Nancy Herman
Nancy Herman died of cancer
April 18, 2009. She was 73.
Nancy was born in Chicago, Illinois.
She had an older sister,
Marjorie, who is deceased, and a
brother, Richard of  Texas.
Nancy graduated from Northern
Illinois University in DeKalb
with a teaching degree. She
taught two years in Palatine, Illinois
before adventuring across
country in the summer of 1960
to teach in Pleasanton. She
taught second grade at Alisal
School until her retirement.
After retiring, Nancy continued
to teach part-time in a reading
program at Montesorri
School in San Ramon. Later, she
tutored students in the Pleasanton
area.
Nancy liked to travel and did
so in her early years of teaching.
However, Nancy had a second
life. She loved dogs. She bred and
trained dogs; first Westies and
later Dandie Dinmonts. She made
many friends of like minded
people. She won numerous ribbons
at dog shows, including
Best of Breed at the Westminster
Dog Show in New York in the
1980s.
Over the years, Nancy rented
rooms in her home and in later
years became quite attached to
two dear friends who lived with
her: Roxanne Cecot and Nellie
Tota. They were like her daughters.
A celebration of life party was
given for Nancy prior to her
death.

Barbara Jane McWilliams
Barbara Jane (Metcalf) McWilliams, 91,
wife of former Pleasanton mayor, the
late John L. McWilliams, died peacefully
at Pleasanton Convalescent Hospital
on Sunday evening, May 3.
She had lived in Pleasanton
since 1943. Barbara, born June
27, 1917, was youngest of seven
children born to Alice (Taylor)
and Arthur Metcalf of Loman,
Minnesota.
Barbara’s ancestors came from
Hull, England and were one of
the first European families to
settle in northern Minnesota. She
grew up on the family farm next
to the Rainy River, which borders
Canada. The local Chippewa
tribe would often visit their farm
seeking food and medical help.
When Barbara was 16 she won a
Minnesota State Declamatory
Speech contest and was awarded
a trip to the World’s Fair in Chicago
in 1933. She was a top student
in high school and also
president of a local youth group
for the Lutheran League. She
turned down an offer from a family
friend for a college education
in order to stay and help her widowed
mother on their farm.
Barbara married John
(“Jack”) McWilliams in 1938 at
St. Thomas Catholic Church in
International Falls, Minnesota. In
1943 they moved to Kilkare
Woods in Sunol with their young
daughter Lynne. Soon after they
moved to an apartment in Pleasanton
above Edgren’s Auto Dealership,
which was located at the
southern end of Main Street. In
the late forties, the family moved
to a home on Rose Avenue where
they became more involved at St.
Augustine Catholic Church,
which was right across the street.
During that time, Barbara joined
the Catholic Daughters of the
Americas and remained a member
for over 50 years.
Barbara was a very dedicated
mother to their five children. She
was an excellent homemaker
with boundless energy who always
promoted a positive attitude.
She was cheerful, helpful
to others and always had a
twinkle in her eye. Barbara’s children
never heard their mother
speak ill of anyone, nor repeat a
secret told to her in confidence.
During the years Barbara’s
late husband John served two
terms on the Pleasanton City
Council (1958-1966; two as
Mayor), Barbara supported him
with style and grace. Her husband
predeceased her on their 42nd
wedding anniversary in 1980.
Barbara will be lovingly remembered
by her five children:
Lynne, Janis, John, Lee and Barbara
Ann; six grandchildren:
Christopher, Catherine, Jill, Erin,
Mallory and Megan; and one
great grandchild: Cooper.
Barbara’s eldest grandchild,
Tiffani, preceded her in death in
2002.
Public viewing will be from
5:00 - 6:00 P.M. on Friday, May
8, at Graham Hitch Mortuary; a
Vigil service and Rosary will follow
at 6:00 P.M. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at
3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 9, at
St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic
Church, 4001 Stoneridge Drive,
Pleasanton. Internment will be
private.
In lieu of flowers, donations
in Barbara’s memory may be sent
to: Alameda County Meals on
Wheels, 6955 Foothill Blvd,
Suite 300, Oakland, CA 94605
(www.feedingseniors.org), or to
the Catholic Daughters of the
Americas, c/o St. Raymond
Church, 11555 Shannon Avenue,
Dublin, CA 94568.

Marjorie Ruth Koller
Marjorie Ruth Koller died
May 4, 2009 in Dublin. She led a
truly fascinating life. Born in
Australia on April 3, 1917, she
served as a civilian employee of
the U. S. Army at American Headquarters
in Sydney during World
War II.
Marjorie immigrated to the
United States on a military hospital
ship after meeting and marrying
Carl Duke who was serving
in the Pacific in the U. S.
Merchant Marine. After the war,
she and Carl moved from his native
Bakersfield, California home
to northern California where they
both became involved in real estate
and home building. Both
became real estate brokers with
Marjorie reportedly becoming
one of the first female real estate
brokers in the state. Together,
they ran a small saw mill to produce
lumber to build individual
homes and later, sub divisions in
and around the greater Sacramento
area. It was at this time
she gave birth to her daughter
Carolyn. Marjorie was a proponent
of housing rights and was
responsible for many deserving
families’ ability to own their own
homes.
In 1958 Marjorie purchased a
horse ranch in the Tassajara Valley
then known as “Valley
Stream” and over the years developed
the Yarra Yarra Equestrian
Center, named in part for the
river flowing through the heart
of the Melbourne area. Marjorie
continued to work in the real estate
field while promoting equestrian
competitions at Yarra Yarra
representing numerous disciplines.
She was well known and
respected in the Arabian horse
community as well as the dressage
competitive community
working with the now United
States Equestrian Federation.
She championed and sponsored
many otherwise underprivileged
residents of the community,
offering employment and
shelter to those in need. Marjorie
enjoyed travelling the globe
when the opportunity presented
itself, oftentimes taking her
daughter Carolyn to such farflung
places as Egypt, India, Russia
and other exotic environs.
She was truly a citizen and a student
of the world, loving life and
all it offered.
She is survived by her daughter
Carolyn, who lives with her
husband and continues the horse
ranch tradition of a new Yarra
Yarra and a daughter Bonnie and
two grandsons David and Peter,
living in Australia.
Marjorie will be laid to rest at
Memory Gardens in Livermore
after a memorial service at St.
Clare’s Episcopal Church in
Pleasanton on Saturday, May 9,
2009 at 10:30 am. Donations
may be made in her name to
Hope Hospice, Dublin.
Arrangements by Graham-Hitch Mortuary.
