Orlando Anthony Ruffalo

Weed resident, Orlando Anthony Ruffalo, 87, passed away Sept. 28, 2003 at his residence, of natural causes.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6 at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park. Father Philip Wells of Holy Family Catholic Church will officiate.

Orlando was born May 9, 1916 in Kenosha, Wis. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1947 from the Bay Area.

Orlando was the owner of Angel Valley Market in Weed. He was a U.S. Navy veteran from World War II and was a member of the Holy Family Catholic church in Weed.

Survivors include his wife, Eda Ruffalo of Weed; a brother, Louis Ruffalo of Homer Glen, Ill.; sisters, Adeline Bernardi and Dolores Aldridge of Kenosha, Wis., Filomina Cosentino of Oswegi, Ill. and Angela Lovingood of San Antonio, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Orlando was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Ruffalo.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ora Jean Seaver

Ora Jean Seaver, passed away in Yreka on Oct. 5, 2003.

Ora and her twin brother, Oran, were born in Webb, Ariz. on Oct. 16, 1921. Coming from a large Mormon family, her parents, Rufus A. Jean and Ella Lovinnie Webb, had 13 children.

Ora eloped with Charles W. Seaver to Agua Prieta, Mexico an Dec. 5, 1936. They moved to Scott Valley in 1944 where they farmed for over 50 years.

Ora rode motorcycles, was a private pilot, drove windrower, chauffeured kids, and served as one of the first EMT's on the Etna Ambulance. She loved nursing from childhood and achieved her goal to be a nurse at age 43, working at the hospital and Beverly Manor in Yreka for years.

She was a great musician and was conductor in the Mormon church for almost 30 years. Always with a song in her heart and a sweet smile, she will be sorely missed by family and friends.

In addition to Charles, her beloved husband of over 66 years; survivors include children and their spouses, William Victor and Carol of Etna, Carol Diane and Bill Henry of Everett, Wash., Terry R. and Annelee Seaver of Pleasanton, Christine Elaine and Terry Kramer of Waldport, Ore. and Crynthia Jean and Nelson Palmer of Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Etna, with interment following.

James Alexander Smith

Weed resident James Alexander Smith, 97, passed away Oct. 18, 2003 at Madrone Hospice House in Yreka, of natural causes.

Services will be at 1 p.m. on Oct. 23 at Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel. Chaplin Karyl White of Madrone Hospice House will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park.

James was born Aug. 29, 1906 in Bath, Maine. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1933 and worked for International Paper in Weed.

James served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

Survivors include his son, Ellsworth Smith of Stuart, Fla.; sisters, Edith Bell and Ethel McCroskey, both of Portland, Ore.; a niece, Gloria Smith of Yreka; and four granddaughters.

Memorial contributions may be made to Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA. 96097.

Mt. Shasta Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Julia Ann Linderman

Etna resident, Julia Ann Linderman, 88, passed away at her home on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003.

Julia was born May 24, 1915 at Forks of the Salmon, to Christy and Jessie Stanshaw. She enjoyed working at Etna High School having been employed there for many years.

Julia loved fishing, traveling and playing the slot machines in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include daughter Nancy Jo Duran of McKinleyville; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Charles Berg of Yreka; sons and daughters in-law, Neal and Lauren Purcell of Simi Valley, Wayne and Karol Purcell of Etna, David and Linda Floyd of Tucson, Ariz.; son Gary Floyd of Palmer Lake, Colo.; two step-sons and their spouses, Jerry and Kathy Durett of Etna and Don and Virginia Durett; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Dec. 19 at Girdner Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow at the Etna Cemetery. A gathering for friends and family will be held at the Etna Masonic Hall directly following the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Scott Valley Scholarship and Educational Awards, Inc., P.O. Box 352, Etna, CA. 96027.

June Viola Lisle

Montague resident, June Viola Lisle, 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 5, 2004, with her family and minister, Rueben Rog by her side.

June was born in Fresno on June 22, 1917, to Jim and Maude Kepley. She was one of 10 children. She moved to Siskiyou County in 1996 from Fresno where she had spent most of her life.

June was truly a loving person with a big heart. She was an exceptional mother, not only to her own children but to numerous foster children and other children in the community.

June was a fabulous cook. She could feed her very large family on very little. She was best known for her chili and chicken noodle soup.

