Bernice Nadine Kiely
Bernice Nadine Kiely was born in
Rawls, Texas on March 22, 1919 and
Passed away on Monday, September
8, 2008 in Livermore, she was 89
years old.
Bernice was the hard working wife
of a lifetime cattle rancher. She was
devoted to her family and their country
life.
She was preceded in death by her
husband John F. Kiely in 1992. She
is survived by her loving sons Dr.
Hugh Kiely and his wife Diane of
Oakdale, John Kiely of Livermore,
Dennis Kiely of Escalon, CA, 8 grandchildren,
8 great grandchildren and 4
nieces.
A Chapel Blessing Service will be
held on Friday, September 12, at 12:00
at Callaghan’s Chapel, 3833 East Ave.,
Livermore. Burial will follow at St.
Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Livermore.

Eleonora Joy Schlies
Eleonora Joy Schlies, 1915-2008,
was a forty year resident of Pleasanton.
Nora loved to read and would be
delighted if her memory were served
by others reading some of her favorite
books. "The Prophet" by Kahlil Gibran
and "Quo Vadis" (Nero's Rome) and
"With Fire and Sword" (17th century
Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth) by
Nobel Prize winner Henryk
Sienkiewicz were favorites. She
cooked wonderfully, particularly her
family's cherished Polish recipes. Nora
enjoyed listening to the opera, teaching,
storytelling and engaging in extended
conversation even in her final
days.
She was a loving wife and mother
who taught many students in her field
of biology. The example she set will
continue to influence those who knew
her.
She was preceded in death by her
husband Edward W. Schlies, M.D.,
daughter Tamara Ann, sister Gloria
Lane, brother Charles Kryski and
grandson Jacob Schlies. She is survived
by daughter Tanya Fremaux,
M.D., sons Allen Schlies, M.D., and
Christopher Schlies, sister Natalie
Malachowski, six grandchildren and
eight great grandchildren.
Nora's family will gather for a
viewing at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Graham
Hitch Mortuary, 4167 First St.,
Pleasanton. Her funeral mass will be
celebrated at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12 in the
chapel at St. Elizabeth Seton, 4001
Stoneridge Dr., Pleasanton.

Grace M. Beck
Grace Beck, 91, a native of
New York, died suddenly on November
24, 2008. She was born
July 14, 1917.
Grace resided in Pleasanton
for the past 22 years, and was a
volunteer at the Medical Library
at ValleyCare Medical Center.
She was a longtime member at
St. Philips in Dublin, where private
service were held. Grace is
survived by her loving family,
daughter, Carole of Mountain
View, and brother, Ceasar Bottari
of Ellenton, FL. She was preceded
in death by her husband
Arnold who passed away in 2005,
and her two sisters, Jeanne and
Botte.

Janet Marie Allison
Janet Marie Allison passed
away unexpectedly at her home
in Livermore on November 28,
2008. Janet was born in 1966 and
raised in Alameda County; she
graduated from Granada High
School in 1984. Janet had many
ways of relaxing, reading was one
of her favorites.
Janet was preceded in death
by her grandparents
Janet is survived by her mother
Mary Ann (stepfather John) Leal
of Livermore, her father; Robert
(stepmother Sharon) Allison of
Santa Rosa, her siblings Robert
M. (Jaylene) Allison of
Brentwood, Lisa (Ralph)
Jacobsen, Richard Leal of Grass
Valley, James Leal of Idaho and
Misty Allison. Janet is also survived
by many nieces and nephews,
all of whom were very dear
to her.
A Chapel Blessing service was
held December 4 in Livermore.

Raul Alvarez
The patriarch of the Alvarez
family, Chief Master Sergeant
Raul Alvarez, US Air Force Retired,
passed from this earth surrounded
by his wife, children and
grandchildren on November
29th 2008. He lived a long and
fulfilling life and will be remembered
by many. Raul was born
on Feb. 15th 1924 in Fresno, CA.
In 1942, after finishing school
at the Spanish American Institute,
he enlisted in the Army. He was
assigned to the 10th Air Base
Communications Detachment as
a cryptographic/message technician.
A veteran of WWII he first
served in India with communications
support for the combat
cargo task force. He was later stationed
at Chanyi Air Base, China
in Jan. 1945 as part of the 14th
Air Force, General Chennault’s
famous Flying Tigers. He returned
to the States in Jan 1946.
His distinguished military career
in the Air Force spanned 29 years
including support for the Korean
and Vietnam wars. He rose to the
rank of Chief Master Sergeant, a
rank reserved for only 1% of the
entire enlisted members in the Air
Force and the pinnacle of an enlisted
member’s career.
Raul served overseas in Germany,
Saudi Arabia, Newfoundland,
Morocco, Greenland, and
Okinawa, as well as numerous
stations here in the States, his final
station was Hickam AFB in
Hawaii. Raul earned two Air
Force Commendation Medals
and became one of the few enlisted
men to receive the Legion
of Merit, normally awarded to
high ranking officers.
After retiring from the military
in 1971 he began his 18-year career
with the US Postal Service
retiring in 1989. He spent 14
years as a mail carrier, walking
the route and getting to know the
people he delivered mail to.
Later, after hanging up his mail
pouch, his duties included training
new employees and assisting
in the daily operations at the Livermore
Post Office.
In 1950 Raul married the “girl
next door” Theresa M. Espinosa
in Los Angeles. He is survived
by his wife Terry and their five
children Paul, Jim, Steve, Maria
and Patrick; his brother Emilio;
daughters-in-law Karen, Pam,
Dawn, and Jennifer; son-in-law
Javier Carrasco; grandchildren
Kristina and spouse Steve,
Rachel, Alicia and spouse Adam,
Heather, Eddie, Sarah, Paul
Michael, Katherine, Danielle;
Antony, Gabriel and Ava; greatgrandchildren
Taylor, Alexandra
and Zechariah. He is loved dearly
and will be missed.
Mass of the Resurrection was
celebrated Dec. 10 at St.
Michael's Catholic Church in
Livermore. Burial with Full Military
Honors followed at St.
Michael's Catholic Cemetery,
Livermore.
Memorial donations can be
made to St. Jude’s Children’s
Hospital at www.StJude.org.
