Roberta Martha Geer

Roberta Martha Geer died December 21, 2007. She was born Jan. 26, 1919.

The family celebrated her life on Friday, January 11, 2008, at Ridgeview Commons in Pleasanton.

Barbara Joan Escover

Barbara Joan Escover passed away peacefully on Dec 28, 2007 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Barbara was born in Selma, California on April 28, 1932, to John and Louise Barthe

Barbara was married to Manual P. Escover in 1950. They had three Children Stan (Darlene Mcllean) Rick and Lori Erickson (Lorne)

Her joy of life was her husband Manual, her children and grandchildren. She loved to cook, enjoyed crafting and traveling. Mom loved great gatherings of friends and family, she enjoyed cooking for them and there was always a kind word for those in need. Barbara and Manual owned and operated Livermore Feed Store together for 20 years. Upon retirement, Barbara and Manual purchased a vacation home in Port Orford, Oregon where she enjoyed the ocean climate, many friends, visiting guests, and special friends Royce and Carolyn.

Their home was always open to their children’s friends whether it was for food, visiting or in need of a place to stay. Barbara will be remembered by all for her kind, caring and affectionate ways.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Manual Escover, sons Stan Escover (Darlene Mcellen), Rick Escover, both of Livermore, a daughter, Lori (Lorne) Erickson of Rimbey, Alberta, Canada, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, John and Louise Barthe and a brother, John Barthe.

The Family would like to thank the nursing staff at Valley Hospital in Livermore and Pleasanton for their dedication and providing comfort to Mom.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated January 4 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Livermore. Burial followed at Mass at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery, Livermore

Ronald Thomas MacConnell

Ronald Thomas MacConnell died December 28, 2007. He was 56.

Ron touched many lives with his adventurous spirit, loving heart and his wisdom. He loved the sea and all of its wonders and was an avid sailor. He also loved the game of golf and riding his Harley. Ron lived in California for most of his 56 years, he was born in Woodbury City, New Jersey November 16, 1951; the son of Robert and Beatrice MacConnell, both of Scottish descent.

As general manager of the Hilton Pleasanton at The Club in Pleasanton CA, he was afforded many successes and happy memories with his devoted staff of whom he was extremely proud. In the hotel and hospitality business for most of his adult life, Ron began his career after graduating from culinary school as a Certified Executive chef. He was a member of the American Culinary Federation a society aimed at providing mutual assistance and education. Ron was also on the Board of Directors, as a founding member, of the Orange-Empire Chefs Association in Southern California. When Ron cooked for you, it was one of his many ways of saying “I love you.”

He is survived by his wife, Lori MacConnell, his children Moria Lee, Sang Lee, Jene’ Shipman, Jeff Shipman and Aaron Unruh, siblings Bob MacConnell, Eddie MacConnell, Sean Wiggins and Matt Phillips, and grandchildren Lynsey, Phoenix and Colt; and son-in-law of Linda-Petteruti Wiggins, Gene Wiggins, and Marcelle Wiggins. Ron was incredible friend and confidant to a countless number of people, he will be missed terribly.

Friends and family took part in a “celebration of life” service for Ron at Hilton Pleasanton at The Club on Friday January 4 in Pleasanton.

Fred Baker

Fred Baker died December 28, 2007 in Pleasanton. He was 62.

Fred was born Oct. 6, 1945 in Glendale, CA. He attended Laney College and then served in the National Guard. He was a retired printer from the University of California. He is a member of Friend of Bill W. His hobbies include golf and family trips.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Ellen Baker, son Kenny (Krissy) Baker; daughter, Michelle Baker, and a sister, Donna Smith of Livermore, as well as numerous nieces and nephews: Mike, John, Bob, Eddie, Barney, LeAnn, Paul, Jolene and Patrice. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Barnhart and his parents, Don and Edith Baker.

A memorial service was held Jan. 4 in Pleasanton.

Rita Delores Goodwin

Rita Delores Goodwin passed away in Tulsa, OK on December 27, 2007. She was 86.

Rita was a longtime Livermore resident. She served as a Merchant Seaman Cook on a ship. She also worked in the Shipyards in Richmond, CA as a Rosie the Riveter. Her hobbies included sewing, crafting and gardening, especially her roses. She loved Hummingbirds and her Mynah bird.

Rita is survived by her children, sons, Lawrence Ewaldt of Afton, OK; Sam Strait of Joplin, MO; daughters, Jacqueline Malsom-Hyatt of Livingston, CA; Jo Ann Bennett of Washington; Lianne McKown of Flagstaff, AZ; Leslie Ann Wright of Modesto, CA; Jeri Lynn Simmons of Washington, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Goodwin and sons Michael Ewaldt in 1972 and James Ewaldt in 2006.

Graveside services were held Jan. 5 at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Livermore.

Stella Marie Martinez

Stella Marie Martinez, 40-year resident of Livermore, died Saturday, December 29, 2007. She was 66.

Stella was born January 30, 1941, in Salida, CO, and moved to California in 1962. She worked at Intel Corp. for 10 years and numerous retail shops until retirement. She was known to many as “Stella Bella.” She enjoyed making crafts, shopping, playing Bunco, watching sports and spending time with family and friends.

She lived life teaching those around her all the values that would later mold the lives she touched. Stella had a sweetness that will never be forgotten and she will live in our hearts forever.

