Elsie Gladys Barnes, 88, died Aug. 22, 2002, at Seneca District Hospital in Chester. Elsie was born July 3, 1914 in Red Cloud, Neb., to William and Josephine Havel Kudrna. Elsie had resided in Truckee for 60 years prior to moving to Chester two years ago. She had been employed at the Tahoe Forest Hospital for 15 years in the housekeeping department. She was a member of the Truckee Seniors, the Truckee Seniors Cofy Club, and the Methodist Church of the Mountains. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and working in her garden. She is preceeded in death by her husband, Harry; and brothers Ralph and Robert Kudrna. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Greenwald of Oroville and Ginger Stratford of Chester; sister, Wilma Chaplin of Frederick, Wis.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life will be held at the graveside in the Truckee District cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002. Jereldean Wells Bishop, 85, died Aug. 21, 2002 at Sierra Valley District Hospital in Loyalton. Jereldean was born Jan. 25, 1917 in Owensborough, Ky. She moved to Palo Alto in 1971. Jeraldean enjoyed her daily walks and spending time with her friends. She is preceeded in death by her husband, John; and sister, Emma Boyd. She is survived by her sons, Al Bishop of Loyalton, and David English of Half Moon Bay. Following cremation in Quincy, per her request no services will take place. Dorothy May Blankley, 89, died Aug. 19, 2002, at Lassen Community Hospital Annex in Susanville. Dorothy was born Aug. 30, 1912 in San Bernadino to Edwin and Mattie Brown Warren. She moved to Susanville two years ago. Dorothy enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting. She also enjoyed many crafts. She is preceeded in death by her husband, James Hobbs Blankley; daughter, Barbara Newton; one sister and two brothers. She is survived by her daughters, Doris Jackson of Palm Desert, Marilyn Nighswonger of Janesville; brother, Roland Warren of Twenty Nine Palms; sister Lois Arvickson of Yucaipa; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Following cremation, a private family celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Inurnment will take place in Desert Lawn Memorial Park in Calimesa. Sandra Jean McKinnon Gray, 57, died on Aug. 20, 2002 at her home in Portola. Sandra was born Feb. 27, 1945 in Santa Ana. She attended Westwood High School and graduated from Interior Design School in Santa Ana. She was employed by the Santa Ana School District and moved to Portola in 1994. She enjoyed gardening, decorating and cooking. She is survived by her husband, John of Portola; father, R.H. McKinnon of Las Vegas, Nev.; mother, Laverne McKinnon of Portola; daughter, Raven Hohman of Colo.; sister, Jenny Stoik of N.J.; aunt, Polly Kilgour of Portola; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild. A memorial service is planned for the middle of September. Announcements will be mailed. Private inurnment will be in Whispering Pines cemetery in Portola.

Memorial services for Dr. Harry Oberhelman Hendrick, 80, of Reno, Nev., were held Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, in Reno, Nev. Born Dec. 6, 1921, Dr. Hendrick died suddenly at a friend's Bucks Lake home on Aug. 18, 2002. Dr. Hendrick, who was also an attorney, retired from his Reno medical practice in 1985 after 40 years as a physician. He then entered McGeorge Law School in Sacramento, graduating in 1989 at the age of 67. He practiced worker's compensation law for five years before retiring from law practice in 1994. In 1945 he graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School and began his practice in medicine in Norwood, Ohio as a general practitioner. Subsequently, he practiced medicine in Colo., Reno, Nev. and Sparks, Nev. He was the first chief of staff at Sparks Family Hospital where he had offices,; was an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Nevada Medical School from 1974-85; and also served as medical director at Physicians Hospital for extended Care in Reno, Nev. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea for two years. He was an avid skier, golfer, runner, snowmobiler and water skier. He owned a vacation home at Bucks Lake from 1987-95, where he participated in seasonal activities including water skiing and snowmobiling. He was an active member of the Bucks Lake Snowdrifters Club during that time. Dr. Hendrick is survived by his wife, Joan of Reno, Nev.; sister, Shirley Frondorf of Davis; sons, Richard of Corvallis, Ore., Clifford of Denver, Colo., Tom of Grand Junction, Colo.; and daughter, Carolyn Ershler of Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the University of Nevada Marching Band, c/o University of Nevada, Reno, Foundation, Morrill Hall, University of Nevada, Reno.