She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include children, Marlene Parker of Montague, Darrell VanWormer and Doreen VanWormer-Bolen, both of Fresno; children and their spouses, Leonard and Martha VanWormer of Lake View, Ore., Wess and Carol Albrecht of Oakdale, Pamela and Richard Pease of Montague, Tom and Carol Mason of Fresno, John and Teresa Lisle of Montague and Alice and Ken Finfrock of Fresno; brothers, Clyde, Frank and Jimmy Kepley, all of Fresno; sister Ida Belle Dollar of Fresno; 25 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

June was preceded in death by four husbands, her first husband, Leonard VanWomer, Sr., second husband, Wesley Albrecht, third husband, Tom Mason and lastly Fred Lisle in 1979. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Charlie, Kenney, Teddy, Raymond and Clayton Kepley.

A visitation for friends and family will be from noon to 4 p.m. on June 8 at Girdner Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on June 9 at Evergreen Cemetery.

Jackson Orrell Murphy Sr.

Longtime Siskiyou County resident, Jackson Orrell Murphy Sr., passed away Friday, June 4, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Redding.

Jackson was born in Magnolia, Ark. on Sept. 29, 1930, to Arthur and Irma Murphy. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 3 years during the Korean Conflict.

Jackson worked close to 30 years for the California Highway Patrol, retiring in 1981. He was past president of the Montague Rotary Club and a member of the Copco Lake Sportsman's Association. He was very community oriented and was actively involved with the Juvenile Justice Commission in Yreka.

Jackson was an avid hunter. He loved spending time with his family and friends hunting in the local outdoors. He was a good man and was always there for anyone who needed him. Jackson was a friend to all and loved by many.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Helen Murphy of Lake Shastina; sons and daughters in-law, Jackson Jr. and Cathy Murphy of Montague, Michael David and Karen Murphy of Lake Shastina; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and David Bosch of West Rutland, Vermont; brothers, Robert Murphy of Magnolia and Arthur Murphy of Texarkana, Texas; sister, Irma Lou Ramey of Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; two great -grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 8 at Girdner Funeral Chapel. Private interment will be in Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, Ore.

Myrtle Ione Pickrell

Myrtle Ione Pickrell died June 2, 2004.

Myrtle was born Oct. 24, 1911 near Aromas, in Monterey County, to the John Wesley Winter and Ida Eloise Merkel Winter. She attended elementary school in Aromas and graduated from Watsonville High School.

Myrtle trained as a nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco. In 1931 she married Henry Pickrell. He died in 1985.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Rev. Thomas Cook Jr. of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, John and Wilma of Concord; a son, James of Redding; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild

Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; her parents; and her only sister, Hazel Ardine Peary.

Myrtle enjoyed gardening, sewing, hunting, fishing, traveling, cooking, camping, entertaining and playing the piano.

She was an active member of Redding Christian Fellowship. For many years she served as a Sunday school teacher, a church officer and was a church choir member. She also helped support a number of Christian missionaries and projects. She was chairperson for the weekly River Oaks Chapel Service program during her five years of residence there.

Myrtle was also a member of hope Rebecca Lodge of Yreka. She was a 4-H leader as well as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader.

During World War II when Mr. Pickrell was overseas in the Navy she sewed signal flags and army tents and also sold Avon products.

Myrtle always had a smile and a helping hand for anyone who needed it. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on June 15 at Redding Christian Fellowship, 2157 Victor Ave. in Redding.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Redding Christian Fellowship building fund or to a charity of one's choice. The family will receive visitors following the service at the church. Dr. Ernest F. Chastain

Gazelle native Dr. Ernest F. Chastain passed away June 28, 2004 in Walnut Creek.

Ernest was born Nov. 19, 1907 in Gazelle. He grew up on a cattle ranch. Ernest attended Washington State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

He married Gazelle school teacher, Lucile Morse, who passed away in 1993 after 62 years of marriage. Ernest practiced veterinary medicine in Grants Pass, Ore. until entering the U.S. Army in 1941, serving until 1946.

A veteran of World War II, during his last two years of service, Ernest was a liaison officer with the Chinese Nationalist Army based at Kunming at the China end of the Burma Road. For his service to Chiang Kai-Shek's Army, he was presented with the Special Breast Order of the Cloud and Banner, the second highest citation in the Chinese Army.

For his service in the U.S. Army, Ernest was awarded the Bronze Star medal.

For 33 years, he was chief of the Bureau of Animal Health, State Department of Agriculture, where he played a key role in the eradication of several serious animal diseases.

Survivors include his daughter Lucie of Benicia; and granddaughter Emily Thompson of Portland, Ore.

Arrangements were under the direction of Mount Vernon Mortuary in Fair Oaks.