Stella is survived by her husband of 45 years, Marshall J. Martinez Sr. of Livermore, her two sons, Marshall J. Martinez Jr. of Patterson and Vince Martinez of Livermore, daughter Angela (Doug) Hewey of Tracy and their two granddaughters, Ashleigh and Natalie. Stella was preceded in death by her brother Herman J. Ortiz and sister Dorothy Trujillo.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 458 Maple St., Livermore.

Stuart Smith

Stuart Smith, a popular swim coach for more than 20 years, died Dec. 28, unexpectedly at his Livermore home. He was 46.

Over the years, Stuart coached thousands of people both young and old, beginner and elite. He had a lasting influence on their lives. He was devoted husband and father.

Stuart was preceded in death by his mother Mary Jane Smith in 2004. He is survived by his wife Sheri Smith and son Hunter Smith, of Livermore, his father Larry Smith, of San Ramon, sister Valerie Smith of Norfolk, VA, sister Laurie Moyer and her husband Paul, of Spokane WA, niece Victoria Moyer and nephew Geoffrey Moyer, of Spokane WA, and numerous cousins.

A celebration of Stuart’s life was held Jan. 4 at Crosswinds Church in Dublin.

Don Charles Harris

At 81 years of age, Don died peacefully at home on December 20, 2007. He will be remembered forever as a kind and generous man with strong convictions and a keen wit.

Don was born February 6, 1926 and raised in Los Angeles (along with brother Ted) where he won many state and national tennis championships as a teenager and was an active member of the L.A. Tennis Club. Throughout the years he stayed in close contact and enjoyed his friendships with many of his original tennis buddies. During WWII Don joined the Air Force and was stationed in San Francisco. He was employed in the automobile business for his entire professional career; first with the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors and later with the Lucas Dealership Group in San Jose before settling into retirement.

An important attribute of Don’s life was his infectious love of music. Jazz was his musical passion. However, he did enjoy other styles as long as the music was “good.” He had extensive knowledge of the musicians as well as their music and loved to attend live concerts and the symphony. He was an accomplished piano player himself and at the age of 81 allowed himself to admit that progressive rock such as James Taylor and Paul Simon had merit.

Don was also an avid golfer and in 1975 joined the Round Hill Country Club where he enjoyed the friendship of many fellow golfers.

Don is survived by his wife, Paul Awtry Harris his three children, Kimberly Harris, Kathy Welk and Chuck Harris and his four grandchildren, Micah, Conner, Joshua and Christian. And of course, his beloved dog, Penny.

No formal service will be held. On his birthday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m. family and close friends will celebrate his life at Round Hill with warm stories, laughter and jazz.

Don would like to say “Thank you for a wonderful life.”

Idel Frizzell Wilcox

Idel Frizzell Wilcox died December 30, 2007 at Alhambra Convalescent Hospital in Martinez. She was 96.

Idel was born Jan. 2, 1911 in Maysville, OK. She trained Thoroughbred horses. She loved to read and spend time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph Martin Wilcox, a son, Grady T. Wilcox of Pleasanton, and daughters Mary Edwina Wiitala of Pleasanton and LaVeta Jo Fagundes of Livermore. She is also survived by siblings, Preston Warren Frizzell, Donald Edward Frizzell, and Ana Opal Bates; grandchildren Carol Ann LaDon, Nancy Heredia, Debbie Potts, Richard Theodore and Lisa Wilcox, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents Richard Warren Frizzell and Ora Mae Colley, as well as ten brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held January 7 in Pleasanton.

Nada Emma Waggoner

Nada Emma Waggoner passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on December 28, 2007 after a heroic battle with cancer. She was 85.

Nada was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 6, 1922 to Max and Barbara Slanovec immigrants of Slovenia. Nada was the oldest of four children. She has a brother Daniel Slanovec of Bayport New York, brother William Slanovec of San Jose California and sister Leona McCartney formerly of Hanford. She lived in Akron, Ohio until the age of 13 when she moved to New York City. There she graduated from Wadleigh High School in 1940 and then worked as a keypunch operator before joining the service.

Nada served as a Wave in the Navy during World War II. After the war she took advantage of the educational opportunities offered to veterans. After completing her schooling, she went to work for a model airplane magazine publisher in New York City until moving to California in 1955.

There she met her husband Miles Waggoner in 1956 on a blind date. They dated for six months before getting married on June 11, 1956. Miles and Nada lived in Cupertino, CA until 1959 when they moved to Livermore, where they have resided for the last 48 years. After raising her four daughters Nada went to work as a retail sales clerk for Mervyns Department Store in Dublin. She retired after 29 years of employment at the age of 82.

Nada is survived by her husband Miles and her four daughters Barby Waggoner of Stockton, CA, Donna Matthew of Tracy, CA and twin daughters Janine Pinks of Tracy, CA and Nanette Waggoner of Merced, CA; brothers Daniel Slanovec and William Slanovec; grandchildren Corinne Crosby, Nicole Hardgraves, Christopher Bryant, Anthony Hardgraves, Ariel Bryant, Molly Matthew, Lisa Pinks, great grandson Jordan Colbert, and many loving nieces. Her sister Leona McCartney and grandson Daniel Pinks preceded her in death.

Nada was a very energetic and outgoing woman. She enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, tending to her roses, and up until May of 2007 bowled regularly on the team leagues at Granada Bowl . She was a kind and loving wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. She will be dearly missed by all.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate her life on Sunday, January 13 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Livermore Pleasanton Elks Lodge, 940 Larkspur Drive in Livermore. It is located off of the First Street /Springtown Exit off of 580 near the golf course.
