

She is survived by her two sons Larry and Alan, their wives Patti and Laurie and three grandchildren, Lea Keyes, Erik Keyes and Mark Keyes. She will be interred in Oregon, no services are planned.