Merrillyn Roberta Roberts, 53, died Aug. 17, 2002 at Redding Medical Center in Redding. Merrillyn was born Dec. 2, 1948 in Pittsburg. She had been a resident of Westwood for 17 years. Prior to moving to Westwood, she had lived in Phoenix, Ariz. Merrillyn was an accomplished artist. She enjoyed crafts, woodwork and gardening. She was a longtime member of the Westwood Assembly of God Church community. Merrillyn is survived by her husband, Galen of Westwood; children, Elissa Bowling of Phoenix, Ariz., Lisa Somervill of Redding, Traci Kreuziger of Phoenix, Ariz. and April Somervill of Flagstaff, Ariz.; sisters, Jacki Sprigg of Westwood, Gerri Day of Anchorage, Alaska and Denise Lofgrin of Sterling, Alaska; along with three grandchildren. A celebration of Merrillyn's life was held on Aug. 22, 2002, at the Westwood cemetery in Westwood. Dennis Dwaine Lindell, 42, died Sept. 6, 2002 at his home in Crescent Mills. Dennis was born on July 18, 1960 in Lynch, Neb. He had been a resident of Plumas County for the past six years, moving from Daly City. Dennis had been employed as a maintenance worker for the Plumas County Building and Grounds Department for the past three years. He was an accomplished taxidermist, and enjoyed hunting and fishing. Dennis is survived by his wife, Robbin; son, Kalvin; and daughter, Lindy, all of Reno, Nev.; along with five brothers and one sister. Helen Rose Bond Peavy, 88, of Clarkdale, Ariz. died Aug. 20, 2002. Helen was born Aug. 19, 1914 in Hanford. She owned and operated the "Pennisula Market" grocery store and the contract post office within the store in Lake Almanor for many years. Helen enjoyed gardening, traveling and cooking. Helen is survived by her husband, Elgie Lee Peavy; daughter, Betsy Williams; son, Jerry Radvich; stepson, David Peavy; and sister, Royal Jackson. There will be a celebration of life for Helen at Wildwood Assisted Living Center in Chester on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Wanda June Smith, 74, of Yuba City, died on Aug. 24, 2002 at Seneca Hospital in Chester. Wanda was born on Dec. 12, 1927 in Earlsboro, Okla. She had been a resident of Yuba City for many years. Wanda was preceeded in death by her husband, Julian Smith; and brothers, Kenneth, Bob, Jimmy and Ronnie Bryant. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Nahhas of Chester; son, Craig Smith of Yuba City; brothers, Joe Bryant and Buddy Bryant, both of Texas; sister, Madge Hughes of Yuba City; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held on Aug. 28, 2002 at the Sutter Cemetery. Donations made in her memory should be made to Seneca Long Term Activity Fund, P.O. Box 737, Chester, CA 96020.

Geraldine Randles, 75, died Aug. 21, 2002 at Eastern Plumas District Hospital in Portola. Geraldine was born Aug. 1, 1927 in Roaring Springs, Texas. Geraldine moved to Portola in 2001.
She was a waitress and preschool teacher, and the mother of 15 children. Geraldine was preceeded in death by her husband, Harvey Randles; and three sons, Richard, Steven and Dennis. She is survived by her children, Bonnie Gaile, Hollis, Kenneth, Curtis, John, Deborah Asorsan, Donald, James, Jaz, Cynthia Gaile, Randy and Thomas; 25 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Portola Station Baptist Church.

Arlys Louise Hemping, 78, of Portola, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at Eastern Plumas District Hospital. She was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Hubbard, Iowa. After graduating from Hubbard High School in 1941, she worked in a local newspaper. During World War II, she drove truck for her father, hauling grain and livestock to local markets. She married Harry Hemping on Nov. 17, 1945. They moved to Richfield, Calif., in 1955. In 1956 they moved to Graeagle, and then in 1980 they moved to Portola. Arlys was active in the Portola Station Baptist Church. She sang in the choir, was editor for the monthly and annual newsletters, and printed the weekly bulletins. She is preceded in death by her parents, Eduard and Dorthea Sievert, and brothers Raymond and Lloyd Sievert. Survivors include her husband, Harry, of 57 years; son, Vance Hemping; daughter, Vicki Hudak; sister, Ester Baluanz, and seven grandchildren. Memorial services will be held today, Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at Portola Station Baptist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Portola Station Baptist Church, c/o Child and Youth Camp Scholarships, 171 S. Gulling St., Portola, CA 96122.

Gwen Edgecomb, 95, died on Aug. 19, 2002 in Redding. She was an elementary schoolteacher and a Campfire leader in Susanville. Gwen was instrumental in helping to build the Campfire Girls cabin just before World War II. She was preceded in death by her husband Homer Edgecomb. She is survived by her son Jerry, daughter-in-law Mary and two grandchildren, Erica and Nathan who all live in Eugene, Ore.

Gertrude "Trudie" Frailey, 78, died on Aug. 26, 2002, at her home outside of Greenville. "Trudie" was born on June 24, 1924 in San Francisco. She had been a resident of Greenville for the past 20 years. She enjoyed floral arranging, crocheting and many other crafts. She had been active with scout troops in both Livermore and Greenville. "Trudie" was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Frailey; and sons, Ronald Dunning, David Fisher and Melvin Frailey. She is survived by her children, Dale Fischer of Greenville, Phillis Pinkston of Martinez and Luellen Diaz of Antioch; her brother, Gunther Fischer of Sacramento; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Following cremation, private family services will be held. Private scattering will take place on the family property outside of Greenville.
