Paula E. Low
Paula E. Low was born in
Richmond, KY on April 22, 1953
to Roland and Dovie Yost. She
Passed away at home in Livermore
on Oct. 27, 2008 after battling
breast cancer for a year. She
was surrounded by her family.
Because of her father’s career
in the military, Paula was well
traveled and lived in a variety of
places in her early adolescence,
eventually settling in Mount
Clemens, Michigan where she
attended middle school and high
school. Paula served as a
Radioman in the Navy and was
stationed on Oahu, Hawaii. Upon
being discharged from the Navy,
Paula came to California where
she eventually settled down in
Livermore. Paula was employed
at Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory in May 1977 where
she worked as a computer technician.
She continued to work
there until her diagnosis of cancer
in October 2007.
Paula was an excellent athlete
and competed in a number of
sports, including softball, rugby
and roller hockey. In the summer
she liked to jet ski on the Delta
and at Lake Comanche with her
family and snow ski in the winter.
She loved to dance and had a
passion for dachshunds.
Paula is leaving behind her
mother, Dovie, her husband of 24
years, Bruce, her daughters Kari
and Kelsey and her dachshunds,
Maxie, Cody and Penny.
Memorial services will be held
on Thursday, November 13,
11:00 a.m., at Callaghan Mortuary,
3833 East Ave., Livermore,
CA. (925) 447-2942. A “Gathering
of Friends and Family” will
commence at 10:00 a.m. prior to
the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family
requests that memorial contributions
be made to the American
Cancer Society, or to Hope Hospice,,
who did an exemplary job of providing
comfort and aid to Paula
and her family in her last days.

Eugene Clyde Barnett
Eugene Clyde Barnett died
Nov. 1, 2008. He was born in
Dibble, Oklahoma on Feb. 3,
1919. He was married to Jill for
67 years. They lived most of their
lives in the Bay Area and Lower
Lake, CA,
Dad served his country with
distinction during World War II
in the United States Army in the
Pacific Theater. He was a finish
carpenter for most of his professional
life, working for Design
Workshop in San Francisco. He
was a master at working with his
hands, but was just as comfortable
solving complex mechanical
problems. He was very active
in the Southern Baptist church,
where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Jill, daughters Genie
Finch (Gene Finch) of Pleasanton
and Betty Lopez (Art Lopez)
of Northridge, CA. He is also survived
by a sister, Hilda Cherry of
Benicia, one grandson, three
granddaughters, and four great
Funeral services were held
Nov. 5 in Pleasanton. Burial was
at Memory Gardens in Concord.

George William “Bill” Cushing
George William “Bill” Cushing,
Passed away peacefully
at home on November 1, 2008.
Bill was born and raised in San
Francisco, where he met his beloved
wife of 51 years, Barbara.
He graduated from Archbishop
Riordan High School and went
on to serve his country proudly
in the US Army. As a professional,
he retired in 1999 after spending
28 years with Bank of America.
He was a long time member of St.
Augustine’s Catholic Church,
and was a classic car buff, belonging
to the California
Chrysler Products Car Club. Bill
was affectionately known among
his friends and family as the guy
who could fix anything.
Bill is survived by his wife,
and children, Susan Pratt and
husband David of Antioch,
George Cushing, Jr., of Lathrop,
Sheryl Thompson and husband
Allan of Pleasanton, Gregory
Cushing and wife Thu of Palo
Alto; his brother Donald Cushing
and wife Dale of Walnut Grove,
and sister Maryann Schumacher
and husband Gary of Daly City.
He also left behind his grandchildren,
Alexa, Sophia, Bradley,
Joshua, Ronald, and Erika, and
many nieces, nephews, grandnieces
and grandnephews.
Visitiation will be held Sunday,
November 9, 12 pm - 2 pm
with a Vigil starting at 2 p.m. at
Graham-Hitch Mortuary, 4167
First St., Pleasanton. A Funeral
Mass will be celebrated at 11
a.m. on Mon., Nov. 10 at St.
Augustine’s Catholic Church,
3999 Bernal Ave., Pleasanton.
Burial will be at St. Augustine’s
Cemetery, Pleasanton.
In lieu of flowers, the family
is requesting donations be made
to the American Cancer Society,
7000 Village Parkway Ste E, Dublin,
CA 94568

Floyd Mathes
Floyd Mathes, a longtime Livermore
resident, passed away
peacefully, after a short illness,
on October 31, 2008. Floyd was
born on March 7, 1921 to David
and Wilhelmina Mathes in Pella,
Mathes served in World War
II as a Naval Aviator and attained
the rank of Lieutenant. He was
the Battalion Chief for the Arcade
Fire Department in Sacramento,
CA until his retirement.
Mr. Mathes is survived by his
wife Carrie, his nephew David
(Donna) VanArkel and many
other family and close friends
who were very dear to him.
There will be a private service,
at the family’s request.
In lieu of flowers, the family
respectfully requests memorial
donations in Mr. Mathes’s name,
be made to Hope Hospice 6500

JoAnn Thorstad
Livermore resident JoAnn E.
Thorstad passed away at Kaiser
Hospital, Walnut Creek, on
December 17, 2009 at the age
of 77.
JoAnn was born Feb. 27, 1932
in Fargo, North Dakota. She was
preceded in death by her beloved
husband, Ervin Thorstad, her
parents George and Lucy Walker,
brother Durwood Walker, sister
Beatrice Voelker, niece Joycelyn
Biernat and son Rusty Thorstad.
JoAnn was a homemaker
who moved with her family to
California in 1958. She attended
Cedar Grove Community Church
and served as a volunteer at Valley
Memorial Hospital and at the
Friendship Center at the original
pilot program at the Samuel
Bothwell Recreation Center.
She is survived by daughter
Mickee Thorstad of Milpitas, Liz
Cortez of Milpitas, son Nixon
Thorstad and his wife Patricia of
Livermore, and son Joel Thorstad
and his wife Carol of Silverdale,
WA. She is also survived by her
brother Eldon Walker of Ojai,
CA, cousin Marilyn Burnam of
Fair Oaks, CA, grand nieces and
nephews Terri , DJ, Tara, Tina,
and Josh Edwards of Aurora,
CO, cousins Nancy Guerrero and
husband Steve, Linda Hunt and
husband Ben of Sunset Beach,
OR, and Robert Noble of Fair
Oaks, CA.
She leaves behind a host of
relatives and friends to mourn
her passing.
Memorial will be held at Cedar
Grove Community Church
on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at
3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family
requests donations be made to
The Arthritis Foundation’s Hope
Through Heroes Memorial and
Tribute website.
